Food fairly average - salad a bit tired looking and tasting. Staff were very rude and offhand, which was a shame . Wouldn't bother again.

Twice recently we have stopped here for hot drinks and cake while visiting the cathedral.Great atmosphere,as the seats lie under the beautiful sandstone arches. Our Espresso and Latte were of good quality,as were our slices of cake.We note that the Roast Dinners are very resonably priced,so intend to return to enjoy one of these.

Rather disappointed with this restaurant. Amazing part of the cathedral building surrounded by incredible architecture clashed with the ambience of the eatery. Someone had decided to aim for a vaguely urban/trendy vibe that simply does not work. Not helped by staff hanging around in “uniforms” that seem inappropriate in a cathedral. Please change the music! This may be a restaurant, but many will use it as a cafe, so a lack of tea served in a pot seems a strange choice. Cannot comment on the food as I only tried an extremely dry scone.

I would definitely return just not on a Sunday unless you book. Cathedral was very busy with mass taking place and visitors so took us a while to get a table. Eventually we got one indoors, but to the side of the bistro. Sunday Roast was lovely followed by a cream clotted scone. Plenty of tables outside but too cold this time of year. Staff were very pleasant. Good choice on the menu. Inside the bistro is not very big, a few more tables where we sat would be ideal. Looking forward to next visit

My wife and I met up with friends for lunch yesterday. Two of us ordered the fish & chips, while the other two ordered gammon & chips. The fish & chips were spot on, but unfortunately the gammon steaks were full of fat, and appeared to be undercooked. When asked by the waitress how are food was, my wife mentioned the gammon. She said she would pass her comments on to the chef. Now my issue is why ask how our food was, and pass those comments on to the chef, but then fail to return with any feedback? We stayed on long enough as we ordered coffee’s, so they had plenty of time to do so. The upshot of this is that for a long time we’ve highly recommended the Welsford to this particular couple, but now I doubt any of us will be returning. We understand that occasionally the quality of food can be compromised for many reason’s, and we’ve factored that into account in the past when we’ve been given a satisfactory explanation, which means we often return to give a place a second chance. Perhaps in the future you will review your actions when you get poor feedback, rather than leave customers totally dissatisfied?

Now called The Welsford Bistro, this was a welcome stop for a drink and a snack while were exploring the vast Liverpool Cathedral. The coffee was good and the cakes were delicious. There was plenty of seating, both inside (some tables being in alcoves) and outside, although you would need warmer weather than we had to venture outside. After placing our orders, the service was quick and efficient. The prices were very reasonable (£10 for two cups of coffee and two large slices of cake), especially given the surroundings.

We visit Liverpool often and the catehdral cafe is one of our favourite places for a coffee and cake. We really missed it over Lockdown. When we came back to the catherdral yesterday, we were so pleased to see the cafe had re-opened albeiit under a different name. Unfortunately, the staff were surly and disinterested, my scone was stale and I couldn't eat it and my husband had the same issue with his toasted teacake.

We visited with family on the Saturday in the early hours of the afternoon. The restaurant itself has a lack of tables for more than 2 people then you are greeted by the larger tables being occupied by two people so larger groups have to split up. We ordered:-Chicken burgerWelsford burgerBaked Potato with Cheese and beansChicken Club sandwich. Each of these meals was below the standard of even any greasy spoon cafe. The chicken club was sent back as it was cold only to be dissected, microwaved put back together and then returned to be eaten! The welsford burger was a frozen burger pattie that wasnt fit for consumption, the chicken breast burger was cold, the baked potato tasted like it had been reheated so many times it had no moisture left in it! The staff while friendly really had no leadership and didnt seem to know or care about what they were doing. They serve all of their hot drinks in paper cups and take a ridiculous amount of time to actually bring food (ours took 40 minutes and only arrived after they were prompted!). Needless to say we wont return and wouldn't recommend that anyone else eats here either, its only a matter of time before someone is made sick from under-cooked or reheated meat!

