We ate lunch here on Friday 25th and were very disappointed, how the food has gone down hill in such a short time. Gammon under cooked, chips and fish were over cooked and dry. We definitely won't be returning unless you get a new chef in

Bradley was an absolute stand out! He made us feel incredibly welcome and offered to be of assistance in any way we needed. We had various questions about friends parking and coming and going and he was always very willing to help. The food was delicious and the service from the rest of the staff was faultless. Would highly recommend!

The Wharf Inn appears to have two sites so I am reviewing on both. I live locally and this was my fourth visit to the Wharf where in the past I found the food good and value for money but was therefore very disappointed to visit this week and be met with very poor service. We had booked a table for four and on arrival were handed four menus and told to sit where we wanted. The pub was very quiet, and I estimate less than 20 dinners for lunch. The tables were sticky but not so bad that they were not usable. After some 15 minutes we met our server who took our drinks order be she was new and had obviously had little training as she did not know what alcohol-free beers were available nor what angostura bitters were. She returned with the order some minutes later and had served a half pint instead of a pint, but we ignored that. Some time went by when a young male server came and took our food order. It arrived in good time and was reasonable except the veg with the pork belly was cold, but the gravy was very warm so countered this. The Halloumi burger in batter was a bit undercooked but the rest of the meals were acceptable. I also think that ketchup in a £1.49 Euro Foods labelled bottle does not say ‘Fine dining’. After about an hour and a half we had finished our meals but, in that time, no-one came to ask if our food was OK, if we wanted another drink, to clear the tables, show us the dessert menu so one of my guests went to the bar and ordered a coffee. A young man, who later identified himself as the manager, brought this and I asked if he could clear the table which he arranged. There were other tables in the room where I could see glasses which had not been cleared and by this time the pub was virtually empty. We had now been there for over two hours and when I went to the toilets I could see two young members of staff behind the bar, not serving, the manager was seated on a sofa by the door scrolling through his phone and opposite him on another sofa was a young female member of staff lying, feet up on the other sofa scrolling through her phone. As I passed through the bar there were tables with cutlery on and some with none. Empty glasses and unwiped tables so I decided to confront the manager. I told him that I found the service to be unprofessional as tables need cleared, glasses lifted, and chairs arranged. I knew they were not busy, but I suggested they at least act as if they were busy and said their attitude was in danger of ruining the pub reputation. I told him if I was the owner and had walked in on this he would have been sacked. This prompted as response and suddenly they swept into action but avoided coming near our table in the corner except to ask if we wanted the dessert menu but never lifted our used and now empty glasses.

Lovely spot next to the canal. Took us a while to find the way in. Just wanted a light meal which would have been slightly bigger if I had remembered to order the chips! Food was very good, although I couldn't order my first choice and the service was fine.

Nice environment but staff slow and some not really working it, vegan chickpea curry pretty horrid. Tasted like a tin of chickpeas in a nasty cheap tomato sauce and nothing like described on the menu. Nutritionally challenged, as in no fresh anything with it so guessing the kitchen have absolutely no idea about non-meat cooking. Shame as the pub is quite local but won’t be returning. Staff ok but as mentioned above don’t have much of a clue but then if the management don’t train or invest in them it’s hardly their fault.

Go there every year for Birthday. Won't be going next year. Table booked for 7 o clock, when we got there there was no table. They had to move other diners who were half way though their meals to accommodate us. Then a 90 min wait for an average meal. Other diners turned up, ate and left while I was waiting.

We had a fabulous meal. The service was good and all the staff were friendly and helpful. I love the ambiance and everywhere is lovely and clean. It is in a canal side setting and there is plenty of tables and dining options both inside and out. The garden is pretty with a view of the canal and awash with flowers. I fully recommend a visit. Not great customer service as there was no choice on the menu and they hadn’t run out as others had the chunky chips!

