Incomprehensible drinks menu which appears to have killed off local trade. Indifferent and very limited food menu, overpriced. The new landlords are hopeless, with recent events including a 'b***h raffle'! Not really the vibe to attract discerning punters.

We stayed at a cottage near this pub and what a find it was. Greeted by Mick the landlord who offered to come and pick us up from the cottage and bring us back so we could come and see a band playing there on the Saturday night. I had a few ciders and my husband enjoyed the beer on offer. We have heard that Mick is leaving the pub. This is such a shame because he is doing a great job. We arrived after they had finished serving food but Mick offered to make us some sandwiches and the ham was delicious. Will definitely be back for Eddyfest.

Four of us attended for an evening meal. Very friendly staff. This is a spit and sawdust country pub, but don't let that put you off. My husband and I stayed at the White horse Caravan park the weekend, 6th and 7th October 2017. Having stayed here a few years ago I was very disappointed with the state of the facilities. In the ladies toilet there was a very dirty, smelly and blocked toilet, no toilet paper, filthy sinks and floor. It didn't look like it had been cleaned in a long time. The men's were no better. The shower looked like I would come out dirtier than before I went in! I cleaned both the ladies and men's toilets with the resources I had to hand in the caravan and put a loo roll in each. I used a whole bottle of bleach and packet of antibac wipes, something I feel I should not have done. I am sad to say that there was no thiught to provide even the most basic of facilities. A family arrived just after I had cleaned things and our friends who we had recommended this place to, arrived soon after. As you can appreciate this was not the start to some relaxing down time with our friends after a hard week at work we expected. Embarrassing is not the word! I am afraid also to say that the toilet facilities in the pub are not really very clean either. Some other of our friends had one of the cottages for the weekend. This was not too clean either and looked very tired and in need of some new furniture. Behind the cottage had someone's washing on the line, all sorts of rubbish in clear view and the following morning someone was behind it being something which meant that privacy was clearly not respected. The whole area needed the grass cutting and some care spending on the whole place. However the beer was good. The six of us decided to dine in the restaurant and had a laughable experience! We had booked for 7.45pm at arrived at 7.30pm. It took a while to get a drink served. We were told where we were sitting rather than shown. We waited for menus for over 20 minutes then one of us went to the bar where we were given 2 menus between 6 of us. None came to take our order so once again we had to go and ask if someone could. The starters were lovely but we were all very hungry by the time they arrived at just gone 9pm. Our mains were also very nice. During the course of our meal the lights went out twice in the area we were in and no one came to ask if we would like more drinks. Some of us wanted a dessert but were told that the chef had gone home so we were not able to have any! At the end of the meal we were told that the mangers were on holiday. The following day we decided to try again and had a very different experience, good service and one again did have good food. Overall we enjoyed the meals.

Booked for a 2pm Sunday lunch, on arrival the bar staff had no idea where our table was and finally waved us to the bottom of the pub. On finding our table we were pleased to be next to the fire as it wasn't very warm. However no one attended the fire and it went out. On looking at the menu and making our choices we were disappointed to find out that they had no soup. So we decided to skip starters. Main course when it arrived was nice but took a long time to appear. We asked for the desert menu which no one bought to us, my other half went and found it as we were fed up of waiting. Finally they took our order for puddings which also took forever to arrive. In summary, the food was ok but service terribly slow.

This used to be one of my favourite places to eat in the area. In 2015 I reviewed it very positively. We used to eat here a lot but in the last few months we had heard some less than glowing reports from friends and family so we hadn't been for some time. However recently we decided to give it another go. Sadly we were somewhat disappointed. Firstly we were told there were only a couple of tables left that were not reserved even though the pub was almost empty. So we sat in the end room, which normally would be fine however nobody had bothered to light the fire (there was a fire going in the other part of the pub, however all tables were reserved apparently.) On a February evening it was pretty freezing to be sitting in that end room with no fire going, and we overheard other customers mention how cold it was. This seems like a basic oversight on the part of the staff - please try to think about your customers and how comfortable they are. Secondly I was disheartened when I looked at the menu. The blackboard used to be crammed full of mouthwatering dishes boasting locally sourced products. This time we were given a small paper menu which was very limited and basic. Normally I would be excited by the menu and struggle to decide between all the delicious sounding dishes. This time I struggled to find anything that appealed. Bangers and mash, chicken and chips, etc. Fine if you want a very basic bland pub meal but the whole point of going out for dinner is to enjoy the experience and eat a meal you wouldn't normally cook at home, a treat for the tastbuds so to speak. It is a real shame that the previous chef has left as The White Horse has now become just a bog standard pub serving average pub food. Would we come again? For a drink, yes (If the fire was lit). For food, no. Sorry to say but it is not what it once was.

