We had a nice Sunday lunch at the pub. Unfortunately they no longer serve Sunday roast and had somewhat a limited menu, but we enjoyed the food we ordered. Servers were attentive and friendly, atmosphere was lovely, had a fire going to keep us warm. The pub is dog-friendly. Would recommend the pub for a nice lunch and a pint after a long walk in the countryside.

Having stayed here before we knew we would want to come back. Our next visit didn’t disappoint. Beautiful countryside walks, 10 mins drive from Bath, great food & a lovely live fire in the Inn. The bedrooms are fantastic, and the staff are also superb. Richard the owner was very friendly & approachable, and particularly James, who was really friendly and helpful. We’ll be back again for sure! Thanks guys & Happy Christmas.

Lovely place to stay. The rooms were beautiful with a comfy bed and everything you needed. Bathroom was good, with a powerful shower, although there were a few little bits that needed finishing in the bathroom and there was a little leak from the radiator. Ate in the restaurant one evening. Food was amazing! Although on the slowish side but appreciate the guy was on his own trying to serve 10 different tables

. . ¡arrancar!

I was due to stay here for a one night stay. Travelling 4 hours it seemed worth it as evidently the place looks beautiful. I was mortified however when on the day of my stay I received a email to say that it had been cancelled. I called the property certain it was a misunderstanding, but no, I was met with a very indifferent young man who confirmed there had been a misunderstanding and there was no room for us. Obviously panicked I said I booked it weeks ago, I have travelled 4 hours surely you can't just cancel to which he replied all I can do is apologise, again rather indifferently. I understand misunderstandings occur however there was no concern for the fact that we now had nowhere to stay, no sincerity, no recommendations just absolute carelessness. If this suggests anything about the way they treat customers that actually arrive I seriously would avoid the "services" here.

Some weeks ago we booked a table for dinner on Xmas eve for 8 of our family. On arrival we were told that only the 'Classic' menu was available, meaning broadly 3 main course choices - dishes like ham, egg and chips or a burger - fine for a quick lunch but a pathetic choice for a pre-Christmas family dinner. At the point of booking over the phone or in a subsequent call to change the time of the booking, there was an opportunity to be told that the normal a la carte menu would not be available but nothing was said. The staff showed no interest and with a shrug of the shoulders, indicated very clearly that we were not welcome so we took the unsubtle hint and went elsewhere.

I hate this time of year when a lot of places have their room temperature just above freezing (well, for me!). There was a beautiful log fire and we were told we could not have the table next to it as it was reserved. So spent the whole meal looking at an empty table next to a warm fire when I was freezing... Not great. So obviously that would influence my feelings about the place and won't return in the winter. An automatic door closer would be great as well...Otherwise, my friend did not really enjoy her Caesar's salad, she did not like the dressing. Lots of greenery. My other friends main course was very small (miso and pearl barley mushroom). My own beetroot risotto was fine and I enjoyed it. May return in the future.

Return visit - what a shame. Despite pre booking, no advance warning or advice on arrival of just how many main course options had run out before our 7 p.m. supper. I was being entertained by house guests visiting from Scotland so I chose the venue & was embarrassed. We all resorted to 2 starters each followed by dessert. I had the clear impression that this was not an isolated incident. On a Sunday lunch visit 2 weeks earlier there had been no lime cordial but otherwise the catering was fine although priced on the high side.

A very disappointing visit, I’d booked dinner for my family (age rage 4-75) we arrived to a very cold dining room, my father in law offered to light the log fire as there was an abundance of logs next to the fire and we were all wrapped in our coats, wandering how the room could be made warmer. The room filled with smoke so all the windows were opened making it even colder. The bar staff then choose to argue with us that the fire was smoking due to cold air nothing to do with the obvious fact the chimney needs cleaning etc etc

Not especially friendly or welcoming, generally uncommunicative. A pint, a tea, and a soup was almost £13, so far too much, really. I fancied the rib-eye steak on the specials board, but at almost £30 with sauce, went to the chip shop instead.

