The White Horse Thai Restaurant in South Oxfordshire

I’ve been coming here for the last ten years: the food remains excellent authentic Thai food for a very good price, with service to match. This is the heart of the village with a great atmosphere. Cannot recommend enough.

This is our favourite “ go to” restaurant for so many reasons. Food is fresh and cooked to order, tasty and delicious. Atmosphere is quiet, tranquil and cosy and service first class. In winter the huge log burner adds a really homely touch. The prices are so reasonable, food and drinks all fairly priced. Beautifully clean and tables nicely spaced out. Fresh stir fries, massaman, panang, lots of thai seafood and of course red and green Thai curries. The Pad Thai is outstanding . Always go for tempura prawns or salt and pepper squid for starters. Staff are always happy, friendly , and welcoming. Love this place ! Cannot fault it. Oh yes, plenty of parking too

Excellent food, service and quaint setting. Really really good. We had the mixed starter which gave a variety of tastes to try. We then had pad Thai, duck red curry and the sweet and sour chicken. All was very fresh and delicious. Well worth a trip.

A group of seven of us turned up for lunch. The welcome was warm, friendly and genuine. A couple of tables were swiftly moved together so that we could all sit as one group. I asked if I might have some Tom Kha Gai soup (which was not on the lunch menu!) since I love this particular dish. The excellent staff were unfazed by this request and said of course I could have it! When I described this soup to my friends, some of them wanted to try it too. The food arrived very promptly (even the off-menu Tom Kha Gai) and it was all beautifully presented and tasted absolutely delicious. It was also very reasonably priced. All in all, a really good experience and I would recommend this pub to everyone!

Cute pub with authentic Thai cuisine and a real fireplace which adds to the charm. The price is reasonable, the owner and the staff are great.

The best food I have had out for ages, fed up of mediocre meals for a lot of money, here you get the complete opposite . Stunning food , tasty and fresh for a reasonable price especially like us you go at lunch time . . Under £14 for a two course meal or £35 for a feast for 2 . We nearly didn’t go in, as it looked abit shabby from the outside, thought it was closed down but saw a light on that led to a warm welcome , glowing real fire and excellent food and service .

Another wonderful authentic Thai meal at this cosy pub / restaurant. Delicious tempura prawns and salt and pepper squid to begin, served with dips and salad garnish. Then on to tasty stir fries with coconut rice. Usually go for massaman or panang but loved this crisp freshly cooked stir fry for a change. Incredibly well priced , staff are lovely, family owned and there is a genuine warm welcome. Timothy Taylor real ale, excellent wine selection and the best log fire you will find anywhere . Can’t rate it highly enough.

Yet again, the best Thai meal!! The massaman curry is amazing and so is the Penang! Cute spot for a lovely dinner Thank you!

We have been before so knew the food was good. Again we were blown away with the quality. We had the larger lunch meal deal. An amazing two courses plus coffee for just £35 for the pair of us. Wonderful food and fantastic value. Very much appreciated and we’ll be back :-)

My daughter and family live in Bristol and my wife and I in Cockfosters. We wanted to meet roughly half way and my son researched the web and suggested we try the White Horse. We are so glad that we did as we enjoyed one of the tastiest, most satisfying, meals eaten anywhere, with quite deliciously authentic Thai flavour and presentation (the impressive art of carving carrots into the shape of roses!). The owner, his family, and staff could not have been more welcoming and helpful. Wholeheartedly recommended.

Aaaah where to begin? This place rocks! From the friendly, super speedy staff to the incredible plethora of flavour from their Thai menu, the White Horse now has a special place in my heart. I ordered the prawn Pengnan accompanied with coconut rice which was perfectly spiced and instantly transported my to rural Thailand. I would recommend whole heartedly to all my friends, family and companions! It’s fair to say that Oxfordshire is a better place with The White Horse in it. A massive shout out to all of their staff who made tonight a night to remember…

We have visited this pub/restaurant on many occasions, and had takeaways during lockdown, and without fail have always enjoyed a delicious Thai meal. We opted for pancake rolls for a starter which were very enjoyable, followed by Phad Prig Chicken. This was absolutely delicious as the food always is here. Quite a cosy, intimate restaurant with about 10 tables, very friendly staff

I have reviewed this restaurant several times before and always given it 5 stars for the wonderful Thai food and great service. On this occasion the food was as good as always, Duck Rolls with a sweet dip and a Chicken Massaman curry for my main. However the service was extremely poor. No problem with the starter, it was the main where the trouble started. I overheard the waitress deliver the food to the next table and thought it was a coincidence they ordered the same as us. We waited and waited and after asking where our meal was the owner explained it had been delivered to the next table. We were given hot plates which got cold and still no food, more hot plates and still no food, as the third hot plates arrived, one of the dishes arrived. I spotted my meal on the bar where the waitress had placed it while she answered the phone, so eventually got up and got it myself. The owner offered us a free drink but it was a very disappointing evening, the worst service I can remember. Nobody asked us if everything was alright with the meal, and nobody said goodbye when we left. I don't know if the staff were new, maybe it was just a bad night.

