Lovely service, good was lovely, and great price, will go again

Mid week dinner excellent value and service . We the steak & chips special deal which they were currently running which was excellent . Lovely steak, super crispy chips mushroom & tomato glass of wine . The portions size was really good and the server was really friendly and respectful . Made for a lovely experience . Will visit again & try their al la carte menu next time .

Had a voucher went for dinner can’t fault anything food served hot very tasty really lovely atmosphere and Winnie was fabulous took time to chat I would recommend visiting The Yard

Unfortunately my first visit to The Yard will be my last . I left feeling very underwhelmed and out of pocket. There was 4 of us and one ordered steak. When the order was taken he was not asked how he would like his steak cooked. He would have said medium rare. His first couple of bites he said were ok but then he noticed it was rare , very rare . He did not want to mention there as we’d already waited over half an hour for our starters. The bread plank was very plain , I thought there might had been a selection of breads. Belly pork was ok but nothing special . I think £150 was very overpriced for what we had.

Nice cosy setting.. booked here two weeks ago.. came into Chester to be called by Winnie to say kitchen was closed. Rebooked us in for today. Only us in there .. questioned about the groupon deal which had already been redeemed. The wine was a 125ml glass .. no apology about us having to return Sunday lunch was nice .. Dessert I chose Eton Mrss .. cream was off. Wouldn't return. Sad as I have been here before ..

Had to update my review from last year when me and the Missus went last time. I've been going here for years and this is my 4th or 5th time and once again the food and service never fails. It's probably the best fine food you can get in Chester. My pictures speak for themselves but even they don't do it justice of how good the food is here, their long term Chef is a miracle worker in the kitchen. The food is simply incredible, the wine is exquisite. The staff polite, friendly and experienced and venue is perfect for a couple enjoying a romantic meal or even for small group of friends treating themselves to a fine meal and drinks together. I genuinely can't rate it high enough, we're definitely going back for our anniversary again next year.

As much as a quiet restaurant can put anyone off sometimes. Here, it was lovely. The young woman who was on this evening really did make us feel comfortable. Our food was amazing and her attentiveness made the quiet restaurant light up. Can't deny good food and a good server.

meh... average at best. Staff were rude at first as we couldn't even tell if the place was open despite having a booking. After that, it felt uncomfortable but we moved on and sat down. Had a steak platter, again just meh. I've had nicer steak bought from Aldi. Ended up leaving most of it so we resorted to getting desserts. I tried the creme brûlée and it was genuinely better than the main course, very delicious. But overall, a very inauthentic Italian experience. The decor, the logo, everything sets this place up to be a nice slightly more expensive treat. But, it just fails miserably. Goes without saying i won't be returning or telling anyone about this place.

The food is 5 star wow. So tasty. Good prices on the menu. The staff are so friendly as well and helpful. Been a few times woll be going back.

We aren’t ones to ever get round to reviewing but this place really deserves it! I Visited with my husband and 5 year old earlier this evening. The was food was fantastic, but the service from Winnie was honestly the best we’ve ever had in any restaurant, hotel or anywhere quite frankly! What a genuinely lovely lady you are and despite being clearly very busy you went above and beyond to accommodate us, what a credit you are. Its tough going out with a 5 year old and we’de had a pretty disastrous day so your warm smile and fabulous service was so much appreciated and turned a birthday disaster into a fab evening. Five Stars All Around! I booked The Yard cocktail making masterclass for my hen do on Saturday and we were not disappointed! Sophie who looked after our group was amazing 🤍 she ensured we all had the best time and our glasses were never empty! The charcuterie boards were also a lovely touch and very tasty. Highly recommend!

I went with my daughter for an evening meal. We both chose to have 2 courses. The restaurant is really lovely inside and very relaxing. The waitress was friendly and attentive. We both chose bruschetta as a starter it was delicious. Then I had steak and my daughter had carbonara. Both meals were amazing. We both really enjoyed everything while we were there and will definitely be going back.

We were staying at The Queen at Chester for the weekend so The Yard was only a short walk from the hotel. Lovely intimate restaurant. Couldn’t fault the food and service. Would highly recommend.

