The Wok Inn in Northampton

Disappointing and not value for money. Had a carry out for 2 and we both ordered our usual but this was the first time we'd used the Wok Inn. My Kung Po chicken was so spicy and greasy I couldn't eat it and I love spicy food. The noodles and egg fried rice were the only eatable thing in the meal that cost nearly £40. Wont go back.

This place used to be pretty good...we've been eating there for years - but its really gone down hill of recent - you can guess how the food is made by just how quickly they can deliver, its lightening quick - there's nothing wok fried about anything, its limp, wettish, anemic....chicken like rubber, fried rice like boiled rice... the whole lot just went straight in the bin. We'll never eat there again, had hoped they'd raised their game a bit, sadly not.

Lovely meal but in a very cold restaurant. Note: the egg fried rice is actually rice with scrambled egg in it 🤮

Having heard of the reputation of this eatery for years, it was a must to try. We were not disappointed. Delicious starters, although we ordered too many and got full rather quickly. Pancakes were lovely, especially the veg option but he duck looked yummy too. Mains, only criticism here was the veg Singapore noodles were way too spicy. Fish in sweet and sour sauce was the best dish. Lovely staff and would definitely come again.

Our usual takeaway was closed so we had to find somewhere else. This had mainly good reviews so we gave it a try. My son enjoyed his satay chicken but my wife and I were both disappointed with our meals. Very poor compared to other Chinese restaurants we've tried. Our meal for 3 was also £4 more than our usual, for the same food. I'm afraid we won't be returning.

Aggressively efficient! We went to The Wok Inn last night for a celebration with friends. From the moment we stepped through the door we found, what I assume is the manager or owner, to be very abrasive with his attitude. Rather than being friendly, smiling and welcoming, we found him bolshie, abrupt, and quite rude. We ordered our drinks. Some of us having wine had the option of just a small glass or a large glass, a medium glass of wine was not an option!!!! We were told that we couldn’t have any more than two menus between the five of us and that we didn’t need to look at the main courses, until he told us we could. We had asked if we could hold onto the menus, but were told that we ‘didn’t need them’ and that other diners needed them. (well print more then!) Considering it was ‘eat as much as you like’ at a cost of £24.95 pp, when we asked for our starters of choice, he TOLD us, in no uncertain terms, basically whether we wanted them or not, that we would have a little of everything. We weren’t given the choice. He did, however, ask if there was any allergies, which was good as I suffer with a nut allergy. When the starters came, they were a lot smaller dishes than served in the past. They were good in part but the food was very heavily salted. One mouthful would be fine and then the next you’d find was too salty. Basically a heart attack waiting to happen. There was a tiny amount of crispy seaweed, however, when we asked a lovely waitress for some more, she was smiley helpful, and soon brought some more. I must say at this point that the rest of the staff were good . They were much more helpful and friendly. Also, They didn’t keep asking us if we wanted more drinks which is a positive as we have found this a problem at this restaurant in the past. We were then asked what main courses we would like . When he came round to me, I asked the ‘bolshie manager’ if I could have a some of the butterfly prawns from the starter menu, as I hadn’t seen any on the starter platter. He said there were some on the plate and then ignored me and went on to the next person to get their main course. He only redirected his attention back to me when our friend asked if I would like the prawns. Once he’d got one dish order from all of us, he tried to walk away. We asked him for a couple of extra things to add. He then announced to the whole table that we all wanted egg fried rice, but he didn’t ask in an Enquiring way but with more of an authoritative tone, almost telling us that’s what we wanted, so another friend corrected him, and said told him no, and said we wanted both boiled rice, egg fried rice and vermicelli, as three of us wanted something different. When the main courses did arrive, they were ok but weren’t the best. We found the lemon chicken dry. While spicy, the vermicelli was flavourless and this was similar with the other dishes. So to sum up our experience, The ‘main man’ we found to be aggressively efficient shall we say! The food was okay, but not the best, but the rest of the staff were nice, and especially the female waiting staff very friendly and smiley. The restaurant was busy, ambience was ok, but not an experience we plan to repeat any time soon, especially for a special occasion!!!! We were all in agreement about our experience at The Wok Inn. We were so busy reeling at his lack of customer service that I forgot to take photographs of the food. Sorry to leave such a negative review. I really do prefer to leave positive feedback. NOTE TO MANAGEMENT…. You are there for the customer, NOT the customer there for you!

