Excellent afternoon spent with friends. Food was great.

We had Sunday lunch here last week and I have to say it was my favourite ever Sunday Roast...and at 59-years-old I've had a few! I would go for the roast pork but my wife lamb was also really nice! Service was brilliant as well!

Another amazing get together at the Coach and Horses. Sam was welcoming as always and the food atmosphere and service are second to none. Can’t wait to come again

Booked a doggy dining table and unfortunately we were sat in the conservatory type area which was quite cold. Despite there being free tables in the main pub, with other dogs also there. Felt like we should have walked in rather than booked! The menu had lots of options and we went for the small plates to start. The pork croquettes were super tasty as were the prawns, the bread was really lovely too. Quite good value as well. The dusted calamari was dreadful, huge rings of calamari that were overcooked and rubbery, we couldn’t eat them. Far better products out there Mcmullens- pineapple cut squid for example. I had the chicken burger for main, the chicken itself was decent but the bacon and cheese was cold, very strange. The coleslaw in the burger had seen better days, I’m guessing it didn’t have long left on its shelf life. My partner had the shepherds pie, this was hot and really tasty- served with some fresh tenderstem broccoli. Service was okay but a bit unenthusiastic apart from one lady (tattoos and white t shirt), she fussed the dog and was very attentive after taking over from our original server. Wouldn’t rush back for food but pints tasted like the lines were nice and clean.

We celebrated a 90th birthday here for lunch a couple of weeks ago and the service was fantastic. The food was all good too, a nice selection of vegetarian food as well as meat and fish dishes.

We celebrated my husband’s birthday on Friday evening. We had a wonderful time, the staff were amazing so friendly and professional. I ordered in advance as we were a large group and everything was ready and correct. The food was beautiful and they were kind enough to assemble our cakes and candles and carry it in. We had such a wonderful time and wouldn’t hesitate to have another special event there again. Thank you to all the team for making our evening so lovely.

Our group always meets at the Coach & Horses. The menu is interesting and varied, the food, top notch. Service is timely and the prices reasonable. It has a lovely vibe. Highly recommended!

Lovely meal , good atmosphere, can't go wrong

We came for a late lunch with my grandparents today. Our server Karin was fantastic - she was very attentive, friendly and patient. All the staff went above and beyond to make things easier for my grandparents who have limited mobility. The food was fantastic and served in generous portions. Great selection of cocktails too! We would definitely return.

We used to visit here regularly but the food and service had deteriorated over time and we hadn’t been in years. We were invited along for a family members birthday and unfortunately did not have a good experience (again). My steak was so burnt, I mentioned it to the waiter whose response was “it’s chargrilled and supposed to be like that”. It was burnt! There’s a difference. He offered to switch it over but said it would likely be the same. My children’s two burgers were also burnt. We took the burnt steak and burger home for the dog . Others on my table were also really disappointed with their food. Food portions were small and there was no salad with children’s or adults burgers and fries. It was also so overpriced for the quality of the food. It’s a shame because it’s a nice location. Won’t be going back again

Rather expensive for a pub lunch but food is OK. Friendly service, but a little slow. Clean toilets and plenty of parking.

Great pub on outskirts of Bishops Stortford. Super friendly staff, great food and a lovely open fire!

Really disappointed ! We have eaten here on a few occasions now and meet family coming from all directions so it’s about a 45 min journey for us all. For the first time we were really disappointed. Two had the haddock which came without caper sauce and 3 roast beef’s were almost cold. At £300 for 7 people having two courses and one round of drinks todays visit was massively over priced for the quality of food. We were not the only ones either.

2.5 ,,,really sorry bit place is looking tired and dirty carpets are taking a beating Toilets were never cleaned in my opinion,,food was poor compared to previous visits had a ribeye very chewy and fatty to chew ,,should melt if ribeye ,my dinning guest next to me had pork belly again really poor and chewy,,hopefully can improve as nice setting,,staff were 5* so helpful and happy to adjust to our requirements,,very busy on the day perhaps to much for kitchen to get covers out at a quality plate,

I booked the side room for a private 40th birthday gathering. The service was great. The side room was perfect for around 20 people and it back out onto the garden for the kids to run around. The food was yummy and high quality party buffet food. Thanks for everything

A nice looking pub with friendly service and a pleasant interior. The beer selection on tap was OK. The food was a bit bland and didn't look as good as the photos on these other Google reviews. The Shepherd's pie didn't taste the best. Would have expected better quality. A bit disappointed.

