Nice clean tidy friendly atmosphere pub

We had fish & chips tonight and I can honestly say they were the best I've had in a long while. The fish was flaky, lily white and perfectly battered. "Real" chips, mushy peas and homemade tartar sauce were perfect accompliments as well as a pot of tea and bread and butter. All served piping hot. Nice atmosphere in the pub with everyone seeming to enjoy the food. Excellent !!!

We have been having Sunday lunch here a while now and I can say it is delicious. We've also tried other meals, fish and chips, steak pie, cornbeef pie, pizza amongst other things. All meals were lovely. Kids meals are good value for money too. My grandkids say they love the spag bol. Friendly and approachable team.

Sunday dinner is sublime, always consistent juicy beef & crispy roast potatoes. Manager Zak is a fantastic host & made our experience pleasurable. Also fantastic cheesecake options!

I recently visited the Whilehills pub in Chester-le-Street on a Sunday, and it was a disappointing experience. The place was nearly empty, which should have been a warning sign. Despite advertising sandwiches on their menu, they were out of bread—on a Sunday, of all days! It's baffling how a pub can be so poorly prepared, especially when the foot traffic is already low. The lack of atmosphere and basic supplies really made for an underwhelming visit. I won't be going back anytime soon.

Going from bad to worse, the pub hasn’t been great for years but now it’s terrible, Sundays are dead, drinks are overpriced for the area and a poor selection, too many lagers at £5 plus per pint. Food isn’t bad if you can get it but Sunday options are limited and staff don’t really care. Not knowing what is left available at 3pm, no bread buns for the sandwiches and poor choice for everything else. (Plain pizza / dry fish & chips ) Not what you expect or used to be, in 2024 most places still have a full menu available. I appreciate times are bad but the new team don’t seem to have a clue, hopefully some one will get the reins and make a success

Parents had BEEF burgers, they both said it had a smell and taste of fish. They were offered a new burger but no refund. They declined.....shame as this is the first time they have had a problem in there after many years

Had a sunday lunch recently with the family at this ph and it was very nice.We booked a table and ordered drinks at the bar when we arrived - cruzcampo on draught always a plus.We looked at the lunch menu and ordered four adult and one child sunday lunch at the bar.The food came after about 20 mins and looked lovely.The sunday lunch consisted of roast and mashed potatoes,mashed turnip,stuffing,meat and roasted parsnips.The veg which came in seperate bowls were broccoli,carrots and cabbage with two jugs of gravy.Friendly service,nice food and cold cruzcampo made for an enjoyable lunch.There is plenty of car parking available and there is a bar as well as a restaurant/lounge area with sky sports on the tv.We shall return.

We booked a table for Sunday lunch @ this ph.We ordered four adult meals and one child's meal and they all arrived together.The food was very nice with the yorkie and roast potatoes being the nicest.There was also mash,turnip,roast parsnips,carrots,broccoli,cabbage,stuffing,meat and two jugs of gravy.The service was friendly and you ordered food and drinks at the bar.Cruzcampo on draught is always a plus.There is lots of room for parking around the ph and the price of the roast is competitive with other similar establishments. We shall return at a later date and can highly recommend it for the roast dinner.

Been to whitehills 3 times since reopened and every time we have consistently had lovely food. The food is very well priced with fresh ingredients, a varied menue , staff are lovely, professional and welcoming. This a typical community pub with classic food . So glad we got this back xx

A true Pub in every sense of the word - not one of these fake establishments which serve mass produced food. The food was AMAZING - Good value, great portion size and excellent service. Good range of drinks available and a nice atmosphere. Beautiful hand cut chips, fresh burgers, and the lasagne was stunning! The Chicken 'porky' parmo was also massive and tasty.

I’ve been in this pub a couple of times and had a lunch or a dinner since being taken over they have introduced sandwiches too so I decided to try a sandwich. Helen ( member of staff ) recommended the hot beef and gravy sandwich I also chose hand cut chips with it It was absolutely tasty and great value for money. They have a good range of alcohol free drinks but I stuck with Pepsi as I was driving Both members of staff were busy but nothing was too much trouble Another great visit to this lovely pub

Just had a lunch at the Whitehills, the food was glorious!!! Excellent service, value for money too, I would highly recommend this place for friendly service, great atmosphere, perfect for all!!

Had a lovely meal with my husband and a friend. Our waitress Emily went out of her way to make sure everything was OK for us. Always had a smile on her face and never complained when I questioned a few things.