The cider festival was fantastic - with flavours for every pallet. In the kitchen was the hardest working chef I'd every seen making sure the bonfire night food and Sunday lunch food were 5* regardless of how busy he was. To top the experience off, the live band 'Harry Slater Band' performed music for every taste. The facility was immaculate and location was tranquil. I stayed last weekend in one of the two little self contained log cabins at the White Horse. This was a treat for myself and my children from my mother who took us after she had visited and stayed a few years ago. Although we found the cabin to be comfortable enough we did feel that it was shabby, not chic (well worn e.g the chair was torn, drawers broken in one room and the window in the bunk room would not stay open) and the whole place needed a thorough clean as there was dust and cobwebs throughout. Bedding appeared clean but lacked that 'fresh' smell. The shower in the wet room sprayed everywhere except on the intended target and the temperature could not be regulated so we were unable to shower the children who would have been scolded. The quality of this cabin certainly did not reflect the £80 per night fee. Such a shame as it wouldn't take much to make this a great little place to stay in a really beautiful area of the country.

We had visited this lovely country pub a few times before but never eaten here, online the pictures of the food are fantastic and make you want to visit and try out the cuisine, but not so in real life!!!!! it was rare that we could get a table too with it being popular for food, apart for this one evening when we turned up 10 mins before 9 pm when they stop serving and said yes we could still have food. There wasn't much choice on the menu so we ordered steak which sounded nice as we were hungry, when it came the presentation was terrible the salad was just chopped lettuce no tomatoes and no cucumber and was dumped on the side of the plate? Steak was tough and full of fat nice touch with a hidden mushroom under a large baked tomato, chips weren't the best either? Not sure if it is under new management but if so think the food side needs some finesse, as it was a bog standard meal and it was too expensive for what we got on our plate!!! service was very welcoming and friendly by the waitress, good selection of ales.

I am quite torn in writing this review because based on my experience I would have given it 0 stars but my experience was ruined by the other people staying at the site and not really a reflection of the place itself. The pub itself has lots of character and has a good range of beers and ciders and the restaurant in particular is a lovely place to enjoy a meal. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his steak but mine was tough but I put that down to luck because otherwise the meal was ok.Camping on the other hand was an awful experience, so bad in fact that we had paid in advance for two nights but left after one and this was due to a large group of middle-aged parents of children whose age ranged from about 4 - 12 years of age. I mention the parents age because you'd think they'd know better. The children were the loudest group of children I have ever come across, they screamed and shouted throughout the day and evening and at about 10pm they decided to treat the entire camp to their own hideous version of X - Factor as they screeched their way through their Ipod playlist while their parents sat around drinking and chatting, seemingly oblivious to the racket of their little darlings. Eventually at midnight when I was returning from a trip to the toilet block one of the mothers asked if the children were being a bit loud and should they bring them inside? The complete lack of awareness and regard for other campers amazed me and not wishing to experience the torture for a second night we left first thing in the morning to find another camp. Such a shame really because the pub and site seemed ok but I wouldn't return just in case the children and their parents are regulars.

We re-visited what had been our favourite pub restaurant and were a bit disappointed to see that the menu had completely changed since our last visit, to offer more general 'pub grub', rather than the fine dining experience of earlier times. We decided to still have something to eat and had a very pleasant beef cobbler, with a beautiful light 'cobbler' topping. If you had never been to the White Horse before, I think you would feel that you had had a good meal for a reasonable price and be quite content. However, if you were coming for the wonderful gastronomic pleasures of a meal prepared by the last chef, you will find things a little different...

I visited here with a party of 6 for Sunday lunch, and it was a good choice. The building seems quite odd and mixed up, but the staff were very friendly and welcoming. The room we ate in was bright and welcoming, and the bar area is more cosy.I had the beef roast, and it was some of the best gravy I've had, and there was plenty of it. Beef was perfect, and the veg was just right too. Others in the party had beef cobbler, which was apparently good. They had a few choices for the vegetarians, which was not bad for a smallish menu.Prices were pretty reasonable. I was sad not to try one of the many beers and ciders (driving), as they looked interesting. Sadly I don't live locally, but I'd come back if I was in the area.

