Since my last visit to The Windmill in 2018 a refurbishment would seem to have taken place. First impressions a little more upmarket than your average pub , the dining area very well laid out with a nice ambiance as well as being fairly spacious . The large windows allowing a panoramic view over the Bristol Channel . For our lunch we ordered the Beer battered Haddock with chips as well as the Beefburger and chips . Whilst the Haddock passed the taste test I have to say I was disappointed with the Beefburger . Service was good , toilets good and no problems parking . Overall we enjoyed the experience .

Went in for a family lunch. We felt it was really over priced for the quality of the food. We got olives to start while we decided what to have and was disappointed at being given a small bowl containing only kalamanta olives….no green or black. The mac n cheese was mushy and tasteless. The rest of the food ordered was very average but cost a lot for pub food..just expected much better in such a lovely location. The staff were polite, just disappointed with the food. Nice beers though.

Love this pub, especially being near the water. It was dark, but during the daytime, the view must be incredible. The faggots were delicious. They have Pride on draught as well. Joe, the waiter was very polite and most attentive. Definitely recommend.

The lack of cars outside on a Friday lunchtime said it all. For years, The Windmill has had a solid reputation for its decent, in not exceptional, food and an unsurpassed panoramic view of the Bristol Channel. It's a place for families and a go-to lunchtine destination for Portishead's many pensioners. This visit felt quite different from usual. At 12.30 it was almost deserted, and by 1.30 was hardly much fuller. We soon found out why. After being seated at a window table (nice), we waited almost half an hour for our drinks order to be taken. The food service was quicker - about 20 minutes. I had soup, which tasted ok, but was tepid, and marinated prawns, which were fine. My mother's macaroni cheese, was hot on top and cold underneath. It came with carrots which were not just cold but actually chilled - straight out of the fridge. She abandoned her meal. We didn't bother with dessert and instead asked for the bill, which came within about 60 seconds. Yes, they were understaffed, but then they weren't exactly busy either. The staff were perfectly pleasant, but there was a general feeling of polite indifference. No one asked us whether we were happy with our meal or whether we needed anything. Consequently, and unusually, we didn't leave a tip. We felt bad about that, but in all conscience, we couldn't. Something has gone drastically wrong at The Windmill. It's always been something of an institution, but for whatever reason, it is now in a bad place. The lack of customers is a clear warning sign, and the management and owners need to wake up and act fast if they want to stay in business. Their core clientele appears to be deserting them, and, sadly, we have now joined them

Me and 3 pals went in the windmill for a few drinks one Thursday evening and found they no longer serve stans cider and to make it worse they never had any kind of dry cider we left without buying a drink and later informed our wife's & partners no more meals at the windmill because they don't sell cider.

Very disappointed not been for a few years definitely wont be back for dinner . Booked a table for a family birthday pre ordered . When arrived we was put on 2 separate tables which separated the party and didn't make us feel like we was together. The booker was told reason was there was a party of 30 coming in no party showed up whilst we was there. Air con not working so extremely hot when I asked if there was somewhere else for us to sit especially in the cooler middle section was told no we put bigger parties up stairs so can do table service . As we was ordering drinks from the bar ourselves to keep of the bill this did not effect us . As food was being taken out to other sections. More staff needed as service was slow at times on bar. Food came out in dribs and drabs over 10 minutes from 1st to last food brought out daughters burger was dry as it been left to last a good 5 minutes after all the other kids food she got anxious as thought they had forgotten her plus sauces was not offered till all food brought out kids were getting restless waiting for sauces. I ordered the chicken risotto big mistake risotto was crunchy but eatable the chicken was over cooked and was also very dry which I couldn't eat so sent back. I was offered replacement was told be 10 to 15 minutes but turned down as most of party finished food. Half the party had nearly finished food before all the food came out poor time management in kitchen. Others in the party found there burgers dry , the other risotto order was dry and the scampi was over cooked. Was a very disappointing meal for a few of us apart from those who had the fish and chips . The separate tables, no air-conditioning, food coming out dribs and drabs, short staff and dry food made it a very disappointing restaurant experience. We certainly won't be back to celebrate any special occasion as the kitchen was not able to time manage our order , not sat together, dry food. Very disappointing if only the standard matched the view

£8.50 for 8 ‘pieces’ of whitebait! Come on! Nice view but don’t take the p1ss! Infuriating. I know I’m spoilt being in Bristol in terms of value for high quality food but this kind of profiteering is cynical.

Wow, from the moment we arrived we were treated amazingly. We were greeted by Chelsey who was very happy and chirpy. Our little boy took to her straight away and she was exceptionally patient with him and his hyperactivity. We were seated straight away and had a fantastic view of the Bristol Channel on a sunny evening. Our server Cam was another amazing member of the team and again put up with our little boys hyperactivity with great humour. The food was competitively priced, presentation was lovely, was exceptionally tasty and good quality. A massive thank you to both Chelsey and Cam, they were amazing and are a credit to the restaurant. We will certainly be making our way back there in the near future and would highly recommend.