When canal boating on the South Oxford Canal we always stop off at the Wharf Inn for lunch or dinner, and made two stops on our most recent trip. Despite being fully booked for dinner on the Saturday night due to a party, when we called they told us to come by as early as possible and they'd do everything they could to accommodate us, and they were true to their word. We enjoyed an early dinner at 5.30 - opting for pub classics such as sausage and mash for my son, pie of the day for my partner (which he raved about) and Hamm, eggs and chips for me. The food was excellent. The Wharf Inn also has a fantastic outdoor seating area, overlooking the canal. Although we were unable to enjoy that with our dinner due to torrential rain, we returned for lunch later in the week and enjoyed fish and chips, burger (amazing!) and another pie of the day in the glorious sunshine. The staff at the Wharf Inn really make it a great place to visit - super friendly and helpful, and a special mention to Claudia, who was so accommodating. The pub also has a shop with essential supplies for canal boaters and a launderette. We'll definitely be going back on future trips - no doubt many times!

Service is simply spot on - genuinely warm and friendly staff. We wanted just a light lunch and was hoping to have a sandwich. There is no lunch menu so you're restricted to 'Small Plate' options unless you want a proper main meal. We ended up sharing nachos and garlic prawns. The food is lovely. A small lunch menu would be a brilliant addition tho.

We booked a table at The Wharf Inn for Friday evening looking forward to a meal there. We have been here on a number of occasions but since we were last at the pub it has undergone improvements inside and out so we were expecting a good experience. Unfortunately this was not the case.We ordered starters that took a little while to come but this was not a problem. However one of the starters, the squid rings, are not worth the money. For just under £6.00 there was a good lot of salad on the plate (which we didn’t really need) but only around 6 small squid rings. The people waiting on us were doing their best but the main problem for us was the fact that after being in the restaurant for just under two hours the main course still hadn’t arrived. This is despite being promised that we were to be the next to be served and others arriving later than us being served before us.For a place that is trying to encourage people to come there to eat it was very disappointing and in the end we were so fed up with the situation and we had no choice but to leave, and just paid for our staters and the drinks. We do like to see businesses thrive, but in this instance we felt it right to let others know about our experience at The Wharf Inn

We passed through Fenny Compton on the canal, and stopped at The Wharf Inn for an evening meal, for six of us plus a well behaved Cocker Spaniel. It was a delightful experience from start to finish. The food was outstanding. The home-made pie of the day (on the day it was chicken and ham) was probably the best pie I've had in any establishment anywhere for the past 20 years. Others around the table had a fair selection from the menu, including a vegetarian halloumi dish, a beautiful cauliflower, sweet-potato and spinach curry, and classic bangers and mash. This pub is applying the Government restrictions in an efficient and not overly officious way, making the visit as relaxing as one could get in the circumstances, even supplying a mask to one of our party who was inappropriately equiped. The meat pies are now individual (as oppose to the large tray ones they used to do) but are excellent with proper shortcrust pastry, not a stew in a bowl with a puff pastry top!

Very pleasant waiting staff who clearly enjoy working there. All the staff were well turned out and very helpful. The table was very well cleaned for our use. We both had fish and chips, great fish and really crispy batter. What I liked also was that the mushy peas, which can be run of the mill in some places, but were in fact yummy. Not amazing like it should off been for the price but service was awful. Never use to be this bad. In short I think I will give it a miss for a while until they sort themselves out even with the deals on at the moment. I also am disgusted at the prices of soft drinks £3 for a pint of lemonade! It use to be less than this with free refills and we had to ask twice as it was forgotten. Food was over priced for something that was average.

Been going to the wharf for years now and the food and service has always been great, mostly go once a month, back last year new owners took over what they have done is try and turn a great classic country pub into something it's never been!! Throughly dissappinted; Menu changed last year and all my favourites have been removed for me personally there is nothing good about this menu.. back in december I had the halloumi burger it came out with the bun burnt and it was totally different from how it used to be, we have visted today I had the beef burger I asked for the burger to be cooked a tad longer as I don't like a red burger but my steak I do.. i didn't expect it to come out the way it did very very well done the bacon snapped in half as that was well over cooked (I'm sure some people like it like that) it didn't even taste like a burger and guess what the bun was also burnt, it was the worst I've ever had, The prices have been increased by alot Also I've noticed that when we go now there is hardly anyone around before the new owners came it was always rammed had to wait for a table and sometimes food took about an hour to come so not sure what had happened here where is eveyone!!Bring back the old menu and get rid of the chef as they are not very good in my opinion..Don't think I will be visiting again such a shame as you've ruined a great pub!!!!

