The White Lion Inn in Eden

The pub has recently reopened so despite showing online as closed it is back in business. A nice spot in Patterdale, good quality food and service, recommended for a few drinks or a meal. We ate here twice recently, the prices are in line with other Lake Districe eateries and we enjoyed the food which was good quality and tasty.

Finding itself just a short hop from the YHA in Patterdale, this gem is a must visit on a weekend. Fantastic staff, really lovely people. Very friendly and generous. Great pint and the food was as hearty as required. A real beauty. Thank you to all the staff for making my friends 50th weekend truly memorable.

We went on Friday evening - only to find that the kitchen was shut. Not even residents were being offered simple meals. Luckily we had options in our van for an evening meal. We did eat there on Saturday evening. My scampi was Ok. My friends all ordered beef burger. Whilst they all enjoyed it - they all said that it was lamb - not beef. Luckily none of them had any issues with this - but it could have been a very different matter. The biggest issue on Saturday was that there was no draught beer or cider and no wine. This is a lovely little pub - however I will not be visiting again until it gets its act together.

Had a lovely meal. Good beer and friendly staff. We stayed overnight and found the accommodation to be great value. Will definitely stay again.

Great couple of days at the lion friendly and helpful staff, lovely atmosphere good food and a real fire. Will be visiting again soon.

Initially offered us three choices of main menu. This then dropped to two. Then magically the chef found more options. Then some sold out. There was three groups in the pub! On third attempt we ordered and waited forty five minutes for food. Food was ok There was no vinegar. No mayonnaise. No eggs because they were all hard boiled. They did give us extra chips but a couple were still frozen. The next night they only had one lager,fosters! After two pints of Wainwrights that ran out to. The substitute was undrinkable. God knows how long it had been there. The youth hostel was far far better for food. It also had Birra Moretti

I was organising a trip for a walking club. I e mailed the White Lion on 2 occasions in August and September requesting a booking for 12 on 27th September at 7pm. Alas despite offering to pay a deposit and order in advance I received no reply. I telephoned twice and was assured that the booking was in the diary and that the manager would call me. It did not happen. On the Monday before our visit all of us went to the pub and I agreed tables with the barman and he confirmed the details. He did not take up my offer of a deposit. I told him one of us had to cancel. We had a couple of rounds of drinks. There was a limited supply of beers. We went again on Tuesday and had a couple of rounds of drinks. When 11 of us arrived on the Wednesday I was told the kitchen was not functioning. I asked to speak to the manager who did not seem too interested. I told him I thought that the service was appalling. I was not rude and I did not shout. Unbeknown to me they had e mailed me at 5.30 pm to say the kitchen was not open. I do not check my e mails every hour and so did not know this. The manager's response was to tell me and my companions to F off. Which all 11 of us did. 2 hours later I received an e mail apology. Be very careful

Wow, portion size was huge, food all cooked freshly to order and didn’t disappoint after a full days walking. The team made you welcome and had plenty of local knowledge. All the usual drinks and spirits available with guest beers too, my husband especially liked the Windermere blond! Muddy boots and dogs welcome which is a must when situated where they are. Nothing was too much trouble. Big thanks to Andy and Ashley and the team. We will definitely be back.

A lovely little pub that was just right for a spot of lunch after a long walk. The steaks we ordered were cooked just right and were really flavoursome. The beer garden had great views over Patterdale. It was nice to go in a pub that had no access to any internet for the customers. Who needs WiFi when you have gorgeous views across the valley and numerous points of interest in the décor. David behind the bar was great, making time to talk to all the customers despite being busy. A great little Hostelry.

The White Lion is a long standing family favourite and we had been looking forward to it since leaving London. Lovely friendly atmosphere. We arrived late but received a very welcome and great service from Sarah. Look forward to returning for late lunch after Helvellyn tomorrow.

We had gammon, egg, chips and scampi, chips. The food arrived quickly, very generous portions. We both enjoyed our meals.

Regrettably a truly awful experience. Insulted by the owner in front of my entire family after having enjoyed a lovely day in the hills. Been a patron annually for over 30yrs, unlikely to return anytime soon. The only saving grace I suppose would be that if the owner continues in such a manner, he won't last until Christmas, which will be a good thing for the pub. Fellow guest served a frozen burger next to us, a truly awful place.... sadly, how times change.

