Visited for sunday lunch, having not been in here since it was refurbed. The refurb is pretty poor, there was a just a sheet hanging in one door way. Random bits of the ceiling not quite finished. Some strange plywood walls, and given the rest of the decor, cant decide if it's meant to be there or just unfinished. Its definitely lost that country pub feel. Just all feels very cheap. Service was ok. Sadly only 2 lagers on. Given a list of food that is unavailable. When the food does arrive, it's fairly cold. The spring roll starter was incredibly poor, just hollow. The roast dinner is mainly a plate of peas! And the children's sausage and mash that supposedly comes with peas is mainly cabbage. All rather tasteless and bland. Extremely overpriced for the quality of the food they are producing. Got charged for both kids meal even though they supposedly eat free on sundays. But we was so let down and just wanted to leave and couldn't be bother to argue it. We will not be back

Service is an absolute disgrace. Waitresses are rude and stand around talking rather then serving customers. Very long wait for food which tasted awful. Roast potatoes tastes like they had been recooked in a fat fryer and very hard. Very over priced. Will not be returning and definitely not recommending to anyone.

Such a shame, I had high expectations of this pub, but was sadly disappointed. The service was awful it took an age to be served our drinks and had to wait over an hour for our food which came out overcooked and beef burger tasting of fish.....

We were looking forward to having a meal out with our family, we tried to book and it took 4 attempts to receive a confirmation of our reservation. We arrived to find that they had a block booking in for dinner and we were NOT on their reservations for the evening, their excuse was they used serval social platforms to confirm bookings, they apologised but said they would ask the chef to fit us in but there would be a very long wait.So I cannot review their food but their service is absolutely awful, we really wanted to support a local business, especially in these strange times and in what is a struggling sector. We will not be going back again!

While the young girls serving here are very nice and helpful the management is somewhat lacking. Food had to be sent back but we were made to feel that this was us being picky rather than the food not being good enough. Quite pricey for a local pub and new interior is not as impressive as we were anticipating. Weird chipboard panels stuck to walls and a 'dust catcher' ceiling arrangement. Food is OK. Advertised offers seem to not be available when the bill comes. Won't be rushing back.

Over cooked meals x 2 children x3 adults 1 child’s meal good the other burntX2 adult meals burnt and sent backThe other was poor Such a shame as came here with a friend few weeks before and as a newly renovated place we was impressed. Sadly second visit this time we had a shocking experience. To the point the young lady said she was not charging for the burnt meals and we was offered another meal to be cooked. This was the least that could be offered for us but by the time it then came I had lost my appetite and so had my friend it was very embarrassing as she was staying with us from west York’s. We both had to choose something else on my menu we didn’t really fancy but felt had no choice as couldn’t risk 2 more burnt lasagnes which were dry and inedible! Really very dissatisfied such a shame. Topped it off also as we was the only table in the restaurant then there was a couple came in after us prob about 20 mins, they got there food first! We noticed they had ordered sea bass so my husband presumed our food was burnt as the chef was distracted by his fish meal. To make matters worse when my husband went up to pay which should have been straightforward We should have only been paying for 1 adult and 1 child and few drinks Due to the fact 2 adult meals not been charged and my daughters child’s lasagne was not sent back however it was also burnt but she is 5 and would not have waited which is understandable she ate some and her chips They then added all meals to the bill and had to be told to take off the burnt meals!!

The original White Horse had a querky twist on a traditional English pub. It had a large range of real ales and a menu filled with good home cooking and evening specials. The latest fixed menu has a range of pies, burgers and steaks more typical of a hotel restaurant. On the night we visited many of the items listed eg the sea bass and 3 of the 5 types of pies were unavailable I found the new owners attempts to redesign the interior disappointing. They have painted the traditional brickwork a sort of silver gold gloss paint and stuck cheap chipboard and woodwork on the walls and ceiling. Modern it may be but tasteful it isn’t.The staff were friendly and served us with a smile but the service was slow and the tables had remnants of last nights dinner on them. This was not enough to complain or to put us off completely but was not inviting. The food served was good but not excellent. It was let down by care in preparation eg the mashed potato was not hot and the fish chips and peas did not come with peas. This was quickly corrected but was mildly irritating but again not enough to complainI personally did not enjoy the background music - mainly because it was not in the background. A single Sonos speaker set at a volume to fill the large room was very intrusive for the tables set close to it. Having the Human League interrupting our conversation throughout the meal was not a pleasant experience.Overall I would rate the restaurant as not yet good enough

