I was in this pub a couple of weeks ago and the experience was very positive. We tried several beers and I have to say that the fish and chips are really delicious, I highly recommend it. The service, although not lightning fast, was still precise and we happily waited over our beers, knowing that the food would be worth it. The stew the person with me got was also very good. Overall, it's a place I recommend for a relaxing evening with great food and quality beers.

The bar staff are abominably rude, and seem to try to create an argument out of nothing. When asked politely not to put so much ice into a glass of gin, the response was for the bartender to fish it out with his fingers and proceed to serve the drink to me, and that was only the tip of the poor service iceberg. I used to like the friendly, helpful atmosphere here, but the staff are now a law unto themselves.

Up,out and about on a beautiful sunny Thursday morning my twin brother and I decided to jump the train down from Kirkby to Liverpool City Centre to visit some of the great pubs our city is justifiably famous for, one of the first we visited was Doctor Duncan's Pub, always had a good time here and so it proved on our latest visit. I love the look of this pub, interior is superb, multi roomed, wonderful decor and furnishings, a great looking serving bar, most beautiful room in this pub is the " tiled room " an exquisitely tiled room that's just a joy to view ,there's also plenty of seating options spread throughout this pub, its just a great pub to unwind in . We had a study of their beer range which I must say I was impressed with, in the end we both opted to have a stout from Beartown Brewery, these were served in pristine condition, we chilled out and soaked up the great vibe in this busy and popular pub while we sipped our stouts. A big fan of this beer style, its a dark, malty brew, hints of coffee, from the first sip till the last sup its very consistent, a classic British stout indeed, it's hardly surprising that this pub is so popular with ale's served in this good a condition . We really enjoyed our stouts in here before we moved on and although our visit was only fleeting as on every other visit to Doctor Duncons Pub we were totally impressed. Doctor Duncan's Pub is easy to locate along St John's Way. Opening hours are; Monday to Sunday, open from 11am. Well worth checking out if you're in the area.

Doctor Duncans Pub on St John's Lane is a very impressive pub that offer a very good food and drink's range and was one of the many places we visited on a day out in the city centre. Housed in a very impressive building that's got an amazing interior with brilliant decor and furnishings throughout the whole pubs multi-roomed interior.Theres one room that is completely tiled and look's truly amazing and when we visited this is were me and my twin brother sat. This superb pub offers a fantastic range of cask ales and as we're real ale drinkers it's a pub we always visit. When we visited here we had a few pints of cask ale's that where perfectly served and were well priced. This is a superb pub that's well worth a visit and easy to find from Queen Square bus stop's it's a short walk away.(This is my fifth review of Doctor Duncan's). This is a difficult one for me the A beautiful Victorians, Neo Gothic tiled room just past the bar. A raised level with pictures depicting the history of Liverpoo and Doctor Duncan. Now to the negatives.. The prices are extorsonatly high. The opening hours are viable and not consistent. The welcome received was not warm. The first word's were we are closing shortly. Iy was only 9.45pm. It was as if it was a problem you being there. Onto the facilities. The toilets were unclean and looked like that they hadn't been checked for hours 'If not at all. Great place for traditional Scouse, although they do sell out quickly, however you wouldn't be disappointed with anything you choose as they use good quality ingredients at a reasonable price. Beautiful interior, great selection of ales and the food is top notch and great value - only let down today was the number of items that were unavailable (pulled pork and fish - a star knocked off for that). I like this pub a lot. I have drunk there on many occasions and the beer is usually good with always some quirky options. The young bar staff are polite and efficient and the decor is comfortable and interesting. The average review relates to the food offering. The menu is small, which I like, but that usually means that the limited offerings are of good quality. My friend and I both went for the scouse , a safe option in the heart of the city centre on a cold wet winter tea time. What a disappointment! It was basically a bowl of mince with very little root vegetables. Now come on guys you don’t make scouse with mince. It was a bit watery but tasted ok but was very unsatisfactory. If you are going to serve scouse in Liverpool city centre get it right please. This won’t stop me visiting this very pleasant establishment but I will probably eat elsewhere in future

Was very disappointed on remembering Sunday this year and same last year. For years we have been coming to this pub and meet up with all the veterans. But this time this pub did not open its doors till 12pm on the dot. The staff stood waiting watching all of us outside freezing cold to come in, some of these men are in their late 80s. This pub has been a meeting point for years. But I let it go last year thinking it might be new owners. I was then surprised it happened again. The staff and owner should be ashamed of themselves as this is one day a year and should have the respect for all our veterans to open a little earlier, especially when they see these veterans stood outside waiting for them to open. By the time they aloud us in they had one bartender on, they have now lost a lot of business and respect for this year. Most of us walked out and will definitely not be back next year. I hope the owner reads this and listens to what I’ve said. It was so disrespectful of your staff watching the clock and laughing at these old veterans freezing and being rained on. Disgusting

