We had lunch to celebrate our son in laws birthday. I chose the sea bass it was perfectly cooked , served with prawns and in a delicious tomato sauce. Family members had the Sunday lunch - no complaints, everyone enjoyed their meal. Such generous portions too! Staff were attentive and the experience was relaxed and comfortable. Good food, good atmosphere, highly recommend!

Allow me to sing the praises of the perfectly cooked sea bass I enjoyed for lunch on Easter Monday - succulent fish served with a light, flavoursome tomato sauce that complimented it so well. I can't remember ever having a better seafood dish in a British pub. Exciting starters and well-priced deserts ranging from the familiar favourites to the slightly more exotic. Good selection of specials to compliment the set menus that can be found on the website. Foolishly I ordered my drink before I chose to eat fish, but the well-kept pint of Station Bitter was a fine, traditional bitter - not a hint of grapefruit or other citrus flavour to irritate this conventional man.

Someone told us that there was a new chef and the food was good, so we thought that we would try it and went for Sunday dinner. All I can say is that food was amazing. We had garlic mushrooms as a starter which was the best I have ever tasted- totally delicious. This was followed by lamb shank roast dinner that was of the same standard it was excellent. I can’t remember having such a wonderful meal served by friendly and efficient staff. Well done full complements to the chef and the team. We would recommend this to everyone. We will certainly be going back.

After a disappointing visit to a nearby attraction we wanted something to eat and a drink and this pub was nearby. Booked online and when we arrived table was already set, plenty of room on car park and we were seated straight away. Not a huge menu but something for everyone. Carribean chicken is amazing, chips are gorgeous and lasagna was enjoyed more than one eaten in Rome a few weeks ago. Staff were lovely and nice to see the chef pop out and see if everyone enjoyed the food as well. Didn't think it was unreasonably priced for the quality and potion sizes just right. We have been saying ever since how much we enjoyed the food and wished it was closer to home! Only reason for not being 5 stars was the room and the loos could be smarter but would happily drive the almost hours journey on occasion for the amazing food.

We booked for dinner as we knew the White Lion had reopened for food with a new chef. We were not disappointed the food was delicious, we had the rib eye steak, the sea bass special and the penne vodka. All were beautifully cooked and served. The service was great and the staff were friendly. We will definitely be eating here again.

Stepping into a pub that feels like it’s been there forever (in the best way). That’s The White Lion in Ash Magna—a proper, community-owned pub where Sunday roasts still mean something. I went in hoping for a decent lunch, and what I got was borderline life-affirming. The lamb shank fell off the bone like it’s got nothing left to prove. There’s buttery mash, crispy-on-the-outside parsnips, and a good splash of rich gravy over a delicious Yorkshire and roasties, with indulgent cauliflower cheese served on the side —all an absolute winner. It’s one of those plates that makes you feel like all’s right with the world. Five-star material without any pretentious frills. I didn’t second guess going for a dessert, which doesn’t happen often for me unless the main meal’s really done its job. An apple crumble arrived, topped with vanilla ice cream and a hint of cinnamon, big and warm and as comforting as it gets. It’s the kind of dessert you can’t help but imagine getting even better as Christmas edges closer. My girlfriend went for the roast beef, then finished with a tiramisu, and there wasn’t a complaint between us. At £20.95 each, it’s crazy good value. Our friends also had the starters, a gorgeous looking garlic mushroom dish and the age old classic pate, £24.95 for them, what a steal too. Chloe, our server, was on top form—friendly, smiley, attentive without overdoing it, everything you want. There’s something special about a pub like this - being run by the village, for the village. It’s lively, welcoming, and doesn’t have a single ounce of chain-pub blandness. We’ll 100% be back, and I’d say it’s absolutely worth anyone’s while to make the trip!

Visited with friends for a music festival this weekend and wow, what an amazing pub!! We only planned on staying for a couple of hours but think we finally left at half 11 🙈 The staff were lovely, the food was amazing (I had the Bratwurst and loaded fries, it was all cooked fresh and was amazing value!) - my partner is a real ale drinker and said that the bitter was perfect, plus they had local ones one which is such a nice touch. This is such a hidden gem of a pub, we’ve been before and had an amazing roast dinner here but hadn’t really seen the garden or the bar area and it’s pristine. We’ll def be back and please do another ash fest next year!!