I used to be a big fan of the White Horse and often ate there with the family and friends but the quality of the food and cooking went downhill in the middle of last year sometime; I persevered a few times but although it was still a good pub the food was poor and the spark had become diminished.Anyway to cut a long story short I bumped into a friend who mentioned that things had improved, so my partner and I decided to give the pub another chance. The menu looks similar to the previous one although none of the bar staff on duty were the same as before which was a shame as there was not a lot of energy behind the bar. We ordered our food, a rump steak for me and a veggie burger for my partner which came fairly promptly. My steak looked like it had been hacked into a shape that was reminisant of one of the shapes in a Tetris game, all right angles. I sliced into the steak, well sort of ripped it with a steak knife as it was a tough piece of meat to find it was cooked to a medium, not the rare I had requested, so two disappointments in the first 10 seconds, I thought about complaining but as a large party of 15 turned up to order food I thought I would end up waiting all night for a replacement if I did, so ploughed on. To be fair it was fairly tasty but tough. The steak comes with a mushroom half a grilled tomato and some chips. The chips were of the cut up with their skins on variety rather than proper chipped potatoes, the type that verge on being mini wedges. On both plates, they were over cooked to a rather unappealing brown colour and burnt around the edges. My partners veggie burger was apparently very dry and had so much garlic in it that it was obvious to everyone within a metre that she had eaten garlic even the following morning. In summary then it was a meal I would have been embarrassed to serve at home, it felt like it had been cooked by someone who didn’t really care that much. It’s a shame because I like the pub a lot and had hoped the new owners would be able to maintain its reputation, I wish them well but this visit failed to convince me and since I have to drive to get to the pub without reasonable food there is less reason to go.

Oh no ... my favourite pub ... what has happened?! We visit regularly during our monthly visits to Suffolk to enjoy delicious food, lovely staff and even lovelier own brewed beer ... and it's all gone! A very limited/average menu with just a hint of the remains of the previous and very talented chef, standard drink choices and no friendly warm welcome. My husband and I are gutted! Fingers crossed it turns around again - SOON!

Found this pub on trip advisor whilst driving around Suffolk on a cold wet spring Saturday, the reviews were good so stopped for a warming lunch. We didn't want a full blown meal so went for the leek and potato soup, the taste was very nice but warming it wasn't, it was virtually cold we like to have bread with our soup but they could only offer white bloomer no brown or granary options. My wife had one of the special beers and evidently it was delicious. If you are near the pub I would say it is worth a visit but I wouldn't go out of my way to go back.

We were made welcome and served without any problems , the food was excellent, the steaks mouthwatering and cooked to perfection, the Burgers were a meal in themselves! I have to take my hat off to the management team for a slickly run operation with a great chef at the heart of the Kitchen, I would strongly recommend and I would advise to phone and make a reservation, for a great family evening out. Many thanks

This pub has a talented chef with the ability to produce an interesting menu. It is a great pity the the brewery has now stopped making their beers that were a feature of this pub. I only hope that this does not affect the popularity.

I have just come back from an amazing lunch with my mother and family. The food was fantastic as well as the service. I went for fish today and the Haddock Fritters to start with were beautiful. The food was presented lovely and you could tell it was all homemade. The sea Bass for my main was so light and delicate at the artichoke purée was just perfect. My father is quite an awkward eater but they was so accommodating with his needs. All the tables were full and you could see everyone was enjoying their meals. The pub is quite hard to find but well worth it. I can't wait to go back to sample the rest of the menu. The rest of my party had roasts and these came out on lovely plates, the beef was so tender.

Visited on Mothers Day and booked in advance. We had a wheelchair user in our group and the landlord could not have been more helpful giving us a great table and opening the garden doors. The food was perfectly presented and tasted amazing. I had the wood pigeon followed by the beef and both were outstanding. I was so full from the meal but the dessert selection was so tempting I just had to try one. The peanut and banana bread pudding was so light and not at all stodgy and the ice cream was lovely. Absolutely fabulous meal and I will be back and I will be happy to recommend to my friends.

Have just eaten here for a weekday lunch treat. Had the Pull a Pig Apart and Beef Brisket burger, needless to say the food was sublime! Starters were wood pigeon and black pudding and egg...equally as delicious!! Service was a little slow to begin with but this may be due to it being midweek and the restaurant had a few tables on the go. Dessert consisted of Banana and Peanut bread pudding, and chocolate done with raspberry sorbet. Mmm mmmWill definitely be back!! Don't miss out!!