I booked The Wheelwright Arms on our trip to the Bath area as I wanted to make our stay as authentic as possible. By that I mean I did not wish to stay in a large modern hotel. Externally the establishment is very quaint and appealing. The bedroom was quite small, the bed very comfortable and a well stocked bathroom. However, there is no soundproofing from one room to the next. We heard full telephone conversations, bathroom being used and the TV and every other movement from within the neighbouring room. The breakfasts were good but the evening meal we had was a terrible let down, none of our courses were eaten in full and at no stage were we asked if everything was to our satisfaction. On leaving the restaurant following the meal we put the charge on our room and were then asked if everything was ok, my response was 'fine'. You may feel my response was rude but if you are in a Michelin approved establishment, I would expect some kind of friendly interaction between staff and guests but there was none at all! 'How are you enjoying your stay? Where are you off to today? Did you have a good day? How is your meal madam?" ...just an example of things that could of been said, but none were!

My husband stayed in a room by the car park with people coming and going, banging on doors, until the early hours. My son and I shared a twin room the other side of the building, the bathroom window was opposite the kitchens and had no covering. There appears to be a problem with the water pipes, they banged the whole night - so loud I had to turn the TV on all night to try and drown the noise- it sounded like someone was in the bathroom. We left at 6:30 am, luckily we had settled the bill after dinner the previous evening.

Myself and two friends met at the Wheelwrights Arms for lunch. We have all lived in the Bath area for many years, and decided to meet here given the recent review in the Bath weekend magazine (20.7.17) and it being a mid way point for us all. We were disappointed on several levels:Very limited lunch menu for light lunch - essentially a choice of a few sandwiches, fish and chips. Consequently two of us ordered sandwiches, one ordered a starter from the restaurant menu. No choice given as to type of bread for sandwiches - our sandwiches were made with white bread. (the menu we were given did not reflect the choices provided on the sample on line menu)Overpriced menu - our sandwiches were £6.50 each, the starter was £7.50. Poor quality and small portions - the white bread did not taste fresh, there was very little filling (fish fingers and salmon being the sandwich filler) and a very small portion of salad leaves and crisps with the sandwiches. The starter was tiny! We were shocked. It came with no bread. Literally two mouthfuls and it was gone. Poor service and lack of interest from the two members of staff working that day (25.7.17). We expressed our disappointment and surprise at the size of the starter - two mouthfuls of thin sliced fish with some grated celery underneath. The response was something to the effect 'fish is expensive. What do you expect?' We requested some bread to go with it. Initially the staff member said he would return with a basket of bread. Over five minutes later he returned with two thinly cut stale pieces of white bread with a bit of butter on the side. He said nothing, just put it on the table and went. We were speechless. Our experience does not reflect the views expressed in previous reviews on trip advisor. Its as if we were in a different venue! I can honestly say I have never eaten such a poor quality lunch in a venue in Bath and the surrounding area in all the years I have lived here - 27yrs. My friends agreed with me. A suggestion for the future - given the tiny portion size of the starter, it might be helpful for the staff to point this out to the customer, especially if they are ordering it as a lunch option, as we clearly were with our order. The customer then has the opportunity to select something a bit more substantial. On the plus side, the pub is beautifully situated, we sat outside in a very pleasant courtyard, and spent over 2hrs chatting in comfortable surroundings.

I stayed here with my wife for one night and wished we could have stayed longer. The restaurant serves delicious food. We had an enjoyable three course meal which was a very untypical pub meal. More of a high class restaurant really, presented really well, unusual combination of ingredients and absolutely delicious. There was a multiple choice for breakfast, something for everyone. The room we had was very comfortable with some nice finishing touches such as bathrobes, sweets and biscuits. I don't believe there is wheelchair access to the rooms so it would be advisable to check before booking. There are some beautiful walks to be had but beware that it is a very hilly location and you'd need to be pretty fit. The canal at Brassknocker Basin is twenty minutes walk and well worth a visit but we just missed getting a cuppa at the Cafe there because it shuts at 5.00 pm. There is a Park and Ride to Bath City centre just 10 minutes drive. Also a bus service which stops right next to the pub.

What a great location - surrounded by wonderful walks and bike rides, and walking distance from Bath itself. Add to this really good food and service and you have a great place to base yourself, to eat and to drink. They offer a 2 course meal for £13 with limited choice of dishes, and an extensive a la carte menu as well. The chick pea curry was good, as was the fish and chips. Highly recommended.

