We decided on a chippy lunch before heading for T20 cricket in Chelmsford, the first time we have used Mr. Chips at lunchtime. It was just as good as the occasional evening treat, freshly cooked and great service.

Great fish and chips. Excellent and friendly staff. The skate is immense, the burgers are superb and the fried chicken is in a different league. They’ll even double fry the chips if requested. I’ll be back.

Our local chip shop has always given us great food. They sell burgers/fried chicken plus the usual suspects. The wife usually gets plaice which is always cooked fresh. It's worth the small wait as it's not sitting under the heat lamp. The only thing I wish they sold is a kebab. They don't open on Mondays. There is a small car park round the back that has 2hrs free parking. The shop is in a small parade which has a small convenience shop, a boots chemist and a hair dresser's.

Only ordered a portion of chips.shocked at the price and then found them dry,hard and un eatable.shame to have to feed the bin with them. Shall not be returning.

Fantastic chips and fried chicken

We like this chipshop so much better than Chelmsford one's that I go the 4miles out of the way 👍 Chips can be a bit crispy/hard but never a bad thing.

We went for a takeaway for lunch and we all found the large cod and chips to be tasty and of very good quality

Tried the burger 🍔 it was tasty with a fresh bun recommended 😋 salad and sauce of you choice. Chips are a good standard.

Tonight I was served by Jo, Her customer service was fantastic she was really polite and friendly. Got a fruitshoot straight away for him to enjoy whilst we waited for his food to be cooked. The food was fantastic and tasted lovely and reasonably priced. THANK YOU MR CHIPS

Unfortunately I have had a few negative experiences with the chips from this establishment , they have a definite twang and appear to be re-fried, until this changes I won’t go back, it’s a shame but the chips have to be up to scratch as they are a large part of the meal

First visit since change of ownership and so disappointed.overpriced chips hard and dry.most went in the bin as uneatable.won’t be back and can’t recommend.

We throughly enjoyed our freshly cooked piece of Rock and Haddock. With one portion of chips and a battered sausage to share we had a delicious dinner for two. Generous portion sizes and reasonable pricing. Best chippy for miles.

Just try the large huss/rock and large chips. Oh my lord, that is a huge portion 😂 but size aside, well cooked not greasy and decent chips. Oh and a huge portion 🙆

Ordered by phone for 12 people, was told a time to collect and one minute after our arrival it was ready for collection. Ordered various food but the burgers were not standard requests, some with mayo some without etc, not only was each burger hot tasty and exactly as requested but they wrote the contents of each burger on the lid which was so helpful when dishing up. The plaice was ginormous! We have recently moved here this will definitely be our local chippy.

I ordered a chicken burger with a portion of chips and a sausage, the burger was really good and the chips were probably some of the best I ever tried. The atmosphere was nice, my friend got cod with chips and is very happy with their fish foods. Overall, very nice place and the lady at the counter was very pretty : )

My family like this place, so we take the opportunity to eat from there from time to time as we do not live in the area. The staff are friendly and helpful as you would hope. The food is cooked well consistently, but (There's always a 'but') the chip potion is a little small and could be increased more. The place always seem to have people there, so I would assume the other customers have the same opinion rather than treat it as a convenience.

This chip shop totally change when it was sold off. The only way to get a nice peace of fish is to have it cooked fresh. Twice now chips have been soggy and the batter not crispy.

Just moved to the area and used this fish and chip shop a couple of times.Both times we have ordered cod and chips, kids and adult portions are both generous - fish is fresh and batter is crisp. Can’t fault it, even the mushy peas were nice

Staying with family locally and decided we'd have fish and chips from their local takeaway. This place deserves a mention because of its exceptional quality of fish and cooking.Firstly, not all fishmongers offer skate/ray, but they do it to order so, like all of their fish, it was fresh, not oily and perfectly cooked, similarly their chips did not disappoint. Top this all off with speedy and friendly service, and this stands out as a fish 'n chip shop in the old style. If you're in the area, it is well worth a visit.

After this shop changed hands a couple of years ago, we stopped going there as we felt it had taken a downward turn. However, we went back in March as we'd heard it had changed hands again and we are really glad we did. The fish and chips were lovely, really crispy, tasty and most importantly cooked in good quality, clean oil. We'll definitely go back and if like us you gave up on this place, i'd say its worth giving it another try.

Recently organised a charity quiz night in Maldon Essex, Fish & chips and a great quiz goes down very well with the locals and attracted over 90 people. Mr Chips were asked to cater even though the quiz was on a Friday evening they came up trumps and produced very good fish & chips and chicken if preferred. The price was right, and the food & service arranging the package. We had nothing but praise for the food, and will use Mr Chips again for the next function.

We're local to Hatfield Peverel and visit the takeaway every Friday. The fish and chips are always good. Thoroughly recommended.

We have been using Mr Chips for a number of years, the original owner John was from Yorkshire and like most Northern fish & chips, they were better than the fish & chips in the South. However, John moved on and we found the food still good, but another change did result in a change of standard with the food for a while. Sometimes these reviews can be misleading but what I would say now is that we now have no complaints with the food and service which revolves around the established staff from Johns days. Why not try MR CHIPS again I dont think you will be disappointed. ENJOY.

Have used this fish and chip shop for years but on a recent return was very disappointed. Hard chips, cold pie and an assistant with an extremely poor attitude, I won’t be using this place again. Shame.

