Came across this venue by chance during a drive around. Lovely setting, A little strange having to order from the rear of the building garden area but due to the Covid 19 restrictions i guess that was the best good way to facilitate the service to the customers. Good service from the male staff member who served our party of two who was professional and polite and appeared to have a genuine interest in ensuring we were happy with our food. We had hot Camembert with a good quality bread roll and cranberry sauce / wedges, fish and mushy peas. All served and presented well and there was very little waiting time too. As i was driving i had a Heineken Zero which was served in a pint glass and my Mother (other party) had a Coke, all nice and served chilled. Not that we had much choice (Covid 19 restrictions) but to gather in the beer garden but said garden had plenty of seating available (and well spaced out) and is in a delightful setting with a pond and a ruined castle within eye contact. There is plenty of parking available too which is a bonus. Would i come here again? Yes, definitely.

Went for Sunday lunch. Second time we have been to this pub having been to event in Oswestry. The pub allows dogs in the bar area and garden which is great especially when weather hot. After a fabulous meal there in November 2019, we thought we would give the pub some custom again, what a mistakeStarters goat cheese tartlet was like a small bit of cheese on toast ( rather stail bread), black pudding was just okay.Main course two of us had Fish and chips you would expect what can go wrong, the fish was soggy the batter tasteless and the chips were awful, others having the chips said the same. One had a dessert Eton Mess that was good.On top of that the bill had full price for the sweet when it should have been reduced as some had the set fixed price menu.We will not be returning as was the plan in November Sorry but extremely disappointed. The staff were fine, one we remembered from our last visit.

I have got to say that was the worst roast dinner I have ever had, the meat n gravy was brought out first which was only just warm and had to wait a while for the veg to be brought out separately, there was one roast potato cut in half that had obviously been stood keeping warm for hours as it was rock hard, the carrots had been dipped in boiling water as they were rock hard, brocoli was the best part of the meal sadly, shame as the young girls serving were very pleasant and helpful, we will pass this one by in future !!

We booked a table for two for 18.45. We were informed by the waiter that there was no menu, only a blackboard that he would bring in to the room (this is different to other resteraunts and pubs in the area, that are using paper menus). After being seated for half an hour, no-one had been to take our order. During this half hour period, I noticed that my phone was almost stuck to the table. It was disgusting. The people at the next table, who came in ten minutes after us, were served before us. We paid for our (very expensive) drinks, and left in utter discust. We live locally to the White Lion, and will never return. There are plenty of other pubs and resteraunts in the area. In the current situation, I would really have thought that somewhere such as this would have made considerably more effort. I have never had to walk out of a pub or resteraunt before, never been treated quite so poorly. This disgusting treatment ruined what should have been a pleasant eveing out.

The setting is beautiful, the staff were amazing yet the food was awful, the menue said roast turkey with stuffing and cranberry, what i got was luke warm pre cooked packaged turkey and frozen stuffing ball and frozen roast potatoes. It was a birthday celebration for my mother and my money would have been better spent in the chippy round the corner. The beer was rough, the wine was cheap and the food worse than school dinners from the 80s. Save your money! The staff were great though just need a new chef and better porduce to cook with.

The menu was interesting and varied but we all chose from the fixed price menu which we thought was excellent value especially given the high quality of the food. Virtually every plate was clean by the end which says it all. The vegetables were tasty and the service was prompt and friendly. With a sensibly limited menu the quality should have been better. The chicken curry was not a curry. The veg served with the mains was quite ordinary and not hot. Otherwise standard fare. Starters were fulsome and to a good quality. The waiter was good and service was quick. Perhaps we shouldn’t have expected more in a small village on a damp Wednesday in November.I would return because the venue overlooking the castle is great and on a warm summers evening it would probably be delightful.