One of our favourite places for good hearty food that is well sourced and well presented. Four of us all had delicious meals on our last visit and were not disappointed. If you sit in the bar area it is cosy and ideal for larger groups in dining part. Only improvement would be toilets updating as they are old and tired.

Spent a Saturday evening at the White Horse. An old time real Ale pub that brews it's own ale and serves up fantastic food. All the ingredients are locally sourced with lots of "Game" dishes on the menu. The food really was excellent, with good sized portions and faultless presentation. Friendly efficient staff made the visit a great experience. Will definitely visit again.

A step back in time into a Real Ale pub. The rooms, table and chairs transport you back to what it must have been like 40-50 years ago and made a welcome change from modern village pubs. The menu was varied with home cooking and locally sourced meat and vegetables, and was served attractively presented. Couldn't fault the food and the service was good and the Beer, brewed on the premises, made a welcome change. Only gripe was that we ordered apple pie and custard for our desert and the waitress had to come back and say sorry but they hadn't enough milk to make the custard and that we could have ice cream or cream. I find it hard to believe that a pub can run out of milk!! I joked with the waitress that if we returned for a meal I would bring my own packet of custard powder just in case.

We went for lunch with a friend today - we had been telling her how wonderful it was at the White Horse and were a bit worried that it might not live up to the hype, but we needn't have been bothered. The food is beautifully prepared, the portion sizes are big enough to satisfy a hearty appetite, and the taste, well, what can I say? If you haven't been, you must try it! We had the pork, which was fabulous, highly recommended. The fish was wonderful too. The starters were a delight and the desserts... What can I say?

I guess this pub is today very much as it has been for many, many years. Wooden floorboards and none of the trappings that are associated with modern public houses, except of course, some things must be kept up to date. That said, the places oozes atmosphere and combined with a very tasty 'in house' pint and a plate of rabbit & red wine risotto, our first visit the other lunchtime, will not be the last.

We visited on New Years Day which was the 3rd time we have been to this little gem in Suffolk. It's a lovely little pub with a great menu of locally sourced food and locally brewed beer. When I say local, I mean a few meters away for both - veggies are often grown in their garden and the award winning Mill Green brewery provide some of the beers on offer. All of which are lovely. We have eaten there twice and both times the food has been excellent. Even on NYD when they said they had a large party coming in they found a table for us and turned our order around quickly - we were lucky as we ordered 15 mins before the large group arrived. My only small complaint was it was freezing in there on NYD. We have been lucky enough previously to sit by 1 of the 2 open fires they have, but this time we were tucked in a corner next to the bar and so the jackets remained on for the first 30 mins (at least) while we thawed out. This won't stop me from coming back for a 4th visit next time we are in Suffolk - I love it and would recommend it to anyone.

We were in the area and after reading good reviews on trip advisor we decided to pay a visit. As it was 2.30pm we rang in advance to check they were still serving and headed straight there. However once we were inside we were informed that they had just fed a large party and didn't have any food left apart from scampi and chips! When asked if there was anything else we were offered ham, egg and chips. Given the time we stayed and both had scampi which was fine but sadly nothing special. When my husband asked for a dessert he was told they had none left, but when I asked another member of staff we were told he could have spotted dick, just not with custard. Oh and also when I ordered a glass of wine at the bar I was told I could have a glass of any of the wines on the menu, however this wasn't mentioned to my husband when he later went to order a glass and consequentially didn't order one. I appreciate that the focus was on the large party but really we should have been told this when we called and we wouldn't have gone there for lunch! Overall a disappointment!

Went on a Saturday night, having last been a few years back. Roaring fires and a friendly welcome with a pint of their own bitter makes up for the remote, out of the way location, on a damp December evening. But the food was a let down. Mackerel pate came with a solid jellied top and the accompanying bread was drenched in olive oil. The classic burger was inedible due to being very over-seasoned with pepper. The majority of my main course went back untouched. Little effort was made to redress. Turkey of the Christmas menu looked the part but ŵas described as dry. Wines were good and reasonably priced. But I'd be cautious about revisiting given such a poor experience.

One of the relatively few un-mucked about with pubs in the area, the White Horse treads exactly the right line between spit and sawdust (and microbrewed beer) on the one hand and great locally sourced pub food with a twist on the other. A couple of times a year they have great beer festivals (check out "Eddyfwest" with local bands) and with the campsite plus lovely villages to visit on the doorstep, it is a perfect local.

