My Daughter & I enjoyed nicely cooked, well presented and very flavoursome meals. This restaurant is under rated. I will certainly return. All of the staff were kind, friendly and very attentive more so the lovely restaurant Manageress, despite a well known mature football Manager on the next table.

Hicimos una reserva para el almuerzo, al llegar, el personal no pareció entenderlo, y nos acompañó antes de pedirnos que nos sentáramos en el área del vestíbulo junto al bar (el restaurante parecía vacío y cerrado). La comida y el servicio fueron muy amables, mis albóndigas estaban frías por dentro y no estaban bien cocinadas, la camarera parecía confundida cuando pedí parmesano, pero ¿no debería haber sido ofrecido sin que yo lo pida? El atún de mi esposa estaba seco y demasiado cocido, la ensalada era buena pero muy básica, con solo tomates, lechuga y cebolla (demasiadas cebollas). . . algo que podrían tirar juntos en casa por 30 p. Nuestra otra amiga pidió langostinos con su ensalada, que no llegó hasta que ella casi había terminado la ensalada, y nuestras papas fritas salieron 20 minutos antes que los platos principales, por lo que estaban completamente frías. Esto realmente fue un desastre, y bastante vergonzoso para mí, ya que estaba sacando a dos personas para tratarlos.

We ate at The Yard while staying at the hotel this April. THe Yard used to be a true hotspot for fine dining in Sheffield, since changing their menu however they now offer what can only be described as over-priced pub food. My fish and chips were burnt on one end with soggy batter on the other, the fish itself was grey and mushy (for £16 i was expecting white, flaky cod). My partner's steak was completely overcooked (the waitress didn't actually ask how he wanted it cooked, he had to prompt her after she had finished taking the order). Both came with over-style chips and were completely tasteless. Really shoddy, poor quality food, such a shame as this used to be a great place to eat!

Fuimos después de haber estado en el spa buscando algo rápido antes de ir a casa. Nos sentamos y la gente que nos servía era muy educada y fácil de acercarse. El menú era rápido y fácil de elegir. Tenía el pastel de Yorkshire, era increíble. Definitivamente lo recomendaría. Volveremos lo disfrutamos mucho.

As it got dark and began to rain and the candles were lit at the tables the Yard must have looked very inviting from outside. Unfortunately, the foyer - side location makes it chilly. As part of the Mercure hotel it benefits from their customer service quality. Although there was a bit of confusion apparent at times. Food was good, menu limited and like the drinks it's hotel prices for food.

Staying at the Hotel & decided to eat there. Just booked it expecting the quality of the food to match the standard of the hotel (which was fab!). However, the menu I would describe as "pub food". I honestly thought it would be a la Carte or of that standard. Shame really as the staff (esp the manager was fantastic). The food was average and whilst it didnt spoil our stay it certainly contributed nothing.

Took my wife for her birthday. Wished I'd looked at previous reviews first. When we arrived, first impressions were we were the only two in a 60 seater restaurant. Food arrived in 5 mins. Fish looked liked it was out of a packet. Chips were undercooked. Steak was fatty. Staff were far too attentive. Won't be returning.

The Mercure is a lovely hotel; we live in Sheffield and I often recommend it as a place for friends to stay. We also like to pop in for a cocktail every now and again. But we’d never been for a meal, and won’t be returning again. After being seated in a nearly empty restaurant on a Friday night (that should have been a clue!) we waited 10 minutes before someone came to take our drinks order. We ordered drinks and food at the same time as we were hungry.......after 30 minutes we gave up. We’d got our drinks but 30 minutes later we’d not seen a member of staff again - you’d think with only a handful of other customers they could manage to get bread and olives (our starter) out reasonably quickly. The staff seemed to either be completely absent or standing together chatting. We left. We didn’t finish our drinks (we didn’t pay for them either). We went to another local restaurant where the staff were friendly and efficient and we had our drinks and starter within 10 minutes despite it being very busy. Mercure need to sort themselves out - for such a good hotel in the centre of Sheffield the restaurant is one of the worst I’ve been in - no wonder it was empty on a Friday night.

Five of us old school friends met here for only our third reunion in 45 years . The bar and waiting staff, I need to say from the outset were very friendly and well meaning if not very knowledgeable.However the meal we had was very poor. The restaurant (named the Yard for no apparent reason) was almost empty so no excuses for the rather long waits we had for each course. The fish cake starter was quite good but the half a dozen calamari were coated in very thick batter.Having just returned from Spain, it was impossible not to compare them with the real thing. They were served in a little cutesy metal basket. Why oh why do we have to put up with this style over substance approach in this country?! The mains were the real let down. Three of us ordered Tiger prawn linguine which I could have made better myself. Too much oil, too much chilli,slimy bland prawns and a meagre portion. We asked for bread and got four flabby slices of Asda White tiger loaf! Really! nor even decent bread?! The worst was the Butterfly chicken, brought out as a starter in error and returned as a main reheated and dry with cold hard oven chips. Awful! Sadly there are too many places like this in the UK where the staff have barely an amateur grasp of what constitutes a tasty plate of food. Send your chef on a training course please! Special mention must go to Owen however who made every effort to give us a good experience.Thanks Owen.