We visited the White Lion on the 31st August to attend Ash Fest. WOW what an amazing local event which was so well organised. We arrived and bought tickets for food and drink; entry was free, which we couldn’t quite believe. The ticket idea was great as it made the process of buying drinks and food quick and easy. We got cool Ash Fest wrist bands which will go in our memory box. Thankfully, the weather was fantastic, but there was a huge, covered area just in case, which also provided shade from the sun. We sat in the beer garden with some friends which was beautiful. Children were playing and everyone was enjoying themselves. The live bands were excellent lots of local talent in the area. The headline act Elvis impersonator was just brilliant. We danced all night and met some wonderful people. The food was great just what you need at a festival, burgers, pizza and loaded fires. All freshly cooked and tasted fantastic. The staff behind the bars worked so hard and they all had a smile on their faces despite being incredibly busy all day and night. 2 ample car parks were clearly displayed and well managed. Additional Portaloo’s had been provided, all toilets were really clean and they didn’t run out of loo paper – this is an important factor at a festival 😊 The whole day and night was a huge success and we will definitely be going next year, it was such a fun day. There was even a competition for best dressed festival goer. We got talking to some locals who explained that they are currently don’t have a chef and haven’t had for a couple of months. We have been for Sunday lunch last year and it was fabulous so hopefully they will be up and running again soon. We were made to feel so welcome and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Roll on Ash Fest 2025.

This is an amazing country pub full of friendly locals and passing travellers. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit there this weekend for ‘Ashfest’ a local music festival The weather was kind to us and the whole day was absolutely brilliant with live bands, great food and an amazing Elvis tribute to close the show! Have visited the pub before and without exception have always been greeted warmly and thoroughly enjoyed visiting. The pub is immaculately clean (despite what a previous reviewer has inferred) and very well stocked with beers and spirits Highly recommend a visit to Ash and the White Lion if you’re in the area. You won’t be disappointed! 👍

Absolutely appalling experience and horrible attitude from “owners”. We decided to visit the pub again with our family after last time finding the pub had transformed from the dark, dirty, pub we had known it to be with an unkempt weed garden in to a beautiful, welcoming family friendly pub with ducks in the garden (new manager had transformed it). But when we arrived we found it wasn’t a patch again. The ducks had all gone from the garden, the pub looks uncared for and the vile smell of dirty toilets hits you immediately as you walk in the door! Nevertheless we had driven out to the pub, with family in tow so thought we’d have a bite to eat in the garden as their outdoor BBQ was on (disappointed but hungry) only to be informed there was no food being served. When I pointed out that there were several customers sitting outside eating, we were informed “that was only for shareholders!!” So basically there WAS food being served, just not for us. When I asked if Stuart was around (he’d been so welcoming before) I was informed he’d left. Well all I can say is; it shows!! It’s back to how it was. We won’t be bothering to visit again. Unless we buy some shares in the place, maybe then we’ll be considered ‘worthy’ customers.

Came to support FeFest and witnessed what could only be described as bullying, intimidation and complete unprofessionalism by Stuart the Manager to a young male staff worker. The young man had clearly made a mistake but for Stuart to repeatedly swear at him infront of lots of people was completely uncalled for. He abused his power as a Manager. Would not recommend this place nor will I be going back. Do hope the young man is ok as he was visibly shaking.

APPALLING GENERAL MANAGER!!!! Unfortunately our last visit to the White Lion was tainted by witnessing the general manager (whom I believe is named Stuart) verbally abusing a young staff member in front of customers! And continue to mock the waiter to customers was absolutely unprofessional! We as a family were utterly shocked as we have previously been welcomed into this pub with warm friendly faces. It goes against all of our values we instil and we will not be returning!

This is the perfect example of a proper village pub. We visited last weekend for the first time in a couple of years and I’m so glad we did. Upon arrival we were given a lovely warm greeting by the new landlord, Stuart and served by a very lovely woman (we think she was the landlady??). The weather was lovely so we decided to take our drinks out in to the garden where we were delighted by the sight of beautifully cared for hens and the friendliest ducks I’ve ever encountered. It was absolutely delightful. It was like a little countryside oasis, you’d never know you were only a few miles outside of the town. If you’ve not been to the pub recently, I highly recommend it. It’s not like it used to be, now it’s under new management. It’s now very warm and inviting and the garden is now lovely. We’ll definitely be going regularly!