We booked a table, but on arrival our names had been crossed off the bookings list. The first table we were offered, in the conservatory, was too noisy due to wooden floors and furniture and two “lively” parties. We were moved to somewhere quieter but then forgotten about!Even when our order was taken it took an age for starters to arrive and we didn’t start eating until 45 minutes after arrival. The food itself was perfectly acceptable if nothing special and there was a good choice for my vegetarian partner. The White Lion only stocks one cask beer which was not in very good condition and in any case served far too cold. The young servers were pleasant and enthusiastic but overall the impression we got was of a less than professional organisation

Having been here several times over the years for family lunches today was a massive let down. I booked ages ago for Easter Sunday lunch for 9 people at 2.30pm specifically requesting the conservatory (as always) and ensuring that they could accommodate my mum in her wheelchair. We arrived to be told that the conservatory was fully booked and we would be in a dingy back room down a step thus requiring the wheelchair to go out of the building and back round to access. Obviously we were more than unhappy and a waitress said she might fit us in if any other party finished their meal. My brother asked to speak to the landlord who attempted to sort it out and eventually one of the waitresses cobbled up a squashed table in the conservatory. By this time some of the starters were unavailable and the Sunday roast mains were extremely poor. A massive rock hard 'Yorkshire pudding' came with every meal and the lamb which most of us had was chewy, fatty and gristly. On to desserts, the waitress happily took orders for 4 Eton Messes and a strawberries and cream only to return saying they were no longer available. Oh, forgot to say, the landlord offered free teas and coffees in recompense, however we still ploughed a lot of money into the bar bill, thank you NOT!!!!

The food that we ordered was nice, generous portions and piping hot. Both members of staff were attentive and extremely efficient at their job. The young waiter was lovely with a great sense of humour! However having previously been a regular at this establishment it was very sad to see it so quiet, it used to be buzzing on a Saturday night! Menu wise I would strongly suggest you switch back to home cooked chips and fresh vegetables as opposed to serving peas and frozen chips which no disrespect People could cook at home. Overall a nice meal but improvements could be made to make it as good as it used to be.

So tonight we visited the white lion because we fancied “treating ourselves” (secretly I couldn’t be bothered to cook!). We had a drink, mains and I had a desert because I’m greedy! Firstly, when parking up I noticed a couple doing the deed in a car in the corner of the car park! Why do it in the car park of a popular pub/restaurant?!! Carrying on, for a Saturday night it was empty! 3 other couples where there eating, so atmosphere wasn’t spectacular, however we were served quickly and happily for drinks and food, which all tasted fine, though the lasagne was slightly cold on top but hot and tasty elsewhere. Pheasant casserole off the Christmas menu was tasty but not a lot of it. Fairly standard meal out hence rating but that’s all we wanted really! Would go there again but it’s not somewhere to go if you’re looking for something special, but more of a safe bet!

Visited this pub a year after our first visit, prior to a concert in Oswestry. I really cannot believe some of the "excellent" reviews on here. It has been taken over by new owners and has really gone down hill, in respect of The food served - starter of tempura prawns - batter was thick and awful and tasted as if the oil they were cooked in was well overdue for a change. Similarly the fish and chips, rank batter, cold tasteless chips and mushy peas at a volcanic heat straight from the microwave. Two if us had pale, tasteless roast beef and watery gravy with lacklustre vegetables, the Yorkshire pudding was however spectacular, the highlight of the meal! Stowells wine on tap, probably the worst wine to stock in any self respecting eatery. The only reason we did not complain was because we were very tight for time and risked not eating anything at all! One small saving grace, delightful young waiting staff, very polite, attentive and smiling, particularly the young lad who was working on his first shift. We will not return, shame as it is in a beautiful setting by the castle and was once a great eatery!

The positive review below must be fake as this place has gone downhill. I would never go back. What is the point of serving food that you could make better at home? I recommended this place before but it has now been taken over and the change is dramatic. The staff appear disinterested and disheartened. Slow service. The food is now very disappointing and bland. We had the steak and a third of it was gristle. The pepper sauce was very poor very creamy with some meagre peppers thrown in. The garlic prawns were fewer and less garlic. The portions were smaller and you no longer got a side plate of vegetables. They now have a typical “kids menu” with the inevitable chicken nuggets etc whereas before kids could order a half portion of whatever was on the main menu. Bland bland bland and cheaper ingredients. The so called home made deserts were clearly home made by Brakes Brothers. There was less choice of wine. The music was loud and unpleasant pop hits from the 80s. There was no loo paper in the men’s loos. Had to specifically ask for some. Something has gone badly wrong with this place which used to be a favourite. Sadly we will never return.

