Arrived to find a decent car park which is always handy. Upon checking in, the welcome was warm, to a traditional looking hostelry with loads of character and the guy who showed us to our room was really sweet. The room was cosy, clean and had a decent bathroom with plenty of hot water and a brilliant shower. The setting is beautiful, just off the main road but you would never know as it is really peaceful and a lovely view across to the village church. The bar and restaurant staff were a joy and nothing was too much trouble for them, they even welcomed the “lively” dog that came in tow. A good selection of drinks were available. Breakfast was to die for, delicious. We didn’t eat in the restaurant as we were visiting family but will be sure to next time. Can’t recommend The Wheatsheaf enough, and amazing value as well.

Lovely local pub to us, we walk from Arnside to eat there. Great food and service, really nice old fashioned pub. Their nachos to share are the best for miles. Good choice of veggie food too.

We booked this pub through a friend's recommendation for a large party of 10 to have Sunday late lunch at the end of Sept. I booked it 15.09.24 and I was told someone would contact me the week before with our pre orders. No one contacted me. I then contacted them myself on 25.09.24 and was cut off half way through giving them my order, I then rang back, the waitress put the phone down on me/cut me off - after 3 phone calls the pre order was rang through. We arrived to be told they had not got our booking and knew nothing about us. We all thought as a family the bar manager was rude and not very apologetic..we were all dressed up excited on our holiday for this meal which put a right dampener on us. He told us he could put us upstairs - one of us has crutches.. he then said upstairs was full and if he had known about our booking it would have been different!! Eventually he said you can have that corner over there with 3 tables that we had to arrange ourselves. Terrible service - as a party of 10 we were limited to going anywhere else at that point to eat at that time of day. We sat down and low and behold he found our pre order! Enough said. The main food was ok - puddings delicious. The waiting on girls great apart from moving our plates whilst one of our party still eating so we had to tell them. They did apologise for this as she was new. I wouldn't eat here again which was a real shame. I think the manager lacks in manners and communication and if you book in advance good luck!

We had a 3 day short break dinner bed and breakfast 20th to 23rd September 2024. First of all this is a wonderful old building about 400 years old. Our room was on the 3rd floor up 2 flights of steep stairs. Bedroom tastefully furnished and decorated with a great shower room. Breakfast was tasty with both a buffet for fruit and cereal and toast + various warm Cooked options I had avocado and scrambled eggs which was devine. We had a 3 course evening meal homemade soup lentil dhal and tiramisu ice cream it was lovely and good value for money. Staff were attentive caring but not overly fussing. Katie and Lucy were great 👍🏻

Me and my partner came Wednesday evening had booked a table and it took a short while to get a drink but soon realised the Gentleman doing the bar and seated us was the only member of staff on that night. It was a pleasure to watch him and was entertaining have him serve us and everyone around. I don't actually know how he did it every table in the restaurant was full and he managed to tend to everyone so efficiently. He did apologise about not being able to clear the vacant tables near by but said I'm looking after you I hope that is what matters most. It was! an absolute joy we had the pies that where one of the best we have ever had in a pub and actually we where saying in general. We tried to give him a tipand he said we share it all together. He did ask us to leave a nice review when we had a chance and name mention himself as Culum I hope I got it right apologies if not but he was fabulous and hope next time we come back we are served by that lovely gentleman it would be a joy.

A warm welcome and we were shown to our table. Prompt and attentive service. We each had a starter and main course. Very sensible prices and lovely menu to choose from. Having booked the day before no record could be found. Severl other groups were given the same news. Systems problem? The alternatives were upstairs or outside (for a disabled guest of 94?). They claimed that I’d never called so we rang the number used previously and surprise, thier phone rang! A table was then magically found. Food was reasonable but the beef was dry and tough. Disappointed

Recently stopped over at the Wheatsheaf. Lovely old property. Excellent restaurant for dinner, food was delicious and great service. The serving staff were professional and friendly. Good location, nearby walks upto the Fairy steps and opposite a beautiful church from 1600's. Breakfast was tasty but little portions eg: only 1 x chipolata sausage as part of a full English. The room was tastefully decorated the bed had immaculate white linen. Sadly no chocolate brownies as the tub was empty, rubbish from the previous occupants was tied up but still in the bathroom bin and the shower needed more of a clean as still hair on the shower floor which I cleared away. The carpeted hallway to the bedrooms was not vacuumed during our 2 night stay which was disappointing as it definitely did need doing (or replacing) as it gives the place a musty smell. I would still recommend this property as the staff and service and food quality was very good. We can only assume the negative points mentioned were missed due to time constraints.

