Came here with my bridesmaids just for a dinner and drinks and the service was terrible. The husband and wife are rude, judgemental and shouldn't be working in hospitality with the attitude they have. Wouldn't recommend.

The food at this restaurant is worth the drive through to Walkern to either dine in or get a take away. We like to go and collect our food and enjoy a drink while we wait. The atmosphere in the pub is warm and welcoming. The food is the best Chinese for miles. It is beautifully cooked using quality ingredients. The staff are very kind when we have our grandchildren with us giving them bowls of prawn crackers, lollipops and fortune cookies while we wait. They all work so hard and keep smiling even when they are very busy. We love it.

A Hertfordshire village pub probably not the place you’d expect to find a hybrid between a ‘local’ boozer and a quality Chinese restaurant but that is what the Yew Tree is. I admit to a degree of bias as this has been my local for more than decade (barring a hiatus when in New York) - the pub has traditional decor and A standard two McMullen Ales with a rotating guest. The opening hours have been curtailed by the government’s criminal lockdown policies but it also has top notch Chinese food, whether for takeaway or of an excellent level for a sit down meal. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. The landlord and landlady are both extremely friendly and happy to offer advice on the menu. A great place.

We are very lucky to have this excellent Chinese restaurant in the village. We have used it for take away and sit down. The brewery some time ago tried to shut it and it was only because the village collectively campagned to keep it open was it saved. Very well worth a visit

As others have said, this is a Chinese restaurant in a typical village pub. And it really is - the locals were having their Friday night pint behind us while we ate crispy chilli beef sat under the dartboard! But it works. Staff friendly, service and food promptly delivered. Food all of a good standard (prawn toasts were particularly generous). Will definitely return again.

We love going to the Yew Tree with our grandchildren. For them it is a real treat to look at the menu before we leave and write down everyone’s choices. They love to sit in the bar and have a drink while our takeaway is being prepared. The staff always make a fuss of them with plates of prawn crackers and a fortune cookie when we leave. The food is really delicious with generous good value portions. The atmosphere is always so warm and friendly we love it.

We called in for a takeaway whilst visiting the village. Although the place is signposted as a pub and Chinese restaurant, I was still surprised when I walked in to see a the room set out as a typical English pub but decorated as a Chinese restaurant. We bought a round of drinks and ordered our takeaway from an interesting and varied menu. By the time we’d finished our drinks our order arrived. The food was tasty, plentiful and good value and would definitely recommend. I can’t comment on the table service but the bar staff were friendly and welcoming.

Marcus the manager was pretty rude to a female customer who was dining last night. Me and some mates could hear him losing it over an order. The lady was clearly upset afterwards when she was talking to Amy. Stop being so disrespectful to your customers Marcus, particularly the ladies! Amy and your staff can be nice so why can’t you? Myself and many others have seen you do this before. Enough now mate!

Chinese food in a typical English country pub. This is a first for me so I thinks it's rare but what a great idea. The people who run this place are certainly from a Chinese background. The food was superb and as expected. The service was adequate. However, this pub can still be used for just drinks, peanuts, crisps and playing darts too. Yes, I'll definitely return again for sure. Very pleased indeed. SteveBalstone

Very slow service by 2 seemingly inexperienced barmaid. All the orders for both eat in and takeaway were taken by one other lady which is part of the reason it was slow. Food was very hot but stodgy. When clearing the table one of the girls spilt food all over me, I was only given some serviettes and a very mumbled apology. Will not be going back or be recommending it!

We went in for quick lunch. There was hoovering going on and lights were dim- but belied the service and food to follow. Starters were hot, tasty and we really liked the sauce on our ribs. The crispy duck was plentiful and the mains were tasty and hot. Coffee and chocolates were included. The three of us were well pleased with our impromptu Chinese meal. The dim lights were going to be fixed as soon as the electrician came!

Thought I would try this as a take away as it is near my home and reviews were pretty good. Very disappointed. Below average and not worth the money. Ordered king prawns in light batter ... this batter could have sunk the titanic, horrible, tasteless, peeled off batter and fed prawns to my cats, who will eat anything. Rest of order was average. Sorry to write such a negative review but its not worth the visit.

Going for dinner in a village pub in Hertfordshire, you wouldn't necessarily expect the menu to comprise Chinese food but that's the case in the Yew Tree.We went along last Monday evening, when the pub was fairly quiet (one other couple eating and four or five people at the bar, and enjoyed a lovely Chinese meal. The pub is on the pretty narrow main street through the village but parking is not a problem, as they have a large car-park round the back of the pub. Alternatively a taxi to/from Stevenage is approx. £10 each way.Our party of 6 people chose the set meal for 4 persons + at £20.50 per head, which turned out to be a real feast. A big tray of starters including spare ribs, spring rolls, won tons, prawn toast, etc, was followed by a shredded duck with hoisin sauce, spring onions/cucumber and pancakes. This was followed by the main course, though I can't remember our choices but suffice to say there was enough food to sate all our appetites, with plenty left over at the end to make us feel guilty. Everyone in our party were happy with the meal, finding it well cooked and delicious as well as plentiful. The bar offers a good selection of beers and spirits, and we added a bottle of red wine, which was slightly expensive at £17.50. With the set price meal (at £20.50) plus drinks and tip, the occasion cost £30 per person, which I didn't find unreasonable for what we had received.

