Finkles restaurant in South Lakeland

This is always a good place to eat with genuinely home made food and a good variety. Also a good range of drinks and willing to vary the menu if necessary. Nice building too and helpful staff.

Whilst walking around Kendal’s old streets came across this cafe set back. Walked in and it’s deceiving from the front as the cafe opens up in to a big dining area with seating upstairs and down. This is a family run business and very popular. We decided to have food and the service was super quick and the staff very friendly. The food was excellent and very reasonable cost wise. Parking in the nearby multi-storey. Next time we are in Kendal we will be returning.

fantastic place. On our regular visits to the Lakes in January and September we visit Kendal and this is the go to place for lunch. Kendal has very little to offer a visitor now and if Finkles was to go we would not bother. The local council have killed the town completely. The food here is great British fair always well cooked and large portions. Perfect for lunch. If you are in Kendal it is a must.

Just came upon Finkles as we were walking up the street. What a find! Ordered hot drinks and then saw they sold apple & plum crumble. Served with ice cream or custard it was outstanding (home grown apples we were told). Very friendly staff as well.

Lovely lunch, sat at pavement table in pedestrianised street in the sun. Two of us had the vegetable flan which was well-filled and came with a lovely fresh salad; one of us had the savoury pancake which was also great: There was a good choice on the menu. Excellent friendly service without being intrusive. We had a leisurely lunch and did not feel rushed. Would definitely return when next in Kendal.

Have been going there 40 plus years and never disappoints

I love this little place, we have come here for the last 3 years whilst visiting the lakes. The food is good quality at a good price especially for the lakes. Staff are always friendly and the nest part are the xmas cups and old soup bowls that remind me of going to my aunties for dinner.

Stopped for a quick bite to eat on a rather damp Wednesday lunchtime. Things soon brightened with very friendly service and excellent food. Omelette was best I'd ever had! Look forward to returning on my next trip to the Lake District.

What a lovely, cosy, unique place this is! We stopped by, because it was indicated as a "family place", and a family indeed we found. Very friendly people, exquisite home cooked food, great atmosphere. I would definitely recommend Finkles if you are in Kendal.

We had lunch here today and it was delicious. I had cheese and ham toastie served with salad and my husband had the Ploughman’s Lunch. It was very reasonably priced and the staff were lovely and friendly.

Very, very slow service. Girl serving was on her own with the chef. She was clearly new by the amount of times she delivered the wrong food to the wrong tables. Took 20 mins to get a drink delivered to the table. Food ok, home cooked. Won’t go back due to attitude of both staff and the very slow pace, with no acknowledgment. Front of house needs some serious training in etiquette, and a personality.

My husband & I first started frequently visiting this wonderful restaurant over 10 years ago before moving to Australia. Now we are back visiting & Finkels was first on our list for a yummy lunch & they definitely didn't let us down. Food, atmosphere, friendly all 10/10

This place is just amazing if you like the cosy a bit old fashioned(ish) one. Staff are friendly and kind. We asked we could have the tunna sandwich as a toasted one and they said no problem. We had 2 soup&sandwich deal, 2 mugs tea and one sweet potato fries and we paid £24. I think it is a good price, and we left the place with feeling we are full. Now the soup was chicken leek and corn, was nice (but i liked better the other, we ate there months ago, that was chunky vegetable.) I think you can see on the photos how nice is the presentation of our food. And those not just looked nice, they were very tasty too. Sandwiches were rich as the soup too. Sweet potato fries crunchy outside but soft inside. Very nice no oily at all. Toilette are correct and clean. Gentleman downstairs, ladies upstairs (but i don't think so there is another downstairs for disabled people). Enough table inside and as i saw well they can serve bigger group upstairs. Menu: large selection and varied. Traditional hot food, from soup through burgers, pastas, fish&chips, scampi... etc. And a lot of desserts. They accept card and cash too. Tip jar is at the till. You pay at the till desk when you leave. I suggest if you are in Kendal and would like a lunch/brunch then pop in this place.

