Wow! The most unwelcoming, unfriendly pub on the planet! Walked on Christmas Day, called in and asked for a quick drink to revive us from a long walk in the rain ….. and told ……NO! They refused to let us buy a drink. In a pub. On Christmas Day! All the staff wore an expression like a slapped backside. Absolutely vile. The whole place looked like your grandmas front room and smelt of cabbage - so probably just as well.

We came across the Wheatsheaf after a quick Google Maps search for a place to eat and we felt very pleased with ourselves with such a lucky find. The pub itself is wonderfully olde worlde with an open fire and dark wooden beams. For lunch, there was a great selection of larger meals (around the £14 - £17 mark) but we opted for 'light lunches' (around the £7.50 - £9 mark) which were extremely filling, delicious and the chips were exceptional - I rarely say that about chips!

We visited here for the first time last Sunday, as a family group of 8 ranging from 7 to 70 (with a reservation), and everyone came away very happy. From the picture-postcard cuteness of the village I'd expected the pubs to be a bit upmarket and chi-chi, but the Wheatsheaf felt like a classic country pub, very warm and welcoming with lots of quirky traditional charm - no glossy blonde wood in sight. We were seated at a comfy table in a cosy side room, and served with super friendliness and amazing speed. Drinks were great - some excellent beer - and the food menu proved perfect, a great set of pub classics with a few interesting new angles and an impressive veggie selection. It being Sunday most of us went for the roast, which was brilliant, a generous few slabs of perfectly-cooked (to my taste anyway) beef, some gorgeously crispy roast potatoes, and an excellent yorkshire pudding, all swaddled in plenty of good gravy, plus a couple of side dishes with the veg, including a really delicious (and apparently famous) cauliflower cheese. One of our party went for the fish pie, which also looked good and was apparently very tasty. The staff were never intrusive but always seemed to be around when top-ups were needed, and were super-flexible catering for the picky little ones. A delightful pub which I fully intend to visit as often as I can.

As a family who have a connection with the area and East Hendred in particular we are compelled to visit every now and then to soak up the picture postcard views and to bring back memories or visit our long lost ancestors in the graveyard. These visits are normally planned well in advance but today was an almost on the spot decision to put on loan to the local museum a memorial plaque for one of the WW1 soldiers listed on the memorial outside it. My aunt suddenly asked me if I would drive her down to drop it in before Remembrance Sunday, so we planned a spot of lunch and found the Plough closed but were recommended to the Wheatsheaf as being good value for money. After our business at the museum we walked the 10 yards to the pub and had what I would call my perfect experience of a quick lunch. The pub itself is beautiful, clean and friendly and has a lovely old world charm with open fire. The beer was spot on and well kept. We looked at the menu and 3 of us immediately opted for the liver and bacon (lambs liver). It was exceptional with generous portions and the mash was the best I have ever experienced outside the home. My wife's steak pie was equally impressive and we all remarked on the quality of the meals. Excellent service, great value, perfect surroundings all went to make the trip down well worthwhile, as I said this is exactly what you expect when you pay the sort of prices charged today for food but rarely do you get what you pay for, this was one of those times!

My friend and I visited the inn on a quiet Tuesday night. This made no difference to the welcome or the food. A wonderful hostess greeted us and served a fabulously kept pint of beer. Delicious Camembert and salad with complementary warm bread was swiftly followed by the most delicious home made goats cheese and apricot nut roast. The house salad was delicious and had little nuggets of fresh apple that were light and refreshing. Absolutely gorgeous. My friend had the chicken in a light cream sauce that she told me was the best she had tasted for many years. What a fab pub. What fab food and what a lovely landlady and waitress All supplemented by a sprinkling of sporting legend photos around the room. Magic. Will be back next time I go to Oxfordshire

Food Just had to write this review as this is the only place I have ever had liver as the main course and which was after much deliberation. My goodness! It was simply devine!!! I couldn't believe I was eating liver in a pub and it was so perfectly made, and was just the right texture; not light pasty melt in the mouth and no where near hard...it was just superb! Ambiance It's a pub so really nothing to add to that, though it does have its unique features as most Oxfordshire homes and old pubs do. Service Had the service not been good I'd never have tried the liver. Informative and helpful.

