The White Hart Hotel Restaurant in Braintree

We've stayed here before and enjoyed ourselves. The hotel is set right in the centre of Witham with plenty of shops and takeaways nearby. The building is an old coaching inn so a bit creaky and rickety but full of character. The room was well equipped, warm and the beds very comfortable. There always seems to be lots of staff around but they spend time talking between themselves than serving customers. It feels like the staff have a better time than guests. For example this morning on check out, three staff members were laughing about the Christmas lights. Two more were in the bar having personal conversations. Only the cleaner was working so I tried to give my keys to her. She looked puzzled so in the end I had to interrupt the staff discussion to find someone to give my key to. Breakfast can be hit and miss here. This time we didn't get what we ordered and had to send it back. We don't think the waiting on staff listen. Or it could be a kitchen problem as there's been a sign trying to recruit chefs and it's been on display for several years. This is a nice hotel spoilt by poor service. There are lots of staff that need better management. - The manager always sits right there in the bar with her computer so has lots of opportunity for monitoring and supervising staff.

I booked this hotel for a 3 night stay, what a mistake. I have received aggressive service from the staff, the food is appalling, lots of items on the menu "sold out". Breakfast was awful, cold coffee served, the beans were barely warm, when issues were reported to staff, the staff were rude back for the remainder of the stay, very unprofessional. They do not handle complaints very well at all, and act rather childishly, how is it the customers fault for bad food and service?! How are they still in business?! I'm genuinely shocked by their behaviour. I've checked some reviews online and shocked by the responses from the manager, clearly management supports bad service and staff. No doubt this post will be respond to in anger. The good reviews are probably curated by friends - I'm surprised anyone likes this place. Probably better service at Fawlty Towers, DO NOT STAY HERE, it is truly awful.

Fast, friendly service. Good menu choices and well presented, delicious food. A satisfying meal. Hope to go again very soon!

Stayed here in August its lovely hotel & pub but completely let down by a really rude manager. I could hear her being rude to staff & guest. We went down for breakfast one morning & she got our order wrong, she then had the cheek to say it was our fault, not sure how as we didnt cook it and anyway who has baked beans on pancakes lol shes a vile women. Definitely will not be staying there again, would rather pay extra in a taxi & stay at the premier inn in Braintree.

We were having a great time the evening of the Witham street festival, however it was spoilt by us witnessing the manager being incredibly nasty to one of the staff members. It is clear the young lady on the bar was working so hard on an extremely busy and probably stressful night, and the manager was embarrassingly drunk with her friends, it was shameful. Do better and be kind to your staff 😢 you don’t deserve them.

Not what we expect from the restaurant Farmfoods would have done better with the quality of food served I ordered battered haddock with fries it came with salad as no peas we’re available the fish was was over cooked dark brown in colour not a nice cooked battered fish it tasted old not freshly cooked, the portion size was for a child not an adult, the fries were anaemic I did ask nicely if they could cook cooked them a bit more crispier that was ignored, I was stuck with salad as no peas very disappointed I I’ve had better with a box of farmfoods battered fish what is wrong with you guys why the poor quality of food prices reflect better quality, the three roast dinners looked and tasted like “prepackaged” sliced meat not roast meat, small bowl of veg between three adults wasn’t enough once again price reflect better quality roast dinner the horseradish sauce was served in McDonald’s styled sauce paper cups! For a hotel restaurant this is not good practice. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel for eats I don’t know what restaurant food people are used to eating but never will we come back again. to be honest I would like a conversation with the restaurant owner.

What a terrible awful staff. I had a family gathering, ordered a glass of Merlot wine, and it was slightly off, or not very nice quality. Whatever it was, it was not to my standard for my personal consumption. Went to the bar, politely told the staff, and the young chap (with a total attitude) said there was nothing wrong with the wine. Said he would change the wine glass, and I said I wanted the wine changed. The boy member of staff was rude, argued with me, told me his manager knew all about wine and had a property in France and generally was insinuating that I did not know what I was talking about. The boy was totally and utterly rude and a disgrace to the service industry. His manager was then called and I said the rude boy had an attitude and was argumentative. I said the boy should not be arguing with me, only to be told he had the right to argue with me. I left with my family and could not be bothered to get a refund. I will never use that hotel for drinks or food and will be further publishing what happened in other publications. I will also be telling all other friends to avoid this awful unprofessional establishment again.

