The Woodthorpe in Bury

We visited as it was dog friendly & after visiting Heaton park on a Saturday afternoon. The dog friendly area definitely needs tables that fits more than 3. Little round tables not great when we were squeezed together. A good selection of food. Appealing. The food took 1hr to arrive. Was delicious full of flavour risotto.presented well. The place is under staffed. A few tweaks and they could gain the 5 star 🌟

Lovely pub,really cosy and a lot of history. The food is below par.oven chips/fries and doenst always taste fresh.think a lot of it is pre made and refrigerated.but I have had experiences of it tasting a bit old.i think it’s expensive for what they serve up,also there’s an older lady that works there not sure if she is a manager or something but she is extremely rude and arrogant.i left my menu at the bar and she stomped over to the table gave me a filthy look and put it back in the slot.never experienced anything like that before it was rather strange.and made me uncomfortable.the building itself is the appeal,but won’t be paying for food from here again.

Disappointing there’s only Holts’ lager on draught.

A great place to gather with family and friends. Lots of different dining areas to choose from (Inc outdoors) with tables to suite couples up to large groups. A variety of different food on the menu with something to suit everybody. Lovely, friendly staff.

Lovely unique pub great beers great landlady, great service, what more could you want.

Stayed overnight midweek, lovely super king bedroom, very clean comfy bed bathroom and linens all spotless, good welcome tray and kettle was super clean too. Nice decor my only criticism is that as it such a lovely big room another chair would be good as 1 chair 2 people not ideal. We had a pleasant meal in the bar and the staff looked after us very well indeed, our bags were carried up to our room on arrival which was very helpful

Poor, had to wait 1 3/4 hours to receive our meal and then one meal was not as requested. All the fault of the kitchen, waiters were fine. Just a crap kitchen.

We called ahead to ask if there was a gluten free menu as there isn't any information on the website, we were told yes. Then upon arriving we asked for the gluten free menu and were given a folder of all the allergens, not easy to read through at all and only one thing on the entire menu suitable for gluten free. Gluten free is not a choice, it's a medical allergy and usually service regarding this is better. Disappointed as we wasted time when we had called to check. Atmosphere in carpeted area okay, other areas shabby and although listed as dog friendly, they can only go in certain areas which were already full of unfriendly dogs.

Food usually ok 19/08/2024 however a different story my family and I had a meal which took an hour to arrive complained to bar staff who replied we are busy if that was busy you shouldn't be in this type of job when the food arrived we'd asked for a steak medium to well done it's was that rare you could've thrown it back in the field and slapped it's arse and it would've still been alive,the ciabatta steak meal was pathetic the chips had been under the lamp too long and gone stiff quit inedible in total a meal which took 3 hours from start to finish should've been 2 hours tops upto this point I highly rated your pub I suggest you sack your chef and start again.

Great pub, loads of seating indoors and out. Nice roasts on a Sunday.

Went to have a couple drinks and a meal Lad on bar helpfull and polite .. All went downhill after being served It was like being at crufts Dogs barking non stop Getting in way of waitresses .. about 8 dogs But nothing said or done By owners or staff .. Let the Dogs Have place I think if u need to take dogs with you They should behave If that were kids summat would been said We had drink and left no food Wont be returning And place smelt doggy ....

Hit and miss with food here. Sometimes it's good last night was poor. Cold fries on wife's order. My chips and beans were just about warm. Pie was very hot. So looks like it was plated up and left for a while. Presentation was awful. Reminded me of school dinners. 40 min wait when the place wasn't overly busy. Had to ask for cutlery. Nobody checked during our meal if everything was OK. Had some nice meals here before and some average ones. Can't fault the beer or atmosphere. Beautiful pub with plenty of parking. Won't chance eating here again though. That's twice recently we've been dissatisfied. We tried the Sunday lunch recently and that was excellent. Needs consistency.

Great service the staff are belting, foods good and the beer is reasonably priced. The huts in the beer garden are a greatvaddition too

Went there with my friends and our kids, it was a sunny afternoon and we enjoyed dining outdoor, it wasn’t so busy. Loved the food, i think it’s reasonably priced too. I like the location and there was free parking

Don't serve cakes (guess you still go to Slatterys) any more but the booths outside are an amazing seating alternative.

If I could leave a 1 star I would. I don't like leaving bad reviews, I never go out for a meal as I work in a pub myself and always working. Came out with my friends. Waited an hour for my food for it then to come out without being told the main ingredient wasn't avaible and had to find out myself. Then instead of being refunded and offered something else the good was taken away from me aggressively with cash then handed back with no consideration.

I'm giving a 2 star as the staff are lovely and very accommodating. Food is a no go medium steak burned, Featherblade steak like a rock. Very unfortunate as came a few months ago and food was lovely. Holts need to buck up as this is a nice pub with great staff but will soon lose customers as the food is shocking. Joseph holt would be embarrassed at this food.

