Never had a bad experience yet when visiting the Sportsmsn

The pub is lovely and warm and some off the staff were really nice. However we ordered our meals first the starters ….. I ordered salt and pepper chicken bites. They were nice but they were not salt and pepper bites they had chilli’s and spring onions on top of them. Our mains I had the hot and spicy chicken burger and my wife had surf and turf. The chicken burger was a normal chicken burger no taste to it and definitely not hot and spicy and the southern fried gravy did not come with it …. When I asked it came and it was horrible. My wife’s steak , she asked for medium steak it can medium well done and was really thin, and no prawns on her plate. We asked about the missing items and the girl who brought our meals said she would query our meals!!! As if you don’t know how your meals are supposed to be served !!! The prawns come and they were terrible. No one came to ask us how our meals were. We won’t be returning here for an over priced frozen microwave deep fried meal !!!

Even though my dad initially didn't want to celebrate his birthday, we decided to make a last-minute booking at The Sportsman at Crosspool in Sheffield. It proved to be an excellent choice for a mid-week meal as we enjoyed our experience very much. This was mainly down to Lucy whose service was exemplary. She combined excellent personal skills with a good knowledge of the kitchen/restaurant's daily operation, e.g. when haddock wasn't available she was able to offer sea bass instead. As an added bonus, she was very friendly and pulled a good pint! When the food arrived, we were not disappointed. Presentation and taste were very good and all plates were polished off. The fish and meat dishes were particularly good, whereas the vegetarian meal was just average. However, overall the whole experience was way above expectation and I would thoroughly recommend The Sportsman as a surprise treat.

Good service and excellent food

We went to the Sportsman for Christmas Dinner this year on Christmas Day, and it really didn’t disappoint. The staff were welcoming, attentive and so friendly, and the food was brilliant! We loved the turkey and the chocolate brownie was a particular highlight for me. A huge thank you to the staff and the chefs for cooking it, I’d hugely recommend going to eat here.

Was very disappointed when seven of us arrived to find the table was not ready, with sauce all over, dirty glasses left on the table, I had to ask someone to wipe it, and it was not overly busy. Two had nachos which was tortillas out of a bag, no where near as good as I've had before.Three of us had steak which you could hardly get the knife through it was very chewy, the chips was dry and only just warm. Two had fish and chips that was only just ok. The food as really gone down hill in my opinion.

Perfect spot for our group of 9 (inc 5 kids age 3-14) to get together for a reasonably priced meal together before Christmas. Staff were great, food was tasty (not massive portions but all well presented), and atmosphere was cosy and welcoming.

The food has really gone down in my opinion after being really good the last few times we have been.

The service and food were excellent at a very reasonable price. Well cooked, great portion sizes. Friendly staff. Clean and well presented, pleasant environment.

What a great place for a family meal. Lots of choice. All ages and diet catered for. Friendly staff, nothing was too much trouble. We will definitely visit again on our next journey to Yorkshire. Well done to all the staff at the sportsman.

Called in for the 50% discount and was well chuffed with the quality of food and the friendliness of the staff! The discount made it that little bit sweeter! I had a hot and spicy chicken burger witch i will definitely be calling back for. Big thanks to the chef and staff for making my monday evening very pleasent and enjoyable. I order via apps and the manager told me their chef gone already . So couldn't prepare my order. And asked me to cancel the order. Her attitude was like she ignores me as I am brown . She is racist. Astonished how racist people like her work as Manager !

It was amazing, top quality service all night, even though the pub was fully booked we didn't feel like we were missed at any points, the service was still fast and efficient, and the food was great, and came surprisingly quick considering the busy nature of the night.

Went for the Sunday quiz! Great fun with the quiz master being very entertaining with her eloquent presentation! Would recommend for a good way to spend the evening, well priced and poured pints.

Went to this pub recently for a bite to eat and a few beers. We loved everything about it! Very child friendly too. Well done to James and all the staff. We’ll hopefully be back some day!

Awful!!!! Food absolutely hit and miss - run out of meals on menues - food when it comes is often rubbish (steaks you literally cant cut with a steak knife, shepherd pie that had the briefest glimpse of meat/filling with lumpy mash on top, portion sizes VeRY small compared to other Ember Inns. Went as a family of 6, 2 of us literally got served when other 4 had finished their meals. One older member of bar staff really rude and abrupt. Even an elderly chap who'd ordered a meal at 40% off - first they got his order wrong, then when he had to reorder this bar woman serving him just told him he’d used the 40% discount so he couldnt have that again ! Took calling for the manager for him to get his meal with the discount. Go to 2 other Ember Inns in Sheffield - both are HUGELY better than the Sportsman. Wouldnt touch it again with a bargepole - even at 40% off the foods not worth it. OK for just a drink as a nice pub inside - just a real shame about the food and appalling staff attitudes - especially for a local pub. If they cant do better that at present then they need new managers to sort out all their staffing (bar and cooks) problems - and they have many!!!!

