Popped in to eat after a long walk in the Berwyns, we certainly needed a good meal. Not may customers yet took a while to even be noticed and longer to get out order in. Passable food but not outstanding for the prices which seemed high for this part of the world. Drinks were so pricey we didn't bother which seemed to annoy the barman. Decor a bit tired and toilets discusting for a food premises. Thought they past us bill for another group but was ours yet charged for items not ordered. Left a sour taste rounding off a disappointing visit. Will come back to the area for walking but will eat elsewhere. Not a good experience.

Marvellous location but what a shame about the service. Food took an age and was mediocre. Attitude of the manager was strange, seeming indifferent to customers. Overpriced then "convenient confusion" about items not consumed but changed on the bill. Decor run down, this place needs a refurb to reverse clearly years of neglect. Plenty of better places to eat/stay in the area. Won't be returning or recommending.

Cosy meal in one of the pub rooms. Lovely welcome and friendly staff. Food was nice, but a little pricey for what it was - could have been a little bigger for the cost and it could have been a bit faster. Great choice of wine and a nice selection on the menu, about 4/5 choices for each course.

This was a celebration for my 80th birthday together with my wife and 3 (adult) children. The food was delicious with some interesting flavours. We also dined again in the evening - which was the same menu. We stayed the night in the very comfortable 4 -poster bed-room. Breakfast was a traditional offering of bacon, sausage and egg with mushroom and tomato. Very tasty.

My wife and I called on Thursday 4th August at lunchtime for a drink - I simply wanted to tick it off in my Good Beer Guide along with the Hand over the road. As I was driving, I ordered a lemonade and a half-pint of the guest ale for my wife at the bar and paid by contactless. My wife looked at the receipt and spotted I had just been charged £7 (SEVEN POUNDS!) for these two drinks. I assumed I had mistakenly been charged for a pint - it happens quite often - and went back to the bar to query it, emphasizing that it was only a half-pint. No, I was assured that I had been charged correctly, and a second (male) member of staff/management - who had not even been present when the purchase had been made - made some patronising comment about "oh well, since the sugar tax soft drinks are more expensive than beer". I did not pursue it further - I was on holiday after all and did not want a row. If that is the genuine price, it is quite simply a rip-off. If it was a mistake, then have the decency to acknowledge and correct it - as I said, it happens quite often and having worked in retail myself, I am quite forgiving. Incidentally, the place was nearly empty - I can't say I'm surprised! The Hand was quite full - a half-pint of beer there was £1.75, which is very good value I would say.

We were disappointed by the food & passive-aggressive poor service by the owners. The pub looks nice enough, but the underlining currents by the owners are diabolical! The menu is a little strange, to say the least; I eventually ordered pie & chips. My chips were undercooked, a dog came into our private room and shoved its nose up my dress. I love dogs, but not when I do not know the dog, and it's where I am eating. I'd appreciate it if you could let me know if this is a higher-end restaurant, why was a steak knife brought to the table on its own, for a meal did not set the table. & you gave tomatoes sauce in what looked like a MacDonald sachet. Please make up your mind, are you high end or NOT! While splitting the bill between the eight of us, we were all overcharged for our meals and drinks. Mine came to £46 for pie & chips & two G&T's The lady made it as difficult as possible with the bill while overcharging. I am a hot-headed woman. How rude!!! She was overheard talking about me when we left. I tried to talk to the lady about our bill & she made it impossible. Then wanted to charge a 10% service charge on top of overcharging. Disappointed we have all been affected by the covid pandemic. Being greedy is not the way forward. We walked in happy to be away on a surprise 40th birthday weekend, staying locally in a beautiful cottage with a hot tub to finish off or a long waited weekend to be treated in such an appalling way by the local pub. Shame on both the owners. I would suggest that maybe you are in the wrong industry and time to find a new career.