Stayed at white lion inn. Patterdale. I think the worst place I’ve stayed. Ramshackle. Not in good condition. Funny smell. Turned up and barman in some kind of football top said my room wasn’t ready. Was nearly 4 and supposed to be ready at 3. After a while he said it was ready. went upstairs, but bed had bottom on it so too small and I asked for another room. Said I’d asked for a bed without a bottom. Took me to another room but that wasn’t ready. Was ironing pillow cases in the hall. Brought a toilet roll in. For the meal a limited menu and very basic but ok. Went to bed. Maybe slept for an hour and woken after one by staff guys going upstairs. Stomping. Maybe a guy on a phone ‘I can’t help who i am’. Dog barking. Woman’s voice. Guy was up and down stairs. Doors banging until 3am. Seemed like a domestic. Sounds an exaggeration but I thought this is scenario where a murder is possible. Also crossed my mind he might lose the plot and come for me as well after me peeing him off about the room. I somehow got back to sleep for 2-3 hours. Brekkast was ok considering. Just kind of glad to leave the place having not been murdered.

It was a long day, 3hr trip by motorcycle and a long walk. After pitching my tent, I had about enough energy to walk to the nearest pub and I was praying for good beer and decent grub. I was not disappointed at all. In fact the giant wooden lion at the end of the bar told me I'd come to the right place! It's friendly, unpretentious and relaxed. Lovely owners we were chatting to for a bit and also very welcome to dogs. Highly recommend and will be back. Cheers from Rob and Andy.

Visited the first weekend of July on both Saturday and Sunday while we were staying up in Hartsop. Lovely staff, nice, clean pub and toilets, can sit outside in the beer garden across the road as well if the weather permits. Saw this attractive and welcoming looking pub and made a beeline for the car park. Friendly staff and we were informed upfront that lunch orders would be taken in 1/2 hr. in fact, our order was taken shortly after the chef finished his! Good beer, generous helpings of good pub grub with reasonable prices. My husband raved about the quality of his ham. Spot on.

we stayed for food for 2 nights ,both had fish and chips 1 st night and 2nd night i had Gammon with chips ,egg ,pineapple and peas while my wife had the vegetarian quiche with chips and salad , all meals were well cooked and served very promptly by Steve ,Denise and Heather 10/10 Thank you

We have stayed here on a few occasions and every time we go we are greeted with friendly staff and a lively atmosphere. It is the perfect place to rest your weiry legs and fill your belly with a good hearty meal and a pint of the local Ale after a good days walking.

Me and my family always stay here when we go to the lakes, it has a perfect location for hiking due to close proximity to most popular mountains. The staff are brilliant friendly and can’t do enough for you to ensure you enjoy your stay. Food is very nice and breakfast is spot on. Can’t fault our stay and never will highly recommend to anyone looking at visiting the lakes.

We found this pub on a busy Saturday night and were greeted warmly by all the staff who were very helpful. They managed to squeeze us in for just drinks as food service was just about to finish for the day. A good range of beers on draught and a very cosy atmosphere. Good pub, we would visit again in the future.

We dropped in for a pint or two. Well, it was a hot day and it pays to hydrate. Lovely clean pub. Great atmosphere. So we had some chips and another pint. Ozzie, the dog, managed to blag some dog treats (Ashley, he fooled you with his sad, doggy eyes). The next day we were in the area and couldn't resist spending some time in the beer garden. We have marked the White Lion down on our map of places to return to.

Visited this pub on Tuesday evening 25 May. Cold wet night pub was welcoming and warm. Speed of service was good. Sister and I had fish and chips, husband had curry. Good size portions, food and plates were hot, good value for the money. Pleasant staff, just one constructive criticism, would suggest the staff smarten their dress code up a notch. Covid regulations adhered to as required. Although personally we’re not particularly bothered about that anymore. Would recommend if you’re looking for a reasonably priced pub meal which is good quality.

We spent several hours in The White Lion after a long trek from Grasmere. The staff were attentive, kind and incredibly helpful. The nachos were great! And we met Ashley - enough said! :D

I walked into the pub with a very warm welcome by all the staff, they are all very polite about the situation of covid i forgot my mask and I was giving one by the owner ash which I thankful for the food was amazing! Second time staying here now myself and my partner arrived early and enjoyed the warmth of the bar with a very nice fish and chips had a relaxing evening then went to our room which was cosy and clean staff were nice after a full English had a walk and said good bye to the owner will be visiting again in near future beautiful views and area

