Absolutely excellent meal, The food was varied yet all of our choices were excellent. My mother doesn’t eat very large portions so they were happy to adapt her main course to suit her and she was so pleased not to waste anything. I wish we weren’t going home tomorrow as I would love to come again.

Had real high hopes for this restaurant but was let down by a poor meal. Serving staff were fine and the venue is ok too. I ordered the rump steak. It was pretty thin, overcooked and flavourless. Like cheap supermarket frying steak. Ironically the chips were undercooked slightly. Would have sent it back but we had waited a long time already. There’s an automatic 10% tip added which we obviously asked them to remove. It wasn’t a cheap meal and it wasn’t a good meal.

Visited for Sunday Lunch - Asked for a Bloody Mary - no tomato juice available! Duck spring roll quite good but slaw fairly pathetic ( far too course and completely undressed), bottled hoisin sauce. Roast beef very sinewy and very poor gravy. Veg OK but mange tout inedible due to not being de-stringed. Pork also very poor and no crackling or apple sauce. Chicken quite good. Appalling behaviour from a band of dogs constantly yapping and barking - love dogs but if they can’t behave they should be asked to leave! Popped in for a lunch last year and were very impressed , sorry but won’t be returning.

My wife and I had booked a table for our evening meal on Friday 13th. Was this unlucky, most certainly not. The service was very good and our meal excellent. I had the hake and king prawn Thai curry and my wife had the chicken dish. Both were cooked to perfection, full of flavour and delicious. We followed this up with the raspberry sorbet and the crepe suzette. Again scrumptious. While the meal was not cheap it was certainly value for money and I would throughly recommend The Whittling House restaurant to everyone. So get it booked if you are any where near Alnmouth and you will not be disappointed. We will definitely holiday in Northumberland again at some point and certainly pay a return visit.

Before going away on holiday to the area recently, we used Tripadvisor to help us choose our Sunday lunch booking. And we were certainly very pleased that we did! Apart from the food being absolutely scrumptious, all the staff were very welcoming and dog-friendly and we saw many people not able to eat as the lunch service was fully booked. Thank you to everyone. From Stanley (black Labrador) and his parents. x

We live locally and visit the Whittling House regularly. We always have a good experience as the food is excellent and the staff team without exception are professional, pleasant and friendly. Breakfast is exceptionally good value and the toast ( local soughdough) with a selection of preserves is highly recommended

A great restaurant with brilliant food and fantastic staff. We were in Alnmouth for a few days and had dinner on Sunday night at The Whittling House. Despite a very busy service, every member of staff was really friendly, professional and with just the right amount of attention. Special mention has to be made for Lucy who is just an absolute delight. She gave us great service, appropriately friendly & chatty. She would excel in any customer facing role for sure. All the food was fantastic. Between us we had the steak, seabass, risotto and venison pie, all cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious. Recommend highly. Obviously.

Staff all very friendly and informed. Knew the menu which is quite a welcome surprise! We just had starters, the cheese soufflé which came with a generous side salad. Definitely enough if you have a smaller appetite or have eaten a large lunch. My son had child’s scampi which was again generous and he loved it came with skinny fries. Quality of food was very good, and we eat out regularly so I’m certain of this. Wine was lovely, but very expensive; over £10 for a glass, a large one, granted, but ouch, that’s steep! Nevertheless we enjoyed it and I would recommend this restaurant for upmarket bistro meals, and a warm welcome. Our server in particular, who mentioned she was fairly new, was very attentive. Thank you ☺️

Having recently started with food allergies I am very cautious and nervous when eating out. We ate here tonight and the good was incredible. I had contacted them beforehand and dealt with Olivia & Rebecca who could not do enough to make sure everything was perfect. Rebecca was on hand as I walked in and made me feel very at ease. I even had dessert. Would highly recommend. We had been a few years previous before I started with food allergies and rated it 10/10 then and it’s still the same. Absolutely fantastic and all the staff are a credit to the place including the amazing chefs.

Had walked past here a number of times on previous visits, but this time our favourite pub was closed. Was very pleasantly surprised. Lovely atmosphere, well decorated and laid out building, accepting of dogs, and had a very good menu. The staff who served us and chatted to us were all outstanding and loved our Labrador puppy whose first pub it was! The food gave a good choice and service was prompt and food excellent. Will be back for an evening meal without dogs later in the year.