Great, friendly staff and very helpful. Loaded potato skins was missing the bacon. Gourmet burger was cold, hash brown was cold and soft, crispy bacon wasn’t crispy and had more fat than bacon. Cheese hadn’t melted where it was all cold and the bbq beans were missing, very disappointing. Other two mains were lasagne and fajitas that arrived hot and well cooked. Overall 3 out of 5.

We have eaten here three times now always on a Thursday steak night. The steak has been absolutely beautiful each time and cooked exactly to our request. Great value, superb quality and at an amazing price! Staff always friendly too.

When we stayed in December we were disappointed with the breakfast but the manager reassured us this was a glitch and for our latest stay we found breakfast up to their usual high standard. We've not had the opportunity to eat in the restaurant in the evening but the menus look good. Recommended.

We stayed for the weekend - hotel room great, all that we needed, spotless, comfy. However, it was marred by the fact that lunch booking - for 9 - had been lost, as had the deposit paid. By the time they got us a table, realised we had paid ( thanks to online banking) and sat us down, it was almost an hour after our booking. Then we were told as several large orders had been put through, there would be a long wait. When we did get the food ( three of our requested items were off) it was hot and tasty, but I'd be wary of eating here again, although I'd stay in the hotel.

A bit disappointing as we had such a lovely Christmas meal last year. I had the turkey meal it tasted like the meat had arrived presliced with a circle of stuffing in gravy. The pork was very charged and uniform but not crispy. The chicken thighs were very tasty, as were the potatoes and all the vegetables. The starters and desserts were all good. The real pain was when we came to pay the bill. It had to be paid by one person, no separate cards or cash, even if we said the exact amount we wanted to pay. I have never been to a restaurant where this has been refused. Sadly, I will be trying another restaurant next time.

Had our annual Christmas lunch with 5 friends and what a fabulous meal we had in the restaurant at The White Hart in Witham. Tia was our waitress and couldn’t do enough for us. The food was delicious and loads of it! We pre ordered and the food came out piping hot and delivered to us by Tia saying our name so no confusion and all the dishes were just what we ordered with side dishes of our choice. The restaurant was beautifully decorated with sparkly Christmas decorations and twinkly lights so you felt really Christmassy and all the staff made you feel very comfortable. Will definitely be booking for next year and the whole experience was 5 star.

Very pleased with a spontaneous visit on a hot humid day, desperate for a good meal. Was on route to east coast. Very prompt cheery and helpful service from Tia and Jody who deserved their extra tip. Lovely roast meat meals.

Best breakfast in Witham! No cheap cash n carry sausages or bacon here. Good quality food cooked perfectly. Friendly staff and the price was not a rip off either. Would definitely recommend

Highly recommend the food, second time ive been here to eat and had the same thing again! Fajitas are amazing and the steak comes on a hot plate with all the onions and peppers! Service was fantastic also. Cant fault anything! Thank you.

Visited The White Hart on a little trip to Witham with friends. When we first arrived we headed straight to the reception as we’d already booked a table. The pub seemed very COVID friendly which is always great to see as it makes everyone feel more comfortable. We were shown to our table and asked to check in on the NHS app. We were then given the option as to whether we wanted to oder with the serving staff or on the app. We opted for the app as we were 3 couples, which meant we could all pay separately. First off we ordered a round of drinks which came promptly then we ordered food. Being gluten free I had already enquired about their options even though they are stated on the menu. I fancied a burger and then menu didn’t say whether the kitchen had gf buns available so I just dropped a message a week before to ask. I got a prompt reply to which they informed me the kitchen did have some gf buns. Perfect. I always like to message before so as not to hold up everyone and keep asking lots of questions. We all offered our food and didn’t have to wait too long for it to arrive. My burger was great. I do always worry about what burger bun the restaurant will have but this was a lovely brioche bun. Winner! The New York Burger was so tasty and the chips were great. We ordered another round of drinks which did take a while and we had to enquire however it was a Saturday night so very busy. The staff were all really friendly and very efficient. We will definitely go again when we visit our friend.

Only saving grace is quality bar staff. Very expensive. Little atmosphere and arrogant and ignorant management in jo and dave. Give it a miss, friendlier places in walking distance.