I was staying in Ridgewell so was happy to wait for the Thursday evening when this restaurant opened to make the most of the amazing menu.We had seen that there was a 45 ounce Tomahawk on the menu and I shared it with my hungry teenage daughter. The quality of the food was absolutely fantastic and it is clear that the chef is very skilled. My son ate a delicious Social Burger and my wife really enjoyed a large prawn cocktail (with the best bits of our steak). Have eaten at this pub for several years & had always found the food, beer & hospitality excellent & the pricing very good value. We have taken several friends there over the years who have also reciprocated by then taking other friends there, so obviously it ranked very high with us all.We were very disappointed to learn that over the lockdown the White Horse had closed / changed ownership & had phoned several times to determine the new opening plans. Unfortunately, it appeared at that time that the new owners plans were to go 'up market' & that this friendly good value pub would no longer be the pub we knew.Last Wednesday, purely by chance we decided to take a ride over to Ridgewell to see if the pub was open & generally check it out for a potential future return..What a surprise we had.....the pub was open & had been tastefully renovated (which was almost complete) & showed changes to the eating outside options & significant changes to the bars & dining area. Whilst business was fairly quiet we had the opportunity to have a good chat with Aron (owner) who explained that the original dining plan / concept hadn't materialised to well & that menus were to be rejigged to align with 'local pub'expectations & that they had now varied their meal options considerably to cater for a 'over 60's value menu', a lunchtime snack menu & the traditional pie & fish & chip nights similar to that provided by Robin pre lockdown. This was very good news to us.....as it appeared that the new management team had identified the heritage needs of a country pub & that hopefully we had a good venue to return to once again. We took the opportunity to sample the beer (good variety & guest ales) & an excellent steak sandwich snack as recommended by Aron. Very nice indeed!!We eagerly look forward to the new menus coming out shortly & returning to this cosy venue with friends again post the lifting of Covid restrictions later in July.Good luck with your 're-opening' next week & the introduction of the revised menus.Well done you for identifying the need to retain the local pub concept & provide the menu variation accordingly. We really look forward to returning regularly soon.

And I can’t not explain how greatful I am to the staff at the Whitehorse ridgewell, for making my night so special. Not only the decor within the dome was decorated so beautifully but the food was out of this world! The tomahawk steak was honestly to die for! Cooked absolutely perfectly with a range of sides to top it all off. I want to say a massive thank you to the chef and all of the staff that the Whitehorse for making it a birthday to remember!

I've been to the Sudbury social eating house a few times, and loved it. We went to the Ridgewell one as it was outdoor dining only. When we first arrived we were nervous as we'd been sat at the back of the garden, and it was cold and there was a couple of tables smoking which was blowing our way. However, we asked to be moved, and despite it being incredibly busy, they set us up a new table, brought over a heater and umbrella, as well as blankets and hot water bottles, all without making a scene. All the staff are so friendly, and chatty. The food is incredible, so good that we ordered a second round of dishes. Great cocktails too. We feel so lucky to have this restaurant near by!

MORE AT TripAdvisor

I've been a regular at this pub for some 15 years, and while I was surprised to see a change being rung, I was rather excited to see what came next. Following the lifting of Covid restrictions I gave it some time before visiting as I thought it may be busy. I also knew (from the lively social media posts) that some internal building work was still going on and that food could only be consumed outdoors. In short, I booked a lunch today with my coat on and my mind wide open. The photos on social media showed lots of happy people sat at tables equipped with built-in fire pits. That's a good idea, I thought. Maybe I won't need my coat after all.I booked over the phone a few days ago to be told that Saturday was 'our busiest day', but that there was a table. That's lucky, I thought. Four of us arrived this afternoon to find the place devoid of a single customer and largely deserted by any human beings at all. Negotiating my way through the empty building (site) I eventually bumped into someone who told me I could take a seat under a gazebo. It would be the last I saw of him.Sure enough, there was a nice long table with a fire pit. A young girl appeared with some photocopied menus and asked for our drinks order. Only wine was on the menu, so she read out the other drinks from the back of her notepad. Suffice to say, there wasn't a great selection. The menu was also something of a surprise. Although there wasn't a great deal printed on it, it took some time to understand. A line saying something about combining four dishes to make a two-course meal threw us a bit. We asked the young girl to explain it, but she was clearly inexperienced and was having some difficulty understanding it herself. No problem, we said, but would you mind hooking up the fire pit to a gas bottle so we can keep warm? No problem, she said, I'll get someone to bring one for you.She returned with our drinks, one of which (an ale) looked a bit strange and tasted like it looked. We asked the young girl (who'd forgotten about the gas bottle) for a different kind of beer. There was a choice of two. At this stage, all we could say was that she was trying her best. She appeared a short while later with another beer and casually informed us that if we wanted the fire pit started, there was 'a minimum spend of £200' to get it going. You couldn't hear a pin drop because of all the gasps and shouting. The poor girl didn't know what to say and we sat there quite stunned by the revelation. This was the first pub meal we'd booked since 2020, and blimey, how things had changed.A quick call to another local pub (I'd love to name it here because it was wonderful, but I won't) secured us an indoor table. We informed the young girl that we'd be leaving after paying for our drinks. We then gave her a tip - mainly for fending for herself. At no point did anyone else come to her (or our) aid. The ridiculous fire pits remained unlit, the 'Social' White Horse's food uneaten, and we didn't need to get our coats because they were already zipped up.I get that this is a new venture. I also understand these are trying times. But if you're going to set up and promote a new business in a village pub as a 'social' thing, do the social thing and be sociable, i.e. come and talk to your customers. That is, after all, the very essence of being a 'pub' - whether you're trying to be Michelin-starred or not.

