What a disappointment. No children's starters, no cheese or soup starters, several main course items not available. We weren't told any of this before ordering, would have been helpful to be told when given menus so we didn't waste time deciding on food choices that weren't available. Asked for wine... they didn't have any, sold out. What we did have was ok, but a touch on the pricey side. Whilst I couldn't complain about what we got, the pub lacked good customer service, when I went to pay the bill the waitress was too busy washing dishes in the kitchen to see so had to go into the bar area to pay. Not sure when they sold out of everything as we were there at 6pm on a Saturday evening and at the time of arrival the only people in the restaurant.

Having some time to kill in Abbey Town, I was lured in by the sign outside which promised "Real Ale". However when I asked what real ales were available, the landlord didn't even seem to know what a real ale even was. Instead he offered me a pint of keg John Smiths 😭. As I was only there for a quiet afternoon pint, I can't comment on the food. But after gulping down a very mediocre pint of Strongbow, I left feeling more than a little dissatisfied. If it were not for the false advertising I would have just gone somewhere else which did sell real ale. Service was good. Atmosphere was lacking, and If you are looking for good quality well kept beer, then I am afraid I can't recommend the Wheatsheaf. Hopefully the food makes up for it.

Fantastic meal at the Wheatsheaf Inn. I contacted the pub on short notice for a table of 10 adults and they were very helpful and got us a table. The food was great, portion sizes were large and food was tasty. The drink choice was also fantastic. However, the highlight of the pub is definitely the staff. All staff members were very hospitable and provided great service. Thanks for a great experience

Attention to detail began has soon has we entered the bar with such a warm welcome given by Rose who proved to be has attentive taking our order and whilst serving too. Brie wedges were fabulous, only to be surpassed by the turkey dish to follow. If that wasn’t enough already, the chocolate fudge cake was the best I’ve ever had the pleasure of eating. Top marks to the kitchen and all the team out front and especially Rose who by this time was taking care of a customers baby too. We visited on the 1st of August 2019. Nestled away down the winding roads lays the Wheatsheaf Inn at Abbeytown. We had been to the holiday village of Silloth and decided to venture out somewhere new on the last evening. We came across the Wheatsheaf via word of mouth from a local veterinarian. The place is very clean and accommodating. There I a good choice of meals and the food was well above the average bar meal. We would definitely visit again. A point to note. The land lady was extremely helpful by unlocking the rear doors so our young party member Zack could play outside yet be in our view. Thanks again.

My Husband had the beer battered fish and chips (HUGE) and very tasty. I had the home made steak pie. Locally sourced meat and the chef is the local butcher's son (also very friendly). OK, so where to start. We arrived(family of 4) around 530ish and the welcome was friendly. Got seated straight away perhaps this was the second mistake we made this evening. On several recommendations we decided to visit to see for ourselves. Staying in Silloth we found out the hard way that there are very few good places to eat! So we sat down the first thing we saw were the ant traps in the restaurant, second the used beer coasters on the tables and third a menu that had definitely seen better days! So we ordered the meal and all seemed to be going well, well as it can be trying to entertain a 2 and 5 year old. No crayons or kids colouring in,well at least nothing was offered. The staff were friendly but with absolutely no customer service skills at all. The only person who seemed to have any personality was the chef who asked if we wanted the kids meals out when they were ready, thank you for asking. When the adult meals came we were a bit underwhelmed to be honest. I had the chicken served with a leek and pancheta sauce, rice seasonal veg and overcooked chips. The sauce was tasty but the quality of the chips were shocking. My partner ordered the chicken fillet burger with no bun or mozzarella and served with a bbq sauce. Her fish was not good quality at all. The chicken was completely inferior quality, full of veins and this gave it an appearance of it being undercooked. It was a horrible piece of chicken. What made the whole experience worse was the fact NOT 1 PERSON CAME NEAR US TO CHECK ON HOW OUR MEAL WAS GOING. On clearing we were asked how things were and I suggested that the chicken was not good quality. We would have had a sweet but this put us off completely. Service was lacking in customer service standards. No atmosphere, lack of chat, lack personality, no empathy nothing! We asked for the bill and it took them 20 minutes for them to write it out! We don't have a copy of what we had, weren't offered a receipt. Listen folks it might have been an off day but my god what an off day!! Harrisons Food group need to have a good look at this place as it could be so much more than what it is. As a General Manager of a restaurant in Glasgow if my customers had had what we had tonight I would lose my job. Sort it out guys it was atrocious!!