We went as a party of 13 and while initially the guy behind the bar seemed like he'd rather be anywhere but there serving us things did get better. We were fortunate to have been looked after at the table by an extremely nice waitress who made us feel really welcome. It's a shame to say that I find good service is hard to find these days, but such is not the case here. The food was ok. I had the venison burger, which was burt on one side and over cooked through, leaving it pretty dry. It would have benefited from a bit of pig fat through really. However the risotto balls I had to start were good. The guy next to me had soup and it was really only a little more that flavour, slightly creamy water. In contrast the ragu he had to follow was really tasty. Overall a good experience, but the super service made up for the average food.

Stayed for a long weekend and was very clean and comfortable. Only moan was the pillows were too soft but using 3 was ok. Food very good and not overfacing. Shame no locals just drinking to chat to - more an eat and leave type of pub. 2 beers on and kept in good condition and 2 ciders as well which was a bonus. Would definitely visit again

The Wainwright's Arms is a traditional pub with an incredibly welcoming feel. It is a little off the beaten track; side-winding the inclining streets to find it was interesting! The views are simply magnificent and it boasts incredible vistas of the surrounding countryside. The bar staff are incredibly friendly and the bar has a super range of beers, ales and tipples. This is a great venue to visit after a jaunt to Bath or to relax at the weekend. Great place with a warm atmosphere. Outside seating is great for gazing over the views.

Waves of affluence spread out like ripples in a pond from Bath into the Cotswolds and this lovely pub in a village dominated by the buildings of a boarding school has been touched by that effect and then some. The young staff are lovely , a bottle of Chilean Pinot was excellent and the pork chop is a beautifully cooked and seasoned dish. They try to be different with the cheese, avoiding (just) the boringly predictable cheddar,Stilton,Brie unholy trinity and in fact the only probkem we had with the food was the salsa which accompanies the mackerel which wasn't ( chopped tomatoes with vinegar does not a salsa make). The main room is a very omfortable, beautiful place with a great old fireplace. The prices are on the extortionate side. £13 plus for a baked Camembert , mackerel (the cheapest fish in the sea ) over £10 and no accompanying vegetables. £3.50 if you want a small dish of chips ? Btw, they are short changing the staff by adding service only to the food which means a £65 bill only attracts a £4 service charge. Still, you won't be disappointed by the experience just a lot lighter in the wallet

We took our son here for his birthday and thought based on the prices that the food would be top notch. However when our Sunday roasts came the Yorkshire puddings were overcooked and dry, the lamb was so fatty that I couldn't eat it and the roast potatoes were unpleasant. We mentioned this to our waitress and she murmured something about telling the chef but didn't seem particularly concerned or interested. I have had better food at a Harvester for considerably less. The pub itself is nice but the food would have been disappointing in an averagely priced pub.

We noticed this as we were passing through. We came back to it for lunch and are so happy we did! Fantastic food. It has much more artisan local craft than most of the restaurants we have visited with the laid back atmosphere of a pub (which was great to visit with kids). There are board games in the corner and great pints to drink as well. Don't miss stopping by!

This pub is tucked away in a secluded village. Surrounded by beautiful countryside. In the summer it's great to sit and relax in the garden with a cold local cider. The food is reasonable my wife had asparagus with ham egg starter while I had a potted crab. Pretty good. I decided to have the steak special. Although a fine piece of meat it was over cooked I asked for medium rare and got nearer well done.My wife's meal lamb was great so learning is the same only order steak in a steak joint why can't I just learn.

Enjoying a bike ride in the fine weather. Decided to stop here for a late lunch. Pleasantly greeted by the sound of live music and the smell of fresh BBQ delights being served. Friendly helpful staff, slaving over the BBQ and taking drinks and strawberries and cream orders; all in the name of charity! What a great event, popular but not overly so and a very unexpected find on a cycle ride. Thanks.

However we were disappointed with the food; my husband has fish, chips and mushy peas, nice fish and chips but the mushy peas were cold. I had a mushroom, spinach and herb risotto, nice mushrooms, I didn't really notice the spinach as it was chopped really fine but there was loads of really strong cheese in it which over powered the taste. Unfortunately we decided to pay up and go elsewhere for our desert.

Me and my boyfriend stayed here for 2 nights whilst on our trip in Bath and thoroughly enjoyed it. The bedroom was of a brilliant size and the bed was incredibly comfortable, everything was clean and very well presented and there was daily room service if wanted. The staff were very lovely and welcoming and the food in the pub just opposite the bedroom was splendid! We both had absolutely nothing to complain about and would definitely recommend to others.