Really friendly and took concerns over allergens seriously when taking our order. It was a Tuesday night so very quiet which is fine but a very likable place to eat. Price was really really good and worth every penny. My only observation is it could do with a slight makeover. I am also glad I never chose a fish item as Nemo in the fish tank next to me was staring straight at me :)

I LOVED IT! Real good food and nice atmosphere. I'd recommend this place over other Chinese restaurants in town.

First visit to The Wok Inn despite living in Northampton for decades, what we've missed! Food was excellent, staff friendly and attentive, will definitely be back. The mixed starters sharing course was amazing. (family of 4 adults, 2 children)

The staff were fantastic, they called me 2 hours prior to our meal to advise me the card machine wasn't working properly. When we arrived the staff were very attentive and polite. Our drinks order arrived promptly and they were relaxed about the late arrival of one. The food was delicious, the only fownside was there was so much food!! Will definitely return in the new year as I have a longish journey. I will recommend this place to all my friends.

We were so disappointed with this takeaway. After booking it over 2 hours in advance, the delivery was still late, everything was cold, the chips were in a wet paper bag that had fallen apart so the chips had gone everywhere. The chicken was all chewy and the curry sauce was watery. After a few mouthfuls we just threw it all in the bin as quite frankly it was inedible, and I can tell you now, it takes a lot for me to throw food away, I usually plough on through even if it’s not the best. Complete waste of £26 and it ruined our evening.

The buffet is very good value for money!! The restaurants is well decorated and the staff are friendly. We ordered 4 starters and 4 mains for £22 each and were very full by the end!!

The curry didn’t even taste like curry and the rice was disgusting it tasted like everything had been cooked separately the only nice thing in there was the ribs

We ordered a take away from the wok in and was blown away! The food was piping hot on arrival, freshly cooked and were quality & fresh ingredients! The flavours are amazing and it’s great value for money. This is the best Chinese takeaway/restaurant in Northampton! I highly recommend this place - You won’t be disappointed!

Kids loved the endless duck and pancakes! The food was excellent. We thought drinks selection good too and service efficient.

Everyone raves about this place but unfortunately it's gone downhill. I was in a party of 4 and one of us was not a huge eater. So instead of having eat as much as you like we asked if she could choose one meal off the a la carte. Was told unless we all had the same menu this couldn't be facilitated.... so that was restrictive. It was eat as much as you like... or nothing.I didn't feel there was much choice from the menu since it was eat as much as you like and the starters were overcooked and hard. Sometimes we hadn't even finished before plates were being taken and asked what we wanted next. I felt rushed and under pressure. Overall the food was mediocre and the atmosphere was not at all relaxed for me. The place was busy and extremely loud and as so many tables packed in together it was hard to hear my own party speak. It's not like it used to be and the food has definitely gone downhill. If you want impeccable food and service check out my other review of another restaurant and go there. You will not be disappointed.

We went years ago and it wasn't a good experience. Recently we noticed the sign outside had been fixed (some letters were missing) and we thought maybe it was a new management so we decided to go. The inside decor is still the same, stuck in the 80's. There was only one other couple and three very sad members of staff. No music to start with then they played some music but it was like it was coming from someone 's mobile. The price for the "eat as much as you like" is 18 which is the highest I have come across ever. The list of starters is basic, few vegetable ones, and then 2 chicken ones, pork ribs and prawns. Very, very, basic choice and incredibly average food. We had prawns that were the size of shrimps and literally 2 each, ribs chewy covered with a sauce that could have been from a jar, crispy duck was ok but the cucumber was soggy. The crispy beef was fried to the point that there was no flavour left. The sweet and sour pork again looked and tasted like the one you would make with a cheap shop bought sauce. Absolutely not worth half of the money we paid. Sad place, sad people sad food.

Ordered a takeaway from here today as had previously had fantastic food. Today, received my order and the crispy Aramatic duck was virtually pink with no crispness whatsoever. Also the chicken chow mien was burnt with lots of black bits and the whole thing just tasted disgusting. Did contact them afterwards to express my disappointment but was just told that the duck is only crispy on the outside!! I know that but as I explained it wasn’t crispy anywhere!.