Very friendly atmosphere, very nice vibe. We used to live in SE Asia and so we are quite finicky about Thai food. We had the Tom Yum soup, could have been more spicy but we forgot to ask for more spice! It was delicious anyway the prawns were plump and fresh. Then I had the chef special seafood, generous portions , Full to the brim with seafood with a delicious sauce. My husband had a very tender (extra spice added) duck curry. Then as a added bonus the chef brought out his own chicken curry which is to die for , fragrant with spices and fresh flavour , and even though we were so full , we ate it!

Visited with friends for a mid week meal. Very friendly, welcoming staff. Gorgeous flavours and true tastes of authenic Thai cusine. Spiced as requested by each person, one of us enjoys extreme chilli heat. can fully understand why its so popular.

Recommended to us by a local! This did not disappoint! Satay chicken and chicken wings to start were delicious and served with tasty dipping sauce.Mains - partner had a stir fry which was a great size and tasted amazing. I asked the owner for advice and was sold his special curry with fresh chilli which is not on the menu! I was blown away, huge portion size, very hot but kept the other flavours too, there was nothing left!A must visit!Owner is also a cricket fan, what else is needed?

Visited x3 times now and each time the staff are always friendly, the food comes out fairly quickly, it's hot and the flavours are absolutely fabulous. I have tried half the menu and not found anything which wasn't wonderful. 10/10 will go again!

Found this please by accident but what a fantastic find the food was the best Thai food I have had in a long time we had the mixed starter and the quality was superb Followed by the jungle curry which was hot but not too hot - cannot recommend this please highly enough

The place is really amazing. We had the best thai food in UK, especially the soups. Great service and atmosphere.

Hemos estado allí 3 veces y cada vez hemos tenido una magnífica comida tailandesa auténtica servida con mucha rapidez ya un precio razonable. No puedo alabarlo demasiado y están bien preparados para las precauciones de distanciamiento social.

Llevé a mi novio aquí por su cumpleaños esta noche. Primera vez que hemos estado y la comida era deliciosa. Muy auténtica comida y entrante mixto fue una excelente relación calidad-precio. No creo que haya tenido un curry rojo tan sabroso desde que estuve en Tailandia hace unos años. El personal era muy amable y encantador ambiente acogedor. Defo lo recomiendo!

We went to the White Horse for a Thai meal . The food was between average and good , the drinks reasonable and the overall value for money adequate . Service too was friendly . The restaurant area had a pleasant atmosphere although there was a nasty draught on the table we were allocated ( they moved us ). When the manager came and made a fuss of us the service element suddenly went much higher ! Mixed starters - OK but not outstanding . The duck spring rolls nice but not excellent value . The main Penang curry was the best main dish alongside the vegetable pad thai .

Again we didn't book but arrived earlier and got a table. Lovely welcoming staff and again the food was superb. Prawn pad Thai is my favourite and the duck spring rolls as a starter were amazing.thank you

No puedo comentar sobre la comida ya que solo llamé para tomar una bebida a la hora del almuerzo mientras caminaba por la zona, sin embargo, me sorprendió gratamente ver dos cervezas reales disponibles a precios razonables para la zona. Recibí una amable bienvenida a pesar de que no estaba comiendo, los platos que vi que se servían ciertamente se veían bien, así que probablemente volveré a comer en el futuro.

We did not book so needed to sit at high table on bar stools but that didn't spoil the visit! Hugh quality food and lovely friendly staff made for a lovely experience

Este fue un regalo inesperado de hecho. Habíamos llevado al perro a pasear desde Wheatley a través de bosques y campos con la intención de detenernos aquí para almorzar por una recomendación. No me decepcionó. Los menús de almuerzo (ya sea 9/10) son muy buenos,. La comida sabrosa, bien cocinada y fresca. El servicio también fue muy bueno.

There is a talented chef at work behind the scenes here and the service is warm and efficient. We had a very tasty meal, delicately flavoured and presented with professionalism. Would definitely recommend this inn for pub food with a difference!