We called into the pub for a drink on 28th September 2023 and decided to have some food prior to heading over to the football match. The ordering of the food was incredibly slow, after waiting for over 40 minutes we asked how long the food would be as we had to leave shortly. Their initial response, was 10 minutes, but then we were informed our food order had not been put through correctly. There was no sincere apology and actually the staff member was very rude when we said it was unacceptable. To be fair, the food did smell very nice, but unfortunately, I am unable to comment on the quality. As the food had been paid for, I requested a refund, where I was informed it would take 3-5 working days. The following week, I contacted the venue and requested an update. I was given a mobile number for the manager (Kate) and I left a voicemail. The phone call has not been returned. Today, 2 weeks later, I contacted the venue again and I was told I would be called back. Still no phone call! I am still waiting for the monies to be credited to my bank account!! I have no option but to raise this issue with the Financial Ombudsman. PS. I do not usually write bad reviews. But I feel I have no choice due to my experience.

We wanted a pub close to the Liverpool empire and we chose doctor Duncan's. It's location, the other side to st James park to the empire and lime Street station, makes it an ideal place for a drink or meal before a show or travelling back via train. The actual pub has a very old theme, with low lighting and old looking decore. It's also got a doctor's theme to it, with plenty of old doctors instruments and medicines on displsy. There was a good selection of drinks there and real ales which , the bartender "Reece" (Scouser with ponytail) was more than happy to give me a little taster. I went for pale ale "bear on a wire" and it was lovely. Reece was more than happy to talk to us , and made our visit extra special. We are leaving this lovely city today, via the train so we might have time for one of doctor Duncan's special brews!!!!!!!

Doctor Duncan's is such a wonderful place to go for a few libations as it carries a beautiful select of cask beers, which in the centre of Liverpool is a difficult thing to find. I started with a creme brulee sweet stout that was poured perfectly and tasted sublime, then a pint of juicy IPA which once again was outstanding. The decor of the place is in my view a mix of olde worlde and modern which makes it very relaxing and a pleasure to be in. In a word AWESOME!!. Lovely pub near Lime Street station but food was a let down. My husband is a fan of good real ale which this pub has plenty of. We have previously visited but only for drinks. Booked a table in advance for food. Arried to a quiet pub on a Monday afternoon. Staff very pleasant. No scouse left which I was dissapointed about as food choice is limited. Ordered 2 "pie of the day" £10 each. When they arrived just about warm enough, server said he would get us some cutlery, as if this was a favour. (Never understand why cutlery isn't brought before or with order in some venues) Slight delay meant food now luke warm. Pie crust hard and hardly any filling. As we were only customers did not complain and it was tasty and chips were nice. So my recommendation would be definitely visit this pub for drinks but can't recommend food as there are much better options in Liverpool. Appreciate that everyone's expectations is different but just my experience.

When we tasted it, it tasted really bad, like it had a bitter metallic aftertaste. It was meant to taste like passion fruit and gooseberries, it really didn’t. We took it back only to be told “ no one else has complained about it, and it’s meant to taste like that” it’s really NOT meant to taste like that lad. This place was recommended by a friend; Knowledgeable and friendly barstaff made a really positive first impression, and the decor and original British pub stylings really sold this place to me as a top pub that I'd love to come back and spend more time in, well-done Doctor Duncan's!

This is one of the finest traditional pubs in liverpool with a real athletic pub feel. That said it was built as an insurance office but still had that cosy feel of a traditional pub. Always with a great choice of ale and once again owned by the same company as Cains ales which now returned. Sadly on recent visit Cains ales are no more but we can hope for the future. Amazing ales on tonight though and great service from the guy on the bar, very welcoming and chatty. Keep it up guys

Very good Liverpool pub not far from Lime Street Station. 4 cask beers on handpump when I visited including a porter. The pub has an impressive Victorian interior with four different drinking areas, of which the green tiled room is particularly handsome. The pub’s name commemorates Doctor Duncan, the first chief medical officer of Liverpool and a campaigner against poor living conditions in Victorian Liverpool.

Wonderful pub in a fantastic location... They always have a fantastic location of cask ales including Liverpool own Cains Brewery ales and it's one of the only pubs in the city with a working fireplace and also It's close to Lime street Railway Station in case you need to get a train somewhere... Food is also available 🍴 Make sure you check out my video about this pub on my Instagram and YouTube pages -- @beerguideworldwide #stayhoppy ✌️

It's a nice drinking spot. We we're a little disappointed that there seemed to be less choice on the board than we saw advertised, but i think it was just luck of the draw and not a reflection on the pub. Relaxing atmosphere.