Just had a lovely meal at the restaurant , a lovely gentleman called Owen served us and attended to all our needs , very informative and friendly , I had meat pie with Sheffield’s Henderson relish , chips and minted mushy peas absolutely beautiful , followed by hot chocolate brownie and ice cream , will certainly be returning , beautiful and clean surroundings too ! Thank you Owen and complements to the chef xxx

Me and my friends went for lunch as part of our spa day. I ordered a ‘Halloumi and roasted peppers V char-grilled halloumi, Mediterranean vegetables, hummus and rocket’ I received a wrap that had peppers and a few crumbs of feta. I asked the waitress where the halloumi was and she took it back into the kitchen, then brought it back out claiming that the crumbs of feta were in fact the ‘char grilled halloumi’ and left. My friends had all ordered different sandwiches some with mozzarella and all just had the feta in. The lady came over to ask how our food was and we said again how we weren’t very happy that we had the wrong sandwiches and she asked whether we would like to speak with the chef, we said yes. She disappeared off and then came back to tell us he was unfortunately ‘in a meeting’ and couldn’t come out to speak with us. No discount or alternative meal or even apologies were offered. Afterwards the lady next to us was informed by a waitress that they had run out of halloumi. I think it’s absolutely appalling to lie to a paying customer about the ingredients of their meal especially in light of all the new allergen legislation. How dangerous and rediculous!

We ate here because we bought a package at Mercure Hotel (promoted as it was a snooker weekend). There were few other guests eating there. Friendly service from young Spanish waitress. My pate, risotto and chocolate çake tasted ok but we're unremarkable.

Returned to the Mercure for another Spa Treat and dined at the Restaurant again could not fault the quality of the food or the staff working here

Lacklustre service that unacceptably slow when only 8 diners present. I was entertaining my daughter and her boyfriend. My fish pie went back (cold). My daughters nasi goreng warm in parts. Creme brulee not prepared properly. Stale bread with the olive oil. Just not acceptable in an allegedly 4 star hotel. Most disappointing when entertaining. My ire had to be saved for the following morning when I checked out. If I had been dining alone I would have walked out.

Had a really good meal here last week. Cannot fault the presentation or the quality of the food. However, the service leaves a lot to be desired. The head waiter was really pleasant but just had no concept of customer service. We were kept waiting and our desserts were completely forgotten altogether! And this was when there was the grand total of 11 covers. Sadly I would not like to be they were busier.

Reservamos una mesa aquí como nos alojábamos en el hotel para la noche. Distribución de la mesa era un poco simple, pero está bien. Nos dieron un menú con los precios. Cuando lo comentamos nos dijeron que era un fin de menú. 2 campos de 17 libras. 95 si mal no recuerdo y 3 cursos de 23 libras. Pedimos un menú a la carta que había si había. El camarero dijo que presuponer que quiere seleccionar desde el menú. No es la actitud que cabe esperar de un hotel de 4*. Nos debería haber sido dado tanto a la llegada. Él no era grosero, muy educado. Mi copa de vino estaba sucio pero cambiaron eso. Hicimos la reserva desde el menú y era muy agradable. Tamaño de la porción es decente, bueno y una buena relación calidad-precio. El desayuno también era muy sabrosa.

Very affordable good menu and delicious food! The breakfast menu was also very good. The staff were all helpful and keen to ensure that everything was perfect.

Nos alojamos en el hotel el 23 de diciembre Gran comida, bebida y servicio. Estaba un poco preocupado porque el paquete incluía algunos tentempiés en el bar Champagne y no había nada sin gluten aunque nos había informado en el momento de efectuar la reserva....

Disfrutamos de comer en este restaurante como parte de nuestro paquete Spa todo el personal es muy educado y nada es demasiado problema para ellos, la comida era de primera clase.

Nos alojamos en un fin de semana entre amigas, gran hotel, la comida y el restaurante. No me puedo quejar, y el personal es un crédito al hotel desde la llegada hasta la cena que no podía hacer lo suficiente para nosotros.

Well laid out and comfortable dining areas, with efficient and pleasant Staff for whom nothing seems too much trouble. The food was attractively served and tasted delicious.

We had burgers and lamb. The burgers were dry and the buns were dry. At £14 a burger, they were a complete rip off- a McDonalds burger at a 10th the price would have been far better. The lamb dish cost £22- again way overpriced for a very mediocre dish. At these prices you expect something special- that's not what we got. I'm really very cross and we certainly won't be going again.

