The Sun Inn in Braintree

Do not recommend visiting the sun at all! I went for Saturday lunch and ordered the chicken Caesar salad off the menu. When my dish came out, the chicken was undercooked and pink in the middle! I bought this attention to the waiter who kindly said she would remove it and make the kitchen aware. Following this, someone who I’m assuming was the manager come out and said to me that the kitchen had temperature checked the chicken and it would have been safe to eat, the chicken was visibly pink in the middle! They took it off the bill however I feel the way the manager handled the situation made this so much worse. I will not be visiting again.

The food is always delicious and as ever the sandwiches were amazing. The staff are always friendly and the service is great

OMG what a place we visited this place on recommendation from a work colleague on the 18th October for my birthday WOW what a meal my partner had the skate and I had the monkfish scampi both were beautiful I had a pint of shandy and my partner had a tonic it came too £49 which was excellent value for money beautiful pub built in 1543 as a coach house so we decided to try their Sunday lunch and we were not disappointed the beef was perfection along with all the accompanying side dishes my partner had the turkey which was perfection again then I tried their Sunday lunch homemade apple crumble with sauce anglaise the apple was soft but firm enough too retain its shape crumble was perfect and was the sauce staff are friendly and helpful toilets are kept too a very high standard aswell this is a place well worth a visit but pls bear in mind too book they welcome walk ins but pre books get priority everything you see in the Sunday lunch photo apart from the cauliflower cheese is what you get with you meal

Delighted by the warm welcome and strikingly original and therefore fascinating menu. Service was so personable and helpful. All meals were delicious and beautifully prepared. Pleasant relaxed atmosphere, comfortable furniture and spacious tables. Even background music was kept down to a whisper. All five star! (Only development area? Some more tasty and varied beers from independent brewers, rather than the somewhat bland Shepherd Neame pair on draught.)

We were delighted by the friendly and helpful service, imaginative and varied food offer, plus a relaxing ambience where you could talk quietly and be heard! The meals all proved to be delicious and beautifully prepared. Cider and Guinness Xero were both appreciated. Only room for development is to go beyond the rather insipid Shepherd Neame beers. Maybe be more daring and innovative - buy in from a quality independent brewer like Hammerton or Siren. It would be worth it!

Really lovely place! Very cosy and welcoming! Staff are great, very attentive. It’s great that they are dog friendly and left some treats out for them too. Lovely food too. Will be back soon!

Top quality service and food with a lovely atmosphere. We meet friends here about three times a year as it's about an hour's drive for both of us to meet midway. Wouldn't dream of going elsewhere.

We were not the easiest customers - called and asked to move our table back an hour, three small children and a dog at our table - and still the service was exceptional. Lovely staff who went above and beyond for us, great food and beautifully thought-out details all around - warm blankets for the courtyard, complimentary sanitary items in the toilets, treats for the dogs - service like this shouldn't be hard to come by but it is. The food was delicious and similar levels of love put into it too. Thank you!

Our new favourite spot having recently moved to the local area. Consistently excellent food, great wine list, plus fabulous service from Helen & team. It's the ideal traditional village pub & certainly one of the best in Essex!

Best Sunday lunch I've had in a long while. They served (proper) home made pies which were delicious. The Sunday roasts got good reviews from my family too with enormous Yorkie puds. Fresh vegetables from their garden. Great friendly service. I'll be back again!

Lied to about accessibility. Rude waitress and useless owner who hid away. Food was the saving grace but we couldn't get in to use the toilet so we had to leave shortly after our meal. Poultry apologies at the time and rude responses to our reviews since. I hope the owner knows what we have to go through one day