After our monthly Didcot & District U3A Walking Groups' first walk of 2018, we made an unscheduled stop for lunch at the Wheatsheaf Public House, East Hendred, which entailed 18 walkers requesting lunch! The landlord was pleased to us all but did say the numbers could delay service; this was totally unfounded, all 18 lunches were served at the same time, which was barely 20 minutes from order!! Therefore, we would highly recommend this typically English village public house set in the centre of the village, plenty of parking, albeit we were walking, excellent food and service, this Walking Group will certainly be going back!! Thank you to all at the Wheatsheaf ;-)

We where staying locally for 5 days and for at least three of the evenings we did a short walk to this place. This place is all you would expect of a little country pub, but with food that is amazing. My wife had a medium rare steak on a bed of potato and horseradish with a purée of carrots and port wine gravy. The last two times I had the lambs liver, which was so tender and with the bacon and gravy made a very enjoyable meal. Desserts are very traditional, of which I had the treacle sponge which was a nice warm finish to the meal. As usual I took pictures of all our different meals. Staff were very friendly and helpful every time we visited. If you are in the area it is well worth the visit. We tried other places in the village and always came back here, so next time I am in the area I will be back here, to see what is new or just to have the liver again.

We chose here as it was a mid way point for 4 friends to catch up on a Monday evening. We'd all had a look at the online menu so knew we would like something (fussy members within the group!) We were not disappointed. Plenty of parking and a friendly welcome, we arrived at various times within a half hour slot, but all had drinks and menus quickly served and details of the specials passed around. I was the only one to have a starter as a cheese freak, there was camembert on the specials, they were served with salad and bread and I was nearly full up just on this! The mains quickly followed - one had lasagne and three of us had ham (loads and thick cut), eggs (two fried and just runny enough to dip!) and chips (thick cut and crispy). We all struggled to eat it all but it was good! Two had deserts - one a hot fudge cake and the other the profiteroles (see pic) which I had to try and help out as there were so many! Very good value - with a soft drink we split the bill and paid £14 ish each. Good service and clean all round. We will be back - either together or with our separate friends & families :)

One of our locals that I always forget to review (until today). it is the traditional country pub in a lovely country village. the inside is everything you could want, beams, steps and a pub bar, but mainly a lovely restaurant. We went on a whim, it was a freezing cold day and my husband, who has been ill just wanted to get out of the house. We goit really warm welcome from the owners, were directed to a cosy table by a window and were shown a menu that was just right for a below zero day. I had smooth vegetable soup, clearly home made thick and tasty. My husband had deep fried camembert, so nice I almost wished I had chosen that. I followed the soup with fried sea bass and risotto. Having had a recent bad experience with risotto elsewhere I can report that I got a decent portion and it was wonderfully tasty and creamy. My husband had pie and chips, both very nice indeed. No room for puds, just coffee (in good sized cups) and the bill. The perfect lunch venue on a cold winter day.

We visited the Wheatsheaf last night - a Friday - and were shocked to find the place almost empty in the heart of the Christmas party season. The Wheatsheaf is a beautiful, cosy pub, nestled in the heart of the village, and with its log fire, and low-beamed ceilings is a great place to spend an evening. The food is typical British pub fare - scampi and chips, garlic prawns, sausage and mash - and for the most part is tasty and served with efficiency, albeit little charm. We were however frustrated by the chef/landlord turning on his iPad to watch the football rather loudly on the table behind us. The noise reverberated around the ancient walls and left us pondering why on earth anyone in the hospitality industry would disturb their customers like that! We'd love to return to this little English gem soon - but only if their staff up their game, just a few degrees.

The pub is warm and welcoming, we were attended to immediately though it was quite busy. The menu is varied, lots of choice, including vegetarian, and we enjoyed the food when it arrived steaming hot: scallops to start (delicious), perfectly cooked sea bass and a steak and ale pie. Generous portions meant we were too full to sample the wonderful-sounding desserts. Good wine list, not too expensive, medium range, well worth it.

We were not impressed the first time believing the food to be "Big is Beautiful" and overpriced. We were persuaded to go back for a second try but were equally disappointed. Four of us ordered fish and chips off the so-called specials board so were expecting freshly cooked flakey fish with fluffy batter. We could not have been more mistaken. Each one was identical in size and shape and looked exactly like the fish you buy from the freezer section of supermarkets. It was two thirds batter and one third rather grey fish. It was tasteless, and soggy with fat. And it was £12.50! With 2 other pubs in East Hendred we wonder why people choose to go here. We will not be returning.

