Everything seemed shut on a Tuesday in the vicinity & we returned to The Wheatsheaf after not visiting for several years. Pub was nicely done inside balancing traditional atmosphere in the bar & a gastro pub vibe in the main dining area. Staff were super friendly especially the younger lady who was incredibly helpful. Sadly the food didn’t match her standards. Whitebait was good but the tomato soup was way too artificially sweet. And the ‘bitty’ chips tasted like they were fried in the same oil as fish. A chippy no no. Bread seemed microwaved (dense) & my individual pie looked shop bought, mushy peas tasted like Bachelors & the gravy was def Les Granules du Bisto. Not good.

We have come here numerous times over the last 7/8 years, always our go to place for special occasions and family meals out, however after today’s experience we will never be returning again. We ordered soup to start which initially came out cold we told the lady who apologised and took it away and said they would bring a fresh one. To our astonishment, the torrent of abuse that then came from the kitchen was horrendous especially when we had our small child with us. We could clearly hear the chef screaming at the waiter stating ‘which f### table are they sat at how dare they disrespect my food I will f### go tell them’. We were in complete shock. The man then came over and said what’s the issue we explained how that was unprofessional and how can they let the whole pub hear that, all over a cold bowl of soup. He didn’t even properly apologise and just said sorry he’s diabetic and having a bad day! Which unfortunately is just a really bad excuse to make. I wanted to leave there and then but we stuck it out after travelling just for this meal. The mains came out and were mediocre at best, the pie had maximum 3 chunks of beef and just generally no comparison to how the food has always been here, especially considering the cost of the food. After all the years of going to this pub and always thoroughly enjoying every meal we’ve ever had I am devastated that we will no longer be returning. No customer should be made to feel so uncomfortable as a paying customer.

We booked in January , an overnight stay. When we arrived on Aug 10th, the booking had not been passed on by whichever company now runs the hotel part of the business. No room at the Inn indeed! They eventually found us a room elsewhere at The Queen’s Head at Troutbeck. Despite numerous emails, we’ve not had as much as a courtesy reply from Robinsons, let alone any sort of apology. When you arrive at 7 pm it’s very unsettling to say the least!

We all know when something is wrong. Well today at the Wheatsheaf in Brigsteer was one of those days. If I list all the things that were wrong we’d be here a while so I’ll concentrate on the food. I ordered the roast beef sandwich on a sourdough roll, price £12. It came on two slices of a shop bought loaf, and one could see the imprint of the chief’s fingers. I was offer a 10% discount. The waitress said she’d get the chief to come and have a word. I waited a while but then thought it was best not to discuss the issue in front of other diners so went to the bar area where I found the manager working. His attitude was in the mode of I couldn’t care less, and I had to bite my tongue a lot during our short conversation, even though he did offer a replacement. My other choice would have been the fish finger sandwich but that also came on a sourdough roll which they didn’t have. ( the menus are printed each day!) So I declined the offer of a replacement and shared the sandwich my wife ordered. It was not very good but anything for a quiet life. It has gone a long way down hill since masterchief winners could be seen here and I have frequented the Wheatsheaf for many years. In future I’ll look at recent tripadvisor reviews before going again, and ignore those posted by bots.

Awful!!!! Went to go as family of 10, table in wrong place where we told it would be but no apology or effort to correct things. Just very rude staff! I feel for hospitality venues in this day and age, but this place is bringing it on, and it shows as no other tables being used hardly!!!..think you can thank your staff for that one.

Came in on Sunday for a drink and to watch the football! The staff were amazing the food was great however unfortunately at the start of the evening there was a very rude gentleman kicking up a fuss about wanting to sit and eat in front of the bar. there was very clearly no tables for 10 people to sit where he demanded to, the staff tried accommodating the group and did a fantastic job handling the whole situation! They are an asset to the business especially the older lady with glasses who stayed so calm with the gentleman I commend her!

We visited The Wheatsheaf twice in 2 days. On arrival in Kendal on a Saturday evening, we went to this pub for a quick meal and to check it out for a possible Sunday roast. We had a very warm welcome and ordered our drink and food. No complaints at all. Both meals were very nice and the service was good. So we booked for the following day. This wasn't such a good experience. My roast lamb was very nice, and the cheesy broccoli was really lovely. However, my wife's roast beef was very rare. A number of people, myself included, would quite enjoy the meat like that, although it looked even a bit too bloody for me. Our complaint is that you would think they'd check with you how you like your meat, especially if it comes that rare. We did raise it with the waitress, and she happily took it back for it to be cooked more. It was much better when it came back but was absolutely swimming in gravy. Maybe, in the chef's mind, it now needed gravy as it would be tough! But it's down to taste, and my wife likes her beef well done. The initial experience of very bloody meat had put her off, and so she didn't enjoy her meal. So, as I said in the title, a mixed experience.