Went in for a quick pint on a Saturday afternoon. Lovely calm atmosphere, lovely staff and management. A stopping point always for me!

We came in last night and what is there to say about this place other than SHOCKING, a lady with long hair who was the manager and had the worst attitude, we sat nearly 2 hours with dirty plates whilst she stood talking and laughing out loud, I asked her politely to move our plates so we could order puddings and she gave me the dirtiest look and said she’d get one of her staff to do it, this didn’t happen for a further 20 minutes. We won’t return her and I advise anyone who’s planning on a nice meal here not to be bother, we’ve been coming here on and off for a few years and never seen the place so poorly managed. A real shame when this place used to be amazing

I have visited The Sportsman on many occasions over the years for office Christmas celebrations and family get togethers. Its staff are very professional and friendly and always willing to help. The food is great too. The menu varies over the years so there’s the chance to try something new on every visit. The decor of The Sportsman is smart, warm and welcoming. The fish and chips was great and so were the Indian dishes.

Brought a visiting friend from Australia in. Pub busy cus quiz night, but Lotte our server recommended the gluten free options of food and beer. Great evening!

We haven't been for a while bit came on our anniversary... The food was good.... However: I had 2 pints of Landlord and there was no sparkler on the pump thus the beer was flat as a proverbial... Looking at some of the other beers neither did they. Not the best experience

Visit the Sportsman at least once a month good selection of draught beer and lagers good choice of food and very tasty too! average prices want break the bank.

Popped in for a quiet pint. Staff very friendly, place was clean and welcoming. My only gripe was how the landlady barked at her younger staff in earshot of customers.

5 stars for the service ! The bar lady was amazing made us feel really welcome with having a dog and was really friendly . Ordered two meals the vegetarian meal wasn’t great and the halloumi on the skewer was rock hard however after a long walk was to hungry to complain and I don’t doubt for a second that it wouldn’t of been corrected if I had . Overall was worth the visit

My hubby and I Ordered a steak sandwich each for lunch,very pleasant girl took our order,she was taking orders and serving drinks We then waited one hour 10minutes for the sandwiches,tiny bits of steak (lukewarm) on half a ciabbatti,cold hard chips which we left The pub was not busy, Cannot recommend, very poor

I went to the sportsman for dinner with my son had a lovely meal sharon and Morgan couldn't be more friendlier and went above and beyond for my child as he as numerous allergies as he can become very upset when we go out to eat as there isn't always a big option but they couldn't do enough and he came out a very happy boy will definitely be eating there more regular thankyou again for your great service and kindness

DO NOT BOOK HERE FOR ANY FUNCTIONS! We booked the Sportsman for a wake but the service was appalling. The food was put out before anyone arrived, and had been left uncovered for some time so the 'hot' food was cold; there were no teas and coffees for our guests which had been booked; the manager tried to argue they hadn't been booked but who does not arrange teas and coffees at such an event? The manager didn't identify himself to us until prompted when I asked to speak to the manager. He said we couldn't have teas and coffees as it would affect his 'stock levels' and all he had in his diary was 'buffet' but there was water on the bar. Some of our guests had travelled a very long way to be with us and the last thing we wanted was for anyone to have to buy their own drinks. At the time of booking, we were advised on how many people to cater for and were told there was always more than enough food; there clearly wasn't. The so called 'hot' food was begrudgingly taken away but simply reheated (garlic bread was consequently brought back out rock hard and burnt). Given the health and hygiene regulations and the length of time the food will have been out, I strongly doubt any of what happened is acceptable. The food should NOT have been brought out until the main family arrived and even then, you allow everyone to get settled with a drink before bringing it all out. The plates were filthy, with dried food on them and we had to ask for these to be replaced with clean plates. The tables were sticky so clearly not wiped clean. There was no respect shown at any point and we were constantly having to apologise to our guests for the lack of drinks and terrible food. This was late afternoon so the pub was not busy and they knew how many guests to expect so there was no excuse for the terrible service. On what was a heart-breaking day, the service provided was an absolute disgrace and as an establishment you should be ashamed of your attitude and standards. The response when I paid at the end was a forced 'I'm sorry' which was only given after being prompted but this was far too little, too late.

Perfect service. Amazing with children. Make you feel wanted. Perfect food. Perfect establishment. Sharon is fantastic.