Had a lovely pate starter and another friend had the soup again lovely, the mains we had were also very good apart from the awful chips which seemed to be reconstituted and were dry and not very nice tasting.. Why ruin an otherwise excellent meal with these sad excuse for proper potato chips..

Buena comida aunque

While passing through the small village of Whittington we decided to stop at The White Lion for lunch. There was ample space to park the car easily. On entering we decided to sit in the lounge which on reflection was a mistake because the room was quite chilly it may well have been warmer in the conservatory.we chose our meals from the light bites menus. My wife had the small fish chips and peas and I had the sausage with onions chips and peas. Both meals were nicely presented hot and tasty. The staff were pleasant friendly and efficient.Thank you all .

Very regular customers and never disappointed. Lunches have various choices, but undoubtedly their baguettes served with triple cooked chips and a lovely side salad are the winners. Every visit producing exceptional food and quality remains the same each time... been there twice this week!! Lovely staff, service and setting right next to Whittington castle.

It has been several years since our last visit and sometimes the experience isn't so good, not so here, it's lovely to have found things haven't changed. We live locally so the fact that there is a castle next door complete with moat and ducks is something we are used to but never fails to impress. We had booked and were shown into the conservatory which I would recommend as you have a view over the gardens. My wife had food off the fixed price menu £13.95 for two courses be warned the portions are very generous so don't be surprised if you stall at the mains. My wife had leak and potato soup very generous size so much I asked the helpful waitress for an additional spoon and had some together with half the bread, excellent soup, well seasoned and tasty. My wife had fish cakes and said they were excellent.I had pheasant wrapped in bacon served on a potato cake in a whisky mushroom, cream sauce. This was off the specials board (£13.50 (I think)) Awesome !! In addition there were chips and veg all brilliantly cooked. The waitress was excellent as was the guy behind the bar, both were friendly and helpful and the chef although not seen deserves more than a pat on the backIf your looking for a meal out particularly now the evening are getting lighter, enjoy the castle and views before an excellent meal.

Booked a table for 3 business colleagues - looking for the best meal in the area, and for quiet chats over it. Not disappointed - menu comprehensive, main course not outstanding but quite acceptable - colleagues were happy, although service was quite slow - but it was a Monday! Conservatory dining area quite comfortable and pleasant, and tables not too close together. Would be happy to bring guests there again.

The meal deal was great value for money 2 courses for 12.95 there was plenty of food we both couldn't finish! I would recommend this restaurant/pub to anyone it had great atmosphere and a lovely layout. Such a pity it's quite a way from where we live, but we will definitely be returning.

As a party of 7 we enjoyed our recent trip to the White Lion. The food was lovely, home cooked and piping hot! Excellent choice of vegetarian dishes to choose from, in fact I was spoilt for choice which makes a refreshing change. Couple of minor niggles, I ordered the cauliflower and broccoli bake which stated it was served with potato gratin and vegetables. There was no sign of any vegetables, I think they were possible served to another table in error. The desserts were ordered, one of the meringue nests was incorrect but it was still nice. Overall a nice meal and we would return.

Ordered meals table of 3 two adults, nanny & grandad plus 8 year old granddaughter , ordered meals didn't point out that 8 year, old short young person is a child!!!! Starter arrived then said to waitress you have ordered childs portion she said oh no! Obvious or not!!! THEN CAME BACK AND SAID IT WILL ARRIVE IN A LARGE PLATE BUT ORDER CHANGED, went to pay got charged for three adults questioned it, got told we didn't point out we ordered for a child, so asked the people in the the bar if they would give their view is she a child or adult??????? We eat out alot and have never got asked if our under 4ft granddaughter is an adult. Advice for management don't employ brain dead kids to wait on and put people above them who cant see whats going on. To be fair the bar man had got more about him and could see the situation sack the humpty girls who cant see out of the box and put him in charge......