We went for a Sunday lunch and we both found it to be very poor for the money .The service was average and the food 2 star but the prices were certainly 4 star .We went recently for lunch to The Abbey Inn ( Tommy Banks place) 5 star food and less expensive than The Whittling House . Don’t rush ,you might be disappointed .They need a new chef ! Certainly recommend their sister place in Bamburgh , Potted Lobster, Fabulous and again less expensive .

Service was really good, but the food was disappointing. Two of our party had calamari and both said it was nicer in the The Sun Inn further up the road. I had the lamb dish and was expecting it to be pretty good at £30, but it was really tough. I didn't bother sending it back as everyone else was eating and I didn't want to eat alone. Another person had the venison pie and wasn't impressed with that either. It's a shame because it's a lovely place and the staff were great. Maybe we hit it on a bad day?

We made the effort to go becuase of the great reviews...Such a disappointment. Beer literally from the bottom of the barrel, we waited over 40 minutes for a pie, my main was burned and served with crackling from a packet. I said I wouldn't pay the service charge...they said they didn't want to know why, I told them anyway and was offered nothing. What a shame.

We received a warm welcome and spent a very enjoyable evening eating the excellent food served at The Whittling House. It's not fine dining, but the food is well cooked, tastes great and the portions are very generous.I would definitely recommend anyone staying in Alnmouth to try The Whittling House.

We visit Northumberland a few times a year and always enjoy popping into Whittling House for a drink or a snack. However this time we were staying in Alnmouth we decided to try both breakfast and dinner there (on the same day!). Couldn’t fault the food or the service. We were travelling with our baby boy and we felt so comfortable and welcome. Without a doubt we’ll be back!

We had wanted to visit the Whittling House for some time based on recommendations from friends. Visited with another couple and both of us had dogs with us. Welcome was extremely friendly and check in was super easy. Rooms were very comfortable with great bed / bedding / shower. If I could make a recommendation the lamp on the desk in front of the TV was huge and really unnecessary. We ate dinner on the first night and service was a little hit and miss but the waiters were lovely. Breakfast is fantastic and very good quality. On night two we asked to move the booking to 7:30pm and we were told the restaurant was full and could only fit us in at 7pm. When we went down we were given a table right by the door and it was very drafty. Asked the lovely waitress if we could move and there was a bit of back and forth and finally we were moved. The table we were given was much better with two dogs...and there were two empty tables next to us that nobody came to sit at. So how could it be full and we couldn't move to 7:30pm? We would love to visit again but there would have to be one change that could be so easy. This is a dog friendly hotel and as everyone knows the Northumbrian Coastal path is a big destination for walking. There were no facilities to wash walking boots / dogs at the back door and this meant our dogs were absolutely filthy in our rooms. I really couldn't see how this made sense a hotel that has spent a lot of money on a beautiful interior. I really would consider how you could put a small facility at the back of the hotel to help dog owners clean off their dogs and also clean off our walking shoes. Even somewhere that people could leave their dirty walking shoes to keep them off the carpet.

First time at The Whittling House - superb! We went for Sunday lunch. Somewhat formal but relaxed at the same time. You can even take your dog. Lovely roast dinner / staff were lovely. Have booked again for my birthday.

Staff were lovely and friendly and welcoming and it's dog friendly which was good for our little dachshund Margot🥰. We all had the fish and chips which was on offer. It was fine but no wow factor. We would come back and try again as we are locals and we'll try something different.

This hotel is a real find. Nestling in beautiful Alnmouth, the Whittling House hotel is so cosy and welcoming to their guests. We were celebrating a family birthday and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful and engaging. Our room was very comfortable with luxurious touches, well designed and spacious and even our Labrador was welcomed throughout the hotel. The food is delicious and the bar and dining room extremely cosy with wood burning stoves. We can’t wait to return. Thank you to all the staff that made our stay so lovely.

Warkworth has a small nucleus of great places to eat, and we'd never tried Bertrams, so we went. It was a no brainer given the quality of other reviews. The only downside was that we had to get in and out early so were nearly the first people in hence little "atmosphere" but that was our agenda not the restaurant, and we were there for the food... ... which was first class. Superb hake served with a beautiful herby crab pate and dauphinoise potatoes. The flavours were immense and everything was cooked to perfection. You notice the difference with real quality and top chef standards and this delivered for me. The lemon meringue dessert was the proverbial icing on the metaphorical cake. Superb.