We came here for lunch as a family with 2 kids. We ordered all food with some cocktails and bottle of wine. We ordered a margarita which came served on the rocks when the menu does not state this. We then ordered a bottle of wine that came to the table open, the waitress did not asked if If we wanted to taste the wine, she purely left the bottle at the table and left. After tasting the wine we didn't enjoy and asked to swap for a more expensive wine, we were told we would have to pay for a small glass which was what we tasted, bear in mind no one cared if the wine was good or spoiled. We ordered the second bottle of wine (£36) which once again came open and it was a cork, not screw bottle, and once again it was left on the table with a "good luck" sign and server yourself. After lunch we asked the waitress why are we being charged for a glass and why are the bottles not open at the table, we were told, "if you order wine we expect you to know the wine" and "we just open all the screews at the bar, not at the table" It would be better to change the name from Coach and Horses, to Wether spoons, and adapt prices, because in all honesty, spoons you'll get a better experience overall. We paid £75 per person and this is not a normal pub as some might argue, with this type of price you have to give a different type of experience to your guests, and it is extremely disappointing to have this type of service where you couldn't care any less about your guests. Cherry on top of the cake, we ordered some coffees, which came freezing cold, we then sent back and finally had some type of discount. We ended up paying for everything and obviously never will we return here, awful service, awful care for customers and no pride in any kind of service.

Came as a party of 15 after a last minute booking cancellation. Sam and alex led us through the booking process and were incredibly patient with organising dietary requirements. On the night service was friendly, quick and the food was amazing.

Good local with decent food. Beer is expensive compared to other pubs

Two Christmas events here. One I arranged for work colleagues 10th December. And another with hubby and eldest son. Sam and staff make you feel very welcome. Atmosphere is so lovely and calm. Food was good, and amazingly catered for an awkward me, who has to have gluten free. I, for once didn't have to choose a different menu as most of the menu included GF on the same festive menu. Thank you so much. There is only one tiny suggestion, and not worth taking any stars away. Please just make sure you provide spoons soup/dessert to the table settings.

Beautiful old pub that nicely decorated, food was great.

Their idea of a 'fun Friends quizz' had questions so hard, so obscure, that I doubt the shows writers would have known the answers.

Food good but £23 for 2 glasses if wine is above London prices

We are group of 10 with kids and a few of different allergies. The service is very good and patient with us. Sunday roast is great and the dessert is interesting present. Highly recommend for gatherings. Sit very comfortably and food is great!

As usual good food in a friendly environment

We were lucky enough to have our wedding reception at the Coach and Horses. We wanted something fairly 'low key' whilst still giving our guests a memorable time. The team were really lovely and the food was beautiful! All the guests were very complimentary about the food and we were given takeaway boxes for any leftovers. Would definitely recommend!

Food was great. Massive portion. Yes! Service amazing. One thing I wanted to mention is that they serve custard with the sticky toffee pudding (you need to request it). Usually at pubs they serve it with ice cream, which is an utter abomination🤮 Well done for offering the yellow creamy delight🙏🏻

Have been once in the Summer and once in the winter when we ate. The food here varies as it seems to regularly change menu and chef. It has been4* at times but at the time of writing this review it wasn't great at all. As for the summer experience it can wor well not just as a place to eat but as a pub. The garden and one of the larger seating areas used to be was delightfully decorated and planted - however I haven't seen that recently. Service at time of review is good and unobtrusive.

Lovely helpful staff. Food let them down. I had fish & chips. The fish was more batter than fish and gave me indigestion. The peas were undercooked. The chips were not to my liking either, the wong side of too chunky.

Lovely pub but the food wasn’t great this time. Starters were overdone and not much flavour. Wagyu burger was very dry. Others in our group said fish and chips was ok.

Just average, another pub with cheap non premium beers charged at inflated premium prices. No Stella, Peroni, Fosters etc or any standard lager you'd expect. Food prices are also high... wouldn't recommend.. ***updated based on feedback of owner Peroni is available but only by the bottle. This proves my point, you'll pay premium for the bottle Food - owner mentioned, high price due to quality of ingredients. I believe these ingredients are still basic and probably frozen... My review still stands...

Have been to the coach and horses on many occasions and have usually been reasonably satisfied. However I visited last week with friends for an early evening meal and was very disappointed . We started with prawn cocktails which were very basic with small prawns, cold and slightly stale bread and rock hard butter. Very underwhelming for nearly £10 each. Our main courses (chicken burgers and fish and chips)were ok but nothing special. Our bill came to £95 including 1 round of drinks (2 beers and soft drink) which seemed quite expensive for the quality of food. Hopefully things will improve in the near future as it’s a lovely pub and beer garden.