We had walked 2m along the tow path to Wormleighton reservoir and back, it was a little on the cold side and breezy to say the least. So a Saturday afternoon pub lunch was on the cards, the Wharf Inn was warm and welcoming and most importantly dog friendly. In fairness most of us just fancied something basic, like a hot or cold sandwich with maybe a coffee or a beer. Sadly the menu was a little more adventurous for our band of merry walkers, not to say the choice or quality lacked but just a little more extravagance that we needed after a walk. Those that chose a light bite offer of soup and a roll or hummus and pitta bread thoroughly enjoyed their meals, I can only recommend the beer.As a venue for lunch or diner would highly recommend the Wharf Inn, however for post walk stop over and refreshments, a little disappointing we couldn't get a sandwich, and if a Phillie cheese steak sandwich was to added to the menu, I'd make sure we all visited the pub again, and again.

5 of us went to eat there based on a reccomendation, we ordered lamb shank (which was passable) Hallumi burger (fine) two Ultimate burgers (burnt black burgers hidden amongst a tower of food - so it doesn’t matter the burgers were burnt right?) and macaroni cheese (disgusting, tasted like it came out of a tin). When we were asked about the macaroni as everything else was eaten, we informed staff that it wasn’t great and we got the reply of well that’s how it comes, people normally love it. No offer of anything to compensate or a guesture of goodwill in anyway. Whilst not expensive I would expect food to not be overcooked or to be lacking a cheese flavour in a macaroni CHEESE. At the very least, in a restaurant I would expect more compassion from staff when they are receiving a complaint and a procedure in place to change or offer a desert. Will not be visiting again.

I visit this establishment at least 4 times a week and usually I am on my own. I am always made to feel welcome by all the staff. Special mentions to Jake, John and Max. Always willing to go the extra mile for me no matter how busy they are.

I think the Wharf has being going through some updates to the building and garden areas recently. The towpath on the canal side is currently being renovated but isn’t affecting business, if you’re on a boat just moor up further down.

We were very trepidatious about visiting and eating here, given the most recent reviews - to the extent that we’d agreed to eat back in our holiday canal boat if we weren’t impressed. However - for us anyway - it was absolutely fine. Good food (including a good vegetarian selection), friendly waitresses and reasonable prices. Hopefully then ‘normal service’ (see older reviews) has been resumed.

I’m really disappointed to have to be writing this review. We eat here frequently but I fear today could be the last time.

I ordered 3 meals. One being Cottage pie and Veg. I asked if the the chips proper Homemade chips? The waitress said Yes! No they arrived Frozen steak chips. I hate frozen chips and would never have ordered if I been given the correct information! The Cottage pie seriously was Potato with a thin bit of Gravy at the bottom. I dug in and no meat or next to nothing was found! This is no exaggeration!! The Veg consisted of mush Peas, Cabbage & Swede I think? mixed together like Bubble n Squeak!

I recently took charge of a business in Southam, and this lunchtime I called in to The Wharf at Fenny Compton to enquire about a Christmas Lunch booking for our staff. I also planned to take the opportunity to grab some lunch and take a quick walk along the adjacent canal towpath.

Pleasant waterside eatery which caters for canal traffic. Drinks prices and meals reasonable for location. Barman John could lighten up a bit, seemed a tad dour. Was having a good laugh with a younger barman /waiter over a customer who ordered the baked Camembert without the French pronunciation, camem- burt. Remember these people keep you in a job. I had a pint of hand drawn blond bitter, didn't know the brew , he made no effort to draw a small sample which most pubs do. Even so I think if I was in that part of the country again I would call in.

Right by the side of the canal, the atmosphere at lunch time was charming and the food superb. It has a water supply there if you are on a boat and this alone makes it a good excuse to stop and sample the food and ales.

Visiting relatives who have a boat moored in the marina and we were taken to the Wharf for lunch. They have a lovely garden and patio area but as it was raining we had to eat inside. Basic pub inside if not a bit canteenish. Excellent pint of draught Adnams and the house wine acceptable. You have to order at the bar with your table number, the staff helpful and polite. We ordered 2 different pies which were excellent and a good sized portion. The macaroni cheese was enjoyed as was the fish and chips. We did not have to wait long for our meal despite the place being full. The food is typical pub food but comes well presented, hot and quite tasty. The pub is on the side of the canal and an ideal stopping place. The toilet facilities were clean and adequate. I can't comment on the prices as we were being treated but they seemed to be value for money prices looking at the menu.