Visiting my sister who raved about this place we booked for 8 fairly early on a Saturday evening. I then read some recent reviews slating the service. We arrived and were seated on time. The menu was traditional pub food; the specials sounded better. A bit disappointed that the pie of the day was unavailable but there was a choice of 3 or 4 mains for my gluten free niece. Chips.....far too many. Husband ordered curry I ordered the stir fry beef. Nice enough food but I really would have preferred a decent portion of rice rather than a few grains and chips. The rest of the party enjoyed their food. The service was good, OK so the waitress had to check with the chef over the gluten free thing but that's not a bad thing. Overall it was OK but nothing special.

Booked a table for 4 adults and 3 children on Saturday 4th August 2018. Myself and husband ordered a ham salad with chips. To say we were disappointed is an understatement! There was hardly any ham, we both had a quarter of a tomato and I had 1 slice of cucumber, no egg. When my husband asked if it was under new management he was told no, but there was someone different in the kitchen that night. My husband told the waitress how disappointed we were with the paltry plates we'd been served and all she said was "sorry about that". We have eaten at The Wheatsheaf on quite a few occasions as we only lived 3 miles down the road and to be honest, this is the first time we've ever had cause to complain. Everyone else's meal was spot on, but I doubt we'll be visiting again!

We all had beef which was nice and tender, 2 good sized slices. My only negative is that the portion sizes were on the small sizes. We visited as a foursome for the second time but yet again three of us were served food on chipped plates - come on - lets have more direction and input from whoever wants to make this work as a business- just had conversation with a friend who was intimidated by gang of people outside kitchen door swearing and using foul language last night - not good for a new business - I'll watch this space before returning.

Lovely, clean restaurant. Great menu to choose from - I had the Lasagne and it was beautiful. Lovely interior and great, friendly staff. Very, very reasonably priced without being cheap. Highly recommended and will definitely go again.

The food is great here. We had the breaded Brie and the prawn cocktail (needed bread which was forthcoming). The main meal arrived one hour thirty five minutes after our arrival, so don't be in a hurry. The waitress was lovely and working as hard as she could. I didn't mind but other people clearly did. I would suggest the owners accept the bookings they can reasonably serve. The sausage was a big hit, the roast pork was ok but didn't blow me away. Vegetables were well cooked and the chips are homemade. The kids meals are excellent and the kids desserts were impressive. If the issue of the wait was addressed this would be a very impressive place.

We visited on a Wednesday and we're glad we had phoned ahead to book. Pleasant modern decor and a friendly atmosphere. The staff were attentive. The steak pie was delicious except for the pastry which I think had been microwaved so was soggy. I still enjoyed the filling though. My partners steak was a bit over cooked. We would go again but choose different things.

We visited on a busy sunday evening and was reluctant at firat due to being here in the past and not having a good experience. Since it is now under new management things have certainly improved. The food is divine and huge portions. Would return here in a second.

Visited for family meal. Used to be owned by my aunt and uncle. Some changes. Locally sourced produce. Food served piping hot. Black pudding and bacon starter with pepper sauce interesting but worked. Good portion sizes could be too big. Friendly staff and good value for what we got.

We went here for a family meal. Halfway through our main meal we were told that they needed the table as soon as we had finished. The waitress came back on several occasions to tell us this. We were only in the restaurant for 1hr 20mins. It turned out they had overbooked the restaurant and were anxious to get us out. We didn't even get time to finish our bottle of wine. Absolutely disgraceful customer service. it ruined our family reunion.