Have just returned from the Wok Inn and I hardly ever leave reviews but feel so strongly that I have to tonight . Arrived at 9 pm and shown to table , drinks and starter orders taken quickly which were fine followed by duck second course . All went down hill from there !! Only 9.45 pm and the staff are cleaning the floor around us for the next day , sweeping and almost like we needed to lift our feet up to get under the table whilst we are trying to enjoy our food ! Main courses arrived and the meat is like shoe leather in each of our lamb and beef dishes , awful quality ! We ate some and then paid our bill !! Expensive for what we had and poor quality mains ! The manager was standing waiting to clear our table even though it was only around 10.15 pm and we asked why as it made us feel uncomfortable . He was extremely hostile towards us and we mentioned about the floor cleaning and tables being laid around us and he merely shrugged his shoulders and walked off ! The staff were obviously following instructions and apologised to us as we left . Over all a terrible evening ruined by poor main courses and bad attitudes from management ! Weill not return and will tell others not too either !!

I have loved the Mandarin restaurant for years and was excited to try it.

Buffet menu with order from menu style but minimum two people. Servers try to push too many starters on you. Some staff unsure what menu items were. Not the greatest range of starters mostly very typical range seen in generic takeaways.

Always come here for a sit down Chinese meal and have never been disappointed. There is always an abundance of freshly cooked food. The starters are exceptionally good. Service always warm friendly and efficient.

I phoned up to enquire about this restaurants policies surrounding the dine app, whether or not the 50% applied which was shown on the app I was still going to go forward with ordering with the wok inn. I was answered by a very abrupt man who seemed as if he was eager to get me off the phone as soon as he had answered! He rudely told me it was clear on the website which clearly it was not hence why I rang up. I then aimed to move onto a different topic about ordering with them and finding their menu online which he insisted was easy to find and gave me no help nor guidance to help us pursue finding this. Therefore, due to this gentlemen’s poor attitude and rudeness towards us as customers I do not recommend this food facility.

went in at about 6.30 Saturday night and it was very busy - service was brilliant and plenty to choose from - will definitely be back - 3 course meal eat as much as you liek for £17.60 per head

From walking in to walking out ,,it was amazing value. What I loved about this place was,, it reminded me of my first experience eating Chinese food. The staff and management were first class but also was the food . All the dishes we had were so tasteful and would recommend the Singapore noodles. Will so look forward to another visit. Great value for the money.

The hype of this restaurant preceded the experience. My husband and I decided to try this much lauded restaurant. The interior was pleasant and the staff were very attentive. We sat near the window and the chairs were extremely uncomfortable to such a point that my husband had to go outside for a walk (easy fix). The highlights of the meal were the prawn toast (best I ever had) and both the szechuan prawns & mongolian beef were very good. However, the remainder of the meal was of adequate quality. This is an establishment that we will not frequent simply because we have had superior food for less than we paid last evening. It’s okay but do not believe the hype.

The best Chinese food we have had! The choice is awesome you can literally order everything on the menu if you wanted too all for a set price!! Really good value for money! I would recommend booking a table especially at the weekend because it gets really busy which speaks for itself!!

We arrived just before 10 pm on a Friday evening, without a booking. Although the restaurant was crowded, we were welcomed in and shown to our table.

Tried going in on a Saturday night, they had loads of spare tables but we were turned away. Sadly could see spare tables, so went elsewhere. On the way back walking past, those same spare tables were empty so think they couldn’t be bothered.

My wife and I went thought we'd go out for a meal as hadn't been out 8n a while. The food was ok, but the staff weren't the best, when the food came out we were expected to make space on the table, which is fair enough to help out I suppose, however the staff weren't the friendliest of people for a restaurant.

Friends and I have been going here for our Christmas night out for several years. The menu is huge, and they do a set meal price where you can order as much as you like which is around £20 depending on weekday/weekend pricing.

The best Chinese for miles consistently good food friendly service,have tried every Chinese in Northampton,and many more in surrounding towns.and I must say none are as good as The Wok Inn. Very friendly and very consistent .

This is a much loved restaurant of mine, could not fault a thing, even my friends were impressed. Came in with 8 of my friends and had the ‘eat as much as you like’ menu option, the starters were amazing!! My favorite was the satay chicken on skewers, but off course everything else on that starter was good too! We had the duck as the second and when choosing for our mains, we were more than happy to let the staff choose for us. They were very polite and attentive even while we girls were doing catch-up talking!! Would highly recommend it!!

Worst thing of all was the staff. They were so rude to us on many occasions. We asked 5 times for water for the table but never got it. When ordering mains the guy said you've ordered enough yet when it came out there were 13 tiny dishes for 16 people, each dish maybe having 5-6 pieces of meat so not even half of the table got a bit of each dish. We did order more but it wasn't any better. When we were totaling up the money one of them was literally standing right over my girlfriends shoulder practically taking the money out of her hand. Once the money was handed over they were practically throwing us out, with two waiters rolling up the table cloths even with our coats and handbags still on it! When we got annoyed about it and said something they just said "what do you want us to do? We have a table waiting". Sorry but it is not our fault they booked tables in too close to each other.