We had originally booked to eat here on the Saturday night as we were staying very locally self catering for a week. Unfortunately a very dodgy Friday night supermarket delivery left us in a dodgy position. One phone call to the fully booked West Arms and once we explained our position they could not have been more helpful and welcoming. The welcome when we arrived was lovely within minutes we were sat in front of a log fire (chilly June night) , glass of wine and welsh local beer and a menu.....bliss. So how good was the food 3 dinners and 1 lunch later varing from very local lamb to delicious fish and glazed bara brith with a salted caramel sauce. Brilliant wine list. Local beers. Fantastic welcome. And the views from the garden room...gorgeous. For the total foodies what I also loved is that the West Arms is that happy with their suppliers they will recommend them.....so another 2 nights we ate quality meat from their recommended butchers. Welsh black sirlion steaks were delicious. So do I recommend the West Arms...totally. Am I coming back...fingers crossed...very soon!

Visited the West Arms for food today and was totally taken aback with the ongoing passive aggressive behaviour from the owner. This I must say spoiled what should have been a lovely Sunday jaunt out.Though current Covid lockdown rules indicate table service only the particularly unfriendly owner kept coming to our table to insist we went inside to the bar to order drinks or food. I asked why were we being singled out when everyone else seemed to be receiving table service. This didn't seem to matter, he spent most of his time reminding us it was table service, in a strange way that only served to alienate and made us wish we hadn't bothered! Unfriendly welcome from an owner who obviously is in the wrong trade for he cannot do customer service. Could not recommend this establishment to anyone, try across the road at the well acclaimed The Hand for a far friendlier welcome.

I was hoping to find one positive thing about the dining experience at this pub. Booked a table, waited a while in the bar until someone noticed we were there, had to order our food at the bar because nobody came to the table, it took over an hour after ordering mediocre food, most of which we left on the plates as not at the standard we’d expect. This was once a fine country pub/restaurant in scenic surroundings with great food and a friendly atmosphere. Visited this pub for Sunday lunch. It was off the beaten track but it is worth the drive to it. Both myself and my wife opted for traditional roast beef and we were informed by the owner that it was locally sourced from a nearby farm. It was cooked to perfection as were the roast potatoes and the vegetables. The Yorkshire pudding was great. I opted for white chocolate bread pudding for dessert which was also very good. I loved the interior of the 17th century inn and the staff were extremely efficient and friendly. It’s priced accordingly in my opinion, £16 for the main course is on the pricey side but you get what you pay for in my opinion. I would thoroughly recommend a visit to this place.

We are staying in a holiday cottage just around the corner, and there are two gastro pubs to choose from. We have tried both and this comes in a very poor second. We pre booked our table, yet when we arrived there was no table reserved for us. We were “greeted” by two females as we entered, who did not exactly make us feel welcome. One of the females said they’d saved us a table in the lounge bar, but we could go in the restaurant if we wanted. We said the lounge would be fine, expecting to be shown to our table, but instead we got a wave of the hand and “it’s through there and to the right”. We made our way to the lounge bar and couldn’t see a table reserved so I asked the female behind the bar and she pointed to a table stuck behind the door saying “take that one”. When we objected we were told to just sit wherever we liked, so we picked a table by the window.Enter our waiter Sam, who did everything he could to make our evening enjoyable. I ordered the Lamb Chump and my wife ordered the Pan fried Chicken breast. Both meals were mediocre at best. The chicken was a bit on the dry side and my lamb ranged from well done to rare, depending on which bit I cut into. Nevertheless we ate it, mainly because we were famished and don’t like complaining. For dessert my wife had the Eton Mess which was delicious and I had the Banana Bread with custard which was instantly forgettable. The whole meal, including a bottle of wine, came to £71, so it’s not cheap. Along with the mediocre food the pile of dead wasps on the windowsill didn’t make the evening an enjoyable experience, although I suppose dead wasps are better than live wasps!Sam’s efforts mean that I have rated this establishment average rather than poor, but we will not be returning.

