What an unexpected joy! We had just arrived by bus from Shrewsbury and were gasping for a cuppa- but this was so much more! The croissants looked amazing but in the end we chose a lemon polenta cake - gorgeous. And a passion fruit macaron with chocolate filling- an unusual but winning combination. I also bought a rosemary and sea salt focaccia for later. Yum!

My husband asked what were on the finger sandwiches and were told it’s a set menu which could not be changed, I had the ones he didn’t like, but there was no options for him to have more plain ones - the pastries and cakes were beautiful but £38 per person with no alternative sandwich choice is quite steep. The venu is beautifully quaint but please replace the handryer in the ladies loo, it’s not pleasant to use facilities held together with bodge tape! Glad we tried it but probably won’t return.

The croissants and coffees we had were excellent and the staff were friendly. The interior of the shop is a little confused though, the modern style does not suit the building's exterior and results in a very dark place that is quite uncomfortable to spend any length of time inside. It's a shame because everything else about this place is lovely but the interior design makes you feel like you're inside a cellar or something.

One can enjoy the delicacies they offer - Croissants & Cookies are the best, either while catching up with friends or for a quick/short family reunion with parents/grand parents/cousins. It's even better to be curled up with a book sitting by the window in a corner table, flipping the pages, sipping the coffee. We are so privileged to have a real classy bakery here in Oswestry and Adam, a semi-finalist in the 2019 series of Channel 4’s ‘Bake Off is a true professional. The Black Gate previously a pub is a beautiful Grade II 400 year old listed historical building and can be dated back even more to before 1620's or so.... Full of beams and wonky floors and walls, it is simply stunning. Warmly decorated, relaxing and inviting atmosphere with classic music in the background makes your visit here very enjoyable and special. Niche Patisserie started up here in 2020 and so good to see that it's thriving... My stunning freshly baked "cinnamon swirl" was out of this world, deliciously perfect along with my tasty Latte coffee. A family business which should be very proud of what they have achieved here at Niche Patisserie, The Black Gate in Oswestry. A warm welcome and very friendly, smiling service by Samantha at the counter makes one feel totally relaxed and right at home. Highly recommend this bakery, restaurant and one of the best selection of patisseries ever...all freshly baked on a daily basis.. A big thank you to mom Samantha and son, Adam the master Baker, well done! Will most certainly be popping in more often now...

I had a disappointing experience with your food today. I bought a Nutella croissant and some orange brownie. The only flavour of the Nutella croissant was salt, tasted like peanut butter not Nutella. The main flavour of the orange brownie bits was sugar, with a slight undertone of orange, any potential chocolate flavour was overpowered by the immense amount of sugar in the thing. I would hope for a bit more depth of flavour in my patisserie goodies.

Afternoon Tea Experience was an absolute delight. Booked for a friend's special Birthday celebrations having read some of the previous reviews. So glad we booked in advance as all the tables were occupied. We had the sumptuous velvet sofa and chairs near the old range. It was comfortable and very soon had our tea at the table. They have a good selection from English Breakfast and Earl Grey to Peppermint and fruit infusions as well as coffee. Our savoury selection arrived and the finger sandwiches were moist and delicious and the quiche and sausage roll delicious with beautiful pastry. They were so nice we forgot to take any photos. We had fresh crockery and then the warm scones and cakes arrived. All of the individual cakes were described as well as where the cream came from (Cheshire) the jam is made in house and the quality of all the ingredients shines through. We were made to feel very welcome by Sam and the other lovely front of house lady and were never rushed. The bread and baked goods in the shop looked absolutely delicious and we will definitely be returning to sample more in the future. Oswestry has an absolute gem on The Black Gate! Thanks again.

Went for a special treat for coffee and pastries. Arrived 10.45am, most pastries gone, only 2 left to choose from and they are open until 4pm (plus a vegan version but not our thing). Croissants were really nice and should be for the inflated price. Setting was a let down for a listed building- plastic seating and a cold ambiance. Coffee was small and strong (ok for me but not my partner) and took so long to arrive that it didn’t accompany the pastries. Unfortunately, looking at other reviews on here it seems a common theme and either they are not being read or not making the improvement required. Sadly a special treat was disappointing. OMG amazing! They work with a local dairy farm called Herd where the yogurt in the croissant and milk in the coffee comes from apparently 2 miles down the road! So “niche” to see them using local produce, service was great and they took the time to tell us about the fillings in all the different croissants! they also offered a large selection of freshly bake breads from sourdough, baguette and tin loafs, also love the fact you can also buy the same flour they use in there bakes to take home and bake at home ! This is a typical example of when a chef can. It doesn't mean they should. The patisserie cakes are outstanding, the coffee is great, and they should make more of this with a cake based afternoon tea experience. For the sweet treats, five stars. But what they should steer away from is the savory items, which leave a lot to be desired, especially the sour dough bread which they seem to rave about, but in fact is a tough chewey difficult eat. This then makes any sandwiches or specials, we'll below similar experiences. One star. Keep to the cakes or employ a savoury chef. For customers, swerve the savoury. There were a few tables in today that made similar comments under their breath.

We had little choice and ordered soup toasties and various pastries, took a very long time to arrive at the table….once served that faire was frankly not that good. The patisseries & Croissants in my opinion were not fresh and were hard. Overall experience was very disappointing indeed after having driven an hour to get to the location on a recommendation that it was a must visit little gem. I have been fortunate to experience afternoon tea’s in different parts of the country but here at Niche Patisserie In the wonderful setting of what was once known as the Black Gate Oswestry, in words that I can only express as “crème de la crème” of the afternoon tea experience. We were escorted to our table all nicely set for two and from then on we were taken good care of from start to finish. If you are looking for that “special treat” then you have certainly come to the right place. Warm and welcoming ambience but more importantly very relaxed that is hugely important, no rush just go at your own pace. I have been so eager to bring my wonderful beloved here for quite some time, only to have work and life get in the way, but at last I treated her to a Christmas Afternoon Tea experience that we will never forget. Went for brunch - the staff are very friendly and the building is wonderful, they've brought the history back to it lovely. Good variety on the menu alongside the pastry options we've previously ordered for home (their croissants really are incredible and we're obsessed)! I had a latte and soup, and both were some of the best I've ever had. Defintely coming back for many more brunches!

Doughy rather than crisp lamination in pastries, not my preference Polite staff, but not focusing on customer experience. Each staff member would leave the counter to follow up a separate action rather than completing a customer order/experience. This led to delays and drinks arriving well after pastries delivered. Walk through each customer experience and see where the breaks are and you'll move people through more happily and productively

Lovely, hideaway eatery! Great service in an amazing old school house. Awesome food at reasonable prices and caters for most dietary requirements. Also dog friendly!

Working local to Weston today , decided to treat my son to a bit of lunch . We both opted for the Peri Peri Chicken ,he had wings and I had thighs . We chose skin on fries and slaw , oh my goodness is all I can say to describe our meal . I’m so glad we hadn’t got a lot to do this afternoon, both full up with good quality and tasty food . Excellent service and very friendly staff at this venue. We have had a great breakfast in the past , only thing now is to try a Sunday roast . We have had good recommendations about the roast.
