Absolutely beautiful setting! Friendly and welcoming. Staff went above and beyond to cater for us and it was thoroughly enjoyable experience. Nice to see a proper pub with good food and lovely atmosphere. Thank you. We came in after a long day and had quite specific requests which were off menu and they catered for us is such a sympathetic and patient way, all with a smile and a ‘is everything ok? Do you need anything?’ Thank you!

What a fantastic little place this is. My dad and myself stayed here for 3 nights whilst competing at arena uk. On the first night some friends joined us for a meal in the restaurant and the food was lovely quick service and food piping hot. The landlord was extremely accommodating as we left early each mornings wasn't able to have breakfast, but offered that if we popped back he would have some bacon butties ready for us,and he did and they were delicious. Our twin room was clean tidy and the beds were very comfortable. We will definitely be back next year.

Our pork loin meat was extremely tough to the point we (3 of us who had ordered it) couldn’t eat it, we did politely let the waitress know and she said she would let the chef know but who knows if she did and nothing was said to us nor rectified. Service was extremely slow we had to ask to have our food order taken, drinks, plates taken away and dessert menu as nobody came to us at all. The waitresses (who were all friendly) said they were busy which isn’t their fault and unfortunately they were getting a lot of the brunt of it from most of the tables around us (one table waited an hour for their starter!) but why aren’t management putting on extra staff when they know they’ve got a fair few bookings and it’s a Friday night. That being said, there were plenty of empty tables. Food was mediocre and the service was poor. The whole place is feeling a bit shabby especially the toilets they could really do with a refurb! The white chocolate cheesecake was excellent though!

Went to this pub 2 weeks ago after 6months, staff had changed apart from lady on the bar. Our food was very good, but no one came and asked if food was okay. When we had finished our main meal, no one came and asked if we wanted dessert or coffee. The 2 young people serving had no customer experience at all. Not has smart has they used to be. The place was quite empty for a Saturday lunch time. Lots of empty tables. The toilets where masked with lots of bleach, has the drains smell. Also was not very warm again. We will go back to the Green Man at Ropsley where they have a lovely log burner and is always warm and cosy. The last two times we have have been, it’s been cold, and lack of customers.

We chose The Welby Arms as the menu looked good. Booked for 10 people so wanted us to preorder which we did (that's OK but you do miss out on the specials) . Despite pre ordering and the dining room only being half full we waited 45 minutes for starters (only 3 of us having starters) then almost an hour for our mains. One steak didn't arrive so this person had to wait a further 15 minutes for it to be cooked (we ate our mains slowly as we didn't want them to be left eating alone) The waitress apologised and looked very embarrassed. We then ordered 5 desserts and only 4 came, another thing missed off the order. The food was lovely but the service was awful. When we asked couple questions about the desert (due to a food intolerance) she didnt have a clue and didnt know who to ask and we didnt get an answer so that person went without dessert. When I asked for the bill the waitress said she was confused and didn't know what to do, she did go and ask someone after I suggested it. There didn't seem to be anyone in charge who we could approach. We paid the bill but didn't leave a tip which we would normally do.

Waited at the bar for 10 minutes before being told the restaurant was at the other end. Another 10 minutes before we were shown to a table in a scruffy room. No menus, not asked if we would like a drink. Eventually given one menu, still no offer of drinks. People who arrived after us had drinks. 20 minutes later we left. Disgusting lack of service.

Having dined here a year ago whilst at Arena UK I brought a group of 8 for supper this year and my daughter and I stayed overnight. We all ordered differently but the food and service was very good with generous portions - I had the steak pie which was excellent and recommended! The room was just perfect for a stay over but my lasting impression was the staff who really went the extra mile from assisting with the booking to ensuring our stay was as comfortable as possible. The icing on the cake was the takeaway breakfast for our early start. Thanks so much Welby Arms.

Have been using the Welby for years for family meals but recently on 2 visits in September the quality of the food has gone downhill. Fish and chips used to be large and well cooked, now the portions seemed to have downsized and batter is soggy. My mum had ham egg and chips and the ham was tainted and tasted old and was fatty and again about half the size from the time before. The chips are really tasteless and insipid and I really don’t care for them in sharing bowls, I want my food on my plate please. I recently had a salad bowl …..very small would hardly feed a child and the most minute coleslaw pot, barely a teaspoon full. I feel they are definitely cutting down on portion sizes yet the prices are quite high for pub grub, particularly shocked at prices for soft drinks

We visited at the end of August as an ‘end of summer’ lunch. On arrival the place felt quite cold. There were several other people dining and the service seemed about right. When the food arrived it appeared nothing more than average. Two burgers were over cooked and lasagna was clearly microwaved. Deserts were better, but overall the meal was nothing special. Plenty of better places around.