Visited the pub for a family Sunday lunch and can safely say it was the best meal I’ve had for a very long time! The staff were super friendly on arrival, we enjoyed a drink in the bar area before we sat down; they had a great selection and the roaring fire made it such a homely feel. We skipped starters and went straight for the roast which arrived with all the trimmings including red cabbage and cauliflower cheese inc in the price, and the portion size was fantastic. The beef was pink and tender, and the pork and chicken succulent - and all were served with huge homemade yorkshire puddings! For desserts we had a mix of sticky toffee pudding, cheesecake and the kids had ice cream, again super tasty and great portion sizes for the price. We’ll definitely be visiting again soon!

We have been several times to have lunch or dinner at this lovely, quaint pub. The welcome is always warm and friendly and it is run by the local community, who quite clearly are proud of it and keen to see it kept open for business. It is situated just a short drive out of Whitchurch and has an ample car park at the back of the pub. Many times we have decided to walk there via Edgeley Bank (towards Brown Moss), which takes about 1 hour. The food is always delicious and plentiful and the pub as a good selection of nice beers, too. Pre-booking via their website is always a good idea! If I had to suggest an improvement - more of a personal preference - then I would have to say that I would much more prefer my food on a warm plate rather than a wooden board or slate slab.

Called in on a Thursday lunchtime and we were the only ones there. Very friendly welcome from the gentleman owner, it was myself, my 2 children (4 and 6 months in a pram) and my mum. He kindly opened the doors for us and offered us the choice of where to sit. Service was great and he was so lovely with my little boy, who is a typical boy and endlessly inquisitive (thank you for answering his many questions!) The menu offers good choice and the prices are reasonable. I had the homemade chicken curry, which was delicious. Perfectly cooked chicken, fresh fluffy rice and a lovely naan bread (not a mini one you shove in the toaster either!) My son had the kids burger which was obviously homemade and a really good size for a kids meal. My mum had the Cajun chicken burger which was also well cooked and a good size, had fresh salad on and homemade coleslaw too, which seems to be rare these days! We thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely be back soon!

Called in on a mid-week evening for a drink and meal. It was lovely to enter a warm and welcoming hostelry with log fires burning, in both the bar and lounge, where we were seated. We tried the locally brewed Salopian and Stonehouse Brewery ales, which were in fine fettle and then had a thoroughly enjoyable meal, accompanied with a bottle of delicious red wine. We had a memorable evening, which included great company, a warm and cosy atmosphere in a lovely village inn. Well done the new owners!

We visited today to celebrate our dear friend’s birthday and wow, what a magical afternoon we had. We had booked a table in the old stables as we wanted to be able to sing happy birthday without upsetting other diners with our terrible singing voices. We were given the lovely table in the corner by the fire, which was just perfect. We were served by a lovely young girl, who made us feel like nothing was too much trouble. We all had roast dinners and not only were the flavours incredible, but the presentation was perfection. My partner is actually a chef himself, so he’s not always the easiest to please food wise but he said this is now his new favourite place for a rare day off. The pub is under new management and it was immediately evident that they’ve made significant improvements to the place since we last visited under the old management. With improved menus, nicer decor and fabulous service we’ll definitely be returning again soon for a date night!

Such a disappointing visit. Ushered into the Cow Shed. Zero atmosphere, stressed staff. Asked for water, didn’t arrive. Had to ask for cutlery, food cold by the time we had the cutlery. Food was ok, hot or even warm would have been nice. Asked for the bill, didn’t arrive, went to pay and left. Not asked once if everything was ok, in which case I would have mentioned it. First and last visit. I suspect from overhearing other guests that they won’t be returning. £50 odd hard earned money would have been better spent elsewhere. We wanted to support new owners. I hope things improve in the future for them as they have the foundation of what could be a great country pub. Beef was good (but cold) having been dragged from the pub to the Cow Shed. Over cooked broccoli, under cooked cauliflower cheese. The half a carrot and slither of parsnip taste was good but again cold. Ice cream scoop of mash….cold. I’m looking for some positives but I’m struggling to find them with either food or service.

I organised a group of 19 ladies to visit the White Lion yesterday for lunch from the Christmas menu. Shaun, the manager, was very easy to communicate with and understanding when I had to cancel a couple of places due to illness. We ate in the separate room at the back which was lovely and warm on a very cold day. It was just the right size for our party and it was great to have exclusive use of this room. The food was served quickly and efficiently and was superb. I can personally recommend the beef bourguignon as being delicious. Other ladies said the salmon and turkey were equally delicious. It was also very good value, as were the drinks. All 19 off us enjoyed our meal and will certainly be back another time.