Had an unforgettable afternoon at The Yard in Chester, where Head Chef Carl works his magic in the kitchen. Trust me, your taste buds will thank you. We kicked things off with the sharing meat plank, and it was so divine we nearly reenacted a medieval feast scene. Loaded with salami, chorizo, Serrano ham, olives, and burrata, it was a platter so perfect it almost made us forget our table manners. Next up, the main courses. The lobster with chips and salad was a maritime dream come true – so fresh, I half-expected it to do a little jig on my plate. The chicken breast with Gorgonzola gnocchi was equally impressive, with a sauce so creamy and tangy it should come with its own fan club. Dessert was where Chef Carl really flexed his culinary muscles. We indulged in affogato, a delightful blend of espresso and ice cream that made us feel both sophisticated and wired. The chocolate pot with honeycomb and vanilla ice cream was a sweet symphony of flavors, and the accompanying dessert wine was like a warm hug in a glass. Chef Carl, you’re a culinary wizard, and The Yard is your enchanted realm. Thank you for an afternoon of pure deliciousness. We’ll definitely be back – possibly with stretchy pants next time!

Daughter suggested going here and we weren't disappointed. Food was excellent and Carl provided great service as he was on his own when we arrived doing chef duties and front of house! Will definitely go back

Absolutely gorgeous food, I had sea bass with a side salad!! Very tasty with a chocolate pot for dessert, tried a friend's gnocci dish and the mackerel dish - Absolutely delicious 😋

No idea what the food would have been like, I got bored waiting and left. There was a photographer in, taking pictures of the food for the restaurant. The kitchen was fully occupied preping food for the camera, with no interest in the cusomers. The atmosphere was also noisy and focused on the photographer.

Hands down the best meal we had on our vacation! We stopped in early on a Tuesday night and were greeted by friendly staff and offered a seat immediately. Our server was attentive and helpful, and I cannot say enough about the meals. My husband had a pork dish and I had the chicken and gnocchi. Both were spectacular. We also got the orange tart for dessert, and if you're a fan of key lime pie, you HAVE to get it!

Visited on Saturday night for my partners birthday meal. Service was brilliant as was the food. Young lady who served us said it was her first shift and she was great! Would recommend to anyone looking for a luxurious dining experience

My husband and I have dined at The Yard with friends and family on several occasions over the past few years and we always enjoy the excellent food, service and relaxed atmosphere. It’s definitely a favourite! We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend a meal cooked by the very skilled chef and owner, Carl, and the warm welcome and service provided by Kingdom, the co-owner, and Olivia, our more recent server.

If you’re ever in Chester, please visit this restaurant! We had group of 20 which i pre planned with Debbie.. she was amazing! Very accommodating, food was fabulous, service was excellent and friendly staff.. our night was made very enjoyable! :)

The best review I can give is that this restaurant is that it is very average, there is nothing particularly good or particularly bad.

The food looked delicious online so we visited The Yard whilst on a weekend trip to Chester. We weren’t disappointed. The starter and mains were amazing. So much flavour and cooked to perfection. Very reasonably priced for the quality of the dishes. Definitely worth a visit.

Gorgeous food, lovely intimate atmosphere very much recommended

Came here as a last minute booking and the food was delicious! We had really nice pasta dishes for mains that were presented nicely and tasted great with a reasonable price tag. The only thing that let the experience down was the waiter was wearing tracksuit bottoms and a gym top, would have thought a place like this would have some sort of uniform.

Delicious food but couldn't believe we were charged £22 for x2 Eton Mess! (was a special and waitress didn't tell us the price). Just felt ripped off and would never pay that for some fruit and cream.

Had an amazing lunch: Roast cod with crushed potatoes and samphire in a champagne butter sauce, and a white onion soup, sage oil and grated chestnut to start. Absolutely delicious!! Amazing place and wonderful staff. I'll definitely be back and highly recommend!