This is a difficult meal to review. The ambience was really lovely and authentic if you are looking for a traditional pub atmosphere. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The food was tasty but a bit confusing. I ordered a caprese salad as an entree which was described as a “decadent Italian appetiser of creamy buffalo mozzarella, sweet red & yellow vine cherry tomatoes, etc”. It arrived with not one tomato. No problem, I alerted the manager who passed it on to the chef, out came a plate with two cherry tomatoes cut into two. The odd thing was that the salad itself was delicious - even though it had chickpeas in it which I’ve never before had in a caprese salad. My husband’s entree of smoked haddock fish cake seemed very processed and a bit average. Maybe these were all just teething problems and things will improve - their coffee was delicious.

Getting fidgety by then unsure what was going on! Eventually a lady appeared and told us she had forgotten to put our order in. She apologised and offered us a round of drinks. Food came not impressed!! Sunday roast well the beef was beautiful and that’s it. Vegetables so disappointing half a carrot small bit of broccoli some mushy creamy cheese veg Yorkshire pudding soggy oh dear!! My son had a chicken pie he left it. We have had so many lovely meals there spoilt my day. Have messaged the Wheatsheaf no reply.

We stopped overnight on the way between England and Scotland. Its in a beautiful village and has great ales in a cosy attractive bar. However, the food was very average - although billed as roast chicken it was grilled chicken breasts and underdone roast potatoes, my husband had the cumberland sausage which he described as ok. We paid a bit extra for the king room but it was tiny, with no cosy features, marked decoration and the shower room had no shelves to put your things on. It was simply unloved, almost like a holding cell. After 300 miles of driving we could have done with soft lighting and cosy decoration. Milk is usually kept in a fridge at the end of the corridor but we had to ask twice to get any. At no time did any of the staff start a chat with us, they simply supplied what we asked for. When we checked out, the lady asked if everything was ok for us with her back to us. The breakfast was plenty and grilled perfectly and I suppose it was good value for money but we will choose somewhere else next time

Not the best Saturday night dinning experience . There appeared to only be two staff serving food and drinks, I felt sorry for them as they were overwhelmed. Most of food was ok, fish was very small for the price, triple cooked chips were all the scraps from the bottom of the fryer, half of which were impossible to eat. When I mentioned this to the waitress , she agreed they weren’t good, but we still got charged. Ordered a flat white coffee, when it came it was black coffee with milk, nothing like a flat white.

Booked for a family celebration the on line menu was very appealing. On arrival we were seated and presented with what we would call a very limited menu. We we informed there was only one roast available enough for one serving ,we were informed it had been a busy lunch service. Just before our payment we heard the waitress offering another option of food which was not on the limited menu to other customers. Food came promptly but we had to ask the waitress twice for the bill and had a long wait before we could settle the bill. In future it would be helpful to advertise the online menu with the limited which is available. Our party of 4 were disappointed with such a basic menu on a Sunday dinner service options were burger, sausage&mash, fish &chips , cheese &onion pie and one vegetarian option. There was nothing special but very basic on the menu and no specials. On the whole it was very disappointing and online menu misleading.

Reserved a table and got placed in bar area - asked to be moved to the smarter area - this was accepted but with a sour face. Ordered the cheese & onion and steak pie - unfortunately both plates came smothered in gravy (beef?) - fine for the steak pie but decidedly odd for the cheese pie. When the issue was raised with staff we were informed that the gravy could be scraped the plate if we wished - my wife declined this generous offer and reluctantly proceeded to eat the perfectly good cheese pie but unable to taste it above the taste gravy. Was also told be a second member of staff that the gravy for the cheese pie was stated on the menu - on double checking this it was NOT the case. Will not return ourselves but would advise if they continue to insist on serving gravy with cheese pie the gravy comes in a separate bowl

We enjoyed our meals, although not all the menu was available on a midweek lunchtime. Service was a little slow, not an issue as it left more time for chatting. The 'sausage and mash' did not need truffle in the mash - advised when it was ordered- as the gravy was wonderfully rich and tasty. The Burger was HUGE!, and advised to be yummy. Service was a little slow, not an issue as it left more time for chatting. We were pleased we came in daylight as the 'road' from the main route needed careful navigation of the potholes.

