We went in for a pint on a chilly Monday evening. Warmly welcomed by friendly staff and chatty locals. Dog was welcomed too and was made a fuss of. Comfortable bar area, pub clearly two or three hundred years old. Not too noisy/busy for a cosy chat. Relaxing way to spend an hour or two. We’ll definitely be back when next in the area.

A charming & upmarket pub. Don’t be put off by the high-class clientele; no hooray Henrys here, just affable gentlemen who seem to be turning Castle Cary into the new Bruton.

We called in on spec for a drink or two and partaken of the Cider. It was a sunny day so we sat outside and watch the world go by, albeit at a slower pace in the lovely old town. Ordering and payment was effortless and the drinks were brought straight to our table. Clearly a popular pub with the locals and a prime location in town.

On the Cask Marque Ale Trail with a fair choice of revolving ales to choose from. Arriving early this day, I asked some patrons, already with pints in hand, what was the trending tipple. "Doombar" came as a chorus - and so it was. The ale was in excellent condition, the cellar man well deserving the accreditation awarded. The locals were affable and in good spirits - perhaps they'd been there longer than I thought
Chris Sanders . 2020-02-12

The locals, when asked 'What's good' chorused 'Doombar!' which most of them seemed to be drinking - so, knowing I wasn't getting the first one out of the line, even though it's not a beer high on my 'Likes' board, I ordered a pint. Good choice, the ale was in excellent condition. The pub is on the Cask Marque Ale Trail, and really, ALL the beers on offer should be drawn off and equally presentable. I have noticed on early lunch time visits however, this has been a mixed experience. The certificate of accreditation, was unearthed (not yet deployed after a recent paint job) in good order and scanned without trouble - good wi-fi here. The pub is very Olde Worlde and despite clearly having a recent TLC session, retains many of the original features. The same can be said for the gaggle of regulars, settling down for their lunch time session - garrulous and convivial, the banter and jokes were amusing. Worth more than another visit.

Appalling service. Booked for 12pm the previous day, arrived just after, pub was incredibly quiet but the table wasn't even set up. Took 20 minutes to get drinks at the bar with only 2 other patrons. Over an hour later we were still waiting for our first course. Dont waste your time or money.

The White Hart in Castle Cary is and will always be my local. I've moved away now but the second I return I'll be popping in for a pint. Despite the clientele being largely coke-heads and dropkicks, it's all part of the Castle Cary charm. Locals are friendly and you're never without the company of some cool drunks.

This is a traditional pub but with a welcome. Comfortable-enough. Old: the passageway back to the toilets has a very quirky slope. Friendly service. Coffee was poor and very weak: served with a biscuit.

Being a bright sunny afternoon, this pub looked very inviting with it's outside green seating area. The dog was happy on the lawn and didn't mind the performing troubadour too much. Performer was actually rather good and broke his set up with breaks that kept a nice balance.Staff did table service of bar snacks and it was all jolly good

On a drive around looking at property and felt the urge for lunch. Many other places were closed, luckily this pub was open so we popped in. At first it appeared a bit disconcerting, but once we got staff attention it felt a bit more welcoming. Typical pub grub, burger, scampi etc was had. It was all tasty and served quickly, if a little sparse on the accompaniments. The price was reasonable as well.

We met some friends for a wander around Castle Cary and picked The White Hart for lunch, decided upon by it's attractive looking beer garden. The food was traditional pub fayre. I had a (home made) chicken and mushroom pie, a proper pie 😁 not a bowl of stew with a pastry lid, very tasty, we also had ham egg and chips, home made burger and chips plus scampi. All good quality, tasty and exceptional value.

Love the idea sitting at the bar and talking to local landlord and other customers over a pint of local ale. Typical small town pub with loads of character and a good selection of beers on tap as well as traditional cider. Also cater for the hungry and Sunday menu reasonably priced.

It looked OK from the road, so with difficulty we managed to park in their yard. I went in, asked if they served lunches, and went off to the loo. I came back to find my husband sitting at a table, upon which was a huge economy pack of loo rolls, next to the open kitchen door. A fire extinguisher stood next to it, and several staff members were chatting round a laptop. Our tea came with a pot of hot water, a welcome touch. Our meals took a very long time to come. We were pestered all the time by flies. My curry of the day, pork, consisted of lumps of fat and was tasteless, unless you count the rice, which tasted odd. My husband literally could not penetrate the solid crust on his steak and kidney pie. I suggested he turn it upside down and attack it from the bottom. It was extaordinarily hard, but the meat was nice. We ate a little, our appetites by now quite gone, and paid our bill.

Visited this pub on the way home from a day at Weymouth for an evening meal. Good range of fare on offer and a nice friendly welcome. Not high dining but everything we ordered was well cooked, tasty, well presented and good value. I had the five bean chilli (perhaps a little more chilli needed for my taste) and my wife the Lasagne which came with a lovely side salad. All in all a lovely meal in a friendly pub in a beautiful little old market town. Well worth a visit.

After owing thousands of pounds in rent to my very patient dad who gave him multiple chances, the owner of Riverside Cafe Ilminster, Ethan Parker was rightly asked to leave the premises. This is how he left the building, still owing thousands. He’s moving his “business” to Axminster very soon under a new name. If you happen to be a landlord in that area then do be aware. Do not trust this extremely immature boy.