I went to the Sun Inn and had the most humiliating, discriminatory experience you could imagine. As a wheelchair user I am very concerned with accessibility, when I initially found the inn online we checked, calling to ensure an *electric* wheelchair could enter the pub. We were told it was possible, there was just an inch step to get in. Wonderful, we thought, so I booked the table indicating I was a wheelchair user - the staff had told my family member they’d communicate our needs. I’ll be honest I expected a small independent pub to know how to communicate needs as they are providing a service. When we arrived we found the pub was not accessible from the front or back. My family members went inside to find out what was going on, I requested a seat inside (I was told this was possible remember) and they had placed us right at the back corner, in a place even the narrowest manual chair would not make. When my family member challenged this as it was IMPOSSIBLE for me to enter, the barmaid (apron and dark hair) was so rude to my family that the manager apologised for her conduct, as did other staff as apparently “this is what she is like”. At this point I was shown to the garden whilst my family again tried understand why we had been told mistruths during the time of booking. a staff member came to talk to me, she looked over me - not at me - until I pointed out the rudeness and (unintentionally) dehumanising nature of this. To her credit she apologised and then ensured she looked at me, not over me. By this point I was so embarrassed. We were (eventually) shown a table, where nobody even considered moving a seat to let me sit until we asked, internalised ableism, so, embarrassing for me to be constantly made to feel unwelcome for being disabled. As we were not told the truth at point of booking I was unable to even use the toilet. Further humiliation and discomfort. Ultimately we stayed as I was frightened of the booking charge, even if we left due to the discrimination. The food was good but it does not make up for the appalling way myself, and my family, were treated. At the end of the night we were offered 10% discount by the manager, the owner was very rude about this, we were also offered wine but as my family member said, I was the one affected, and not all of us drink wine. My partner bought the manager a drink as she was not at fault as it was her fourth shift and nobody had communicated a chair user was coming, as my partner is polite he offered the rude man on the bar a drink too but I can see this was the OWNER who did not offer to help at all or tell him who he waspresumably as he knew he was completely in the wrong. Ultimately I would never visit this establishment again. It was degrading, humiliating, discriminatory & entirely ableist. Disabled people don’t even have facilities to use. We know it is an old building hence why we contacted them first. Never go here, look at the negative reviews and the owners rude responses, that should give you an idea of how horrid it is. EDIT: the manager has responded and has again been untruthful. Can you tell me one belittling thing I said? I asked the manager to look at me not over me. You did not read my review and tried to stock response me, I said already I know the building is listed, which is why we had a phone call. My electric wheelchair is narrower than my manual as it doesn’t have self propelling wheels; we did also specify over the phone and were told this would be communicated. As you can see from the owners response he has been incredibly rude and refuses to take ownership.

Lies, discrimination and a rude waitress. Told it was accessible when it wasn't. Rude staff and a new manager left to take the hit. Think the owner was there but didn't realise at the time. Either way the owners didn't care. Foods decent but I wouldn't recommend based of our experience and what I've found out since. If you have accesibilty needs and don't want rude staff go to the angel. It's much better and not far Edit: More lies. We specifically mentioned an electric wheelchair. I was the one who offered to buy you a drink you fool(because i didnt think you were the owner). Your staff caused the problems and your manager agreed with us. Most people in the village know what you're like. Look at other reviews. If you could've accommodate us inside you should have. If you couldn't you shouldn't have said you could. Sort yourself out, you took no interest and now you're making it up as you go along. You should have told me you were the owner and not left your new manger who knew nothing about the building to deal with it.

Called in advance to check electric wheelchair accessible and to ask for a table that would also be suitable, told there was a small step but it would be fine and to make sure we noted on the booking and shed know who it was when we arrived, no entrances are accessible this left my family member unable to use any facilities the table provided was in a corner between a narrow pillar and no space was left to seat wheelchair user who couldn't get in anyway an extremely aggressive barmaid when we questioned this told us " we should have told them and we've had wheelchairs before and they're booked outside and later was complaining about it being to busy to deal with us the new manager tried her hardest to rectify an embarrassing and disappointing experience and we thanked her for it , the owner offered 10% off the bill for the appalling discriminatory experience however the manager knocked off a little more all in all , we'd never go again, never recommend and frankly looking at the owners responses to poor reviews the culture of attitude is clearly the issue , NOT a person with disabilities

Really lovely restaurant, perfect for couples or groups. Food was absolutely delicious. Cheese board with choice of cheeses and homemade crackers was sensational. Great vegetarian menu as well. Lovely service and garden area is very romantic.