The facilities were good and fresh milk was even brought up so we could make teas and coffees. The bathroom was very spacious and clean with a fairly large shower. The bed was also very comfortable and a good size. The breakfast was also very tasty and there was a good choice of food to choose from. We both had a full English and they were very tasty. The meat was good quality and the poached eggs were made perfectly. There was also free on site parking just to the side of the building. Upon arrival we discovered that we had been booked in for the wrong day, which was extremely disappointing. There were no apologies for the mix up, no attempt to accommodate us and the staff looked as if they couldn’t care less. The pub has been totally refurbished during lockdown, which lead to a really fresh feel to the place. The tables are suitably socially distanced, and super clean, with a "cleaned and ready" tent card on each. However, there were enough people to ensure that there was a buzz and lively feel about. The food was as good as it ever was! Fish pie, big chunks of fish, pie of the day, with chicken breast (not nasty bits!) and brisket of beef, super tender, super tasty. The team were ever present, nothing too much trouble, even though they were having to "wait on" for all drinks as well as food. This is an excellent pub restaurant, only around 20 mins from the busy central Lakes, but delivering excellent service with great value for money - I would definitely recommend!

Mains we chose, were chicken pie ( not a pie but a stew with a lid) and 2 steaks. Both very well presented and cooked as requested. Dessert were just as tasty - staff friendly and attentive- definitely try this place out- we had a really good dining experience

I visited here three times with my partner during a week-long stay, and the place was excellent each time. Food is high-quality, locally themed and very heartening after a day of walking. Service is excellent; the staff are attentive but not overbearing - and during the current restrictions are evidently doing an excellent job; sanitizer is available, all staff are masked, and distancing/direction is enforced. And despite that - the place has a wonderful, warm and comfortable atmosphere. A really lovely surprise of a place. Recommended to all!

Lovely place to stop for food/drink. Welcoming staff, good efficient service and the food is exceptional. Visit every year when on holiday in the area and never disappointed . Would certainly recommend, one of the best places to eat in the area without doubt.

This was our first visit after the Wheatsheaf reopened after Lockdown. We received a warm welcome and were made to feel special. Service was up the usual high standards. Whilst the menu is smaller than before, there was still a good choice. We all chose different items and they were all delicious. Not the same as before Lockdown ( how could it be? ) but still very recommendable. It appears that all appropriate anti-COVID measures for guests have been taken.

We had our best meal here during our stay in the Lakes. Despite it being a reduced menu there was still a reasonably varied selection. I chose the Beef Brisket followed by the Eton Mess for dessert; both were very tasty! Service was very good and there was a pleasant, cosy atmosphere inside. I would definitely recommend and we’d certainly revisit if holidaying in the area again.

Went for a friends birthday last month. There was only one veggie option on the main menu (a veg curry), I asked if it was vegan and an embarrassed waiter returned from the kitchen and said no. I asked if there was anything on the menu diary free and he again looked embarrassed and said no, while flipping through the menu.... Thankfully my friend suggested a pizza with no cheese, so I had that. It was really tasty! But couldn't help but feel disappointed.

What a great place this is. The staff are so friendly and helpful. If that isn't enough the food is awesome. I had the brisket and was surprised by how amazing it was. I tried two real ales: Crag and Pheasant Plucker. Brilliant!

Wonderful food and friendly staff. I feel it is reasonably priced for the product you get in this lovely modern country pub. Very dog friendly, but extremely clean, but avoid if you're not keen on dogs.

First and foremost the staff and the food were both to the highest standard. The pub has great decor and a lovely atmosphere. Therefore I would recommend. Now the big negative - a dog was allowed to sit on a dining chair in the main eating area. At times the dog had its paws on the table and was barking at passing dogs. Not one of the staff challenged this. This behaviour needs to be managed.

We have previously stayed at the Wheatsheaf so knew it was good. Stopped off for Sunday lunch as we were leaving the lakes. I had the crab burger which was amazing and the husbands roast beef lunch looked very good (he ate it all so that tells me everything - he is very fussy).

Cold and smelled of dogs on arrival. Waited ages to be served and the waitress was more interested on who was at the bar rather than taking our table order for 10 people. Food was very salty and the steak pie in particular was terrible. Every meal as standard/basic or frozen style food. The whole place is run down and miserable. We went off trip advisor reviews as well on a visit to the area and wished we hadn’t. Go to The Pheasant Inn down the road at Allithwaite instead that was lovely food and fab service.

As soon as we walked through the door the staff were welcoming and very attentive. The food was lovely and good value for money. We sat outside which is a great little sun trap for those rare sunny days in the Lake District. We would high recommend and we will definitely be back .

An impromptu choice to visit Plato's today and what a brilliant decision and choice. We had a really superb meal and were made to feel very welcome by Ronnie, who looked after us! We had the fish finger sourdough sandwich and the chicken and paprika mayo sandwich...accompanied by parmesan and truffle chips 🍟 😋 absolutely delicious. All washed down with a delightful glass of rose wine. We will definitely be returning. It was such a great culinary treat.