Visited the white horse for a birthday lunch

Out with the girls for birthday lunch food was ok. The restaurant very dated. But the manager was very rude when we questioned the bill.

We have been coming to the White Horse for years and it is our 'go to' for any occasion!

Recommended and didn't disappoint. This small, unassuming pub serves sensational Thai food, and good local ales, all at very reasonable prices. It's small, so book in advance, or it offers take-away.

How wonderful to have no palm sugar and no sugar - Thai for a diabetic. What a thrill. No loss of taste or quality. And personally arranged for no extra cost. A lovely place with prices to match.

Went here with my parents didn't even know it was a Thai, which was a surprise. Staff were friendly and welcoming. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced! Would definitely go again.

We were served very quickly by lovely staff ; the food was as good as any Thai food we have eaten anywhere including Thailand . We had mixed starters then chicken Penang which I asked for medium hot but was a bit hot for me so be careful. That said it was still delicious. My wife had crispy duck in tamarind sauce which also was beautiful. There is a smaller menu at lunch time so we will definitely be going back to try this quaint old English pub in the evening ,recommended for a quiet lunch

Two of us were taken by a friend who has been on a regular basis . As it was our 1st visit a table was booked . On being seated we were served drinks promptly and decided that we would order a set meal for 2 (Thai) which was altered to 3. When the food arrived it was very hot and the serving dishes were lovely .We had assorted starters,3 main dishes and jasmine rice with tea or coffee to finish . Everything was pipping hot and delicious which we all enjoyed and will certainly be returning. "Excellent".

Visitamos aquí para celebrar un cumpleaños. Comida a su alto nivel de calidad habitual. Buena elección y el menú es variado, con frecuencia, así llegar a probar nuevas opciones. El Chablis en £22 la botella era un excelente acompañamiento para la comida. El tamaño de las porciones, así puede tener entrantes, plato principal y postre. El menú de postres ha cambiado y la mousse de chocolate es para morirse. No hay postre, café, lo cual es una pena.

We always enjoy eating here, very welcoming even when busy, nothing is too much trouble. Fresh food, well cooked and well presented leads to clean plates every time.

Just moved into the village, so decided to try out the white horse for lunch.

It isn’t easy finding really excellent Thai food, but I just did. I am hoping to visit again very soon and this time to have a sit down dinner. I might have to taste everything! Definitely worth a visit.

We came here as a party of 5-2 English-1 German and 2 Mauritian. We all loved the different dishes and chose separately-Fabulous-we all had 3 courses all of which were excellent! We normally choose a fixed menu which is excellent value as you get so many dishes! Well done!

Such a lovely small friendly restaurant which always gives personal service. Staff are always very attentive (Boat and Maisie) as well as Ali and Anwar who own this little gem. Mixed starter is a must and all main dishes are great.

Agradable y sin pretensiones. Utilizando productos frescos de super su propio jardín. El menú es bastante limitado, pero todos y cada uno de los platos que he probado han sido de primera calidad. También la comida tailandesa están muy bien preparados, en particular el pollo. Muy recomendado.

This was a very nice little restaurant with great tasting food. At our last meal here the portion size had been cut down and a mixed starter for three people is not enough When we asked the waitress what the sauce were in the dishes no one appeared to know. This is not very helpful if like our party no one can speak there language. Dishes that we did not seemed very bland with no real taste.

Had an excellent evening meal at the White Horse. The food was really very good. The was service friendly and efficient. We will certainly go again.

This is our local how lucky are we,the food is soooo good and staff are lovely.with nothing being to much trouble.The only problem we have is staying away.

We took the set menu for £15. Including the shared starter platter and 3 mains to share plus rice. All that for £15, this is a bargain considering the quality of the food. Really top Thai food. To my taste it could be much spicier, but it is very tasty. Couple of recommendations though:- book a table, as the place is very small.- today it is 2C and snowy outside. They have difficulties to keep up with warmth inside this old pub. Take a jumper...

As good Thai food as I've had anywhere outside Thailand. Well worth the journey to the village. Menu limited but all good, fresh food. They're happy to vary the dish if e.g. you don't like peppers or want it 'thai style hot'. Staff and owners all very friendly. SIngha on tap which is a big bonus.

We love Thai food and have tried all the restaurants in Oxford and surrounding area and this is the best in terms of quality and value for money. Lovely fresh ingredients, beautifully presented, ample portions, great little pub. A popular, regular girly lunch option as well as takeways for Friday nights. Really friendly place. Been coming for years now. So lucky to have this gem so close to where we live!