We were so disapointed with our visit to the restaurant on xmas day.The place irtself is souless and service was rubbish.We were left stood at the entrance while a member of staff went to get a manager we felt like two spare parts.we had a drink in the bar and the live music was nice but we went through to our table quickly because i was cold in the bar,When we were taken through i was disapointed again when i realised my view throughout the meal was the kitchen doors and the outside kitchen serving area where i presume they serve breakfast.Ive had more intimate settings in an airport!!!!!!!!There was must have been 7 or 8 empty tables that would have given us a view of the Winter Gardens.We had to wait 10 mins to have our starter plate cleared even though there was endless staff they were anything but attentive.Wwhen the main course arrived the plate was not even warm and the food was only just warm.We then had to wait for the vegetables to arrive.At no point were we asked if we were happy with the meal and no sauces were offered.3 times we had to shout staff over to order drinks and by the time that the desert arrived which was unremarkable we couldnt wait to go home and get warm.Ihad far higher expectations when we had booked and paid £160 four weeks ahead not to mention all the contracts you have to sign before hand which seemed ridiculous at the time and now even more so.I can honestly say i have had better service and nicer hot food served to me in BHS cafe.Please dont waste your money dining here the kindest thing i can say is its absolutely garbage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My husband and I went a few weeks ago. The service was excellent and the food was lovely . Set menu -3 courses for £20.We were served by a guy can't remember his name but he was excellent and very friendly. He was telling us he was going back to Bombay for a visit as his father was ill.10 out of 10 for customer service !!!

Small portions for a large price, food was delicious though, but could have had more choice on the menu.

We enjoyed meals here during a short stay at the Mercure Hotel. The location of the restaurant overlooking the Winter Gardens is unique. Of course particularly attractive over the Christmas period. We had fish and chunky chips which was very attractively served and beautifully cooked. We also tried the roast chicken and the Beef burger and trimmings.

We ate here during our stay at the hotel. given the open-ness of the restaurant there was a lot of noise from the joining restaurant, but it was a Friday night in December so no real complaint.There was not as much choice on the menu as we anticipated, which was a little disappointing. Our order was taken for food, waitress had to be prompted for a wine menu, perhaps she thought we would be happy with the glass of water we had been given.Starters came and went, very enjoyable, then came the main course and things went wrong from there. My wife got her fish main course, I had ordered the Lamb Duo, however it was the Grilled Lamb steak that arrived, not what I ordered. The waiter did not seem sure that there was a mistake, but went back to the kitchen and on his return agreed that a mistake had been made and offered to change the meal, given that my wife had already got her meal, I opted to keep the wrong meal.Puddings were ordered, fruit crumble and custard, they arrived in small cast iron pots which were very hot, however my starter was hot in some places, warm in others and cold in others, which for such a small dish was quite amazing, obviously these were pre prepared and either kept chilled or frozen then heated to order, very poor deserts for the price. When discussing this with the waiter a 2nd man arrived, obviously in charge, offered us a free cheese board and a port, my wife also had a free coffee. He also waived the cost of the desert.This level of customer service was excellent,, however I would have preferred to pay for the entire meal and not to have had problems. This is the restaurant of a 4* hotel after all. All in all it did sort of spoil an enjoyable stay at this hotel

This restaurant is in the mercure hotel looking out onto the art museum. The meal itself was very nice and extremely well presented. There was a wedding at the hotel so the atmosphere was very bouyant. A little music would not go amiss in both the restaurant and champagne bar areas. The price was about right for this type of dining. Thanks for a very nice evening.

Invited to dinner here by friends who were staying at the hotel and have to say we were very disappointed. We arrived at 9.30 on Saturday night to find a large and quite attractive dining room but with only one couple dining who soon left, leaving us alone. Felt a bit rushed by the waiter keen for us to order as chef was finishing at 10.15. We were presented with some pieces of bread that were certainly not cut recently, while we checked the menu. Last week I ate in one of my favourite restaurants in London and prices here were similar, unfortunately the food was not ! My ham hock terrine was Ok I suppose but not very exciting, main course of belly pork disappointingly arrived with no crackling, though the meat was tender. Veg and potatoes are not included and have to be bought as extras. If invited here again will suggest an alternative !

The Yard restaurant at Sheffield's Mercure St Paul's Hotel is something of a hidden gem. There's a comfortable champagne bar (with good cocktail menu) where you can order a wide range of bar meals and sumptuous Sandwiches, and there's the main restaurant, offering a large menu of modern European flavours and select world wines to match.We found the service excellent; friendly, helpful and accommodating. Even accompanying nibbles such as a selection of olives and roast almonds were generous in portion.The cooking was absolutely excellent and it was also not a problem to make the odd substitution on the plate. Presentation was good, the taste and quality of produce better still - for very reasonable prices too, given the generous servings.

We went to celebrate our wedding anniversary with family. 3 of us had steaks-sirloin and fillet. All were dreadfully tough. We did tell the waitress who said she would pass the message on. Another guest had the frittata which tasted completely unseasoned and tasteless. All in all a very disappointing night for what was supposed to be a special occasion. Would have been better going to our usual across the square at Piccolino's for half the price where we know we would have had a delicious, tasty meal.