Great pup , great atmosphere, the cryst gold is a very good pint of lager and the staff are friendly too.. lovely to sit outside when the sun's out...highly recommend

Went on a Thursday which is advertised as curry night... didn't have the curry I wanted off the curry menu!? So you know chef Mike is busy warming frozen meals up. Also, you can not substitute rice for chips, so I had to order chips extra. Then had to pay an extra £5 to change the meal even though it was their fault they didn't have all the curry's they advertise on curry night. Got a steak instead. Tasted like nothing and the chips were bog standard. Could have gone to wetherspoons, and it would have tasted better and half the price with a drink. Also, the staff were questioning why we wanted the bill when food, which we didn't order, came to the table. Bad first and last experience.

Slow service, food came wrong, no scraps with the fish and chips, chips just warm. Pay attention to the payment as deals don’t go through and you will pay more

Beautiful pub, lots of parking, great function room for sizeable events. Food is really nice.

Historical building and beautifully kept.

Good food , nice atmosphere only one down side we found felt slightly rushed as soon as one of us had finished eating plates where been taken away while the rest of the group where still eating, all in all if was passing again would eat here again

The manager takes on young staff uses them with low pay then sacks them with no warning. Unprofessional

ABSOLUTELY SHOCKING...... garlic mushroom starter was tasteless and mushrooms floating in fat. Disgusting. It used to come in sauce (which it still states... featerblade steak was braising steak amd not a slow cooked piece of steak.. dry as can be.... fish was dry and batter burnt... Kids meals were the driest little nuggets and tinyist plate of food. It's a shambles.. never seen it so bad. It's a shame really. Tried to make it posh rather that a pub meal..... shocking. I don't think I'll be back again.

Gaynor & Gary went above and beyond for our family funeral last week. They accommodated us all so well and their thoughtfulness and amazing service meant that it was the best send off. Would highly recommend. Thank you so much.

Good food, great staff, good room fabulous afternoon

Nice place although very expensive. Didn't stay as a guest of the hotel, simply had drinks with friends .. 3 drinks (pint bitter, 330ml bottle of Moretti and a glass of red wine) and a packet of nuts= £18.00 The most confusing thing was, three rounds and three different prices 🤷

Great place to drink and meet up with friends. Super outside space with bench tables and a canopy area to the side. I had fish and chips sadly it wasn't the best I've had! That said the menu is good, the staff are great! The four stars are for the holts bitter!

Visited for food. Whilst the food was lovely we waited over an hour for it. Wait staff all seem very stressed, but did manage the situation well and were friendly.

Ordered a small dish of chicken skewers, I didn’t expect it to be 2 tiny pieces of chicken for £7! Caesar salad was vile, tasted like chemicals and the food took over an hour to arrive and most of the order was mixed up but everyone was too hungry to send it back. Kids meals were dry and bland. Shame because the young staff are lovely but the older woman who served us was incredibly rude. Second time I’ve been now and been served by the same rude person and the food has been poor. In a nice local spot but don’t think we will be returning, over priced, some rude stuff and bad management 😕

Had a lovely lunch here today. Warm welcome from staff and a delicious Chicken tikka flatbread. The quality of the food and the value was really good.

It took an hour to get our food everything was warm nearly cold

Went here to watch the football and to have food. Got to the bar to order at 19:58 at the same time as a resident who also wanted to order food, we were both told that the kitchen closes at 8 and the chef had already packed up. I said but its still 19:59 and I have been here a good minute or so. The resident asked where he could now get food from as he was staying at the hotel, the lady said she would go ask the chef. A minute later she came back and said that the resident could have food but i couldn't. A bit out of order cosidering i was technically there before him and before 8 and they were going to open the kitchen for the resident anyway. We bought drinks and watched the football, i ordered a chinese from uber because i was hungry, maybe not the right way to go about it but i had purchased stuff in their bar and have also eaten there numerous times before. The landlady came in and told me i couldnt eat there as it was a premises that sold food, i said i know that but you wouldn't serve me 2 minutes before closing time and im hungry, i did attempt to purchase food from you. She said no so i told her that i would eat in my car in the car park and come back to sit with my boyfriend after who was watching the football, she then told me i could not eat on the premises at all. I mean seriously, in my own car, really? Maybe next time she should honour the opening times on her website and treat every customer the same, with professionalism. Nowhere on the website does it say 'after 19:58, the kitchen is only open for residents' .

Brilliant location, superb staff wonderful evening, safe carpark ,food was warm and delicious, My 60 party was enjoyed by all family and friends.

Nothing flash, no gimmicks but you get what you'd expect to get, a nice meal in good surroundings. The staff remind me of a good football referee who runs the game well but you hardly know he's there!

Our first time hear with my husband & mother in law for lunch was realy Impressed the food & was delicious well worth the money the staff were very helpful & polite we will definitely come back thank you for a lovely afternoon all the staff at the woodthorpe.

