Visited in mid-February on the back of a recommendation. The setting is lovely, car park is "Compact and Bijou!" and the bistro itself is very stylish. Our waiting staff were excellent, not too pushy, very pleasant, and helpful. The whole party were blown away by the starters. Hummus, seafood Dahl, winter salad and souffle were all absolutely spectacular. The dhal was probably the best thing I have eaten in a restaurant in over a year. Because of the quality of the starters we had very high hopes for the main... Which were not met for any of us. They were not awful, or even bad, but just "kind of ok" in each case. Rarebit and Jamaican dish were not great, my Jambalaya was ok, and the honey mustard chicken was the most highly rated amongst us. The Jambalaya was listed as containing lobster bisque and I could not detect any seafood or lobster flavour at all. The spots of chimichurri sour cream were also lacking lustre and added nothing to the dish. The haddock batter was not crispy... The roasted sweet corn sauce and pickled onion rings were great and really stood out in what I felt was a bland dish which I had expected more of. We decided against ordering puddings. I would consider eating here again if I'm in the area, but might choose 2-3 starters over a starter and main.

Sunday Lunch at the yan was - "Just wow!" The four of of has two sharing platters - between us we tried all three meats - beef, lamb and pork - and rated them delicious, but the local Herdwick Lamb gets our top score (with a great fresh mint sauce too). Huge, crisp Yorkshires, crunchy roast and creamy mashed potatoes (my grandmother would have been impressed), cauli cheese, delicious veg ... plus friendly and helpful service. The sticky toffee pud and cheese boards went down well - but the blackcurrant rolypoly with paul pink custard won the day. I will be trying to replicate this at home. The Yan also has a good wine list - as the driver, I enjoyed a Sea Buckthorn gin and tonic. We will be back!

Had a fabulous stay at the Yan. The room was warm, cosy, and spotlessly clean, the food was absolutely delicious, and it’s in such a stunning location. Walking up to Fairfield Peak straight from the room, bliss!

The Yan recently hosted us for a photoshoot for Go Outdoors, the team were incredibly helpful and welcoming, and patient with us with all our crew and vehicles. The setting of The Yan is stunning, you feel immersed in nature, but also close to Grasmere and Ambleside for exploring. The catering which the team provided was wonderful also. Thank you so much to the team at The Yan.

Glad we have booked the bistro, the food was amazing. We went for two courses, with one lamb and one vegetarian Sunday roast. The bistro is nice and cosy, and the staff is really nice. The only regret I have is that I couldn't manage 3 courses. We would definitely recommend and come back.

My wife and I had a wonderful evening at the Yan celebrating a birthday. We often struggle to find gluten free vegetarian options but not on this occasion. The hummus and cheese toastie starters were amazing, the lamb was incredible. I've never eaten lamb as good anywhere. The desserts were to die for and we even got a candle in my wife's dessert too celebrate. To marks all round. Thank you guys, we'll definitely be back x

Location, service and food 10/10. My partner and I have been visiting the Lake District for years and this is the one place we keep coming back to. It's really tricky finding somewhere that's consistently brilliant, and The Yan is just that. Counting down the days to when we can return!

Went her for dinner after a long hike. Location is stunning and cosy restaurant. Staff could have been a bit more attentive, especially since it was only half full. Starter delicious, we had the naan for main and the flavours were lovely but the nan itself was very stale which made it difficult to eat, onion bhajis was not great, saying this as someone that has a Indian parter so had a fair few. Dessert was again fantastic, not too sweet either. Just perfect.

Had a wonderfully relaxed evening with friends. This has become our go to place when we want to spend quality time and catch up, we can always rely on a lovely welcoming atmosphere and yummy food, ambience is great, and you are not required to yell across the table to be heard. This evenings highlights were the baked brie and winter salad, along with all of the desserts, special shout out for the tiramisu, which was devoured by my partner who once quite famously told a waiter in Italy that he had never had a better tiramisu than his sisters! We will be back

Firstly, if you have any pre-stay queries, they are always answered so quickly and with humour - a great first impression! I have eaten in The Yan a number of times now, with friends, my partner and by myself. I really love the cosy feel of the bistro and also, that tables are set out so they are not all crammed in alongside one another, it gives such a feeling of space and of privacy. The ambience and service is just perfect, nothing stiff or formal, just the right side of friendly and relaxed. I don't think I've ever had a bad meal at The Yan! The food is really very good indeed and just the right portion sizes. I've had the famous shepherd's pie a number of times now - unctuous melting cheese on top, fluffy mash, exceptional pulled meat and so tender. Perfect comfort food! I had Sunday lunch with my partner and we both agreed it was fantastic. The glamping pod was so well thought out and set up. Loved the little porch to shelter from the rain when removing muddy boots and it was also the perfect spot to star gaze at night, just incredible. Inside was so cosy and had a lovely warm feeling to it. Lots of little extras such as The Yan book, the sticky toffee pudding bites (yum!), plenty of crockery and cutlery and lights and plug sockets in convenient places. Easy to put luggage under the bed for storage and use the workspace nearby for stuff. The shower was hot and great pressure, I would personally like a bit more storage in the shower cubicle as there's nowhere to put shower gel etc and also near the sink but appreciate this is tricky! Such amazing views and so quiet at night too, the stay far exceeded expectations. It was reassuring to have staff on site in case of issues too but there were none. Ordering food to the pod from the bistro via the QR code was so easy too and felt such a treat. In terms of location, The Yan is in the perfect position to explore many local attractions, go walking or just take in the views. It's got the best of both worlds: quiet and scenic but in the thick of it. You get amazing quality food that is unpretentious but utterly delicious, easy, no-fuss, can-do service and well thought out luxurious and very comfortable accommodation.

Lovely meals. I wasn't too big on some of the other places in the local area when I was visiting, then I found the Stan Laurel Inn - the food is great, much more special than your typical 'pub grub'. I'd definitely visit again if I'm around Ulverston. edit: went back after visiting the area for a walk. Curried mince special was good, served with nice freshly made chips.

We noticed this cafe when heading into Ambleside and decided to give it a whizz for a coffee and a snack…. What a great find, lovely and clean, comfortable atmosphere and great views. As a lover of pistachio lattes I was not disappointed 😊 and the fruit bread really hit the spot - thank you xx

We had the best wedding at Broadoaks in October last year. Everything was amazing. Issie, our wedding coordinator was great, as were all the staff throughout our two days stay. The place itself is stunning and was great for our wedding of around 35 people.