Pints are a bit pricey like but it's a nice place with beer garden on the crest of the hill so plenty of sunshine

Drink prices are not too bad, friendly enough atmosphere, just a shame they don't seem to look after their beers very well because I had several which did not taste great

It’s a nice pub with loads of potential the staff are second to none Very helpful and pleasant I popped in for lunch I opted for the 8oz sirloin steak with hand cut chips onion rings and mushrooms ( £17.95p ) which is the going rate really the steak was cooked the way I like it. ( Medium well ) the hand cut chips were lovely and made me think of my mams chips when I was a kid. As I was driving I couldn’t really drink so I had a inch’s cider ( good range of ciders ) they look like they have a good range of lagers they also do coffee and latte and alcohol free lagers Totally enjoyed my lunch hope to visit again

Sat in the conservatory as we had our dog with us. No other customers in there, but we could hardly hear each other speak as the music coming over the speakers was so loud. Very irritating. Won't be rushing back

Just started going to the pub quiz here, originally had a few friends together so we booked a table, had a couple others that decided last minute they were able to come and the staff were more than accommodating for our last minute request. Had a brilliant time at the quiz and loved the atmosphere. Food was tasty and it’s now become our weekly quiz spot at our lucky table.

went for food saturday, great service by a young girl and really helpful staff . stayed for the live music and it was a great atmosphere.

People have been asking me why I stopped going to the Whitehills quiz on a Wednesday. The answer is sad and simple after going to all the Wednesday quiz’s including the false start, and having the same table all the time, we arrived last Wednesday to find people sitting in our pre booked seats . We spoke to the manager and he told us that that table was no longer suitable for us and had been given to another party and offered us a table by the door with what could only be described as a lazy Susan in the middle and two high stools not suitable for a meal I asked for an alternative it was fully booked take it or leave it. My wife discovered that the people at the table we had booked (114) were actually booked onto two different table numbers (110/112), so why then were they seated at 113/114? We have been going to the Whitehills quiz for 30 years plus and have never been treated with such a disappointing, and couldn’t care less attitude. As a result, we have stopped going. Good luck to the quiz, but perhaps more training needed for the pub management. PS We messaged the management and they failed to reply make your own mind up.

Had fish and chips was soooo tasty! Big massive fresh homecooked chips, great service! Plenty of parking spaces, its a large pub can get busy at night at the wk ends

We called here for a meal and a pint, EXECLENT SERVICE lovely FOOD. We'll definitely be calling back again....

5 adult meals, 4 said it was OK and 1 said very good. All said the portions were generous. Staff friendly but could do with a face-lift, looking a little tired.

Had a fab night here with friends last Thursday 29th! Food was delicious, staff were very friendly and the atmosphere was relaxing. Definitely going back :)

We ate here on Friday afternoon. In the conservatory as we had my puppy with us. The food was lovely, and service was great! Special thanks to the head chef Darren, food was lovely and he gave my pup a carrot stick to keep him busy while we ate. Will definitely be back to try Sunday lunch.

A very recent visit and sorry but I'm not impressed. I know that it has new owners etc but sorry, its not a patch on those who've had it over the past few years when I've been. Each to their how they run it. Having over the years bought the small plates options - there's now not a great selection (and no offers on these now), and I honestly wouldn't recommend the brushetta - the bread was harder than concrete, on a plus the fries were nice, I wouldn't say the crispy garlic chicken was as advertised. Not a great selection on gins etc either. Staff very friendly enough but no interest in plates and glasses being cleared off the table and no excuse if it being busy... it was dead. Needs a lot more improvement. Being local you'd like to use it and frequent it as a local, but at present I'd rather get a taxi and travel a but further for better quality

Visited today for sunday lunch. Booked for six people dinner was excellent service quick and efficient. Only reservation we had was where our table was positioned was not suitable. Other than that i would certainly recommend the Whitehills for a visit.