My wife and i stayed here a couple of weeks ago for two nights..Fairfield room was cosy ..Otto and Bilbo loved , our shitzu and terrible terrier!! there new home for 48hrs so did we!! on arrival Andy offered to bring our holdalls from pub car park..my wife had suffered Jaundice twice within six months so white lion was perfect break for us all, we have stayed here on three occasions now and have never had any issues with Andy or Ashley they are off the wall nice guys pair of em!! sure Ashley can spark at times but to be honest id spark too some of the perdantic snoots this guy has to tolerate..! White Lion is never going to be perfect , what pub is ..these guys are the heart and soul and spark !! dont change anything we love your pub and we love you , your dogs too!! stay safe cant wait to visit again at some point. Visited this pub quite a few times over the years. This is the 1st time that we stayed overnight and we were not disappointed. We had 2 rooms 1 double and 1 twin, both lovely and clean and very modern. The landlords and all the staff were really friendly. They were very conscious of Covid 19 and stuck to the rules, making us feel safe. We were even given complimentary drinks as it was my sons 50th birthday.

What a great place! My husband love’s coming here mainly for their Guinness which he says is the best. We were recently staying in Glenridding for a few nights for my husband’s 50th birthday. We couldn’t get anywhere to stay in Glenridding for his actual 50th night which was 24th Oct, after visiting the white lion for a pint or 3 my husband had mentioned to Ashley about his birthday and the fact we were staying in Glenridding but couldn’t get anywhere to stay for his actual birthday night, bang there he was with an offer of a couple of rooms (we had my mother in law and 8 year old daughter) discounted because it was a special occasion offered to us! We took this offer up and I’m so glad we did. What a lovely place, the rooms were spot on and to top it off, they upgraded our rooms and threw in a bottle of champagne for his birthday night. What a lovely gesture and lovely people. Thank you both x

Just popped in for a drink on Sunday 4th afternoon. Lovely selection of drinks, by a roaring fire, with friendly staff. Really strict on covid, which I felt really comforted by. They have even invested in a door push plate leading to the toilet that kills bacteria. The staff refused someone entry without a mask. It made me feel really confident so we stayed for another drink. Really good value and lovely to see they'd took the lockdown opportunity to reupholster the seats.

Stumbled across this place on Facebook and went to see what all the fuss was about with the management responses The staff were very good and made our dog even more welcome than us, it’s just a proper pub with no pretentiousness and I guess the owners just say it how it is, very refreshing in this day and age. ( COVID safe and well implemented )

Sufro de enfermedad inflamatoria intestinal y entré a este pub mientras estaba abierto para usar las instalaciones. No había nadie alrededor y, por lo tanto, no podía preguntar si podía usar los baños ya que debido a mi condición no puedo esperar. Al salir del baño, me recibió un hombre de mediana edad extremadamente grosero que francamente me gritaba en la cara y me preguntaba "¿qué diablos crees que estás haciendo"? ! Traté de explicar mi situación pero no me escucharon, me dijeron que acababa de pasar por unos baños públicos que debería haber usado. (No era consciente de esto, como puedes imaginar cuando estás estresado y necesitas urgentemente el baño, no tienes tiempo de mirar con cuidado, vas al baño más cercano). Soy una chica joven y tener a un hombre mucho mayor en mi cara (a menos de dos metros de distancia, me apresuro a agregar) gritándome, diciéndome que estoy invadiendo y que no tengo ningún derecho fue intimidante. Servicio al cliente vil en un pub que probablemente hubiéramos visitado para tomar una copa más tarde en el día. No recomendaría este lugar a nadie, si así es como tratan a los jóvenes con enfermedades.

Visité este lugar por última vez varias veces en julio, sin embargo, lo he visitado muchas veces antes y puedo decir que nunca he tenido una mala experiencia. A veces han estado (comprensiblemente) ocupados para un establecimiento pequeño. Larga espera por comida una vez, pero nos advirtieron sobre esto. El personal es amable y servicial, excelente ambiente, buen servicio, comida increíble y tamaño de la porción por el precio. Personal amigable. Eran encantadores. Pero al llegar nos dimos cuenta de lo helada que estaba la habitación. El hombre encantador que nos mostró nuestra habitación encendió el radiador y dijo que se encendería más tarde. Nunca lo hizo. La habitación estaba helada. ¡Nos dijeron en algún lugar que el calor no llegaba a la habitación al final del pasillo!Lucharon por encontrar un calentador para enchufar. Finalmente encontraron un extraño calentador halógeno rojo. ¡Calentó la habitación, pero no pudimos dormir con la luz naranja encendida!Los dos tipos que trabajan en la barra. Servir comida saludando a los invitados era encantador, pero parecía no saber totalmente lo que estaban haciendo¡El menú de la noche tenía más elementos tachados de los disponibles!Mi hamburguesa estaba bien.