Met a couple of colleagues for dinner here. We were waiting for another member of our party so things took a little while to get started and a waitress took our orders. She also took a drink order but that took an age come. Once my main arrived we managed to get the missing drink as well as a jug of water we requested. I had a fish stew, it was OK but not special, it had muscles as part of the dish but most of these were closed or partially closed so I didn't eat them. There was a reasonable amount of fish in the stew so it wasn't a complete disappointment. The desert I asked for wasn't available so I opted for the pannacott which agiain was ok but nothing special.Overall the food was fine and the people serving were friendly and helpful but they were clearly overwhelmed by the numbers, it needed more staff. I think for the price and quality of food average sums it up perfectly.

Only had to stay one night near bath on business, found this place on tripadvisor and booked for half price via booking.com. What a find! One of those archetypal country pubs that you'd take a foreigner to, to show them what English pubs are all about! The accommodation is to drawer, very clean and everything you need is provided. Even has really good wifi! And to top it all off, I've just eaten the best steak I've had for many a long year! Will definitely be back with my wife for a weekend!

great service, friendly helpful hosts ,freshly cooked food.My husband thoroughly enjoyed his meal however personally I would have preferred beef to have been cooked rather than rare. I was immediately told that this could be flash fried to achieve a better result. The proportions were good and hot. The background music was not obtrusive and the log fire was welcoming. The wine and real ale were very good.We stayed in the premises and would recommend to anyone, we did achieve a late rate booking which included a very good breakfast. The rooms are extremely spacious and well equipped to include bath robes. I would imagine a booking in the summer would be delightful with the outdoor patio area and views over the countryside. The journey into Bath is only five minutes. Located in a quiet village but easy access to places of interest. Happy to visit again

This is a really nice pub in Monkton Combe, just outside Bath. The staff are lovely and friendly and all in we had a lovely evening (a large group of 12). But some of the food was a bit disappointing. The special 'pheasant' was way overcooked and dry and one of the guests had a steak which was tough - either down to the meet itself, the cooking, or lack of resting. We may have been unlucky and at the end of the day, would go back and try gain.

This is a fantastic 'gastro-pub' in a beautiful village. We recently stayed in the area, and the hotel fayre wasn't to our taste. We therefore ate in the Wheelwrights both evenings. The food is of terrific quality, and brilliantly cooked. My Sirloin steak was cooked as well as I can ever remember tasting! The pub is an interesting building with lots of different style 'zones' throughout the public area. Both evenings the pub had a very welcome open fire, which made the whole area feel very cosy.Booking was very easy due to the use of the 'book-a-table' app. The staff we met were exceptional, none of this "how is your meal" interruption nonsense, just happy people who genuinely want you to enjoy the food. As an aside, there are some brilliant photos of the location filming of the Ealing Comedy "The Titfield Thunderbolt", part of which was filmed in the area. What a great place - we will return soon, and will sample the B&B facilities. Well done to the owners and staff, this kind of consistent service must take a huge amount of work and dedication.

A cosy village pub, with accomodation of a superior quality and fantastic views of the green, green Midford Valley (did I mention, it's very green round here?). Thanks to the accomodation offered, the pub is open all day, so you can catch a quiet moment out of hours should you wish. Clientele consists of dependable and well disposed regulars, a selection of current guests and, at the weekend, representatives from the school staff next door, plus Bathonians passing through. Local beverages on offer; a fancier than usual menu (my son recommends the cheesy chips for the less adventurous); background jazz and, on important sporting occasions, a TV screen cunningly revealed from behind a superb Joanna Cope painting. Friendly service (& conversation should you engage); Wifi available; a selection of daily papers and local magazines on the bar; an outside garden/patio; off road parking - thank goodness. Church Lane is narrow, so best to park in the pub car park, not outside someone's house for maximum good neighbourliness. and to retain your wing mirrors... Not cheap, but I'm not sure you can 'buy' this kind of establishment - especially in winter when the fog rolls down the hill and the open fires beckon.

Pretty pub with nice decor & feel to it. Staff polite and attentive. My friend and I had the sirloin steak which unfortunately was chewy with gristle & served with fries & a heap of watercress no sauce. We did not complain so perhaps unfair that we did not give the chef a chance to rectify the meal. If in that area exact again I would go back and give the food a second chance but with so many other options in Bath...temptation to try other venues wins!