Waited for over an hour to get our food when it came everything was realy over cooked (burned) the chicken paramo was deep fried dried up and burned manager not very good customer skills no refuned offered just what meals could we take away but we didn't have another hour to spare for food we will never return there again

Nice local pub with food but no good for real ale drinkers. I visited on 9th February 2024 the place was clean and tidy and I received a warm welcome from the member of staff that served me. However it was a great disappointment that despite having 5 hand pumps they were all empty of real ale. Sadly I went to Wetherspoons instead. I will give this place another try if they can get their act together by managing their availability of cask beers,

I’ve reviewed this beautiful pub a couple of times and now it’s under new management I wanted to give it a go I ordered the rump steak and chips I was a bit dubious about the price ( £18 ) but I can honestly say it’s one of the best steak meals I’ve have it was full of flavour and no gristle on the steak the peppercorn sauce was beautiful and everything was perfect temperature The staff were attentive and helpful and nothing was too much trouble A fantastic experience Will definitely visit again when in the area My ONLY criticism is turn the mushroom over because at first look I thought why have I got half a jacket potato on my plate Overall a fantastic experience

Was most disappointing meal I have ever have. I ordered the beef and ale pie. Beef was not beef as we know it, I sent it back as it was warm but nearer to cold when it came back it was exactly the same temperature and I realised why as the “beef” was not beef but some sort of of processed meat and chips were also disgusting I wouldn’t even describe them as chips. I wasn’t looking for a gourmet meal just some pub grub but shame on Whitehill pub you have not only let yourselves down but people will only try your food once and never come back for more. You need a new chef and also a genuine menu.

Used the pub before for evening meals, but this evening was really bad, if you like a bit of food with your salt, ideal, otherwise stock up on indigestion tabs, straight forward gammon, my mates was so so, my 1st plate was a lump of gristle, 2nd try ended up being left, solid fried egg, everything else left a puddle of grease on plate, onion rings looked and tasted like they had been lying in grease whilst rest was being cooked but there had been so much salt ground over you could hardly taste the food, certainly not either value for your money or a treat for the taste buds, won't be going back in a hurry folks, we didn't add salt at table

New management,,,Coffee and tea always cold , meal not very good , new staff need more training but they are very pleasant . Hope it gets better .

I’ve been to the whitehills a few times and always written a good review I believe in giving places a second chance so this isn’t a bad review but I hope they learn from mistakes the new management are making I had a mushroom in cheese sauce which was nice food portion was large for a starter then had a cheeseburger with bacon the burger didn’t really have any flavour and the bottom of the bun fell apart due to the fat coming out of the burger the prices have gone up a little but I’m looking forward to going back and trying something different next month

Great to see our local pub selling fresh home cooked food. We’ve eaten here a couple of times since it’s changed ownership and we’ve been really impressed. Minor point - would be extra great to see Prosecco being served again!

The pub has quite recently changed ownership and whilst previously it was somewhere clean and friendly it was not somewhere I would choose to eat in as it was chain frozen food. Now however it is still clean and friendly with beautiful freshly cooked food. The menu options are excellent with traditional favourites and more! I truly hope that this continues and that word spreads as it is a welcome addition to the area.

Very unprofessional never going back

New owners doing a great job. Lovely piping hot tasty food. Table service, chips especially good, not frozen muck. Kids portions massive, simple sausage chips and beans would suffice. Could do with a kids burger and chips maybe, and a steak knife. Early days but everything great.

A nice meal . It was a treat from my sister and brother in law. We had . Steak Chicken and lasagne. All were amazing. Well worth a visit .

Called in to give the Whitehills a trying. Great menu, fab service and the prices were reasonable too. We only had a snack. The home-made Natcho were top notch. Definitely be going on a regular basis. Well worth a visit.

I’ve been to this pub a couple of times now and it never disappoints The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and the the food is tasty and great value for money I was in there twice this week I had a chicken burger and chips one day and a cheese and bacon burger and chips another day The service was great and food was lovely Will be interesting on my next visit as one of the members of staff says they are changing hands Let’s hope they keep the great staff and the quality of the food

Love popping in here. Generally good music, great atmosphere. I'm often in when Carol and Helen are on the bar and they're always good fun to talk to between customers.

Went there for a meal to celebrate a relatives birthday. The food (vegetarian burger, chicken pie/array of vegetables etc) was nicely presented, the portions were VERY generous and the service was excellent. We'd been at a different location in Durham the previous day, paid twice as much and got half the amount. So highly recommended 👌

Had the Sunday roast dinner. Lots of meat with the 3 meat version. Veggies were roasties, mash, broccoli, cauliflower, parsnips and carrots. There was also gravy, Yorkshire and stuffing. All in All a good meal.

Countryside pub, geared up for screening sports events. Good pint of Carlsberg in here.

Good for at great value, pub is needing a deep clean. Tenancy is up for renewal so here's hoping new owner will improve standards