A truly memorable stay at the west arms. We were greeted very warmly by the very presentable and charming host Mark who seemed genuinely invested in how our journey was and if we needed anything before being shown to our room. We then were introduced to Mark’s beautiful and equally charming wife Nikki who showed us to our character room that overlooked the peaceful village out front. We went for a drive to a local tourist town and got a plethora of information and tips from our wonderful hosts. We later joined for dinner in the restaurant having a tipple in the bar with Mark and Sam (another charming member of staff) the food prepared by the chef and his team was outstanding with a real classic feel to everything without being labelled as dated. The rest of the evening blurs due to a fantastic bottle of wine and a few too many fantastically kept ales. Checkout was just as charming and a very warm goodbye and thank you from the wonderful Immi. Thank you all at the west arms can’t wait til next time.

Settled down in front of the open fire with a really good draft ale and chose our food from the varied menu (including a good specials board). Very helpful with the few queries we had (I’m vegetarian, and had to check one of the dishes). This is a seriously nice pub. The food is excellent if you like bespoke meals that are obviously cooked by a decent chef. If you know your food this is a great choice. The staff are friendly and Mark (landlord) knows his stuff. The beer garden has amazing views and they will even serve your food there if you ask. Highly recommend this place.

My family and I visited the West Arms for Sunday lunch the food was incredible! We were made to feel very welcome with 3 young children and out dog. We sat in the garden area lots of space for the children to run around.

There was more dogs than customers, people on next table sharing their food with a dog, another one lying down on other side of table even a dog behind the bar. Surely this is against all health and hygiene regulations! New owners have ruined it for us, they should run a dog kennel not a hotel!

Though it’s been years since we were last in the West Arms, we were in the area and stopped for lunch. It’s recently changed ownership, and we were really impressed. Attractive menu and good food, well tended surroundings, attention to detail and staff who were polite and helpful. I think the Hand has something to contend with these days! 5 stars!

Wir sind nur eine Nacht in diesem Ort, leider muss man sagen. Es ist so herrlich ruhig und trotzdem muss man auf eine gemütliches Restaurant und ein gutes Essen nicht verzichten.

This food makes your tastebuds sing. We had the pork main and banana bread desert. Wow! This is the kind of food you need after a busy day. After a stressful week or even just because it's so good.

This hotel changed hands in February 2018. I have been visiting it for over 60 years and can say that the food has reached the highest standard ever. The new owners have given the chef (who has been there for 28 years) his freedom to produce superb food, under their expert guidance. These people really know their stuff and gave us a most warm welcome. The staff were pleasant , efficient and served us with humour and knowledge of the product. I can not recommend this restaurant highly enough .

We visited the West Arms when we were staying at a rented cottage in the village. Our first visit was just for a drink - choice of 4 real ales all well kept - all the staff and the owners were extremely friendly and helpful - the various bars/lounges are all comfortable and nicely finished - clear signs of a recent refurbishment making the place feel both smart and welcoming.

Lovely choice on the menu with something for everyone locally sourced wherever possible. Breakfast was also good again with plenty of choice from full English to toast and jam

We past this wonderful Inn quite by accident, but my husband and I decided to pop in for a drink , we loved it so much we booked in for an evening meal the next night , despite us stay in another hotel over an hours drive away we wanted to come back here, this is a must see destination, for the food which was out of this world with taste, the best we have ever eaten, this Inn has had a fabulous high spec renovation since the new owners have taken over , it has a wonderful friendly team of people working there creating a fabulous atmosphere, which made you feel so welcome.

We were staying over the road in The Hand and had enjoyed an excellent meal there the previous evening. We were a little worried about eating at the West Arms in case it wasn't as good. However, we were not disappointed. A delicious meal. We had some drinks in the beer garden before the meal and it was gorgeous weather which helped, and the garden is such a beautiful spot - so peaceful. The food was excellent and the wine and staff equally good. We did have a little blip in that the red wine we ordered had come up from the cellar so was too cold, but they were very apologetic and so we chose a different wine (which was lovely - the Primitivo). It's funny that the village is small, but offers two outstanding restaurants/hotels.