The lady who served us (landlady?) was very pleasant and assured us all the dishes on the menu were home made. The meals were delicious but the portions were over generous. I know you don't have to eat everything on the plate and indeed we didn't. However the prices are not cheap and it seems such a waste to leave half. If you could only order small plates at a more reasonable price! If they don't like the idea of pensioners lunches they could offer small portions for smaller appetites! Smaller portions would mean room for dessert!

We have been to all three of the pubs in East Hendred and eaten meals at each of them. We went to The Weatsheaf in July for a midweek meal at about 7:00. We had heard that the food was as tasty as the Eyston Arms but much more traditionally pubby, cheaper and served with a decent real ale. The garden was very inviting and beautifully stocked with flowers and the inside of the pub is quite dark and old fashioned as one might expect. We ordered a pint and a red wine and looked at the menu. I should have chosen the Gammon as I've been told that it is very good but I spotted Fish and Chips on the special board and quite fancied that. My partner had a vegetarian option that may have involved goats cheese but cannot recollect what it was.Unfortunately the real ale that I had was cloudy and flat so I returned it and had a pint of the standard green king instead. When the food arrived I was really surprised to see that the fish was not fresh but frozen, it was in that peculiar straight sided coffin shape common to frozen prepacked fish. The chips were ok and the mushy peas were as hot as the centre of the sun after being microwaved. My partners food was similarly lacklustre. Now here's the thing, The food itself was adequate for a cheap meal and wouldn't be out of place in many cheap pub lunches, however the fish and chips cost £14:00 and the goat cheese thing cost nearly £10. My expectations, which may be unrealistic, are that a pub that charges that much money for food should not be delivering food that is clearly just pulled out of a deefreeze and dropped in a deep fat fryer, or microwave, with no attempt to disguise it's low standard. Also if a beer is cloudy when it's served don't offer another one from the same barrel.I'm really pleased that there have been some good reviews since our visit, we all want local businesses to survive and grow. I hope and expect that the microwave and freezer dinners are now a thing of the past.

Chef came out and verbally attacked me for questioning the liver in my main course. Astonishing! We will not be back. Ever. And we are local.

Myself and A Colleague stayed in the area for Business and was here for 3 Days. We stumbled across this Bar and Restaraunt after not having much luck finding anything open. The welcome and service we recieved from owner and staff was outstanding. We are not locals and was the first time we visited the establishment yet we were welcomed with open arms and were made to feel right at home.We were so impressed by the service we recieved we returned the second day to have an evening meal. I was very impressed by the quality of food and the speed in which we recieved it in.Overall we were very impressed and we will be returning tonight and would reccommend anyone staying in the area to eat and drink at this establishment.

The Wheatsheaf was not somewhere we went regularly (first time in about 12 months) but was somewhere we looked forward to eating if we decided to drive out that way, which is what we decided to do the other day. Driving over we reminisced about the seasonal menus and nice buzz the place always had, hoping that we'd get a table as we hadn't booked. The first thing we noticed when we arrived was the car park, which was empty, the second thing we noticed was the menu which was generic, then we noticed the lack of South African accents and how quiet the place was.We wished that we had not stayed the atmosphere didn't improve and the food was poor and over priced. I'm writing this after my return and after reading some recent reviews. Which if I'd have read would have made me choose somewhere else.

I visited the Wheatsheaf on Saturday evening with my parents, brother and sister-in-law and cousin. The staff were welcoming and friendly, and timed their visits to our table well. The food was great all round, and plenty of it, we all had a starter and main course and were totally full. The "ladies" was clean and well presented and the log fires added atmosphere to this charming pub. I would definitely recommend it to others.