Dishes were worse than poor. Nothing was fresh and there were no vegetables to be seen. Sauces tasted old. Rice was grey and stale. The music was excruciating and we couldn't wait to leave. We went with the family (9 of us). Very unsual to find a Chinese restaurant in a very small village. From the decor you would expect a traditional pub with traditional English pub food. We really enjoyed our time there, the service was very friendly (you can tell it is family run), the food is delicious and VERY generous (good job we all have a good appetite!). What a treat it was, as living in the French countryside, Chinese restaurants are few and far between. We will defenitely come back.

Having been visiting the Yew Tree to eat regularly for the past 6 months or so, I am happy to say that the food and service experienced so far has always been first class, food always fresh, hot and plentiful, service cheerful and with a smile!Costs seem reasonable averaging around £20.00 a head before drinks, and we have never left feeling hungry! Drinks are at "standard pub prices" so no shock there! (the beer on hand pumps always seems well cared for and the house wines seem reasonable as well). If we had to criticise as with other reviews the decor could do with an update and the windows seem to suffer from real draughts so go prepared with layers to add or remove depending on where you sit! Overall I am very happy to recommend both the food and drink provided at the Yew Tree

Visited over the weekend, the pub was empty except for a number of visitors who had ordered a take away, which is always a good sign.there was not a great atmosphere here but bearing in mind the Champions league final was on it was not a bug surprise (so good food, in a pub, whilst watching the football, not too bad at all). The meal was very nice and the waitress stopped us from ordering too much, which is very refreshing. The service was attentive and the meal came at reasonable intervals. The bill was just over £70 but almost £30 of that was drinks so it was not too expensive either, especially considering the quality and presentation of the food.So to summarise, good quality and tasty food, nice size portions, in a pub, good service and the football on TV, not a bad evening, thanks.

Was looking for a local restaurant to take my dad for his 86 birthday. Living local to walkern this was perfect. We booked a table and arrived about 30 mins early. No problem, drinks ordered and bought to our table. The food order was taken by a very cheerful member of staff. The food took about 15 mins to arrive. Starters were nice and hot and plenty of them, actually more than we ordered. Main course was just as good, plenty of it and hot as well. Good presentation great service and nice atmosphere.Need to make this a regular place to eat.

The Yew Tree is one of 2 pubs still open in Walkern, the other being the White Lion. The Yew Tree's USP is that it serves Chinese Food. Living in the village it is very convenient. The pub is very traditional, iffy carpets and dark furniture in abundance. The food though is fine, standard Hong Kong Chinese fair. The salt and pepper prawns and deep fried beef in chilli are pretty good though. The staff are nice and remember everyone's names. I only wish they could modernise the decor and also introduce some South East Asian food for variety.

Regarding to your comment we try to do our best in every ways to accommodate our customers. When Ms Becca G visited my restaurant it was BT who had failed to provide the service that occurred to the card machine, BT failed to repair my phone line and BT did not complete the job until a full week after 23/05/2013, as Ms Becca G stated the amount she had spend could not be more than 50 pounds unless she had added a bottle of wine on top of the meal, sound like Ms Becca G is doing something to slate the restaurant.

From the outside, this looks like your usual British pub. The inside looks like your usual British pub... With a hint of the Orient. The service was quick, but they neglected to tell us that their card machine wasn't working until after our meal, which meant driving back to Stevenage to get cash. The food was okay. Really nice dim sum but that was the best part of the meal. The rest was average. The fact it came to almost £50 for two was also a bit of a shock, bearing in mind we shared a starter, had one main dish each, and two mineral waters. I hadn't been to The Yew Tree before. I'm not so sure I'd go back either.

I felt compelled to share my experience at The Orange Tree. The decor is light and calming in this charming, country house, feel restaurant. The staff are attentive and friendly. The food is simply outstanding. This is the best meal I've eaten in a long time. Everything was cooked to perfection. The portion sizes are generous especially with the starters, which was good to see given the price. I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough and I'm very much looking forward to my next experience here.

Picked Rosey Lea because it has kerb appeal and there was a pretty terrace to enjoy the last of the summer. Had a simple lunch of baked potato and a glass of wine which came to £17.45. The spud was OK and came with a decent amount of salad. However, for that money I want a big, fluffy and really hot potato where the cheese is happily melting in to the mix. The one I had was warmish and smallish. Service was friendly but on the slow side.

This little Gem is one I can’t do justice to in a review… the food, service and atmosphere is off the scale and has raised the bar for me as far as pubs go… I was raised in a pub so my standards are high and it’s been my go to for the past 5 years. There is nothing that comes close to this little country boozer … consistently fabulous… never a disappointment and their staff are outstanding. I sadly refuse to go anywhere else now… HIGHLY RECOMMEND ❤️❤️