Some self-important member of the cathedral staff barged past as I was trying to settle my mum in her seat; I was not a happy bunny. However, one of the chefs saw what happened and, in passing, gave me a pat on the back and a smile. What a good man! Scouse arrived promptly and I was gobsmacked. I love food, I love cooking and I've eaten in Europe, Asia, the Caribbean and Australia. That bowl of Scouse I had was faultless, one of the best dishes that I have ever eaten in my life. My only criticism was the usual, the tea! For heaven's sake if we're being fed the best Scouse known to mankind, please stick another tea bag in the pot!

Went to this eatery today and bitterly disappointed having not been there for a few years...it has changed management which is a pity.As you walk into the beauty of a tiny restaurant within a beautiful building you are hit with the smell of stale cooking fat which attaches itself to your nostrils. We chose some 'Root Soup' with bread...it was delivered too hot to eat and with cheap, white bread, albeit of the uncut type it was still of poor quality. The soup was root vegetables and little else and was more like a sloppy stew than a soup. This is a franchise and not as it used to be when Cathedral ran it....it really is poor quality and more akin to a fast food outlet than the homely well cooked food and cakes that used to be here. First tried visiting The Welsford a couple of weeks ago. On entering the cafe there was an overpowering smell of burnt oil so we turned around and walked straight out. We decided to give the place another try, unfortunately the nasty smell was still present on our visit today. The cafe is rather small and most of the tables are for two so the four of us had to split up and sit at separate tables. Service was very slow and the cafe was freezing cold, a fan heater at the far end of the room near to the exit would be a welcome addition on a cold day! Eventually our drinks arrived, served by a miserable waitress who slammed them down in front of us! The cappuccino was possibly one of the smallest I have ever had, three or four mouthfuls and it was gone! The food arrived about ten minutes later, presentation was nice but by this point we were so cold having sat in the freezing cold room for nearly half an hour we just wanted to eat up and get out. Unfortunately our children who were sat at another table opposite, had to wait even longer for their food to arrive. Food was average, service was mixed, one member of staff pleasant the other one thoroughly miserable. Don't think we will be returning!

We were visiting the Cathedral to buy tickets and visit the Holy Spirit chapel which is a quiet place to pray. We used to eat here a long time ago when they had the self service referctory style menu - missed that because the food was really nice. Shame. We were after the lunch hour rush and it was almost empty. We ordered the quiche of the day and it arrived properly hot and delicious. Service was friendly and there was a little wait but heating food properly much nicer than blasted to pulp in the microwave. It is always a spectacular setting to eat.

We hadn't had a proper meal since arriving in Liverpool and it was a chilly day so we needed warming up. Decided to try the restaurant rather than the café and ordered the fish and chips with mushy peas, with a glass of white wine. It wasn't busy and we didn't have to wait too long. Everything had been freshly cooked, piping hot and nicely presented. It was delicious. Service was fine and the young staff pleasant. I was amazed to see the bad reviews - we were obviously lucky that day.

We nearly avoided this place due to the bad reviews, but glad we didn't. The food was really nice, and the service was good. Would definately recommend.

Decided to give this place another go having been slightly disappointed with the food once before. I ordered mushrooms in a white wine, cream and tarragon sauce. As soon as it arrived at the table I was overwhelmed by the smell of (processed?) cheese and the gloopy appearance. The taste was no better and it seemed to me as if the sauce had come out of a tin. I have made many white sauces and cheese sauces myself at home and cannot imagine how that had been produced with 'fresh' ingredients as was claimed when I complained. My husband forced himself to finish it off because the portion of quiche he'd ordered was so small, but he didn't enjoy the sauce either. In fairness, I was eventually offered my money back but I won't be returning.

Previous experiences at this place had been encouraging but a change in caterer came with a change in attitudes.Having ordered breakfast and drinks, and taken the crockery and cutlery back to our table, we waited more than 20 minutes for the breakfasts to arrive, and watched whilst every other diner had their orders (including drinks and cutlery etc) brought to their tables.Complaint handling not a strong point, either.