Went today for dinner. Really friendly and have a gluten free menu. Enjoyed the meal and not over priced. Will call again. Really nice place to stop and chill while in Kendal.

This was our first time in Kendal. We had an appetite for fish and chips but were unable to find anywhere open after walking to nearby fish shops. So we tried Finkles. I can usually judge a place on how many people are in the restaurant. We were seated straight away even though it was nearly full. Not disappointed at all! Fish was fresh and well cooked. Chips were lovely. The waitress was very friendly and service was quick. Value for money as well. If we ever come back to the Lakes we will definitely return and recommend to our friends! P.S. Finkles, if you read this, what oil do you use as it made the chips have a really nice flavour? ☺

Husband and I ate here today by default as the place we were going to go to had no tables. We were so pleased that we did. Both had the homemade steak pie and I had sticky toffee pudding with fabulous carmel sauce and cream - all delicious! Excellent value for money - lunch as described with coffee and a pint of Stella lager for £30. Staff very pleasant and helpful. Not a fine dining experience but it doesn’t pretend to be - it is what it is and all the better for that. We would definitely eat here again and happy to recommend.

Had a fantastic breakfast there this morning. Really dog friendly. Will definitely be back when in Kendal again. Lovely owner and a great waitress, very attentive!

Shocked to read Joyce’s review !!! I have regularly been to Finkles and every time I’ve had the risotto ,I’ve never tasted one any better than theirs,simply love it disappointed if it’s not available would recommend it to my friends

Visited Finkles today for lunch, what a total disappointment and waste of money.!!! Ordered the Tuna risotto which was awful, this dish should have been called packet rice covered in cheese!!! Never in my life have I had risotto laden with cheese on the top. When the waitress brought the risotto to the table it looked like lasagne, I said no I ordered risotto. The waitress took it back and said to the woman in the kitchen this is not what was ordered, the woman in the kitchen said what does it say on the order, the waitress said it says risotto, the woman in the kitchen said well that is what it is. The waitress brought it back to the table and said it is risotto. On tasting the so called risotto I thought I should have stayed at home made myself a packet of rice, stuck a bit of tuna in it and stuck a mound of cheese on top then bunged it in the microwave as this is all the so called cook in Finkles had done. Also ordered soup and a sandwich which was equally as bad as the risotto. Granddaughter ordered soup and bread, the waitress said I will bring your butter, told her butter was not required as granddaughter cannot eat it as she is dairy free, waitress brought the butter anyway!!! Staff need to listen to what customers are telling them. Paid £25.65 for microwaved food, total joke and total waste of money. Backstreet greasy spoon, avoid at all costs, won’t be returning.

We stayed a week at the Holiday apartment attached to Finkles restaurant. It was a gem of a place tucked away in the heart of Kendal. A beautiful, newly refurbished apartment. Well equipped and spacious. We were made to feel very welcome.

Both had home made cheeseburgers which were very good. The ginger cake and rum butter was really light and flavoursome. Great value for money too.

Went for lunch today with a friend, had Gammon and it was beautiful, came with chips and egg, onion rings cooked in batter that melted in the mouth, it was delicious and a big plate full great value for money

After walking around Kendal looking for a good value place to eat at realistic prices, we accidentally came across a small alleyway which had nice seating area onto the main street. We decided to look at the menu ( we had noticed that some other cafes/restaurants lacked menus on display outside their establishment). As we looked, a couple walked out of the alleyway stating how nice the food was. There was lots of traditional meals on the menu which was exactly what we were looking for. So we entered the cafe, ordered, food was fresh and didnt wait long at all. All the staff were friendly and were happy to chat. Other establishments I visited generally the staff seemed stressed /too busy.. The food/staff/ambience is wonderful, so without a doubt I would visit again