Since Covid it has given the staff an excuse to be rude to the customers, and that includes the owner and also the young man who thinks he's doing you a favour by having to wipe the tables etc and saying it's an issue by moving you, as he has to clean everything! Surely it needs to be cleaned, covid or not.Then they say they cant reserve a table, or sit you near a heater, while you watch them sit someone else there and turn a heater on for them! Obviously friends. They wont give tables of two to people outside now either, as they say they want the revenue. I'm sorry I ever ate out to help you out! Shame on you White Hart!

Fabulous! My wife and I plus another couple had a lovely late lunch at the White Hart yesterday. As always the food, drinks and service were spot on. It ended up a bit chilly in the marquee but the staff did their best to keep us warm and comfortable by moving us closer to the heaters. Ordering and paying on-line is very straightforward and should be a permanent thing. Well done WH team!

What a fabulous establishment very warm welcoming staff throughout our stay. Great location perfect car park rooms spotless great size and all the facilities you require, hairdryer iron etc. The bar area is lovely and friendly again spotlessly clean and a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The breakfast was superb plenty of choice overall a wonderful stay. Thankyou to Tom and Clare Scawthorn for recommending this hotel can't wait till our next visit.

Service a lot to be desired! I went for a meal today with my partner, we ordered two soft drinks one of which the syrup had gone which was kindly replaced however it had not been pulled through enough and needed to be changed a second time of which the manager did and did not look best pleased at me for doing this. Next I ordered the fish and chips, the options were with peas or salad I asked for mushy peas, the waitress stated they just did normal peas I wasn’t sure if they did mushy at the time as just stated peas so opted for salad. Within less than five minutes the food arrived? Fish had a dark appearance as though the oil had not been changed and tasted bland and mushy/watery as though it was frozen, I asked my partner to taste to make sure it wasn’t just me being fussy and he agreed, he couldn’t fault his meal. The waitress came over to check and my partner said it was fine as because of the drink fiasco I didn’t want to make a fuss but eventually did when another waiter came over of which the manager came over and asked why I had not said anything earlier. It was offered to remake but because my partner had eaten his I declined. They said they would take it off the bill. Fast forward ten minutes and I was greeted by the manager again stating she had spoken to the chef and the fish was cooked normal and nothing had changed, I said it was personal preference and I didn’t enjoy it sorry, she walked off in a huff. My partner asked for the bill and to my surprise the fish was still on, I kindly asked the waiter for it to be taken off then the manager approached again stating the fish was made as normal, I had eaten half, I moaned about the drink, I requested peas not on the menu and that she would not take it off the bill. As a professional I felt disgusted that I was being accused of eating half and leaving the rest to demand a free meal. The manager stated I could pay under duress however I would HAVE to pay it or she would ‘take it further’, I stated I would pay for the chips and little I had eaten as by law this is allowed. She walked off and refused this offer. Eventually after sitting there with my partner unaware of what was happening the bill was brought out again minus the fish and we paid. Before I finished my drink the manager again marched over and said have you paid? If so get out. Avoid at all costs if you dare to speak up about poor food and service, disgusting attitudes! As a key worker I will not be returning for fear of being accused of theft!

Come in for a meal today which was very nice and would definitely return, just wanted to give a mention to the waitress Jade who was very attentive and made sure our experience was the best we could have.

Recently visited under the eat out to help out scheme, without this offer the menu items are pricey for what is essentially pub grub. Surroundings were pleasant, clean and we will visit again, but maybe just for a drink.

We ventured out for the afternoon and stumbled upon this lovely pub.., with plenty of customer parking which was a bonus. We headed in and there was plenty of safety precautions which was lovely. We managed to get a table outside and had a few drinks then decided to get a little something to eat. We ordered the chilli nachos and some cheese and bacon fries and omg the best nachos I've ever had at a restaurant ever!! Thank you so much for an amazing visit.

We stayed here on the 4th July but have stayed a few times in the past. The first night out of pub lockdown. We were visiting my daughter in lovely Witham. Kitchen not open as had to be deep cleaned due to the virus so didn't eat there but lots of choice in Witham ( we had a Turkish take away). Four poster Room was lovely, very clean and comfy and even though over looking the garden we were not bothered by noise. We were most impressed by the social distancing measures put in place. Reserved tables even in the beer garden which was spaced well, waitress service for everything, no going to the bar, sanatisers etc. We felt very safe and able to distance easily. Other places in Witham were definitely not as clued up for example a tapas restaurant was crammed. Well done white Hart we will be back.