Ate here on Saturday 2nd Nov, had breakfast whilst visiting the Cathedral, I had sausage sandwich and it was the best food I had during my 3 day visit to Liverpool. My partner had a breakfast sandwich and my daughter had a grilled chicken sandwich. Lovely quality and well cooked. Highly recommend. Great service too. Just about managed to resist the cakes!

My friend and I had lunch here on Saturday. I had the blind scouse, which is a veggie version of scouse. It was served in a lovely cast iron pot on a wooden board. There was also a good sized chunk of nice bread and a small tub of red cabbage to go with it. It looked great and even better it tasted great. My friend had the sweet potato and tomato soup, again served in the same way, minus the red cabbage, He also really liked the soup.Anybody would find something they liked on the menu. I am pleased I could be accommodated because I am a vegan and it was good to be able to spend money here and help give the cathedral much needed coffers than go elsewhere. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the cost was very reasonable. This tasty meal set us up for an amazing three hour visit to this awe-inspring cathedral.

My wife and I lunched at the Welsford during a visit to Liverpool’s two wonderful cathedrals. Michelle had the falafel with hummus, tsatsiki and pitta and I ordered the blind scouse. Both were excellent, as was the quality of the service. I would recommend the Welsford to anyone visiting this part of Liverpool.

We were treat to lunch by The Canon today in The Welsford. We chose soup of the day which was butternut squash&sweet potato. This was served in a delightful small cast iron pot with a lid.All sat on a wooden board. It came with a chunk of lovely bread and was enjoyed by us 3 adults and our teenager.Next we had scouse. this too was served as the soup was and was truly scrumptious. Full of meat and tasty veg.We even managed a slice of toffee cake to finish...I need that recipe! It was "heavenly" The service was very speedy and attentive.Though the portions weren't overly huge they were very fairly priced.I(we) would return again to eat here.

I was confused by this place - it has the barebones appearance of a cafeteria yet tries to present quite homely food (scouse, fish and chips) in a trendy way which actually gets in the way of eating it. Fish and chips was fime, but the blind scouse (scouse sans meat) had zero protein and actually not a lot of scouse to go with a huge hunk of bread. THe setting is great though, especially when the terrace is open.

This small cathedral restaurant is first class. (It must be only time small is used in this enormous building!) We've been twice now - once for a private dinner and the second time when it was open to the public. The food was really good, all cooked in the kitchen at the far end. The fish pie from the à la carte was packed with prawns, mussels, salmon and white fish, in a lovely sauce, with mash and dill on top. The chips with the fish and chips were delicious, as was the home made tartare sauce. The coffee was top class, as was the service. Price was good too!My only complaint would be it can be draughty in that huge building, but manager told us they were aware of that, and the door to the outside terrace was going to replaced.Loved it! I expect we'll be there again in the future.

I have been a regular visitor to the Anglican cathedral for more years than I care to mention and always looked forward to eating in the refectory. Before this company took over the catering at the cathedral I had never had a poor meal. Quiches, home made pies, and divine puddings and cakes - all at reasonable prices and excellent quality. I have eaten here three times now and apart from the very first visit the food has failed to live up to expectation. The salads provided looked very good but the 'beef and ale ' pie did not resemble its name. It had some meat, but was laced so heavily with tomato and vegetables the beef and the ale were lost. My grand daughter ordered Lincoln sausages with 'onion gravy'. No onions and a large jug of gravy. They did accommodate her request for an alternative to the 'mash' which was good. After what used to be available, this 'restaurant' needs to go back to basics and lose the trendy appearance. Eating a pie from a small bowl set on a slate is not the easiest way to enjoy your food when it's a struggle to get it out of the bowl in the first place... a plate would have been good. The food is not as good value for money and needs to be much better for the cost. The staff are very friendly and obliging which is a plus but it doesn't out weigh the lack of quality of the food.