I have read the poor and terrible reviews of The Wheatsheaf and feel they are unfair and unjustified.... ( but accept it is their honest opinion to a visit ).... The following is our experience.I have visited The Wheatsheaf three times over the first three months of the year and on each occasion we had an enjoyable evening. The food is excellent, a good choice of wines and variety of good tasty beers.I have always found the atmosphere to be convivial, no music( Thank the Lord ) just the hmmm of conversation of people enjoying the company of their friends. The staff were friendly and helpful.... On each visit the food was good value and excellently cooked.. (Stand in the doorway by the bar and watch the food being cooked ) ... The fish pie was stuffed full of prawns and lumps of fish ( not just salmon which I feel some chef's do to cheat ) .. The sausage and mash scrumptious... The lamb rump cooked to perfection ... The vegetables Al dante.. just as they should be, full of flavour. We shall visit The Wheatsheaf again in the summer to enjoy this terrific traditional English pub and delightful village together with the walks in the countryside around..... And oh yes the wonderful food and beer.

I used to go to the Wheatsheaf lots when the South Africain guys used to run it.... I will not return until it changes hands again. A friend and I order the SPECIAL "cod and chips" at £12.50 expensive I thought but fancied a nice fresh cod and chips.... However received frozen per-battered fish and frozen pre-cut chips it is sad when the best part of the meal is the mushy peas!!! Totally apaulled how can this be a special? I could make better at home!!! When I asked to talk to someone about it when they asked us how it was I was told the waitress was on her own and I could leave a number... I did and surprise they didn't call me.. £30.50 for two drinks and two fish and chips straight from the freezer a TOTAL RIP OFF. The waitress herself was great, was very understanding and was put in a poor situation by the management. I hope she works for new owners/managers soon as I liked this pub for food and went a lot... Luckily The Plough has got new management now and is much better so I will happily go there instead... I had a great lasagna there today! I will be writing a brief review there in a mo.. :-) I work locally and was very disapointed by the Wheatsheaf...as I say there has been a change in mgmt so old reviews are out of date.. Only trust new ones.

Our first visit to The Wheatsheaf following a change of ownership. Previously it had a reputation for good food and that certainly hasn't changed, we ate in the bar on a Saturday night and the menu provided was relatively brief (there may be a different one for the restaurant). I found plenty to choose from but my wife and our friends struggled a bit. Home made pate was delicious and more bread brought without having to ask! Main courses of Ham, Egg & chips, Sirloin steak, Salmon (slighty overcooked) and Duck (big portion but not over fond of the sauce) were all well received and again extra veg offered (but not needed). Desserts were fine but in our opinion a bit pricey for what they were. Overall the service is excellent and attentive, food good and the atmosphere friendly. If you are looking for value for money it's probably not fantastic but then compared to their close rivals it probably is!

East Hendred has too many good pubs for a village this size! We tried the Wheatsheaf as a change from the Eyston Arms. The first time we went just for a drink - they were about to close but were very accommodating for us and our dogs. We had lunch there in the garden and the food was fantastic - more stylish than the Eyston Arms and just as nice. The atmosphere inside is a bit stuffy compared to the Eyston Arms but the service and food are really good.

After reading reviews of The Wheatsheaf I was unsure of what to expect when myself and my family arrived but the service was warm and welcoming on the cold November evening!! The pub was bustling with all types of people eating and the fire was fantastic!! The waitress was lovely and very attentive with wide knowledge of wines and beers. The landlady was very sweet and made us feel right at home!! Once the food was served we were pleasantly surprised. I had the Mediterranean Prawns to start and the sauce was delicious, the rest of my family had a combination of soup, which was french onion and HUGE in portion size, and the pan fried sardines which were big enough to be the main!! Following this I had the duck in orange sauce which was also massive but so delicious i managed to finish it all!! Other than this we had the sausages and mash which was delightful but so so so big! My father struggled to eat all 5 sausages, and my mother had the supreme of salmon which was light and fluffy but came with so many vegetables she was unable to finish!! I am glad to see that from what I have read the Wheatsheaf has, in my opinion improved massively and well worth a visit!