Highly recommended by our Airbnb hosts and they were not wrong. Lovely food served with a smile. Booking is required especially at busy times. Nice outdoor area, cosy pub, good selection of beer and wine. Dog friendly.

Great food, great service what more can you as for

Always fabulous food and I love sitting in the Courtyard in the Summer. In the winter the inside is cosy. Not cheap but oh so worth it. Veg from their own garden, fresh foccacia with oil and saba, great roast and puddings to die for. Burgers also awesome. Ate my roast so quick I forgot to take a photo!

Lovely pub . Food to match Service spot on . Did not wait for any courses, only when we asked for a breather. Best fish and chips so far in Essex.

Went for a midweek meal out with a friend here - was very impressed with food and service. Wasn't feeling that hungry so we went straight to mains, really lovely food and in the case of the fish and chips that I had, there was a lot of it! I have to give a special mention to the smashed peas that came with it, they were awesome - think I could have had a meal of just those, they were so nice! We finished our meal outside with some hot drinks, although I was very tempted with desert - too full for the cheese and biscuits offering (that sounded great) and unfortunately, they ran out of cheesecake... perhaps next time...! Parking (if driving) is a bit of a pain, there is a small car park, but otherwise it's a case of finding a suitable space out on the road. Look forward to trying this again, maybe with the family...!

Another great experience (when isn't it?!). The beer festival was so well organised! A vast array of beers and ciders to choose from, all of which were excellent. We also had their street food which was such a treat and so indulgent. Great atmosphere, finely tuned table service (always with a smile and timely). Couldn't ask for more. We are so grateful to have such a wonderful establishment in the area and we'll always recommend visiting here - groups, families, couples, it's a great place for all.

Visited many times in the 60s and loved this pub. It has changed slightly but still one we will visit again. Lovely outside seating and good atmosphere. Staff helpful and food good. My only comment I would make is not so many thick cut chips please.

Amazing food and great service. Came for the Sunday roast and left really happy. Dog treats and water bowls were also given to my dog which was a plus point!

I almost never leave reviews (good or bad) but wanted to highlight the amazing summer beer festival put on at the Sun last week/weekend by Andy and his team. A fantastic selection of c. 40 beers and ciders of all types, all offered in half/third/full pints, and at c. £2 for a half, very reasonably priced. Run over five days so that people can pick a time that best suits them / the weather. The courtyard and beer garden at the back are both lovely, and the staff really friendly. You could tell that a lot of thought and effort had gone into making it a fun time for all, and the street food menu put in place specially for it was varied and interesting and fitted well with the general relaxed, summery vibe. 10/10 and will definitely be coming back next year and recommending to others.

If you’re a family with children avoid staff clearly don’t like children. We booked for father day lunch at 4:30 with friends and children and was very clear from the get go that certain staff member didn’t like the Children with rude remarks and dirty looks. Since leaving we have received horrible messages from management, after spending £200 in there this is no way to run a business and treat local customers it’s honestly appalling.

Terrible, Outrageously rude. Food was ok nothing special. Seems as though there is a number of negative reviews on here. We have received some completely unprovoked abusive messages from the staff on the customer review form to add to the negative experience. (I assume as we were honest about our experience) seems like a common trend when anyone has called them out on here. Clearly the restaurant is run by inexperienced and unrefined people. AVOID!!

Been a while since last at The Sun Inn but back with new neighbours and have realised what we were missing. Great service and food well cooked and presented. Menu with something for everyone and a the fish specials excellent. Looking forward to going again soon. 👍😊

This has to be the very best haddock and chips the fish in beer batter was the best I've had tartar sauce 2nd to none and the peas was also something special! Great service very clean and also lots of room! Thanks you

The Sun has changed somewhat over the past year. Same well cooked and lovely food good beer and God atmosphere. The change, however, is the prices. It is now, in my opinion, quite expensive to dine here with prices for mains costing upwards of £18- £25 I visited recently to have a beer, which I did £4.50 for a bottle. Of 1698 ale, the shock was having a single Jack Daniels at £6,25. The sun is still a nice pub, but be prepared to spend a lot of money. In my opinion, this has turned the pub into a gastro venue.

What an experience! If you're looking for genuine England feeling, that's the place to go! Food is excellent and service is top! Wish I could go there everyday!