Excellent chip shop. Nice fluffy chips, great sausages. The chicken is only southern fried so if you like roasted chicken your out of luck. They do however do lovely burgers, pies. All round great chip shop. The ladies behind the counter are friendly and happy which is a nice change. Only thing is not open on a Monday. 😕

I am surprised at some of the negative comments. Have telephoned our orders through on a number of occasions, food has always been ready by the stated time, service quick and efficient, and importantly the food is well cooked and of good quality. Will definately continue to use this takeaway.

Was always happy to drive past other places to get to Mr Chips, but I revisited it this evening after more than 18 moths away and will never go back again. The rock was dark brown, tough and tasteless and the chips were chewy. Most of the food went in the bin so a total waste of £6.90 for the smallest available portions. To be avoided.

I think there should be more photos of the whole cemetery to help those people who are unable to visit because of ill health but who would like to see there graves of their own loved ones

Bought fish and chips there tonight, incredibly disappointed. I asked to salt and vinegar my own chips to which they acknowledged, asked this twice yet the woman handed me my pre salted and vinegar chips, I wanted onion vinegar and they did not give me the chance. Told me I could put it on top of the vinegar they’d already put on. She was rude and did not offer me a new portion instead she looked at me as though I was making a fuss and said rudely ‘I only put a bit on’, when my boyfriend watched her put a sizeable amount on.

We have lived in HP for nearly 50 years and used to go to Mr Chips quite often. But then the chips became indigestible, although the fish wasn't too bad, but that made us go to the chip shop in Boreham. We tried Mr Chips again last week, and I have to say that they were really enjoyable. We will definitely go there more often, but Boreham chip shop has take away Chinese, so we will continue going there for that I would recommend Mr Chips, although it's not a cheap meal any more, is it!

Always reliable. Never had a bad one. And what's more, any leftovers reheat perfectly in an Aga - even after a couple of days.

This takeaway changed hands again in this New Year (2018). I wrote a review in June 2016 praising the food and service. I have been using Mr Chips for around 22 years but my recent visit 2 weeks ago was my last. My cod looked and tasted like it was leftover from the day before and was yellow shrivelled and dry (not white, super fresh with a slightly sticky texture and chunky plump flakes of fish as usual) and the batter thin, dry and made my tummy gurgle!. There was miserable looking chap frying and I was told by the young woman serving ( I had to squeeze a conversation out) that he was the new owner and the previous owners( after John) had gone back to Devon. That was my last ever visit. What a shame.I actually feel very sad about it. So long Mr Chips it was nice knowing you.

Very friendly service I have been buying fish & chips from this shop for twelve years & although it changed hands over a year or so ago the fish is still as fresh & the chips as nice would definitely recommend.

Took forever and the food is seriously substandard!!!!

I had not been to Mr Chips for some months, due to an intense fitness and diet drive. But decided that tonight was going to be a Mr Chips evening because we always had good food from there. I wish now that I hadn't bothered. The fish and chips were both very soggy, totally different to previous meals. I don't know if the business has new owners or not but I will not be returning

I get my fish & chips here 2 or 3 times a month. Portions are always generous and food very well cooked. I am always amazed at the speed with which I am served.

We have used this place for years and never been disappointed. The food is always freshly cooked and lovely. Would recommend a visit.

We live in Springfield, chelmsford but will always travel to go to mr chips. Excellent flavour & quality, always fresh and large portions of chips. Only slightly marked down as cash only which can be a pain & fish seems to be getting smaller.

Good quality chips, not greasy and chips are larger cut (not fries) so they absorb less fat and are better for you.

Really needs a better method of dealing with orders; silly women charged me £15 for 2 portions of chips and 8 nuggets... I ordered "Nugget & Chips 3 Times, please", got a mere half of that for the full price. So even after 10 years they are still getting it wrong. Avoid if you wan't your orders to be correct. Food is hot though, I'll give them that; nothing else.

Had fish and chips couple of weeks ago. Fish was fine but it was definitely smaller than our previous couple of visits which was disappointing. However on a positive note the chips were as good as ever, well from what I recall, it has been a few months since our last visit, regardless they were still good. Only gets an average rating due to smaller fish portion but would still suggest you visit and judge for yourself.

We used this fish & chip shop regularly before it was taken over, now we won't be using again, we had a fish supper from here just after the take over, we were disappointed the fish was a lot smaller and very over cooked, the chips are fine. This was several months ago we thought it might be take over hitches, so we tried them again last night. The fish was again very small and so dry and sort of hard and stringy, the chips were decent, the pie was tasty, but the pastry was very hard, not sure how it was cooked. We have decided that we are going else where next time. If you can't get a nice bit of fish, it's not worth going too. We are sad it has gone down hill as we try and use the facilities within the village.

I've used this chip shop for the last 20 odd years. I still visit when I can even though I've moved to Rayleigh. I can recommend the cod roe ( you get two pieces - yum) also the 'special' that they offer - fish and chips - for smaller appetites ( plenty for me) and much cheaper. The 'new potato' chips in season are DELICIOUS.The shop is always spotless, the food scrumptious and the batter doesn't give me a tummy ache. A varied menu is on offer including veggie options. Its recently changed hands after years of being run by John and his wife and the new owners are doing a great job - I had a piping hot meal a couple of weeks ago and freshly cooked while I waited. I parked up at Little Baddow and greedily scoffed the lot!