“ Finkles “ is tucked away off Finkle Street but it is worth searching for . On this occasion we only wanted morning coffee as we had eaten breakfast at our hotel . People around us were eating a variety of meals and snacks - all freshly prepared and all looked very good . This place has bags of character , is family run and the staff are friendly and helpful . We use Finkles around once a week. It's consistently excellent, food always tasty and reasonably priced and the staff extremely efficient and friendly. Today we had the Christmas lunch which was absolutely first class! For me, creamed mushrooms with bacon, turkey with all the trimmings followed by the loveliest Pavlova served with cream, banana and toffee sauce - absolutely delicious. Finally.....my friend and I have been coming here on and off since our school days which were a long time ago unfortunately.......still coming, says it all really. Thanks Finkles x

En una mañana muy fría de noviembre, mientras buscábamos en Kendal una cafetería para desayunar que acepta 2 perros pequeños limpios y bien educados, nos encontramos en la cafetería Finkles. El propietario y un joven camarero fueron extremadamente amables, estábamos bien para sentarnos en el porche cubierto anexo (cálido interior) mi compañero tenía un inglés completo y tuve un tocino y bap de huevo, ambos eran sabrosos y dieron en el clavo. Definitivamente regresaremos para probar algunos de los alimentos caseros que se ofrecen para el almuerzo. No es una basura costosa, ya que asociaríamos algunos de los cafés de la zona, es auténtica comida casera a un precio excelente. ¡Gracias!

Lovelyi little hidden gem where you get a friendly atmosphere and home cooked food

Don't come to Finkles for fancy decor, ambient music or swanky weird dinners. Come to Finkles because you want substantial, delicious, hearty food for a decent price (especially in the Lakes). We had the shearman's pie and the crepe Bolognese, which was a cheesy delight. Coming back here!

Tengo muchos buenos recuerdos de este lugar cuando mi esposo y yo, que tristemente fallecimos hace dos años, los visitamos. No me decepcionó en absoluto. Al igual que hace todos esos años, de lo que no hay nada de qué avergonzarse, un fabuloso ambiente antiguo con un personal amable que hace un esfuerzo por hacer ese pequeño extra. Me encantó con mi hija y mi nieto, buena comida a un precio decente. Por mucho tiempo puede continuar. En el centro de la ciudad para que sea fácil de llegar.

¡Encontré este lugar cuando nuestro auto se descompuso en la M 6! Familia de cuatro personas todos tuvimos una comida. Lugar tranquilo, el pedido se tomó con prontitud, la comida llegó rápidamente, ¡la comida estaba caliente y deliciosa! Justo lo que recetó el doctor. Incluso exprimido en una bandeja de chocolate hornear también. Muy recomendable si buscas buena comida. También parecía ser un perro amable.

A cosy place which is easy to miss. Dogs welcome in the first part of the building. My husband had a delicious omelette with well cooked chips and I couldnt resist a mushroom crepe. Lovely lunch.

Me and my friends stopped here for a wee refreshment... a couple of us ordered cakes and a drink and another couple of us just ordered alcoholic drinks. The lady came back and explained that in order to drink alcohol, we had to order something to eat... so bless her she told us to order what was the cheapest thing on the menu so they weren’t rinsing us but still adhering to their licence. To be honest... the woman serving us was so nice... that she absolutely made the place. I wish I would have got her name... but to the lady with dark hair, glasses and great giggle... thanks for a great experience! Plus the place was quaint in a great area and to be honest my friend had such a great experience with her ice cream soda she ordered another haha... enjoy folks!

Good home cooked really lovely helpful staff, well worth a visit

Love this place it is a must every time we visit Kendal. I have had a few items off the menu over the years but honestly the omelettes are to die for, I find myself craving them even when I am at home. The staff are lovely the place is spotless and the food potions are great. Oh and make sure you have the omelettes Cheese and Ham.

Called in for a lite lunch. We chose the soup and bread roll. The soup was very tasty and enjoyable.