Fab time here on a bank holiday afternoon with family out in the sun on their outdoor garden space. Food is tasty, drinks on point. Cant wait to go back!

No one came over to take our food order for 1 hour. We had to go up to the bar and then they came over to take our order. Got our food and they didn’t come over for another hour to take the plates and then told us the kitchen was shut so we couldn’t get dessert.

My mother went for lunch today with 3 friends who she had recommended the pub 3 People ordered the same dish again recommended by my mother , when asked if the meal was okay 3 people said the dish was very bland , with no real flavour the young man said its a different chef and I will pass your comments on, no real apology or any effort to make up for a very dissapointing meal Which left my mother who had recommended The pub very embarrassed so much so the she paid for all the drinks, this was meant to be a 88 birthday treat, which is very dissaponting, my mother never complains if 3 people say the same thing perhaps more notice should be taken, my mother lives with me now and seemed very down when she came home , saying the meal was really dissapointing, to be fair we have always had a good experience in the coach and horses but not today,

Really disappointed with the lack of choice on the menu today. We’ve stopped off at the Coach and Horses previously, on the way to Stansted, and always had fantastic food. Another flight this evening, so booked a table for a Sunday roast, looking forward to the extensive Sunday menu as advertised online. We were greeted by very polite staff, and shown to our table - only to be shown a menu that was a quarter of what was advertised. Roast; no cauliflower cheese, parsnips etc available - very limited mains. If we were made aware; we would have cancelled and gone elsewhere. Finished our drinks, and paid our bill before ending up in a local Thai. Lovely staff, setting - shame about the lack of transparency regarding the menu.

Have spent a wonderful family day here they let us us park our motorhome overnight in the carpark had a fabulous roast dinner with the biggest Yorkshire puds I've ever seen ,the staff were first class at all times one to revisit I think

Staff were friendly, unfortunately the food was average at best. I went for the Sea Bass that was on the specials menu. It arrived swimming in oil and quite powerful flavours that completely overpowered the subtle taste of the fish. Portion size was also really small so I had to eat again when I got back. Possibly I was just unlucky with my choice of dish.

Lovely welcome, sat in greenhousey section which was pleasant. Went for the roasts off the Sunday menu. Starters looked pretty but prawns were tasteless, bread & rock hard butter accompanying. Roasts ordered were pork, gammon & veggie roast. Again looked great but all tasteless, spuds hard greasy, nothing seasoned, measly amount of shredded veg and bland gravy. Lovely pub just needs a better chef! Wouldn’t bother with it

I found the food was ok and expensive for what you got.

Be aware if you have food allergies , we visited last weekend for a relatives birthday, we were in a private room. We made the staff aware by email and phone that one of the party has a severe nut allergy. On arrival the waitress was very helpful and went through the menu and changed some of the dishes that he had ordered. When the food arrived lasagne with a side salad covered in pine nuts!!! Total lack of communication between staff and kitchen be AWARE !

We used to love this pub, and we decided to go back yesterday, as we had visitors from abroad. The food we ordered was still very decent, but the service has hugely declined. It was a busy day, and we knew we had 2 hours available, however: the staff who served us was new and kept forgetting what we had asked her. That did not bother us, but because she was slow and forgetful, she took longer to serve us, and then they wanted to literally boot us out. It is not the way to treat customers. Better organisation is needed. I was hugely disappointed and embarrassed for our guest. I preferred the previous owners

I came here with my 2 children and dog. Staff are very welcoming, attentive and helpful. Food was surprisingly good for a pub chain. Good beer and the barman even warmed my brandy glass. The dog had a bowl of water and a few treats too!

Asked the waiter about the crab salad and said was all white meat and laid out nice It was tiny and had a tiny bit of brown meat hidden in the rocket salad. Was awful !!

The food that we did eventually get was average to say the least, the service was terrible, atmosphere bad due to dogs being allowed in the same area as non-dog lover customers eating. 5 adults eating only 3 out of the 5 got their food because it was either cooked wrong twice(steak asked for medium and came back so rare it was still kicking) or never arrived all together! Waited for 30 min until i was told they had forgot to place my order through and by then everyone else had finished their meals, told them not to bother! Hostess had the audacity to say he would take the food that we never even had or was cooked wrong twice of the bill!!!! Offered us a free dessert, declined because by then we did not trust them to get this correct to be honest.

Lovely old, atmospherics decor, comfortable and lovely meals at reasonable prices, well worth booking for a special occasion too we had a great time here with our family birthday celebration for my daughter in law recently, staff were accommodating to customers needs, and friendly,

£12 for 3 small frozen scallops is a complete rip off, the fish for main course was nice. The dessert was completely different from what was ordered and what should have been an expresso was a white instant/filter coffee. Used to be a very nice place, but won't be rushing back after this experience.