Happened upon this place as staying locally. A very friendly new couple have just recently taken over this gem of a property with all its amazing period features and plethora of rooms! Very delicious three course meal, the standard was excellent! Certainly recommend the lamb! Excellent wine list and sounds like “more to come”

Visited with elderly inlaws recently, staff were very understading and we all enjoyed a first class sunday lunch. The beef was cooked as it should be and the blood orange tart was somewhat unusual but the sharpness of it with the caramel ice cream worked perfectly. Thank you very much will see you again soon.

Since my last visit (some years ago) the West Arms has undergone a refurbishment but has lost none of its charm. It still retains a welcoming non pretentious atmosphere with staff who were friendly and very welcoming . The food was divine - great ingredients, well cooked and beautifully presented. The al a carte menu was not extensive but there was ample choice to suit all tastes . My terrine , followed by medallion of beef and then rhubarb crumble was superb. Easily the best meal I have enjoyed out this year. I shall be returning soon again!! Many thanks to all. Diolch yn fawr.

Being local folks but new to the area we didn't need a room but went for Sunday lunch. WOW! It was stunning. Beautiful crisp roast potatoes, sweet honeyed parsnips, huge Yorkshire pud, loads of gravy and a generous mix of vegetables! With aperitifs, wine with dinner and dessert for 4 our bill came to just about £120. Our vegetarian was also well catered for with a vegetarian burger that us carnivores may well have swapped our roast beef for.

Thoroughly enjoyed a Family evening to celebrate my son's 50th birthday in the hotel's restaurant. The food was exceptionally good with a wide choice of dishes for children / adults alike. The presentation of the food was excellent as was the efficient service and helpful welcoming staff. The selection of draught beers was limited as were the guest beers, however there was a good selection of wines.Would recommend the restaurant for any special occasion

Dropped in for a pint and was underwhelmed. Reverend James and Sharpes Doombar, both mass produced uninspiring beers. Made do with cider in a bottle. Brains do some craft ales in a bottle or short run craft cask ales but none were at this hotel. Disappointed we moved on and found much better beer over the other side of the road at The Hand.

Had a very enjoyable meal here while staying in the village. In an out of the way village but worth traveling to, The service was good and food presented and cooked well. Quite formal and a little pricey but nice for a treat. The liquor coffee was properly made with the cream floating on top, unlike some places where they squirt it on. Managed to get a table without booking on Saturday evening.

We have been visiting The Drover's for around 25 years. As a full Family initially, now just the two of us. Peter and his Team never disappoint. The welcome is always friendly and we do enjoy a modest pre Lunch drink in the cosy snug out the back. The views of the river are spectacular. It was a bit chilly to be sitting outside on the balcony but one brave chap did take his coffee out there! The food, well, you can't call it 'just Sunday Lunch! It's a foodie treat! Plenty of beautifully cooked food. Always hot and tasty. The quality is certainly there as well. Cannot fault anything and the Sweets are to die for! The atmosphere is invariably pleasant. A good mixture of Walkers, Holiday makers and Locals. Thanks so much for everything over the years Peter. We're already in the process of booking next year's trip to Wales, so keep an eye out for an email soon!

Our first time here this morning. From the minute we walked in we was welcomed and seated. All staff were welcoming. Myself and fiancé ordered a full English, food was lovely not one fault and clear plates. I had a cappuccino which was tasty and perfect. We were approached and asked if everything was okay during our meal. We paid with cash and left a tip as we were very pleased. We will definitely be attending again on our next stay.

Great place to stay. A friend and I cycled to the area and stayed here overnight. The owner is very accommodating and friendly. The room is a generous size with all the facilities you would want, and you have access to an outside deck area with lounge chairs and table which is ideal on a sunny day. The breakfast was also lovely. The location was great as it’s a 5 min walk from 2 good pubs and a post office/shop

Mock timber frame manor house retaining much of its character and charm. No lifts. Breakfast was choose your own pre-packed cereals with a cooked option. Dinner was a mini-taster with delicious options which we watched cooked on TV cameras. The room was clean but dated with an en-suit crammed in. High windows restricted light and views of extensive gardens and river. The staff were friendly and willing but lacked service training. Guests our age do not wish to be called 'you guys'.