Been here lots of times and it has a nice atmosphere. Food always good but not special. Staff r friendly and relaxed and its a great place to meet up with friends.

We had two long tables and a two or three course meal. The starter was lovely, the main course was really enjoyable we had several side dishes of vegetables more than enough. The sweet was good too

We had arrived early in Witham for a pre-booked meal and looked around for somewhere to have a drink. The White Hart came into view so it was an obvious choice. Seeing the food coming out we both wished that we had booked here for a meal however…….next time. Service at the bar was swift and friendly with ample, comfortable, seating around. We definitely will be back to savour their meals. One surprise for me was the prices behind the bar. Large red wine and a double vodka on the rocks at £8.95….dunno how they do it but I am not complaining.

Having stayed here before and stopping over for work in the area again I managed to get a room for the night. As always the staff here are soooo welcoming and friendly.I had room 7 which was a family room with a lovely comfortable double bed and two singles, beautifully decorated & nice clean bathroom with all the usual amenities in the bedroom. I have coeliac disease and so have to be very careful with food and again as well as check in Jo could not have been more helpful! For Dinner I opted for the sirloin steak and chips (they have a separate frier for chips so safe for Coeliac’s) and the steak was cooked to perfection! Totally stuffed from this (with what looked like an 8 month old baby in my belly but was a mahoosive food baby) but I simply had to try the Lemon roulade which was GF again sooooo scrumptious but my god after all this food I thought I was going to pop! I absolutely love all the quirky funny signs everywhere here inside, outside and even in the toilets which put a smile on your face even if you have had a terrible day With a full belly of food and feeling very content I went to bed and again wasn’t disappointed with the comfort of this bed & mattress and slept like a log!For breakfast I had bacon, mushrooms & baked beans Have Jo my toasty bags and I sliced my GF bread and again cooked with no complaints from the staff or chef which was refreshing as having coeliac disease is a right pain and sometimes you can be made to feel like you are putting people out but not here! If you are looking for somewhere to eat well locally & even stay over in the area - STAY HERE! You simply will not be disappointed! I hope you enjoyed my review and pics

We were in town for The ELO Encounter, at the Public Hall. Having wandered the town for the afternoon, and chose a restaurant to eat at, later, we chose The White Hart for a few beers, and watch some of the rugby.Despite a large portion of it being a restaurant (it is a hotel, after all) The White Hart still retains the atmosphere of a proper boozer, with adequate space for the public bar.Initially, I was put off by a standard selection of pumps (although I would have been quite happy with a pint of Beavertown Neck Oil) but I noticed that there was a good selection of Real Ales in casks.We sat and had a pleasant time and watched the sport. The staff were friendly, and from what I saw, the food looked pretty good.Anytime, we're back in Witham for a gig, we'll pop in for a pint.

My last review was positive but I'm absolutely gutted about our recent experience. So my boyfriend and I thought we'd go to our favorite place in witham for dinner, never have we had a bad experience until now with our food. Let's start with the fact our meals had clearly been microwaved,you can tell by consistency and temperature. My rice was basically glue and the meats from our chilli/lasagne were dry. The side order of chips were clearly undercooked, I love a crunchy chip when its the skin is crispy...not the potato. This explained why our service was quicker than usual, despite the smiling faces and eagerness to please the food was beyond salvagable. Such a shame.

Met friends here for a meal early December and had not booked but staff very accommodating and shuffled some tables around and made us welcome. Staff very very good and provided an excellent service constantly checking that out meals were all ok. Food was outstanding and would recommend to anybody thinking of going to Witham for a good quality meal and service.

Popped in for a couple of drinks, the selection is extensive (they have a large range of real ales), service prompt and the atmosphere was nice. Definitely recommend.

This is a cosy restaurant were you can just relax and enjoy your meal. Not the best food but good value for a night out.

The standard menu here is extensive - there really is something for everyone! On top of that, there is a specials board, which also has a good range of choices.

We visited at lunchtime - 4 adults and a small child. The food and service were excellent. A great choice of menu. The staff were friendly- they also discretely asked several times if everything was ok, or if we needed anything. Will definitely visit again.