What more could you ask for? Firstly the food was delicious. It is obviously well thought out and there’s clearly no flinging in the microwave going on here . Secondly, the pub itself is a wonderful example of an unspoilt country pub with log fires and an array of interesting pictures and prints on the walls. And finally, perhaps also most importantly for the group I was with, the beer choice was excellent. As a group we tried all of the available Mill Green beers (they brew these on site in an eco friendly setup!) There were several to choose from, and we liked the lot. Which is rare us! Although to be fair, my friend (being a dark ale man) purred over the Sherburne Street Stout and hogged it a little. For the rest of us, there was a White Horse Bitter (named after the pub) and several interesting examples of hoppy pale beers. All in all we all thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Keep it up Edwardstone White Horse, we love your food your pub and your beer 

We have just returned from an excellent 3 course "Travelzoo offer" lunch at the White Horse tucked away in the wilds of Suffolk. It was absolutely excellent, different from the normal pub menu and for this writer more generous than she could cope with (the others coped fine!) My excellent pea soup was followed by wonderful stuffed cannelloni smothered with cheese sauce, I would have liked to have tried the sweets but had to settle for ice cream. A venison dish and a rabbit dish were chosen by the others. Our friends are "foodies" and they will be returning - with their friends. There is also beer from the brewery next door - what more to wish for? Yes, it is out of the way but, as the Michelin guide says - well worth the journey.

We chose a Saturday night in the off chance they had a table.. The pub itself has a great homey feel to it with great attentive staff. Unfortunately as it was band night the only table left was in the same room next to them. It was a very small room with over sized speakers and drums. Not the pubs fault but was really far to noisey that close! We were moved when a table became available..we did chose to sit next to the band so no complaints although two pre booked tables were not so happy.Food wise they are know for there 'pull a pig apart' dish which sounds and looks amazing..the menu is large and reads well. I chose the roasted rabbit with curried lentils and sweet potato with guava or some other fruit. My wife chose that cannelloni. My rabbit was a let down..a single roasted leg of rabbit..lentils were nice ..the sweet potato was very sweet and not pleasant. Personally the rabbit portion was mean..and leg is not conducive to being the star element as they tend to be tougher and sinewy..this was the case. What happened to the breast and offal? Given the pulled pig..I was expecting the same attention to the rabbit.. Do they just serve portions so I was unlucky as only the leg was left? The cannelloni was large with well dressed salad..it was enjoyed by my wife and the portion I had was good although not sure red cheddar is authentic...We would go back but would choose different dishes and probably the pork...and def not on band night!

I bought a Travelzoo voucher to eat at the White Horse. We had never explored that area outside of Sudbury before - it's beautiful - so decided to go for lunch on Wednesday. The pub itself is very old-fashioned inside, but in a proper, old school way, not pastiche olde worlde. The menu on the board gave an indication that food is taken seriously here, with a varied, not stupidly long, selection including many locally sourced ingredients. My starter of goat's cheese cheesecake was an indicator of what was to come: three tiny and perfect cheesecakes served with a beautiful relish - exquisite. My partner pronounced his duck salad to be perfect. That main courses were both fabulous, though I would urge you to only have the forager burger if you are really hungry! The chips, oh the chips! Just as you would want them to be. However, my dessert was the absolute star of the show. I had what was called Apple Blossom, which consisted of a small pastry tart, topped with apple slices arranged to look like a flower, served with small pearls of fresh apple, apple purée and apple jelly. There was also a dusting of what tasted like hazelnuts under the most wonderful fruity sorbet/ice cream. My partner's dessert was also delightful, a very special lemon tart, with a little macaron and a creamy sorbet. The service was lovely, the young bar person who served our food also lit the wood burner for us, and was very friendly. We will definitely return, even if we have to pay full price next time! I urge anyone who finds themselves within a 50 mile radius to visit. It apparently gets very booked in the evenings, but lunchtime is much easier.

So few pubs manage the balance between being somewhere you want to drink while still offering high quality food - most having unfortunately tipped into the banality of feeling too much like a restaurant. The White Horse is a good-looking local pub with a few rough edges (a good thing in my book) offering consistently good food made from high quality ingredients (the owner is a farmer, I believe). The beers from the on-site brewery are fantastic, and even though we're not especially local, we go out of our way to come back every so often, whether it's for a drink or a drink plus food.I'd advise booking - the kitchen's quite small and I think they have to limit the number of meals they can serve.