I went twice over the last 2 weeks, first time with my girlfriend and it was on a Saturday, I ordered the slowcooked honey glazed belly pork sandwich, it was £8, and it came with really nice rosemary fries and my gf ordered a mushroom soup, probably one of the best mushroom soups i had, the previous best was Marco Piere Whites in Chelsea football ground, their mushroom soup is to die for too, we also had the crunchy Potato Dauphinoise/crispy gratin... Amazing as always..garentee a pleasant visit to The Sun Inn, they have a great selection of beer on tap too, outdoor seating is a little gem too, I will be a regular, oh the staff are all very helpful and polite, not snobby, not intimidating and informative.

A very quant and unassuming local pub that exceeded all expectations from quality of food, the attentive service and the high quality of hygiene. The starter of crispy duck egg with Chorizo and Asparagus was an absolute delight, the pie was perfectly baked, fish and chips was so light. Along with the pie came a side of seasonal veggies which was exceptional as the attentiveness of the service they split out the butter seasoning due to personal allergies. Would highly recommend coming and booking in advance, we walked in and was very lucky to get a lovely spacious table tucked away. Thank you very much for everything, keep up the exceptional work, we will be back!

Had another delicious meal at The Sun. This time I was there for lunch and chose from their extensive vegetarian menu. The dish was described as braised onion, truffled wild mushrooms, cheddar rarebit, baby leeks, hazelnut and soubaise. My nephew had confit of duck, which he really enjoyed. The menu at The Sun always has interesting dishes that you don’t find elsewhere, as well as a selection of more familiar ones. The food was tasty, the staff attentive and the experience was overall five star.

Really nice service, comfortable, great ambience. The food is excellent and varied. They serve pies and fish and chips, but also a wider range of daily specials. The liver and bacon with bubble and sqeak was great. Lovely desserts including a memorable malted milk chocolate torte. Beers and wine good too. Book in advance. Packed out on Sundays. At quieter times, they limit the number of bookings they take to the number of staff working on the day so that can offer everyone a good experience.

Don't bother going if you only want a drink! Or book a table, just to have a pint! Lovely old pub spoiled by non-plussed staff! Only interested in profits, even lady waiting to pay for large food bill for her family, was ignored for ages, two people behind the bar, just ignoring anyone walking up to the bar,! Customers seem to be an inconvenience. Go to the Railway Tavern down the road!

I have been to this pub/restaurant before but I had forgotten how good it is. Delicious food, probably the best I've eaten in any pub, reasonably priced and the staff are excellent.

Sunday roast is fantastic here. This was our third visit.. such friendly staff Highly recommended… The bread and butter pudding OMG Ps when available try the Scotch egg for starter.

We came here for dinner just before Christmas and it was sublime. We sat right by the fire and it was a good temperature for all our party. The food is excellent. The service is great and very helpful. Helen and her team are knowledgeable and attentive without being intrusive. We came back 3 days later to just have a drink and a snack at the bar. I would recommend this to anyone whether a romantic dinner for two or a gathering of many whom you have not seen for a while. We will definitely be back. They are also very dog friendly

We visited the Sun Inn for a family lunch. Very attentive staff checking in on us. Delicious food. I had cod for my main and a crumble for dessert. Only change I would make is thicker custard! But everything else perfect.

A great atmosphere pub was full & buzzing. Went to the Sun for lunch disappointed . I had the pie too salty to eat . The sauce was like brown salt . Noticed a previous review the other day saying the same thing . Not taking any notice ?

Great reviews made us travel to experience, lovely old beamed pub, warm ambiance with fire burning. Couldn’t fault staff. But oh the food was so salty! Party of four, apart from the burger all dishes were very salty. Pie looked lovely with a separate serving of gravy. But all, over salted! How does that happen! Really disappointed. Sadly can’t recommend!

Good quality ingredients, well cocked. A balanced menu for a small local pub. Good range of beers. Friendly and helpful staff. Recommended; you should book as it can be busy.

Staff need a lot more training. My pressed pork belly was tough, which was my second choice because the waiter did not tell me my first choice was off the menu. As was my friend's first choice, so she also had to make a speedy second choice.