A group of us went to the white horse for dinner and cocktails. We originally booked a fire pit table but when we arrived we were told that it wasn’t possible to have the fire pit on as it was too windy. This was not a problem at all as these things can’t be helped. However, about an hour later all of the fire pit tables were put on so we were a bit unsure as to why we were told that we couldn’t use them. We waited 30 minutes for our first round of four drinks. Three out of four us had the duck pancakes and couldn’t eat them as they were way too salty, we told the general manager and he told us they were meant to be like that. Later in the evening the same manager came over with our last round of drinks and said ‘four cocktails to take away the saltiness of the duck’ we didn’t appreciate this sarcastic comment as nothing was done to resolve the problem. We couldn’t fault the waitress staff that were working as they did everything they could to make sure we were comfortable and warm. Overall, we were disappointed.

We called into The White Horse for lunch earlier in the month and were surprised to find on entering there was no sign at all that the UK is in the middle of a coronavirus pandemic. There were no posters advising how they are dealing with this issue, no social distancing signs, no hand sanitising stations and we were not asked for any contact information for tracing purposes. Although the tables are fairly well spaced there were customers sat drinking at the bar. The only slight nod to the issue was a small table with a bottle of hand sanitiser on it which we only noticed on our way back out of the pub.Although the food we had was good we couldn't believe the lack of adherence to the coronavirus safety rules.

Fairly standard pub grub, nice starter (black pudding fritters with sweet chilli sauce) and a good amount for main (fish pie and veg). Plenty of fish in the pie, which was nice but veg a bit bland. Looks like it wants to be 'olde worlde' inside and the front of the pub is pretty much so but the restaurant area not a huge amount of character. They are into their clocks, which adorned most walls and various surfaces and chimed at regular intervals!

I called to book a table for my mum (& dad) as a surprise as we never all get together, asking my brother, his fiance and their 10 year old son, along with bringing my 90 year old Nan. I booked the table for 3.30pm (this was the only time available for a group of our size) that was no problem we rearranged my Nan and Nephews food arrangements to suit them having a dinner at this particular time. We arrived early to ensure we were ready to sit down, the bar maid/waitress said would we like to have a drink in the bar as the table wasn't quite ready - 30 minutes later I had to ask the girl to ask the table to move due to another sitting, no restaurant/pub/hotel should take a relay if you are not prepared to ask the guest to move or let them know they have another sitting, i had a hungry 10 year old and 90 year old who was worried about taking medication and having indigestion. The girl took 10minutes to ask the table to move, after getting another member of staff to speak with the other guests, the table was then relayed and we were seated, at no point were we told there was no roast chicken or prawns for the starters until my guests started to order! This was embarrassing for me and worse for my brother whose son would not eat anything so could have a ham sandwich (not a great dinner for a child!!!) my Nan had soup and my mother who had pre-ordered via email as she had allergies found that the chef had not been told her choices and the roast chicken she had requested was not available as it had run out. At this point I asked whether we needed to order desserts as I didn't want my guests further disappointed when it came to the end. I feel more sorry for the staff that had to deal with customer complaints that day as the manager seemed uninterested behind the bar. The food itself starters okay, the sandwich was awful ham tasted funny, he ate crisp sandwiches, the roast was okay cauliflower cheese burnt/overcooked. desserts - chocolate mousse - all the shortbreads tasted as though they had been cooked in the oven with the roast beef or stored in the fridge with something, baileys cheesecake was good, crumble not great, bakewell tart okay. Such a disapointment which ruined my mums mothers day, my treat and pissed my brother off as he had to cook when he got home. Thanks for the great experience! Oh also your staff behind the bar especially the young girl I told to move the other guests was particularly snotty and rude after I had done so which... is not professional, no I left no tip and working in the industry if a place does a good job I would be kind enough to do so!