Went for an early evening meal and the standard was equal to any high end restaurant, scallops amazing, chicken with spinach and apricots, cooked perfectly and the sauce was to die for, all for a very reasonable price, would highly recommend you try it

Well what can i say such a disappointment booked a table for my sons birthday never again so disappointed meals cold over cooked it took 1hour 30 minutes for a steak meal to arrive it took 3 attempts to order I meal so disappointed all I wanted was a nice meal with my family's birthday not to much to ask my husband and I are regularly customers but i feel like taking my custome some where else 2out of 10

We were wanting to book a place but the manager came out the other day and started with there attitude and refuse us because we were going in asking a couple of time and said it was protecting them so we got banned because of it so never tell anyone to stay there so bad and food is so disgusting as we had a cold dinner

Turned up at 4pm pn Sunday. Found table out back. Ordered 2 fish and chips and 1 carvery. Nice pint of "Taste of Summer". Fish was fine but basket of chips looked a bit small. Carvery was delicious and generous. Kids loved their Mint Mountains for pudding!

My partner and i held our Engagement party in the White Harts function room and it was the BEST night. Cannot recommend them enough. Such a lovely atmosphere and helpful staff along the way with e-mails and phone calls. Lovely garden area. Clean and tidy.

Hadn't eaten here for a long time, but popped in today with my husband and son, food was lovely not to mention the fact they were so accommodating with my son changing the menu slightly.

Went to the White Hart for a father's day lunch and had a great experience, the food was excellent, my two young grandsons were very well looked after as were we all. Great food, great service and very reasonable prices.

This hotel was lovely to stay in. The room was very clean and was just what we needed for a night stay.

I’m staying in their rooms for a few nights and this was my meal on the first night.

I have visited this place few times and it’s always busy but as it has numerous tables in different rooms it doesn’t feel crowded except when you want a drink. It has a good size alfresco area with beautiful lights just a shame it’s pretty much just for smokers. It’s definitely missing some greenery of some type though. Food is just traditional pub style and quality.

Good value, good food and great service. Always a pleasure on a Sunday lunch time. I have left many a time with a full belly and a contented smile! Caters well for the elderly and young alike. The bar area as others have said is super friendly and well stocked with local ales and other drinks. Has always been a go to place when I have come back 'home' to visit.

I've been to the White Hart a few times now. It's a lovely, vibrant pub and hotel. Its busy and has easy parking out back and at nearby Tesco. It has a nice enough outdoor area and TV for the sports.

Called a week before to confirm out booking and they had lost it on a bank holiday.

Went and had dinner at the White Hart this evening with my wife and daughter. Waitress was very polite and had good understanding of the Menu. I had the Salt and Pepper Squid starter and wow it was lovely then had Cheese and Bacon Burger and Bacon Fries with Onion Petals and again very nice and good portion size may be too big on the onion petals but very tasty. Would easly go back again. The general atmosphere was really nice lots of people having a few drink and good time. At moment they are under refurbishment but didnt seem to cause any trouble to the day to day running of the business.

Stayed here for 2 nights as attending shows in Colchester and Chelmsford and Witham is pretty central between the two. The hotel is centrally located on the main high street and has a small car park at the rear. The banners and signs on the outside, loads of people smoking outside the main entrance and loud music blearing out was a bit off putting when we arrived. Check in was a little chaotic, 2 girls shouting at each other as to who was going to do it , and then whilst filling in the form girl took a phone call and just chucked keys at us. We had to wait until she finished the conversation to ask where the room was. Its quite a narrow staircase and you have to open two doors to get to the bedroom area. The suprizing thing was that despite the noise downstairs you could not hear a thing from the rooms. The room was modern and nicely decorated and had everything that you needed for a stay. Ensuite was clean and shower was powerful. It was also nice that there were windows you could open and the room was cool. Service in the restaurant was mixed: first night great service , nice menu choice and plenty of specials . Morning breakfast service was a bit slower but a good choice of breakfast items although some parts of the meal were better cooked than others. Last night when I was on my own service was terrible , I asked if I could sit on a table and was given a menu but no'one came to take my order. Went up to the till where we had paid for our meal the night before and was told you have to go to the bar. Waited over 5 mins to get served even though the staff had time to stand around chatting to each others and bar regulars, eventually got served but lady seemed to have no idea how to find things on the till or what was on the menu and it took ages to place order. Meal was nice and when girl came to clear plate I asked if I could order a dessert, again she said go to the till and again had to wait an age, even worse when I got back to my table I found someone clearing away my drink because they thought I had left. I would stay again as the rooms were really nice , and at £70 a night for a twin room it was better than I was expecting but maybe staff need a little more training
