Food really good. Dining area good enough, if a bit noisy. Echoey. I wasn't really impressed with the gratuity being added to the bill. Obviously very few people are likely to say please remove it. Does it go to the staff? I'm not saying it doesn't, I'm just saying not all restaurants pass the gratuities on to the staff. Even in the US, tip capital of the world, you're given the option to add it or not. As I said though, the food was fantastic. As was the service.

It’s the highlight along the Middlewood Way. The vegetarian pie and fish-n-chips are carefully prepared with excellent sauces and side vegetables, and most importantly, served on a heated plate. I can’t drink as we drove, otherwise it would be a perfect afternoon with spring sunlight spread around the cozy pub after a nice walk along the country side. We loved to revisit it again.

Updating as a group of us revised on New years day. Compared to our visit 2 years earlier the food was not at the same standard. 2 people ordered Duck on Toast which neither ate (it looked like a cross between playdoh and clay and tasted as bad apparently) The burger 3 people ordered was bland and dry and the roast dinner was dry and over cooked. Very disappointed as our previous visit had been far better.

2 stars at best. Disappointing service and quality. We were sent the wrong drinks to the table, and despite being told that children's drinks weren’t available, we later received juice cartons with the children's meals (meaning we had to pay for 2 drinks each) . The bread on the children's sandwiches was stale, and the chips served with the meal were like warm and unappetizing. To top it off, a 10% service charge was automatically added to the bill, which felt very uncomfortable given the poor quality of the meal. £65 for lunch for two adults and two small children is outrageous for what we received. Shame considering they food used to be very good.

I visited The Windmill with my Grandchildren for Sunday Lunch. A great selection of Ales from stouts to IPA’s and friendly service at the bar. I personally had the special Roast Turkey which was especially good, full of flavour and not one bit dry. We finished our meal with a selection of homemade desserts, which were proper pub classics, with a brownie and crumble. 10/10 would visit again.

Great location, within walking distance. The staff are all very welcoming and attentive. The beer is also very good. But, the food is not good. I had the Sunday roast, the parsnip and carrot were nice enough, however the sirloin beef was not edible nor were the roast potatoes, both seemed to be overcooked, possibly reheated. This is the third time we have eaten here and I thought we were just unlucky previously. Not the case. £21 for a Sunday roast is a lot to pay, we came home and ate a full meal! We were a party of six, the others thought their meals were adequate.

We went for dinner with 2 other couples on 8 November. The only meal I could eat was Fish and Chips as the veggie option did not state the ingredients. The fish arrived on a plate of chips which kept falling on to the table as the plate was loaded with chips. The fish was in a very greasy batter which was not edible. My partner ordered a fillet steak which amazingly was exactly the same round and size of the other 2 fillets which had been ordered. The total bill was £81.00 for a fillet at £35.00 and fish which was £17.00 plus a glass of cider. So the cider was £ 29.00 per glass!

My partner and K went last night for dinner. We arrived and sat in the garden area. I headed inside to order some drinks and ask for the food menus. I was given a garden menu and a burger night special menu. The garden menu contained about 5 items, of which 2 were also burgers. I was told I needed to book a time slot to order my food. Quite unused and the first time I have ever been given a window to order my food. I ordered 2 burgers and as I was about to pay I told there was a 10% service charge. Which is fine, but in the next breath I was told that I needed to collect my own knives and forks and condiments. I joked about the services charge I had paid 10 seconds earlier and was told “we do bring the food to you”. At which point I felt like saying give me a shout when it’s ready and I’ll come and collect it from the kitchen! The food arrived and the chicken burger was bland with a bit of tomato sauce on top. The beef burger also wasn’t the best. £70 for 2 burger, 2 pints and 2 medium wines. Overall a poor experience of service, food quality and menu options. I won’t rush back.