After getting our drinks from bar was taken to our table and given the menu. When waitress came to take our order all 4 of us chose prawns for starters. Was then informed only 1 portion left so decided to skip starters as didn't want to just look at 1 of us eating! Went on to order main course. 2 of us wanted roast chicken & the other two roast lamb. Then told there was no chicken. So had to chose another alternative main course. The menu was restrictive with just minimal basic choices. Adult Son ended up having fish & chips & I had roast beef. Neither what we really particularly wanted. We did not bother staying for dessert. Whilst I understand this was a busy day, my booking was accepted & when we ordered pre dinner drinks could've been told there was a reduced menu choice or when waitress took us to the table this wasn't mentioned until she actually took the order. Was very disappointing especially the attitude of landlord whose comment was they'd been so busy & "sorry we felt that way". No actual apology. Seems to me that too many people were booked in & insufficient amount of most popular food available. I have recently lost my husband and this was one of the first times I'd gone for a meal with my family without him & disappointed it wasn't what we were expecting.

The pies are amazing, trouble is, which one to choose! The location is on the A1017 on the left as you enter Ridgwell travelling from Halstead. Plenty of parking. They have tables, chairs and umbrellas to the front of the pub and a nice terrace at the rear - real sun traps in the hot weather. There is a lovely ambience whether you are just having a drink or dining. One of my favourite places to go!

Everything about this pub is welcoming, from the exposed beams to all the quaint 'nicnacs' decorated everywhere. It's the type of pub you'd love to have as your local. A drinkers pub at the front with high tables and a pleasant restaurant area to the rear. Staff were all friendly and service very efficient. Good selection of wines and ales including Prosecco by the glass which is always a plus with me. I had the ribs & sweet potato fries but the stars of the menu are their home made pies. Delicious!

Beware of Sunday Lunches.....On Sunday my friend had roast beef - I had roast lamb. Barely any roast lamb on my plate, more roast beef on my friends. She could not eat it all, so veg and large slice of beef left on her plate.I asked for a doggy bag. When I got home I literally went to give it to my two labradors. Low and behold the large slice of roast beef missing ??????????????????????? Our early booking was clearly an advantage as I guess someone later ha my friends dusted down cleaned off slice of roast beef that we had paid for but did not get in our doggy bag.If they are that worried about running out of roast beef on a Sunday COOK more beef for your customers .............DIGUSTED..............................

We stopped here for a meal during a drive out. The service was not good. Everything took so long. We waited 40 minutes to get our food. However when the food arrived it was very good and great value for money. I must say that Chelsea, the young waitress was very helpful but the other waitress was slow and that is being polite. I think she had a preference for local people as she definitely enjoyed a chat with them rather than serve other people. A shame as I cannot rate it higher due to this.

When you enter the bar the first thing you see is the bar top that is made from old one penny coins, polished and set in a clear resin. Go through to the restaurant and it is laid out excellent with a fine collection of clocks around the walls. Very spacious and service was friendly and efficient. The Wednesday Pie Night offers a choice of 5 types of pie which are made from a light crumbly short crust pastry packed with meat and gravy. Selection of veg and potatoes with extra gravy, available although have never seen it needed. Full menu available if you can resist the pies. Very reasonable price for the excellent food offered.Accommodation available in separate units, but do not have details

In a group of 30 plus, having chosen the meal some weeks before, this is always a risk!We had eaten here before and had a great meal so we had high expectations. I had a smoked salmon starter, steak and ale pudding mail and a chocolate pecan tart dessert. It was an extraordinarily good meal which I enjoyed enormously particularly the steak pudding dish.I would had scored higher but for two things - others were disappointed with one or more dish (none who had chosen as I had) and one row was made up of four circular tables which made their experience less than ideal.I have no idea how a kitchen serves up hot great food to a large group but the White Horse succeeded! Oh and the staff were fabulous.

An evening drop in after house hunting nearby but what a find. Busy but we were seated within 20 minutes. My wife has the local asparagus - 10 minutes down the road and I had the Cromer crab, but I swear than there was the meat of more than one. We both had the chicken main course and were too full for desert. Handy - and honest wine tip from the waitress. if you are having two large glasses you may want to buy the whole bottle. If you dont drink it you can always take it home. Busy but not rushed.A find.