I’m really saddened after having our first al fresco meal of the year and choosing here to do it. We couldn’t get a table indoors so thought why not eat outside, it was a beautiful spring day. We ordered two rump steak baguettes with onions and blue cheese sauce with a portion of chunky chips to share and a child’s fish chips and garden peas. We ordered a pint and a half of beer also. This came to over £40, I have no issue paying this for nice food. The food came in paper take out trays with only one napkin and one sachet of mayonnaise between 3 people and the most hideous mushy peas despite asking for garden. My son’s fish was revolting, the batter was like soggy Yorkshire pudding with lumps of flour in chips cooked in what tasted like old oil. Our steak baguettes were anything but a baguette and my first one came with half its lid missing so I asked for a replacement. It wasn’t a baguette, it wasn’t even ciabatta and there was no blue cheese to be seen. Nobody checked back on our food and sadly while there the table had an entire tray of drinks poured on them, that weren’t even theirs and no really apology or compensation from waiting staff. It’s a shame as it’s a beautiful place but that the worst food and service I’ve seen for a very long time. Photo shows a £10.50 steak “baguette”.

What a charming place for a low key, delicious birthday dinner. We hadn’t been to the Wheatsheaf since the refurb, and we loved the new look, trad but modern at the same time, with its friendly festoons of dried hops. Their take on a lamb tagine, succulently cooked meat in a rich broth with beautifully spiced couscous was v enjoyable. Others had pulled pork and falafel, both earning a thumbs up. Pud was little parcels of spiced apple with ice cream, perfect size for full tums. Price absolutely reasonable. Waiting staff so friendly and lovely, and they didn’t know it was my birthday so it wasn’t special for the day. Only downer was it was slightly chilly in our area, but only slightly. Loved it. Thanks.

I had high expectations of this place from reviews. It’s very cosy inside and lovely decor. Ordered roasts and were told there was no Yorkshires which we said was fine and would have expected money off or substitute at least.. The food came out and there wasn’t much on the plate and nothing really substituted from lack of Yorkshire and for nearly £16 we expected a bit more than one rather thin slice of beef and tablespoon of mash and a few other bits in small portions. It was lovely quality however but a real shame it wasn’t much of it for the price. But 20 mins after, roasts came out to another table and it had Yorkshires on? We weren’t really happy about this and for paying the same price as those who actually got them was a bit of a joke. We come to the lakes quite often but sadly won’t return here. For drinks maybe but food no. The staff seemed friendly enough especially the one who was running the bar was attentive.

The inside and outside of the pub, even the car park, are full of quality, character and heritage. The menu isn’t too long, which is always a good sign. The food was home made, top quality, and good value. Just like every pub, cafe and hotel just now, they could have done with a couple more staff but hospitality staff are like hens teeth just now. The staff they had were very professional, kept smiling and delivering great service when they must have been shattered. We were a bit late getting to our table because the previous guests were still there, but once we got to our table everything was fine. The menu was interesting, not the usual pub fare, and the drinks choice was excellent too, rhubarb lemonade was so good. I definitely recommend the steak pie, the fish and chips was very good too. I saw another table get onion rings and they were vast and very tempting! Finally, the canine patrons were top notch and very good company, which is always a high priority for me.