Food was stunning service dreadful staff more interested in chatting to each other and looking at there mobile phones than serving us. Wasn't happy that the bill automatically added a tip as I genuinely don't feel your staff deserve it. The customer should decide if they wish to pay a tip or not the restaurant was only partially lit

We had a lovely Sunday lunch here, food was yummy, I had the chicken risotto, so tasty. We were served by Liv who was a very pleasant young girl who helped us with our order and Maisie help us with our drinks, recommending a yummy cocktail to us. Would definitely visit again

FOOD fantastic - hence the 5 🌟 ✅ SERVICE - poor, an ice bucket and stand was knocked over - it was neither tables, it was just left from previous dinners. It wasn’t cleared up whilst we were there. We had an issue (see below), that the young staff could not address, as the manager was off site! ATMOSPHERE - if you like a relaxed vibe, soft music, the right kind of lighting - then an Italian would be your first choice, as was the Yard for us during our stay in Chester (8 of us in total). However, if you like that vibe drowned out by house music coming from the basement then the Yard is a must! Just in case you can drown out the house music (you would have to try real hard), then you would be reminded of the bass from the vibration on your seats, table and your drinks! Think glass of water, in Jurassic Park. We asked for the chef to come out and he never! Really disappointing and takes away the great food that we had there and so sorry for the staff with no manager or chef that would come and speak to us!

Sadly, I had high hopes for this place. Think it's one of the worst restaurants I've been too in a long time. Food was average at best, wine was disgusting, even after trying a different one. Waitresses couldn't look less interested, if anything, strangely timid and the manager. Wow... Thankfully we didn't have to encounter him, but to see how he communicated with another couple that were complaining sealed it for us, we will never return. He was incredibly confrontational and clearly needs to go on a hospitality course. Honestly, spend your money elsewhere and support a business that deserves it. This is not that place.

Lovely food and friendly service

Dined as a family of four and 7 month baby on Sunday 22nd October at approx 1.30pm. Liv was the waitress and although alone she was brilliant at explaining what we could have from the menu, make genuine conversation and delivered some old fashioned hospitality. The food was delicious we had a range of starters standout was the black pudding and sardines. For main we all had a Sunday roast and we were blown away with the portion size and just the tastiness of the food. Thank you to the head chef and Liv for what was a memorable lunch x

My first time at The Yard and I will not be returning. My boyfriend and I went on a Saturday evening. Turned up and the staff looked shocked that we were there even though we had booked. The table we were given was dirty and the waiter then slammed the cutlery down. We had to ask for drinks and then again find someone to take our order. The starter came out and was nice but nothing exciting. My boyfriend then had to go to the bar to get more drinks as the staff were no where to be seen. Main meals arrived - my order was wrong and my boyfriends steak was cold. What I had ordered was no longer available and I needed to pick something else. Not once were we apologised too. We then asked to send the steak back and was met with a blank expression. As of why didn’t we want cold steak. At this point we cancelled the food order and said we would leave. I had no faith that what we were going to get was worth waiting for. All in all a disaster of an evening. Could be easily turned around by employing competent waiters.

Have just had a meal at The Yard with 3 friends. The food was excellent but the service and attitude of the staff is very poor. It is clear this comes from whoever is in charge. One example is being encouraged to use groupon but then being told we should have quoted groupon when we booked.

Need to clear glasses etc quicker. Side dishes very expensive for what they were.

We had an amazing meal at this independent restaurant where the food, ambiance, and hospitality were exceptional. From the minute we arrived, we were made to feel extremely welcome by Kingdom, the owner. The food was first class and the pricing reasonable given the quality of the locally sourced ingredients. All in all, it was a very enjoyable and memorable experience. We would highly recommend a visit.

WOW!!!! What a great place. Food was amazing. Simple,fresh but amazing flavours. Black pudding that had sweet notes at first then spices came in! Pork loin with just enough fat on the edge to enhance the flavour. Apple slices warmed through in the pork juices!! Fantastic!! Got to compliment the staff aswell. Friendly,polite and great knowledge. Thank you ladys.