Called in here for Sunday lunch with visiting family. It was busy with lots of full tables, but still the staff searched to give us a table for four: they succeeded.Seated at the last available table, in the bar, by the door, the staff couldn't be more accommodating, especially as one of us required a gluten free meal.We didn't wait long and received a really well cooked Sunday lunch; we chose the pork which was a generous portion in rich gravy, and was served with roasted potatoes, sage and onion stuffing and a Yorkshire pudding. Two dishes of vegetables between the four of us and all piping hot. (Nothing al dente either.) It was delicious and great value.Dessert was good too, and again the staff patiently explained which desserts were gluten free.Would certainly recommend this pub for great well cooked food.

This pub is deceptive, from its quirky layout and slightly old fashioned furniture reveals people passionate about food. We were recommended to eat there by our b&b and I had also researched it previously. Chicken liver and brandy pate served with lovely home made chutney with French baguette, gorgeous!! Braised beef with mash and oodles of perfectly cooked veggies, belly pork done so well with yummy dauphinois and a fab crackling, so divine, we ate every bit, and that took some doing. My only constructive criticism is wine by the glass - stowells -come on' ditch it and have some nice wine. However on the upside,I will not drink stowells, I bought a bottle of NZ Sauvignon which was fantastic and poor me had to drink a whole bottle, great value at under £16.Very very lovely food, thank you.

Our table was in the conservatory-very noisy owing to unremitting hard surfaces. We were second table seated but sixth to be served-staff seemed surprised to be asked when our food was coming (more than 45 minutes for 3 simple lunches) -and no apologies for the delay. The "chicken ham and egg salad" would have more correctly been called chicken ham and egg with lettuce and one halved baby plum tomato. There was a better salad served alongside the steak sandwich, which was also served with chips. That salad included peppers, cucumber and rather more tomatoes. However much of the "steak" was barely edible, being very gristly. Then to find an extra £10 worth of drinks had been added to our bill added insult to injury. (Though admittedly there were apologies as this was rectified.) Probably won't bother going there again-there are plenty of much better places in the vicinity.

We often visit the White Lion for an early evening meal at the weekend. Why? Because of the consistent warm, friendly service, the wide choice of dishes, the willingness not only to serve smaller portions but also to mix and match what is on offer so that I can have exactly what I want. Thank you!

A friend who is a local had recommended this restaurant, saying they always went there for a meal out. This is a pub, so slick restaurant service cannot be expected, but even so, we were disappointed that we were left sitting at our table for some time while the waitress served other tables close by without even a glance in our direction. We saw other people entering the conservatory restaurant bringing menus with them, so my husband went to the bar and got two for us. Eventually a waitress came and took our order, and from then on things went better. There was a good choice on the menu, and a specials board also. The fixed price menu would be excellent value, at just under £16 for three courses, but we chose from the specials board. I omitted a starter, intending to leave room for a dessert, but my husband went for a goat's cheese tartlet with red onion chutney, and enjoyed it very much. He had pheasant for a main course, while I had strips of tender steak in a lovely creamy peppercorn sauce, served with chunky chips and a dish of mixed vegetables. Chips were perfect, hot and delicious, and the vegetables had just the right amount of 'bite' to them. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his meal, and said the pheasant was the best he'd had. Unfortunately I was too full after eating my main course to manage a dessert, but those I saw others eating looked wonderful. To sum up, this restaurant serves beautiful food, but would benefit from a course of staff training!

Overall the food, friendliness of staff and atmosphere were poor. The soup was full of grease. For the mains I had a chicken supreme, pretty sure the bacon was still oinking, had to remove it. There was no warning from the waitress that the plates were boiling hot. Served the beef with a cremated Yorkshire pudding and dishwater for gravy. No cider sauce come with the pork. The staff needed prompting to complete orders and clear up, it was like the people in the conservatory didn't really get a look in.It was also cold, and the radiators were off. It was £21 per head but based on quality of food and service I'd be happy to pay £10.

We have eaten here 4 times in as many months and must say it is one of our favorite restaurants. It's in a lovely location, the conservatory looks out over Whittington castle. The food is consistently of a high standard with generous portion sizes. Last time we had a starter each, which was a bad mistake, as we couldn't finish our main course. Share a starter and a pudding, they're easily big enough to share.Service is always very polite and good, apart from getting the bill. That's the only thing letting the restaurant down. We've had to go to the bar and pay on a couple of occasions as the bill hasn't been forth coming.