Four of us went to the White Horse pub at Ridgewell in Essex last Saturday and had the best steak ever. Normally when you have Sirloin it is tender but lacks the taste of Rump. I don't know what the chef puts on his Sirloin but it is very tender and the flavour is out of this world. I am a senior citizen and had many hundreds of steaks over my lifetime but the steak at The White Horse is out of this world. If you like a really good steak you must try it. I'm sure you won't be disappointed. The restaurant is very nice too with a nice log burner to make you feel at home.Staff are very friendly and helpful. All in all a great night out. Needless to say we will be going again very soon.

This is one of the best traditional pubs in East Anglia. The staff are very welcoming and the service is helpful and efficient. The pub itself has three bar areas although one is currently shut whilst the kitchens are being refurbished. The restaurant is large and quirky and full of interesting talking points such as a range of antique items and clocks. The beers available are sourced from small breweries both locally and nationally and are constantly changing and constantly high quality. The pub has (deservedly) been a CAMRA winner on a number of occasions. The food served is very good quality home-style cooking such as their excellent range of pies. During the week, they serve lunchtime specials with two or three courses for less than £11, whilst on Fridays fresh traditional cod, chips and peas in medium or large sizes are served for £3.95 or £5.95 - very competitively priced. The evening menu is extensive with a range of starters, salads, fish courses and main meals. The White Horse provides lodge-style accommodation which I am led to believe is good value for money although I have not stayed overnight. In summary this is a really great village pub but don’t tell anyone because we are trying to keep this little gem a secret

My wife were invited to Sunday lunch at The White Horse and duly arrived. We were seated and collected drinks from the bar. We made made polite conversation and waited for menus. Eventually we had to ask to see a menu. The orders were taken and we waited expectantly. The starters finally arrived - with one exception, mine; the other party members started but became increasingly embarrassed. I had to ask for my starter which had been missed off the order. It arrived with profuse apologies and tasted fine. The main courses arrived and in general were ok but not exceptional, the roast potatoes were undercooked and we had to ask for horseradish sauce. My wife's roast was a steamed chicken breast. One final point is that no one appeared to be overseeing the dining room, the girls serving were young and clearly had no formal training or focus. I think that the landlord may have been away. All in all a very disappointing affair.

After being told about a new offer at this pub we thought we would give it a try. We entered on a Thursday evening with a good amount of drinkers and diners. We were handed a menu that was £14.50 for 2 courses or £16.50 for 3 courses.Starters included French onion soup (which was stunning) Home made parfait (again stunning) or goats cheese salad. Mains included 8 oz Ribeye, Chicken, Rainbow Trout, or a veggie option. This was great value we ended up also having a pudding with the 3 course price including coffee. If you have not been there isn't a night that you wouldn't be disappointed.I feel this pub really is trying hard and deserves to be fully booked every night. There isn't a night when you should not visit. Mid week there is a lunch offer of 2 courses for £7.50. Wed and Thurs night as above. Friday night Medium fresh fish £3.50 and large for £5.95 both are great. Sunday lunch is not to be missed. Please don't be fooled by these good value prices, it is quality fresh food and great prices.

We have just had an excellent pub meal and have left satisfied by the food and reasonable cost. Even on a Wednesday evening there was a buzz about the place with a mixture of local drinkers and people eating (some of whom were also 'locals'!) that made for a pleasing atmosphere. Our food was hot, wholesome and good portions (medium fish and chips £6, gammon steak with 2 eggs, onion rings, tomato, mushrooms and chips - £10) and even the beer at £3 a pint was good value. We will frequent this establishment when hungry and looking for a reasonably priced meal.

Visiting The White Horse for a meal was a first time experience for my husband and me and one we definitely intend to repeat. It is a traditional village pub with great character. On arrival we were greeted by the friendly publican who showed us to our reserved table in the bar area near a blazing log fire, which was most welcome on a bitterly cold, wet evening. The menu offered a wide choice of starter and main courses of fresh, locally sourced produce which was cooked to order. All the food was cooked to perfection and offered exceptional value for money. I particularly enjoyed the tagliatelle pasta with Mediterranean vegetables in a tomato sauce. My husband declared his mussels in garlic butter sauce served with warm rolls to be the best he had ever tasted. The standard of cleanliness throughout the pub was very high. I was very impressed by the added touches, including furniture and mirrors at different heights in the ladies toilet, that showed so much consideration for the comfort of anyone using the facility. This friendly village free house serves a range of guest cask beers, has a large restaurant and newly built separate accommodation which, like the pub premises, is suitable for families with young children and people with disabilities and mobility difficulties. We would recommend The White Horse to everybody.