Buffet meal - starter just a platter of deep fat fried nibbles - very poor - food comes instantly! Wine expensive and main meals nothing special - won't be going again - the buffet is far too expensive for what it is

Just a little Chinese restaurant tucked away in Newcastle city centre. It’s nothing special but has lovely attentive and welcoming staff. Food was fine, nothing to complain about. Not expensive either.

Six of us went for a leaving do. The food was excellent. I would have given 6 stars had the chairs been higher. The chairs were too low for the chair, making us all stretch for food as we couldn't reach it. The atmosphere in the Restaurant was great too., although we were only allocated 2 hours for our meal. We were confused over the bill as we all thought it was £20 per head, excluding drinks, eat what you want, turned out not to be the case, as a service charge of 10% was included in the bill. This should have been an optional extra and made clear on the bill instead of being included. Just as well we had the money on us !!! We still had a great evening.

Good food and very good value - imagine a good takeaway but served freshly. It’s not a relaxed vibe or proposal venue - but for a quick non fussy variety feed you won’t go wrong!

Had dinner here this evening with my mum for her Birthday. Service was not great & certainly not delivered with a smile. Food was very average & portion sizes too big in the eat as much as you like menu-they do not allow you to take any leftover food home with is such a waste as it ends up in the bin.

Went in with my gf and daughter to receive a warm friendly welcome in a nice quiet restraunt the service was great really friendly and attentive especially with are daughter and the food was superb really like this place think it's one of the gems this town has to offer will definitely return soon

Ordered here for the first time, food was stone cold and dry when I rang to ask the to redo our order he was unapologetic didn’t want to redo our order and told us to send the food back for a refund. We had waited 45 mins and were all very hungry so we had to microwave it but was completely uneatable. Will never eat here again or recommend it to anyone! Very poor food and service.

Had a great meal at Wok Inn, it’s our regular for restaurant Chinese. Service can vary at times, tone can be quite sharpish but the food is good quality.

Ordered takeaway last night. Food again was dry and was obviously frozen and recoooked. Staff on the phone were not apologetic. Not the same since new owners a few years back. New owners do not deserve to hold the woks name to theirs! A disappointment.

We came here after visiting whipsnade zoo, we’ve been a few times.

The concept of all you can eat but cooked on order is great as the food is always piping hot. The starter platter was amazing, the duck really flavoursome and our mains and sides outstanding. The only downside was that we were full after a main and side each but would have loved to try some more food!!! (Next time!) The Kung Pao chicken was particularly excellent.

I come here quite often, the food is pretty good and quite good value for money. £14.80 eat as much as you like. BUT and it’s a big ‘but’ the stinger comes in with the drinks, they are extortionate. There were 3 of us, food bill = £44.40. Then for 2 soda and limes, 1 small glass of rose and soda, 1 half pint tap lager, and I alcopop type drink, the bill came in to over £90 in total. More than half of the bill cost associated to drinks and not even what should be expensive drinks. This does include a 10% service charge which they add themselves. Absolutely disgusted with it though. Won’t be going back. I have always previously been in a big group, so have never before noticed the proportion of the bill food to drinks before, but this time, because we really didn’t have much in the way of drinks it was hugely apparent. As I said won’t be going back. It’s just pure greed when everyone knows drinks are pretty much pure profit. And they are making up what they are not charging on the food on the drinks. Don’t be fooled by all you can eat for £14.80 not a cheap night out unless you’re prepared to drink tap water all night!

I went here as part of a team meal with people from work and found the food to be really good with good service and good value for money. All in all I had a really enjoyable time.

I’ve been coming here over the years and I can’t fault it. The food is delicious every time and it’s not badly priced either. The staff are always friendly and welcoming especially when we visited last with our kids (one being an 8 month old). They went out of their way to talk to the kids.

A large group of us visited The Wok Inn on a busy Friday night. The food was delicious and the service was 1st class. I highly recommend you eat here!!

We went with 3 other couples on a Sunday lunchtime. It was surprisingly empty with only one other table of 8 occupied. As this was our first time here we were a little worried when we arrived but one of our couples had been before. We were not disappointed at all. The food was lovely and cooked fresh. The only problem was that I ate far too much. It was eat as much as you like but not buffet so you just order what and as much as you like. Staff friendly and food was served quickly but that was probably because they were not busy.