Went to the coach and horses at lunchtime today. Had the seared scallops starter. It was pathetic. Two limp scallops, heaps of jalapenos and capers. And a scrap of "croutons". The Tiramisu was worse. A small shell of fake chocolate. A small glass of coffee with two sponges biscuits and ice cream and cream. Never again! And with a diet coke over £23

We went for Sunday roast! Absolutely brilliant, we had beef,which was very rare! I loved it, but if you don't like rare, choose another meat! Service and food all excellent 👌 👍

I was looking forward to this but was sadly disappointed. The tables were close together and there was so much noise - a screaming child and a dog with a sudden shrill bark did nothing to help. There were four of us. The meals were not served all at the same time so that was irritating and spoilt the experience. One of our party did not have the asparagus that should have been part of her meal so she had to search for a waiter to put this right. The plates were tepid so the meals were not hot enough. When the bill came, I thought it was overpriced. The so called mimi dessert with a few ragged pieces of waffle was very poor value.

We visited this place for the first time with family and we had an excellent Sunday roast and dessert 🍨 Plentiful portions , piping hot 😊. Great service from entering and throughout our meal . Can’t wait to visit you again next time we are over . 👍

Staff friendly food was great, and the atmosphere was very oldy worldly. Would recommend coming back. They also hold theme nights and quizzes.

Visited on a Sunday afternoon, The host who was seating customers etc was amazing, really lovely polite gentlemen (didn’t get his name (unfortunately)who showed us to the bar to get our drinks as the table wasn’t ready. Ordered our mains, and came swiftly, all of our parties meat was delicious, however it felt like we had the scraps of the vegetables, you could tell the roast potatoes had been sat under a heat lamp for a long time, and the Yorkshire pudding just disintegrated into crumbs. The cauliflower cheese was minimal, around 6 florets with a dribble of cheese over them. We finished our meal, and waited a long period of time for our plates to be cleared, staff were walking past us, and the rest were congregated near the bar area. We finally attracted the attention of a server who cleared our plates. We then were told someone will be back to take our desert and further drinks orders. After a further wait, The host had noticed we had been basically left and came over to us and took our order for us, he was absolutely lovely. Deserts arrived and was clear that 2 deserts out of 3 had been sat on the pass as the ice cream had melted and it was more like a soup rather than a sticky toffee and a berry pie. I feel the staff don’t want to take drinks to tables or clear plates away, as we sat and watched our second round of drinks sat on the drinks pass for about 15 minutes. Overall, a poor experience, such a shame as it’s a cosy venue, a few tweaks here and there and it will be spot on. Left feeling like we’d just been forgotten and our custom wasn’t appreciated and no Customers should leave feeling that way.

3 friends booked an early evening (6.15) midweek table. Service was initially attentive, food and drinks arrived within 20 minutes. Service seemed to stop at that point. No one came to ask if we wanted more drinks throughout our visit. We eventually managed to catch someone to order deserts and coffee. After 35 minutes, nothing and no one came. I went to the bar and asked for the bill, explaining that we couldn’t wait any longer. The waitress admitted she’d forgotten to send the order to the kitchen. No attempt to rectify the situation. With so many other places to eat around Bishops Stortford, we won’t struggle to find somewhere that values our custom.

You always get a warm welcome here and service is good. The menu has a good variety of family favourites and some chef's specials. On the edge of town with plenty of parking makes this a popular location.

Service was very poor had to ask after waiting ages for desert menu and bill we could see staff at the bar talking also desert dish was so hot almost burnt my fingers no warning

The title says it all. Went New Year's Eve. Everything we ordered was good quality fare and served by very pleasant staff. For me though I expected a bit more atmosphere especially as it was NYE.

A lovely Sunday lunch for a large family group with varying needs - all met with care and consideration. Our waiter, Dan was particularly good - very pleasant and attentive - but all the staff are great. Thank you.

Had a couple of things on the menu not available but it really didn't make much difference as there were plenty of other options to choose from. The portions were large, not ridiculously so, but when placed in front of you it does cross your mind that you won't be able to eat it all. All 5 of us did! In our group we had a mix of vegetarian, pescatarian and carnivore and we had no trouble finding something to order. Food was fresh, hot and delicious. We meet regularly and it's the first time in a long while that we all decided to squeeze in a pudding. Someone may even have squeezed in two after we decided to buy one for a memer of our usual group that couldn't make it this time. All round fabulous.