Upon entry we were ‘greeted’ with a “what do you want guys?” To which I and my 3 other friends were very amused at. 3/4 of the orders to the table were messed up completely, all of them being burgers. My bacon was cremated and a horrible black colour and had no onions in when I ordered the burger to come as normal. My two other friends were also missing parts of their burger. Their service was slow and painful, with a drinks order being taken 15 minutes after we sat down. The landlord came over to finally take our food order after 30 mins of waiting. My friend went to order a curry but was told “we do not have it” by the impatient landlord. My friend was then given, and no joke, about 5 seconds to decide by the hurried landlord “hurry up lads we’re losing time here” so my friend picked the burger which was again messed up and ended up over cooked with a dry piece of bacon. Funnily enough, the table sat next to us who entered after our order was taken managed to get a curry. During the meal, we asked for some bbq sauce to which the landlord serving at the time said okay, and brought it over after a 5 minute wait. My other friend asked for another bbq sauce to which the landlord said “no I can’t, just can’t do it”, but a minute later came running back with another bbq sauce... who ‘runs out of bbq sauce’ but then comes back with more the next minute? I asked the landlord who was serving us why our order was wrong and he said it was because the chef can’t read checks, unfortunately the chef can’t cook either, can’t cook what appears to be some awful microwaved food, which we waited 40 minutes for it to come out, the landlord said he would “sort us out” when we went to pay, he walked away from the bar and left completely, leaving us with one of the waiters who didn’t serve us, who wasn’t aware of what happened.

Visited as a family. Nice pub on canal side which serves food and is dog friendly. Food is pretty bland and tasteless. Service was reasonable but card machine was 'intermittent' based on wireless signal strength. That slows things up and ties up a bartender.

We were travelling on a canal boat and moored up just below this pub on a rainy afternoon. We walked up a muddy towpath and found this place. Because the weather was a bit miserable we ordered home made pies for dinner to warm us up. I'm not a pie person but the barman said "Good Choice!" when we ordered and he wasn't kidding. The meals were really lovely. We had steak & ale pies and they came with loads of vegetables and mash. We paid £8.99 for each meal and went away very happy. Thanks very much

We arrived here weary after a day on the canal and were happy to sit down to quickly served drinks and a filling meal at a good price. The food was far from gourmet - I'd give it three stars except for the atmosphere and service being so pleasant.

We've eaten lunch twice recently at the Wharf Inn at the end of long canal walks, once in May, and again yesterday. Very friendly polite and helpful staff. Extensive menu, great food, large portions, excellent value for money. Lovely canal side pub with a big garden. Lovely interior with really good 70's music playing on both visits. We would definitely recommend this pub.

We had been on a narrow boat holiday and one of our crew had fallen in so we were so pleased to see the nice new signs saying laundry only to find a sign saying closed, after speaking to other local boaters it turns out its been closed for 3 months. Why advertise a service that's not provided. We did stay for a meal which was OK, would of been better if the staff spoke english

We were greeted by helpful friendly staff, and shown to our reserved seating. The venue has been refurbished since we last visited and has been done tastefully. The service was quick and the food was lovely (although it would have been nice to have a slightly bigger portion). Despite this it was good vfm.

Booked a table for 6 people at 7:15pm. Got there at 7:10 and after standing around for 10 minutes, we got sat down in the bar area. Waited another 10 minutes for put drinks orders to be taken. Given menus and waited another 30 minutes for food orders to be taken. Finally got taken to our table at 8:20pm over an hour after our booked time. Finally our food can e at 8:50pm… food was great albeit very small portions. Fish curry was good but the world’s smallest amount of rice. When the bill came the service charge was already on there. Our group personally do not like this as we prefer to give a tip for the service and the food NOT on the percentage of the overall food & drinks. Sorry to say that eating over 1 & 1/2 hours after table was booked is pretty poor. Whilst the place is lovey the service was slow. Either hire more staff including more chefs or take less bookings.

What an fabulous pub! This is what a true English pub looks like, feels like, smells like! Amazing...log fire, real beer, professional staff. The pub has so much history , from the date of the building to the contents around the pub. I enjoyed a fine cigar out front, below it's famous Mulberry tree, enjoyed a great pint of Guinness whilst listening to an Owl in a tree opposite the pub. A must place to visit...