I love this place. Starter is amazing and the menu varied. Food is always fresh. Some negative posters need to catch a grip.

This was a treat for my sons 15th Birthday . He has coeliac so eating out can be a bit of a mine field. They were great! Very knowledgable on which dishes contained gluten and were very happy to adjust dishes to make them gluten free. Lovely ribs, chicken satay was so tasty. We opted for the all you can eat menu at £14.80. All freshly cooked and piping hot. Highly recommend!

Went her with the girls on a Saturday night, all you can eat £16.80, choose starters and duck course, then they'll bring back menu for the main, then same for dessert. Food came out quickly, freshly cooked so nice and hot, mixed starter (sesame prawn toast, fried aubergine, ribs, satay chicken, seaweed and salted chicken pieces. Very friendly attentive staff, also was very busy so we always book for a Saturday night.

The service was efficient but not overly friendly as we were told when we booked for 6 pm that we would have to be out by 8pm in order to get more tables in. I can't complain though as we didn't feel rushed and as per previous experiences, I couldn't fault the quality and variety of the food. would always go back there for a good chinese meal.

As a family we thoroughly enjoyed the restaurant. With two vegans, a vegetarian and two meat eaters, it is often hard to cater for us all. But they had no trouble telling us what we could and could not eat and bringing us plenty of courses that were delicious. Would highly recommend.

We haven't visited the Wok Inn for a while so it was nice to be welcomed by familiar waiters and waitresses. We were shown straight to our table and all the food and drinks were efficiently and quickly brought to our table. As in the past, a great set menu of mixed starters, followed by crispy duck and pancakes and then a large variety of mains. Slightly disappointing that the menu is now just a folded plastic A4 sheet, but at £88 for 4 people with drinks, it can't really be beaten for quality and quantity.

The Wok Inn is a wonderful restaurant with pleasant decor and is especially good for lunch(£12.95 p.p.). the lunch menu at the Wok Inn has a vast range of dishes including vegetarian options. you can choose a soup/starter, two mains and a desert or tea/coffee to finish. Incredible value in my opinion.

We loved the Wok Inn, due to the consistency of the food standards, and as a result our family has dined there for many years.

I regularly visit the wok inn and have never had a bad meal, the food is always very fresh and tasty. You can have all you can eat menu or the normal menu, we always have the all you can eat and then you can try stuff that you wouldn’t normally, every single thing that we have tried has been tasty. The shredded beef is excellent as is the crispy duck and the sharing platter to start. Very good value for money.

I visited with friends in Oct 17. Despite this being a main stay of the Northampton restaurant scene for as long as I can remember, I had never visited as I am not a huge fan of Chinese food. Despite this, I was happy to go along as part of a group as the menu was all you can eat and the price was really reasonable.

Customer service was awful and the food wasn't that great either will give this place a wide berth never ever go here again

10 of us booked and went for food. We really did eat all we could. The food was amazing and the staff were so friendly and was more than happy to keep brining us more food. Would highly recommend.

We went on a Saturday evening. The staff were quite rude. Even though it was all you can eat the waiter kept taking our menu away making it very awkward for us and made us feel uncomfortable. We only ordered 2 things between the two of us for a starter and the same for the main along with a portion of noodles & we had to keep asking for the menu so gave up. The food was nice but will probably go elsewhere next time

Went to the Wok Inn for my wife's birthday having read very good reviews. Phoned during afternoon for an early sitting and was told it can get busy. What an understatement, by the time we left it was heaving with both small and large parties, however this didn't stop the staff being attentive and available as it often does very pleasing.Had the mixed starters followed by duck and pancakes, superb and plentiful. We had three mains and rice between two of us which we were advised would probably be enough, although we ordered two types of rice but only got the special fried rice in a smaller bowl but my wife said it would be enough.We obviously could have asked for more rice or anything else but we felt we had had enough and the dishes were all superbly cooked and tasted delicious.We are so pleased we have a top class Chinese restaurant in the Northampton area and will definitely be going again.Many people seem to be annoyed at the 10% SC levy which is outdated in most places but it is clearly stated in the menu that this will be applied so I have no problem with that, just over £16 pph for all you can eat of top class Chinese food; magic!!

actually the food is very good but despite being being frequent visitors to this restaurant we found the attitude of one of the waitresses towards us as basically unfriendly... bordering on hostile despite the fact that there was hardly anyone else inn the restaurant ...this spoiled the experience for us ....as a result we will not be going again