Sorry to say that this was not a good night for the Wheatsheaf. This was highly recommended to us so was expecting more. They seemed to be very understaffed with only one young man who was trying his very best but really needed more staff. There was another young lady but she didn’t seem to do a lot at all. Our starter was fine (dough balls) but our mains well! The young man told us that the chef didn’t think they were up to standard so wanted to do them again. Strange that from where we were sitting that we could see into the kitchen area and there was a plate of food smashed on the floor - one of our mains I presume. When they did arrive the mushy peas were stone cold and the chips pale, not crispy and could definitely have done with another minute or two in the fryer - not triple cooked. The fish was hot and tasty but slightly greasy nothing that a pat with some kitchen roll would not have sorted. I think we were very unlucky going by other revues and the recommendation we received. Oh, and the ladies toilet wasn’t working properly.

We are always delighted to return to the Wheatsheaf, and recognise times are difficult in hospitality, but would love to get the i’s dotted and t’s crossed. The food (Sunday lunch) was excellent value, good portions and well cooked. It did what it says and gives you “a warm hug”. Sadly, whilst the young staff are bright and friendly, the service is disjointed with no personal touch or responsibility for the table, leaving you feeling a little out of touch/on the sidelines. A little reorganisation of FOH could see this place really fly high - would love to come back to experience this.

Feel sad to say this but went once more and had a really bad Sunday lunch. I don't know if the chef was on holiday or what but the veggies were mushy, the roast potato was clearly pre-cooked and reheated, it was wrinkly and old, and the usual standard just wasn't there. I didn't want to complain at the time as we were celebrating a birthday but it was telling that not one person commented on how nice their food was, I got the idea no-one wanted to spoil a celebration but we were all let down. The staff as always were lovely, friendly, the food came out quickly. But please have someone check what's going on with the kitchen?

Our second visit to Beetham in 1 month, testimony to how excellent our meal was. Fantastic menu, reasonable price and they very willingly did a small fish and chips for my 94 year old mother. The Frickles nibble with our pre dinner drink was original...

I love this pub and we usually pop in when we’re passing. Great traditional pub food with everything freshly made. Usually a good selection of cask ales. This old coaching inn is a pleasure to visit.

Called on way to lakes after a disappointing visit earlier in the year. Credit to the owner and staff for addressing the concerns and improving the outside service to previous levels. Great chips and a nice idea with the basket delivery. See you again.

Sunday lunch. Food was overall tasty but not what I would expect from such a highly rated establishment. Portions were small. Roast Beef dinner consisted of 2 thin slices of beef, 1 small potato cut in half to give you 2 roast potatoes, some mashed...

Sunday lunch - have had many delicious meals here. Usually would give a perfect five stars, but have deducted one because the vegetables have gone down a notch -- there's fewer of them and they seem to have less variety. I used to love the...

An excellent traditional pub, large and airy. Excellent food, a Sunday roast and, on a subsequent visit, fish. Quantities just right, the bottomless gravy jug a nice touch. Drinks include some less well known and excellently kept European lagers and a good wine list. Staff...

Twice in a week. Another wonderful meal. Sunday lunch followed by a wonderful steak on Friday night. The pub has been in existence since 1609 which tells you something. The menu had a steak special on..sadly no mushrooms. I Asked if there was any chance...

Had fish and chips in the beer garden. Was so disappointed. They were so overcooked. Dark, dark brown. Certainly won't be going again.

Cold and smelled of dogs on arrival. Waited ages to be served and the waitress was more interested on who was at the bar rather than taking our table order for 10 people. Food was very salty and the steak pie in particular was terrible. Every meal as standard/basic or frozen style food. The whole place is run down and miserable. We went off trip advisor reviews as well on a visit to the area and wished we hadn’t. Go to The Pheasant Inn down the road at Allithwaite instead that was lovely food and fab service.

Well I won't be going back ,the food was awful ...the tomato ,basil and pesto soup had a horrible sharp but sugary sweet taste...the sandwich that came with it had the cheapest bright yellow " butter "on. ,a maximum of one slice of ham and the cheapest mustard . My 4 year old grandson could have made a better sandwich ! My husband had pie which had hardly any meat in it and the gravy was unusual tasting ( to say the least ) and sweet . I've had far superior microwave meals ! The toilets which were always an asset to the pub had gone downhill too.

My husband and I were staying at the nearby county hotel and decided to call in for a coffee on the way into the shopping area. The coffee was great and the millionaires slice was lovely. Service was very good.