The service is very friendly, timings are good and I really like the fact that this pub invests in supporting local musicians. We had a great Valentine’s meal here with a fab duo called Marsh Parade. They also have a variety of events on each month that entice you to visit. The cask ales are great, really well kept and constantly changing. Booked a table over the telephone for a 50th Birthday get together so we could have a catch up and good conversation over dinner, however when we arrived there was a live act on, which I was not informed about when placing the booking. On advising the staff that I felt I should have been informed of this when making the booking, I was told that it was ‘well advertised’. An apology was made and when requested during the bands break if they could turn it down a notch (you seriously couldn’t hear yourself think, let alone what anyone was saying) they obliged and did do just that. The evening was somewhat tainted as we were not able to have the conversation that we wished to over dinner without shouting at one another, which proved very difficult for my 89 year old father who is very hard of hearing. He had to remove his hearing aids for fear of rupturing an eardrum with the amplification of sound he must have been hearing. I’d strongly advise to inform guests of live acts on making the booking, even if it has been advertised. If I’d have known I would have booked elsewhere. On that note, the food was great although would have been enjoyed more if we were in a more relaxing atmosphere with music in the background 😋

The meals aren't cheap but the quality was pretty good so no complaints there. However, they take the micky with the price of drinks. £12.50 for a large glass of house wine ! But that does include the 10% service charge they put on everything. They even added 10% to the drinks we ordered and collected at the bar ! Oh, yes, and it's £1 for a dash of lime in a half of lager. I really dislike this automatic service charge. The staff must be making a fortune as there were very few on duty the night we were there. We spent £200 (4 of us) so a £20 tip just from us. We'll not go again.

This pub has always been one of my favourites in town, it is a beautiful building, has some really great staff and great ale choices. However it appears that now I have a child, my time in the pub will have to be limited. I understand a policy of 'no children after 9pm' etc but I didn't realise the pub had a complete ban on under 12s. It is a quiet Sunday afternoon, the lovely courtyard was empty and we had just enjoyed a walk with our six week year old who was fast asleep in his pram. Knowing they have a courtyard hatch, we thought we would have a quick quiet pint on a Sunday afternoon. Sadly the manager had to inform us that children are not allowed. If I'm being pedantic it says on the sign on the door 'No children inside under 12', I didn't realise that would also include the empty courtyard. I do to an extent understand kids running riot unaccompanied but I also believe that the Black Lion is not that type of pub to attract unruly children's families. Businesses need all the support they can get currently, so I find it odd they would enforce such a rule on a quiet Sunday. Thankfully the Crown didn't have such a rule and is also a beautiful old pub with good ale. Please reconsider this rule during the daytime's when it is quiet 👍 Edit: To follow up the response, I note that signage has been updated to specify inside and outside, but this took place after my original review so clearly feedback was taken on board.

My wife and myself were walking the Gritstone Trail and found The Ryles Arms to be perfectly placed roughly around the halfway point. So, we booked for a night and have to say, it was great. The accommodation was ideal and the bar and restaurant were really good. But, the best thing about the stay were the team - everyone was so friendly and really went above and beyond to offer a professional and friendly service. Genuinely, we couldn’t fault them. They were also really accommodating with our plant-based / vegan diet and helped so much with our evening meal and breakfast. And, even provided oat milk for our room. A little touch that nearly everywhere else seems to overlook. Thank you to everyone involved.

We just returned from a one night stay at the Black Swan. It is a beautiful restaurant and the rooms are very cosy. We were on their Hunker Down package which included early check in at 1430 (normal check in is 1630), a half bottle of champagne and a therapy kit with bath salts / body moisturiser and body scrubber. Our meal was delicious and it was impressive how many of the ingredients were grown in the kitchen garden or sourced sustainably and locally. The staff were all friendly and knowledgeable and put us at ease. It was the right amount of courses and we were well fed by the end of the dinner. The breakfast in the morning was also delicious with home made juices, yoghurts , toast, pastries and a full English. It is not cheap but I think the quality is certainly worth the price. My only one gripe (and it is small) is that I do not think the scallop course should have been an upsell of £25pp. I think that should have been included. Cheese courses I don't mind as up sells because not everyone likes them but that was the only one thing that I did not like about it and it has been mentioned in previous reviews. We would return.

We had a large fish (pollock) and a standard portion of chips. The price was £9.70. The serving was HUGE and there was easily enough for both of us. Perfectly cooked, very tasty and not at all greasy. An excellent traditional chippy.