On a very busy holiday weekend, our party of five was attended to quickly and politely, with our drinks and first courses arriving promptly. These included the black pudding and bacon stack in a peppercorn sauce which was delicious. Our choice of roasts of the day followed (lamb & beef) and both were very tasty. Meals concluded with a selection of sweets that were all well received. This eatery should be proud of its high level of food quality and service, achieved on a particularly busy Sunday which included a large party gathering for a local Christening. Well done all concerned and we certainly intend to re-visit.

My wife and I were up in Cumbria visiting family, and my mother chose this place for Sunday lunch. The starters and mains were great in terms of portion size, timing and taste. Wonderful service from the young waiting staff, too. The decor is a bit old hat, but it is certainly one of the best Sunday lunches I have had for a while. The lamb was absolutely delicious.

I had prebooked table for 7, lovely light clean dining area. Staff very welcoming and accommodating. Able to mix and match food for children without hesitation. No doubt they would have done same for adults. The food was really good - top class really, reasonably priced. Lovely atmosphere. I really liked the way the food was presented,If food is presented well, with attention to detail, it proves to me that the providers have pride in their produce and want to treat their patrons with respect.

After visiting this pub for Sunday lunch with my family we came away very disappointed, I ordered a starter and 2 Sunday lunches , my mother ordered a vegetarian lasagne only to be told nearly 45 later they had none left. My mam and dad recived there food 1 1/2 hours later and me and my partner were left with no starter or food ??? When my mam and dad had finished their food I went inside and told the man working that I would not be wanting aMy food. I had waited the best part of 2 hours in a nearly empty pub! My partner left a review on there Facebook page and below is their response (I'm 9 month pregnant by the way and don't eat mcdonnalds) very rude ! Won't be back !!

After being a little disappointed at the restaurant on the holiday complex we were staying at, we remembered passing this pub on the way & we decided to try the restaurant on our last night of our weekend away. Don't be put off by the slightly dated decor as the food & the hospitality are fantastic. I chose the rib eye steak which was cooked perfectly as were my daughter & daughter-in -laws & the homemade chips were fab. My son & son - in- law both chose the mixed grill ,which were the biggest I have ever seen! My 5yr old grandson had a roast beef dinner & announced that it was made by the best chef ever !! The waitress was so nice to all of us & it seemed like nothing was too much trouble for her .Definitely worth a visit . Very reasonable prices too. A great end to our weekend .

We stayed here for 2 nights and I cannot recommend this place highly enough. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. The rooms are large, bright with some spectacular views and those special touches such as little toiletries for your use. The bath in our room was so opulent I could have stayed in there all evening. The dining area is quite niche you can have quiet discreet corners for a romantic evening or more open. The food is excellent- if I had 1 thing to say that was negative, it would be that I wouldn’t have a starter so I could have a dessert, I found each time I did I just didn’t have room to have one! The main thing for me was the staff. The staff quite simply made it for me. NOTHING was too much trouble, they were friendly, welcoming and went above and beyond , yet at the same time let us be. If you want somewhere, where you can be comfortable, away from it all and have excellent accommodation and food this is the place.

Sad to say that our trip there was a a big disappointment when it come to the food. We all had beef, it was dry and chewy. When we talked to the waiter, we have been told that is the way the chef does it. It is a shame that they only sell well done cuts of meat...

My wife and I went for a trip to Lowther Castle and Gardens with the in-laws, and after such awful weather we decided to travel to Cockermouth to treat ourselves to the excellent Fredricks which we've visited many times before. We started with the seafood platter / selection with a portion of chips for the young one. It's a great selection of items for fish lovers! After, we ordered some lovely main dishes, enough for 3 adults and 2 kids (1 kids meal of pizza and chips!) Lovely meal to end of evening. Will be back when next in the area.