The Wheatsheaf used to be my absolute favourite choice for pub lunches and evening meals when working late nearby. The owners were friendly and the food always good, even if the menu didn't really change that often. However new owners have now been in place since May so it's all change. On the plus side the garden is still the same, so you can still enjoy a meal outside in the sun if the weather holds. I was rather worried when we arrived at 1pm on a sunny Friday lunchtime to see only 2 other tables occupied in the whole place. While the bar girl was friendly enough the owner barely made eye contact which was disconcerting. I can't tell you how bummed out I was when the food started arriving. I kept it simple to play it safe and ordered a burger. It had a distrinct Birdseye quality to it and the bap wasn't much better. There was relish on the side, but nothing else with the burger (i.e. cheese, bacon etc.). The chips looked crispy but the taste didn't match the look. The other people at our tables opted for baguettes which were equally unispiring (I used to love the chicken and bacon baguette they used to do here). All of this wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the price. The old Wheatsheaf charged £9-£10 for a very good burger, fair enough. The new owners have kept the prices broadly the same, but the standard of the food is more Hungry Horse than gastropub. I would expect such a standard of cooking at a pub in the 1980s, but not in 2012. As an extra note they even charged for soda water, which is a first on me. They either have to drop their prices significantly or hire a decent chef. The Wheatsheaf used to be somewhere I took my parents for an evening meal, now I'd sooner take them to the carbon copy "Eating Inn" round the corner which although it serves chain gastropub fare, is reasonably priced and always of satisfactory standard for the money.

I used to visit this pub before the new owners took over, and it was very good. It may well still be very good - but what isn't good is the website - including the link on Trip Advisor - STILL takes you to the farewell message from the original owners. The changeover happened in May, so it really is time they sorted out a new site, so we can see the menus and see if it is worth a visit.

Still a place for an enjoyable summer drink in the garden (assuming there still is a summer in the rainy UK!) but the new owners have cut back on the food menu and what I tried was nothing special. Also friendliness had dropped down a notch. Hopefully the new owners are just finding their feet, but with 2 other pubs a few minutes walk away they will need to do better if they're to survive.

I went to the Wheatsheaf for the first time since I was a child this weekend, and had a lovely Sunday lunch. It was pouring with rain outside and the cosy pub and warm atmosphere was just what I was after. The menu was great, a good mix of classic favourites and some new additions that I was keen to try - I'd recommend the baked camembert with Cumberland dip to all visitors -Comfort food at it's best! Myself and some friends and family enjoyed a wonderful lunchtime bite here over the bank holiday weekend. Great variety of food, from tasty baguettes ( i recommend the beautiful local ham!) to freshly made main meals and salads. We had a warm welcome by the staff, and the 16th century inn provided a lovely setting to relax and dry off after enduring the rain! Very accommodating to families and a few different seating areas means you don't feel crowded. The service was great - timely and friendly. My only regret is that the weather wasn't nice enough to enjoy what looked to be a stunning garden area, will certainly be returning for a glass of wine in the sun very soon!

Well, the Landlord has only been in a few days but the beer was dead (see photo) and the food was poor. Not inedible, just no passion, no taste. We had the burger and the Oxfordshire sausages. Burger first ...Bun, frozen burger (from which fat poured and scolded my thumb). Chips (ok). Rocket "salad" with dressing. No relish (How do you run out of a relish you announce on the menu after a few days?). For 10 quid there is zero value. It was a meal I would have expected at a Weatherspoon's or such in a town. Sausages. Maybe ok. Mash was tasteless as was veg. Have they no imagination? Sour cream, mustard or cheese in mash? Do something with the veg other than boil it!If this is the 4th best place in Wantage then Wantage has issues. To the Landlord - the beer taps have diffusers on them for a reason. Do not remove them!

I've been here a few times over the years and I've always enjoyed it. The food is of a good standard and the wine list contains one of my favorite wines, which is a bonus! We recently had a Christmas meal here with a few friends and we were given the top part of the restaurant to ourselves which is nice as it gives a nice private dining experience. The staff are very helpful (compared to the stuffy and unhelpful Eyston Arms) and know their products well. The food itself is very good although if I had one complaint it would be there is not enough of it!

Had a Sunday lunch for 2, my wife had previously been and rated this village pub part of the Greene King group. In a way the pub is traditional with a bar, restaurant layout but with a COVID canopy with booth style tables. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The draught beer on offer was a Greene King summer brew and a guest ale from Hardy & Hansons, Old Trip. Very reasonably priced at £4.80. We both had a roast, I had beef and my wife pork. My beef was plentiful but a little chewy but wife’s pork was good. The roast potatoes were very good and the vegetables were plentiful if a little soggy. There was a good sweet selection I had the apple pie with custard which was alright. I don’t know why there haven’t been any recent reviews but based on this visit I won’t be rushing back, sorry.