Whilst keeping the charm of an old English public house, this establishment has added Thai cuisine that is just SO good! Fresh, fragrant and delicious food.A few good bitters are also on tap.

Went for my birthday dinner on last Sunday with my friends. We had 20 people. We had lovely time, all my friends enjoyed every moment of the evening. The dinning area is beautiful, with beautiful old pub, with wood burner. Authentic Thai food. Very tasty! Very friendly owner.Great place to chill out, tasty food, or just have a quick drink. Good option for dinner parties too!

Usually we have take away but this time we decide to eat in after family afternoon out. Reasonable busy for a middle week day. Food good and very tasty as usual maybe more rice on the set menu choice will be better.

Small Thai restaurant in old village pub with exposed beams.There are a few tables outside at the front of the pub, but we chose to sit in the small patio area round the side of the restaurant, where there are a few tables also, as it is hidden from the road.We ate at lunchtime so chose from the 2 course set menu. There are 7 starter options, and 16 mains priced at £7.50 or £9.50 for 2 courses.For starters I chose chicken wings which were delicious with a small salad and a sweet chilli dip. I would recommend their Won Ton soup, and have chosen on previous visits to warm me up during the winter months.I have not eaten duck here before, so chose Crispy Duck with Tamarind Sauce which was accompanied by a small salad and rice. Huge amount of duck, and it was delicious, I haven't eaten better Thai food.Staff always cheerful, and service was prompt.

Excellent food, good value for money, nice atmosphere. Chose the restaurant more for the location than anything (equidistant between our house & our friends' place) but also noted that were good reviews on Trip Advisor. Can't really say anything against the place really. Will definitely be going back. Booking is a must because there are not that many tables.

An old English pub that serves authentic Thai food. My brother, who's reached the end of his annual Blighty vacation, fancied a Thai to kick off his taste buds before his flight home to Bangkok tomorrow. We googled and found the White Horse. No rhyme or reason why we chose it. Really glad we did. Left the ordering to brother; which he did impressively in Thai. The result was a selection of really tasty and fragrant dishes that were remarkably like the food that he gets at home. He was happy, it hit the spot and we've made a new discovery.

Four of us were looking for a meal after a round of golf on a Sunday evening, in an area we are not from. I found this Thai Restaurant which had pretty good reviews on here. The place was obviously an old village pub so the ambiance is not typically Thai . The food is very good quality the menu very varied and the service was very good. I would recommend a visit here. Only down side is the car park is not that big but we parked just round the corner.

Amazing food! We have been there a couple of times, trying the set menus, and everything so far has been really good. Staff is very friendly and attentive, and it´s not particularly expensive. The pub is gorgeous too, anything you expect from an old Engligh pub. Except the Thai food, of course! On the down side, twice I have been there, twice I had to give back my pint. Not a good place for Real Ale lovers.Excelente cocina Thailandesa a un precio muy razonable, y a solo 10 minutos de Oxford (no muy accesible si no tienes coche). El pub es realmente bonito, además, muy bien conservado y acogedor. El personal es muy atento y hará lo posible para que tengas una buena experiencia. No saben cómo conservar en buen estado la cerveza inglesa, pero no creo que eso sea un problema para el público español.

This is a first time we've visited this pub in the evening but the food was just as good though more expensive than the quickie lunch. We had a set meal and the staff swapped one of the dishes with no fuss. The mixed starter was super and the Thai man did super service though there was a young girl who needs more training- she brought the wrong food, didn't know what she was delivering when she brought the right food and tried to clear too early. This didn't interfere with our lovely meal though. Well done all.

Sunday night and busy as always. A famous West Indian cricketer (GG) was in with family and friends and the atmosphere was very good for a Sunday evening. Service and food excellent as usual.Thai Curry and weeping Tiger (strips of steak on a skillet) were very good. They also usually have a t least two real ales on draft which is always a plus point.What I love is if you are in a rush they speed things up and if you have time and tell them so things go at your own pace. We have been here many times and as a local restaurant you cannot beat it.Keep up the good work and we will keep returning.

This place is always good. The take-aways are good too. We popped in here last night for a meal and were not disappointed. Er indoors had green curry (chicken) and I had the chicken pad Thai. We shared a mixed starter for two. I had a half of Bitter and her highness had a large lime & soda. All of it was good as was the service. The bill came to a few pence over £30. If I had to be very picky I would say that the green curry was slightly thin (watery) and the cabbage in the pad Thai was past its prime. These minor things were not enough to affect our enjoyment of the meal and all of the other diners seemed to be enjoying their meals too. It's advisable to book a table most times. I. use phone or email for this and takeaway.