Once again cant fault the management or pub, they absolutely go above and beyond, our little boy absolutely loves sharon and cant wait to see her when we come, he gets a lolly pop and in return sharon gets a massive cuddle from him, and he doesn’t gives those out to everyone. Amazing service, atmosphere and all round lovely pub to be in.

As always a fantastic visit. We visited today with our 4yr old autistic son who loves to come for his fruit shoot mini cheddars and Lolly from auntie Shazzers box. Always a warm welcome and fantastic warm service.

We went at 4pm for food. Was not busy but you would expect your food to piping hot. It was Luke warm I had the gammon chips and pebbles ( peas ) but peas were rock hard and I got about 10 chips. Not the best meal for £11.95.

The shepherds pie was very nice but the vegetables were uncooked and inedible. We have eaten at the sportsman many times but this was by far our worst experience.We mentioned it to our server but no one came to deal with our complaint.

Busy, food looks nice, not too expensive food or drinks. Glasses are sometimes random as to the drink you get it served in.

Young lads behind bar were not really bothered whether they served you or not - coffee machine "not working" , hard to believe a food pub like this has no coffee facilities for its customers, no offer of alternative, The smaller things make the difference.

Mediocre at best! Bought-in, frozen, processed fare which wouldn't go amiss in Iceland. Saturday evening and 3/4 of the tables not occupied, verify my comments. Friendly welcoming chap behind the bar, but the disheveled 'zombie' waiting on our table couldn't have been anymore miserable if he'd tried.....If you're not happy in your work then move on and find something else! Not been here for a good while and certainly won't be making a return anytime soon. P.S please don't patronise myself by copy n' pasting one of your generic replies, instead use your time to get on to head -office and start afresh with the sole aim of making 'The Sportsman' what it used to be!

This is a prime example of the older generation trying to intimidate a young person. So, I was at Sportsman close to Crosspool Tavern for my sister's and niece's birthday. I went to order my food: BBQ wings, a burger, and Belgian waffles. I asked a woman who served me for a BBQ dip, and she said I could ask for it when they brought the food. I was okay with that. The lady explained that she was new and asked if I wanted fruit or a brownie with my waffles. I said brownie. Then, a man brought out my food, but I realized the BBQ dip was missing. I asked another male staff member, and he said it's 99p. I was okay with that, but he brought and was abit funny with me. I thought it was weird, but I ignored it. I also asked for my dessert to go. This man took my receipt and I told him I asked for the waffles and came back with a brownie and what looked like a small whipped cream in a box. I wanted to exchange it, but when the man at the till saw me coming, he turned around. Then, the lady who served me took my food and my dessert into the kitchen area to get exchanged . The man who was weird about the BBQ sauce came out and shouted at me, asking what I wanted. I told him I ordered waffles. He said, 'Well, everything is plated up.' I tried to explain that it wasn't my order and thats no my problem. but he kept repeating that everything was plated up, trying to force me to have an order I didn't even order. Finally, he said he'll go and tell the person who plated it up. Then, the lady who originally served me mentioned that he was having a bad day once again i said this is not my problem. After that, a big woman came out and started screaming at me, asking what I wanted. She shouted aggressively in my face, and I told her I ordered the waffles. The grown man was there, but he didn't say anything. Feeling threatened, I burst into tears, and everyone in the restaurant started laughing at me. My dad went to complain, but they lied to him, saying that I started shouting at them(anything to cover their backs), when in reality, I just asked for the waffles I even asked for them with nothing on to make it easier for them . It's really disgusting and awful that we still live in an age where people make stuff up about people and Intimidate people. Also, when the staff came to our table to clear the plates they lied about the situation. I also say people are dramatic about complaining about customer service but this is worst experience I have ever had in my life, this place deserves to be on Sheffield star due to bad customer service. I don't understand if you clearly don't like your job leave. I have read the reviews on google and trustpillot and there is similarities in peoples reviews such as the customer service. You give have ruined my weekend and my family's birthday. Also, the burgers came out me and nephew asked for different ones I asked for one with no tomato and he wanted his plain when the server which one is which he said I DONT KNOW.

Nice food Nice staff when problem arose chef went berserk to young lady only asking desert be changed to take away as wrong one brought she was very aggressive and made sensitive young lady very emotional she was part of large party as expected she didn't like it back when confronted back party left did not have dessert as young lady still emotional even though we all paid we have eaten there many times and my son and is business partners have eaten many times never once any problem before always Nice staff you always look after your customers but one for one staff member it spoiled the night (never again) again sorry to all the other staff

A bit of a wait but the food was excellent