Very disappointing visit to the Windmill. We booked a last minute meal on a Sunday evening. There were plenty of tables free. New refurb is lovely with great views but service was poor on arrival. We stood for a good few minutes before the lady seating people acknowledged us at all. The table had a lovely view of the estuary. We ordered drinks straight away but they took 25 minutes to turn up! Our food order took considerably less time which was worrying. My husband had a roast which he couldn’t eat. Meat tasted like it had been warmed up and veg was slimy and covered in watery gravy. Veg was like mush. My burger arrived and was dry and so small served with a tiny portion of chips. My young son’s meal was bigger! Definitely not worth the astronomical price increases. Happy to pop in again for drinks but definitely won’t be eating here again which is a shame for such a lovely venue

We went for a late Sunday family Lunch, with high expectations, this was unfortunately not a good experience three of us had Roast Chicken dinner, which was 95% bones. No Cauliflower Cheese available was told it’s all gone !! Let alone it was part of the standard roast dinner. The veggies well if you could call it that was such a small amount and three tiny roast potatoes. Definitely left the pub with 4 hungry adults and felt very much robbed!!! Definitely won’t recommend or return.

There is no doubt that the venue itself after a refurb is great! But, it’s all style over substance! The food remains to be average, the service so slow that we watched people leave and the food is over priced for what is actually just generic pub food. We will not be returning.

Went with friends ordered the lighter bites fish chips 13.50 rather than standard at 17.50 . The standard looked reasonable size, ours was like a toddlers portion easily a quarter or smaller than the large , a few chips peas , the pot tartar sauce drowned it, the small pie was tiny with a spoonful of mash and greens. The rice pudding dessert was a very small dish. My friend had to buy a pkt crisps after as still felt very hungry despite spending over 20 pound. Unfortunately, we didn’t say about the portion size , wish we did! Between us spent over 100 pound and had to go home to eat! Wish I took a photo!

This restaurant has the most wonderful view over the Severn Estuary and the South Wales Coast. However, I'm afraid the food is low quality and the service is dreadful. I've visited there three times now and can honestly say the food and service is consistently poor, which is a great shame in view of the wonderful situation. We booked ahead so secured a window seat overlooking the Bristol channel which was very nice. Pub was very well presented with seasonal decoration's . Food arrived in good time and was pretty good to be fair, nice and hot and well presented. Just one gripe with the meal they forgot the wedge of lemon with my prawn cocktail. Bit pricey for what you get but we had a 25% discount voucher which eased the pain. Great pub in all fairness with lovely views and attentive staff. Might just go for a drink next time and try the very tempting bar snack's.

What a huge disappointment at The Windmill Inn, Portishead. My wifes meal of pork belly was very sparse indeed and half of the plate was covered with a huge lump of charred cabbage, raw including a massive stalk - inedible! No potato & one small carrot. My meal of beef lasagne was extremely small, lukewarm with an absence of beef, pasta sticky and no flavour at all. Meals were extremely over priced and we or our fellow diners will not be returning. This used to be such a nice place to visit, whatever has gone wrong. I suppose we should have realised there was a problem here as when we arrived at 6.30pm in mid December the place was virtually empty with only one table of 2 people in the lower floor, the same on the ground floor and only our table and 4 other ones being used in the upper floor. No atmosphere at all.

Sunny lunchtime meal . Table and views across the estuary can’t be faulted. Staff attentive, establishment clean and good one way system in operation. So far so good . I ordered Gammon and chips with an egg. Not fancy and generally a safe bet . When it arrived the gammon and egg were both over cooked in n faceted they looked as if they had been previously cooked and reheated ! My partners lasagne looked as if it was one layer of pasta with tomato sauce on it , not a inviting look and not how she it would be. Turned out to be tasteless. It appears very thought or care is taken in their food preparation. To add insult to injury the 20cl Prosecco are charged at £9.50 each totally excessive . Lovely location let down by poor and hefty alcohol prices . Wouldn’t recommend.

Only visit this pub if you have money to burn. £14 for a tiny piece of fried fish and a dozen chips, £5.70 for a pint of pale ale and £4.50 for a pint of Butcombe (which is one of the weakest cheapest beers you can buy).Nice views, but a complete rip off joint.

Good outdoor set-up, ordering & paying all done via your phone. Felt very covid safe. Food as good as ever, it remained hot which was great considering we were eating outdoors in April, and the view is definitely the highlight of outdoor dining. It’s just a shame they’re not allowed outdoor heaters. It was explained that due to their location being so exposed, there is a high chance of heaters being blown over. I won’t be returning until we can eat inside or the weather warms up!