The duck curry is absolutely delicious. Pad Thai is really good, especially with prawns. The service is good and friendly - Good wine and beer choice.

I'm not sure whether we just went on the wrong day because the other reviews for this restaurant don't seem to have had the same problem as us - but we had absolutely appalling service at this restaurant. The staff were polite and friendly, but very very slow. It took half an hour for them to take our drinks/starters order, and after finishing our starters, another hour until we received our main. It was only when I went up and asked whether they had started cooking it yet because we had to leave, that they hurried up and said it wouldn't be a moment. I was very very disappointed by the service but nonetheless, the food was INCREDIBLE. Best Thai food I have ever tasted by far, and if this was just a glitchy day with service I would return in an instant.

I lunch here one a month and the standard of food never varies, it is always excellent. I normally start with chicken satay, followed by green thai chicken curry or sweet & sour prawns, both are very good. The set two course lunch is outstanding value at £7.50 per person

Booked for 7pm, sat straight down but after 20 mins still hadn't been offered a drink very very busy with only 2 front of house staff they must of known it would be busy on a bank holiday weekend,had to go to bar myself to order drinks lady said we will be over waited another 10 mins for someone to come over even had to ask for Thai crackers which are normally given to you straight away,but can't knock the food lovely as ever but please don't accept the bookings if you haven't got the staff to cope.

The White Horse is small and we didn't know when we went in it was a Thai restaurant, we had a drink first and then tried the food as a second thought - so glad we did. Went for the 2 course £7.50 special which was worth every penny. Lovely fresh crispy veggie spring rolls then we shared a veggie green curry and the veggie Pad Thai - both were excellent, flavoursome and served in an appealing fashion. Green curry was packed with flavour, good mix of vegetables and tofu, I would recommend for couples or small parties - staff were courteous and helpful. Nice wine and beer selection on top.

Never had a bad meal, charming young waiter who nothing is to much trouble for, we eat here regularly and have watched this young man grow in confidence. We recommend this restaurant to all our friends and we will certainly carry on eating here!

Have been up to Forrest Hill and the White Horse a few times this year already, nice cosy fire and good service, but we are only here for the tasty thai food, see the menu on the web site, good selection and good prices. I can see we will be back again soon.

Revisiting after a few years & a bit disappointing. No prawn crackers, unchilled white wine & our meal got off to a very bad start by the defensive rude manager. What a shame as we were looking forward to our meal out! Green curry rather bland. Food okay but after the abuse we received we will not return.

Don't go by the trip advisor map, why they don't check these things I don't know, Forrest Hill is just north of the A40 just east of Oxford, see Google.As title, great Thai food (some european dishes as well) cosy, warm pub, good beer, service and great Thai food. Easy to find as well.

I really recommend this pub/restaurant! Why?Firstly, it has a really warm cozy old atmosphere of a country pubIt is clearly loved by the locals with kind staff.The food is delicious! My brother and I had Tom yum soup and Thai green curry. He said it was very good, and he knows, having spent time in Thai land!The food was really good value. Really refreshing to have tasty, honest food at affordable prices. No over-fancy gastro, retro pub here!Lastly, this is for you, Oxford locals: We walked to the pub in Forest Hill, through Shotover Park and Shotover estate. A lovely 2 hour max walk! Then you get the reward of this scrumptious Thai lunch on arrival. You can then get the 108 bus back to town.

Me and my fiancee visited this resturant with her nan and gramp when we lived in the village. It is in a very nice location, and the whole place is warm and cosy. The food was amazing! Staff, great too!

We visited as a family of six on a Friday evening, we only booked the night before so having not been before did not know what to expect although the majority of the reviews we very positive. We arrived at approx 7.10 pm in readiness for a 7.15pm booking, we were surprised how cosy and busy it was, a smallish pub split into two one side as a restaurant and the other side as the pub with the bar. There was one table for six remaking in the restaurant side and we we shown to our table.Drinks and food ordered form an interesting menu made up of a la carte and set menus between us we had a mixture of orders. The starters arrived and we all taken aback how good the presentation was, as was the food, similarly with the main course. We were regularly asked by staff if more drinks we required. The final pleasant surprise was the bill - very reasonable for the food, presentation and service that we enjoyed. All six of our party agreed we would all return in the near future ...... A hidden gem ... Please don't get too popular !!,