Fourth visit and each time has been very consistent. Excellent customer service . Very very good food ! Will ( if not already )become a regular customer as live local.

We had a lovely Sunday lunch today to celebrate my birthday. There was a birthday card waiting for me from the Sun Inn, so thoughtful! The team were great and very understanding when one of our party was delayed. The menu is really lovely and the food is beautifully cooked. The best roast potatoes I’ve had in a pub! My only comment would be that there wasn’t a lot of meat, but it was beautifully pink and served with lots of veg. We had children in the party and it’s so nice that they eat off the main menu, just smaller portions - no nuggets or basic pasta dishes here! Thank you for a great lunch.

Terrible Night, staff refused to serve us drinks until all our party arrived. And then waited a further 30 mins before serving upshot almost 45 minutes no drinks. Even when we tried to buy at bar were told to sit down!! One chair was missing from our table and rather than apologising, we were insulted by the staff apologising to adjacent table for getting a chair. Service was slow and unfriendly. Food not as good as used to be ordered the pie well what rubbish a cheap bought in one no filling and hard pastry. Dessert rubbish so disappointed by our treatment that won't be going again. Used to be our go to place which we always recommended

Lovely gourmet pub with food that is always delicious and service with a smile. We eat here at least every couple of weeks and have always had great experiences. Lovely open fires in winter too.

We have been to The Sun a number of times and always found the food excellent. This visit was no different but the occasion was ruined by the officious and rude attitude of the lady in charge. And all totally unnecessary. We will give The Sun a miss for a while and hope she is not on duty if we return.

Some distance from home but decided to give it a go based on the positive food reviews and glad we did as it was a very enjoyable lunch. We sat outside under the tent structure, which was nice but as the weather was still warm and sunny we would have liked to have been in the gardens. Often struggle with the veggie options on offer being boring but here I really enjoyed the Vegetable tagline and hubby thoroughly enjoyed his burger. The coffee with a shortbread biscuit is also worth a mention as it was really good. Service was faultless and very attentive.

I’ve been coming to the Sun Inn for around 3 years now. The food is consistently excellent & always caters well for me being coeliac. However, whilst the food we all had was beautiful this evening, the service was really lacklustre. Went to the bar on arrival to order drinks. Was told to be seated as it was table service only. 20 minutes later, someone took our drinks order. Previously I’ve had the best bloody Mary’s ever here but tonight they were appalling. Took another 10 minutes to get me a gluten free menu. Apart from the older lady who’s worked there a while, the younger staff were lacklustre with no personality & quite ignorant. It pains me to write this but whilst the quality of the food remains absolutely top notch, the serving staff need a rocket up them.

Although a pleasant meal , the portion of vegetables were quite small . Also the hot chocolate was lukewarm. Otherwise it was all fine . I hadn’t been here for some time and it is now really a restaurant rather than a pub doing food...

Fantastic little find in the Kelvedon/ Feering area. Best pint I’ve found yet in Essex (as an Irish man I know my stout!). Food menu is outstanding and the Sunday roast is an absolute must! Extremely welcoming and hospitable staff, a credit to owner Andy and a special mention to staff members Nina and Helen who without doubt always cater to your required needs. Biased I might be but it’s without doubt the best establishment in the county!

Food was delicious, both carnivore and vegetarian options were delicious. Super dog friendly. We visited en route to a holiday rental, and we're planning to return for the home leg.

Visited 03/09/2023. Sunday Roast was fantastic, we tried the Turkey, Pork and Beef and all were exceptional. Friendly staff and a good atmosphere. We will visit this hidden gem again.

We eat here regularly and it is always wonderful food and friendly and efficient service. They even have a Gluten Free menu - so I can eat safely and enjoy the wonderful food and beautiful surrounds of this lovely pub.

After finding this place on Google and seeing the great reviews, I booked it for a family meal. Andrew was great and answered all my questions beforehand. From the moment we arrived, we were given a very warm welcome, the setting was lovely and the food that followed was incredible. I highly recommend the beef roast! Fantastic roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. Will definitely be coming back again!