Having been to the Windmill prior we were disappointed that our meals were bad.We started with pate, only 2 small pieces of toast. My wife had the Ragout which was mostly rice & very dry tasting.I had the Gammon, never have I had such hard & salty meat, the chips were what I would expect from a catering pack. The whole meal was lukewarm. My wife left half her meal & I left most of the meat on my plate.Food was overpriced for what we had,Never again

Have been here many times and always had a good experience this time I was very disappointed COVID is here and if business want to stay in business then the answer is great customer service staff need to know what is one the drinks menu as you can’t stand at the bar and see for yourself they also need to know what is on the food menu and more importantly if items have dairy gluten nuts etc the member of staff who served us had no clue got annoyed with us for asking as it meant he had to walk back to the bar to ask each time we had a question even simple ones like what gins do you have what cider do you have please make sure your staff know these answers not hard

I have rated this place well a number of times before, but unfortunately the quality of the menu and food itself has brought it down to a typical ‘chain’ pub eatery. Standard pub food menu with only 2 pasta ‘specials’ which were all above £10, closer to £15 each. Gone are the previous list of real specials and interesting dishes. An evening meal for 3 with only main course and a bottle of wine came to £75 - which is expensive for a basic pub meal. Therefore now it is really only the setting (and the London Pride) that makes it attractive.

Visited after a recommendation and the views certainly lived up to expectations. Later in the year there’s a lovely looking terrace for enjoying the sun too. Food was okay but a little more standard pub grub than the more has to pub expected. Would definitely be back again to enjoy food and drinks in the summer sun on the terrace

Have visited before and been impressed, unfortunately not today. Whilst the rest of the meal( a beef roast ) was good all our party were served with big slabs of uneatable gristly fat along side the beef. Waitress did not check if meal was ok and when told about the problem just shrugged and said I’ll tell the chef. Nothing less was said and no reduction made on our bill of nearly a £100 . Very disappointed and won’t bother again

After a demanding coastal path walk from Clevedon we had planned to stop off at the Windmill just for a refreshing drink. Not to be once we saw how fantastic the venue was we stayed for lunch which we walked off on our return journey! Even with Bio Security restrictions the staff made us so so welcome. We will be back in the Spring of 2021 if not before !

The place was spotless, well organised and fish and chips well cooked. Could not believe when we got the bill that a glass of wine was £9.65. The waitress who was brilliant apologised and said the it is fullers policy to charge London prices. Shame as it was a lovely lunch but just felt a bit conned!

Visited the windmill three weeks ago and have been back 3 times since so must be good. Food excellent and staff very welcoming considering the covid situation and all the extra work this involves. Well done to you all. Don Flowers

Today we visited the Windmill Inn, the pub itself is in a lovely location with stunning views out to sea. When we entered we were greated by a lovely gentlemen who showed us to our table. Outlining all the covid restrictions they have in place. The reason why I have given you a 2 star rating is that when ordered our food. My girlfriend is a vegan. She ordered a vegan burger and I ordered a beef burger. When our food arrived her burger had mayonnaise on the side which she ate, assuming that it was vegan as we were told it was a vegan meal. When we asked, the waiter said that the mayonnaise wasn't vegan. Now I think if your going to say you have vegan meals don't put non vegan condiments on the plate with a vegan burger. I spoke to the waiter who said he will tell the chef. All we had was a mediocre apology. This ruined our evening. I don't think we will return sadly, as the actual pub is stunning and in a great location. For future reference. YOU SHOULD STATE THAT YOUR VEGAN BURGER COMES WITH NON VEGAN MAYONNAISE.

Nine members of a Walking Group had a lunch at this lovely Pub, a warm welcome directed us to a large table where we relaxed after a walk in this lovely locality. It wasn’t quite warm enough to sit outside in the garden which has a breathtaking view over the Lake and hills. ( A summer visit will be organised.) The food was from a wide ranging menu but I was determined to try the Cow pie. Really tasty and served with lovely Mash and roasted vegetables, excellent meal and excellent value. Several other members had fish pie which I will sample on my next visit. All the Group agreed that the food and Service was exceptional.

I went to this delightful pub/restaurant in Portbury, Bristol, with a friend. Our lunch was delicious, freshly cooked, and very filling. It was quite quiet, we went on a Monday afternoon. The staff, in particular Andrea, were friendly, attentive and helpful. I would happily recommend it for a quiet, weekday lunch.

We arrived in the morning Senior citizen's trip. We were member of conservative club locally. My husband and I went there about early lunch, pressed to request could we enter no problem, we could have signed visitors book. The person there then very polite. Late before going back to our collection point we decided to return. we done this same thing but this time a man answered . Asked we were members explained on a visit and where from and we did not have docs on us but before we could say could we sign as visitors the conversation went not member's cannot be allowed in and put the intercom down. HOW RUDE. Would I return no and would I recommend no not if that person can not use some manners .

Great food and a lovely warm ambience . Staff were welcoming and friendly . You need to buy a car park ticket which is fully refunded before you leave .