Sunday evening service so, so slow, I felt I had got nearer to my pension just sitting there. The mains, when they turned up (75mins after arrival) were decidedly average. Skipped the desert as feared the Grim Reaper would call if we waited any longer. Not just us, other people walked out too whilst we were there, at least they didn't get trapped by a much delayed service. The whole experience made even worse by the loud mouth racist on an adjacent table ( not the restaurant's issue) and then negative reaction by one of the front of house staff when we declined the service charge. By way of minor compensation for a evening spoilt the restaurant did at least knock the booze off the bill. I appreciate things are hard in hospitality at the moment but any restaurant worth staying open must be capable of managing their input of bookings and their staff available. The pub/restaurant very close by to the Yard, where we retreated to, was obviously better run as they were able to put food in front of customers within 15mins from our simple observations. It's not difficult - meet your customers expectations or the business will die.

Booked this place because we didn’t know anywhere in Chester and it looked very nice on Google maps. Wanted an Italian with a bit of atmosphere. It’s really nothing like it looks online as it’s on the main road and very small inside. Needless to say we thought the food looked nice enough to give it a go. After sitting for over 30mins I had to go and ask for a drinks menu and to be served. By that time we were also ready to order food but were told we had to wait for other people to be served. Starters came fairly soon after ordering and we all ok. But the mains were average at best. The rump steak was ordered medium rear and came well done and when we raised it was taken away with no comments on what was happening. 2 of us had finished our meals before the waitress came back to say the steak was on its way, which left my son eating on his own. Even when we asked for some ketchup we were told we had to wait for her to clean a table first! 2 drinks we ordered never arrived and we left the restaurant very disappointed and underwhelmed. Not great from start to finish.

A very generous two stars. Exceptionally slow service, and my food was hugely underwhelming a small amount of chicken, a couple of small potatoes and a salad leaf, all swimming in a far too thin sauce, for just shy of £20. Desert was OK but again expensive and uninspired. Others in my party seemed to fare slightly better, though all dishes looked pretty basic to me. Place was busy, staff didn't seem able to provide anything more than generic pleasantries. Wine was decent. Very disappointing.

Cannot recommend this restaurant more highly. Fantastic service, sensational food, lovely setting and atmosphere. If you are thinking about going just do it! You will not be disappointed!!

Lovely staff and atmosphere great food

Mixed feelings menu looks better than the image of the restaurant from outside but actually it didn’t deliver on taste. A few people have recommended this place but I don’t know why lacked atmosphere food wasn’t great and it’s not cheap. Certainly won’t be going back. 4 of us eat there and we each only liked one of our three courses and that was just a like not a loved.

Booked a meal via Groupon. we arrived early and was told the table wasn't ready. We went for a drink downstairs, the atmosphere was brilliant. We were led to our table after a 5 minute wait. The staff were extremely polite, as we sat at the table the manager came and explained how the Groupon voucher worked. The meal was really good, served within a good time and really tasty. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT

Lovely restaurant with delicious food. My wife is gluten and dairy free so it was so refreshing to have such good choice from the menu.

This was the second visit to The Yard for my husband and I, having truly enjoyed the first. We invited a couple of friends to have dinner with us so we could catch up, having not seen each other for over 20 years. At the time of booking, I had requested a relatively quiet table so that we could chat comfortably. When Aimee, the delightful General Manager, greeted us on arrival, we were impressed that she had considered my request and seated us in a pleasant, quiet booth. It was a superb evening again! The service, food and ambiance were all excellent. You can sense that the team at The Yard are all passionate about offering a great dining experience. Of course, it was a real treat to try more of Carl the Head Chef’s dishes, especially when we explained to our friends that he had worked with Gordon Ramsay in his 2 Michelin Star restaurant. Furthermore, there is nothing pretentious about The Yard. It’s great food at great prices!

What a fantastic dining experience. We had dinner here and what a great place to eat. A fantastic menu which has something for everyone. The quality of the food is exceptional as is the chef that prepared it. This is one of the best dining experiences I've had for a very long time. Such friendly staff. Lovely little restaurant with fabulous service and even better food.

Extremely disappointing experience. Pre- booked 6 weeks in advance and listed my allergies on the booking. Also followed up with a call a few days before the day to confirm these dietary requirements. On arrival I was told the team could not make anything suitable as the allergy information had not been passed on to the kitchen and I ended up asking for a refund of my deposit and leaving. A very disappointing experience and unfortunately a spoilt surprise meal to celebrate a birthday!!