Gothic awesomeness ,it's a fact Joseph Holts the master brewer used this huge gothicmansion for home early on after the success....even if you don't drink. Try food and soak in the history you are bequeathed with in the area....it would work with a decent menu..

What a transformation. Haven't been for years. Quite posh now. Pricey but stylish.

A quick catch up with friends after a walk in the park. Dogs were made welcome. We only had snacks but I have eaten here before and do recommend it. Tables can't be booked though and are offered on a first come first served basis so do get there in good time if it's a popular time.

Myself and 4 members of my family dined here on the 23rd January 2024. We called for tea at approx 6pm. We ordered 3 burgers with fries and side portions of onion rings ect. The whole thing was garbage the parties were burnt and dry, The lettuce were limp and the bun was wet on th3 underside plus the fries were warm not hot. On one meal there was green beans which we thought had come from a tin. The whole experience was horrendous. We pooled the meat and Chicken to take home for the dogs. I would strongly recommend that if you are considering eating here select another option. O and I was charges £4.99 for a pint on the diamond Holt brew which I thought was outrageous. Be warned

Went for lunch on New Years Day, food was okay but service was seriously slow

Absolute shambles of a place and staff not a clue what they are doing , we rang up a to book this place for a party of 12, which they said they don't take bookings but would accommodate us so explained it was a party of 12 with 2 digs and needed a highchair, on arrival we was allocated to some seats while waiting of a table as on ordering drinks were told we couldn't sit there because no dogs allowed and taken to another part where we got seated again which was OK, then when the rest of the party arrived we were told we could sit there as no children were allowed in that part only adults and dogs , so were told we had to move to another room where we had to stand up and wait for a table to come free which was imbarrasing and very off putting fir the customers who were already seated in , there was organisation whatsoever ever we deffinetly won't be returning.

Excellent place. We met family here for lunch over Christmas. Beautifully decorated. Family loved the fact it had been a family home. They said it felt of history. Food was excellent and a reasonable price

A first class Sunday lunch. Being a Sunday it was very busy and we had to wait just over an hour for the food but it was well worth the wait. Succulent roast turkey with all the trimmings, roast gammon and a nut roast, extras included cauliflower cheese and pigs in blankets. Service was excellent, the staff couldn’t do enough. Will definitely go there again.

Food was way below expectations... kids meal came and was overcooked (dry) and our mains come and the chicken was BONE dry and again, had to send back - wasn't busy so no reason for this to happen. If you cant cook something this simple then your In the wrong job (whoever cooked). The food that was replaced was OK but shouldnt have to do this in the First place! Some staff was great and helpful, others miserable and not very helpful - shame because this is a very nice place and has massive potential!! Won't be returning anytime soon!

A relaxing place for a quiet drink.

Manager and staff are horrendous. It’s only gotten worse over the years but now I won’t be coming back. I’ve been coming to this pub for the last 9 years. Every Friday after work I come down with 3 lads only to be greeted by someone who passes as a miserable slapped horse. The manager is a whole other story of absolutely degenerate. He came over after watching us for the whole duration we had the drinks until they were taken as soon as we’ve had the last sip, he started shouting at us whilst walking past to buy another one or leave, despite him eyeing us up the entire time we had our drinks! Seriously a disgrace and a shame. There’s loss anyways.

Stayed overnight in this grand and impressive looking hotel. Despite some of the reviews we found a friendly welcome and were quickly shown to our room. This was a good size and clean but the paintwork could do with a bit of a freshen up as could the corridor outside. After settling in we popped downstairs for a decent pint from the extensive selection at the bar. Food looked good but we were already dining out. However if breakfast was available we would have booked for that instead we had to go off and find somewhere in the morning. An opportunity missed perhaps? Overall we had a good stay and would use again if in the area.

On our 5th visit today but it will be our last. Waited 40 minutes for our food to be told by a barman that we'd only ordered 10minutes ago! Waitress came and said it was just being plated up. 10 minutes later it arrived. The curry was good, the cheese & onion pie had obviously been warmed up in the microwave and was almost inedible. Disgusting.

We were a party of 10 that didn't have to wait too long for the food as the eating area was busy.I had a sirloin steak, which was a bit chewy, to be honest. I had sticky toffee for pudding, which was great.Nice atmosphere priced much the same as many other pubs, will go back again.

A lovely old pub with a welcoming staff. We had the Sunday roast (there's a vege option) and it was excellent! The staff really are top notch! Well worth a visit.

Fabulous place. Good food and great staff. Only niggle is that non alcoholic beer should be available on all meal deals.

It’s a shame as the food is decent and a nice atmosphere - the pubs policies and management let it down - strict rules on kids and food serving times - been here a few times and had to leave to go elsewhere because of senseless policies

Sadly, they no longer do a carvery. Really miss that. The food is ok, not brilliant, but decent value. Good beer as always in a Holts pub.