Sunday lunch was delicious yesterday and the new range of vegan options looks interesting. For us Timothy Taylor Landlord bitter is definitely a draw as is the range of gin (about 30!) The accommodation has recently been refurbished and is lovely and comfortable and good VFMA friendly, village pub - thoroughly recommend

We hadn’t been to the pub for several years but moving closer, we thought we’d try it as an A level celebration with granddaughter. Good menu and specials board and prompt service. Starters and mains were a bit of a disappointment though - tempura veg starter was tiny portion and no batter visible, veg lasagne looked microwaved, veg burger was over cooked and crumbly, but steak meal was fine. Desserts were OK and enjoyed. Just felt for the price, the food was very average and we were embarrassed for granddaughter’s unexciting meal. Sadly not on our list to return soon.

We came here for dinner yesterday as a big party. If I’m being perfectly honest, I would have enjoyed a Wetherspoons meal better - and I’ve had better from several.Firstly lasagne - this was a ready meal, heated and shared between myself and my mother as two meals. To say it was average was putting it kindly. Fish & chips - soggy batter, skin still on, chewy & horrible. The fish came on a plate on its own with no condiments nor presentation. With all meals the chips came separately on a sharing platter. Between the six of us we were given two sharing trays with barely any chips in them - to the point there was not enough for everyone to dither out between us - we even had to ask for more as my grandparents didn’t even get any? Not to mention the actual condition of the chips, oven chips/barely cooked and really tastelessThe staff we’re very rude, unorganised and gave dirty looks as they passed the table. Then when we were saying something, avoiding eye contact at all costs! We weren’t asked if our food was ok, nor were we approached by a manager after we actually did mention the quality of food.We have been to the welby arms many times over the years, and honestly to say our bill came to near enough £140 this time for the condition of food and service is a disgrace. We will not be returning. If I could rate a 0 I honestly would. We had to make food for ourselves on our return home.

We visited on a late Sunday afternoon. Most of the party wanted Sunday roasts and all were disappointed. One person ordered a side of onion rings - very, very greasy/oily and cold - when we complained we were assured they were not cooked from frozen! The presentation of the seasonal vegetables left a lot to be desired - unimaginative would suggest some though had gone into it!Large amount of pate for a starter but little bread (and no toast) to go with it. Do people eat pate 'neat'?I know we are still in Covid times but other pubs and restaurants manage to have sauces and condiments loose and not in tiny sachets - why can't this place.A good measure of satisfaction is - would you eat there again. The response is no.

Just been to this lovely pub for dinner. Menu very versatile. Normal pub fare and then much more. Small portion options available on most dishes. We were sat a fair distance from other occupied tables, there's loads of seating choices.Had a ploughman's and the vegetarian chilli both were delicious and big portions and very good value, to be honest for what you got they were very inexpensive. And the three staff members we spoke to were attentive and friendly. We didn't have enough room for the puddings but they looked delicious and hopefully will get to try them another time. Dined here during Sunday evening. Quality of food unbeatable but only 1 small bowl of vegetables between 3 people and very small amount of chips. We had to order more vegetables and chips to make a normal portion size which we were charged extra for. We dine out at various places around the area and found this meal much more expensive than anywhere else compared with the portion sizes. Have dined here before and probably will again, but just disappointing about veg and chips portions. Everything else unbeatable.

As a regular you expect your local to treat you with some respect and dignity. When we adhered to the covid guildlines and the rules the pub sets we were disheartened as a group that attend the pub on a weekly basis when we specifically rang and booked a table to then not be welcomed properly athough breifly acknowledged but leaving us to show ourselves to the table we booked and sit and wait for drinks watching other people be served even when they walked in after us. We sat and waited to be told that they didnt know we were there. Such a shame for a pub thats usually on the ball.

At last like being released from a prison sentence we were able to book a meal at this lovely village inn. Full social distancing in place didn't detract too much from the feeling of normality of our first meal out for four and a half months. Well organised staff met us as we entered on the one-way system and took us to our well separated table. As always, the food was delicious, plentiful and presented beautifully. The masked staff ensured that we felt comfortable with all aspects of the new rules and before long it began to seem like a normal night out. This is definitely a great establishment providing a safe and enjoyable place to dine out.Even if you wanted to 'dip your toe in the water' so to speak and feel a little of trepidation in doing so, you would do well to sample the fare here as it is run in a very polished but friendly way. We called in here just before the restaurants and pubs were forced to close. We thought that a quiet retaurant/pub would be safer than a crowded motorway services. They were almost deserted: only one other couple in the restaurant while we were there. The staff were really helpful and prompt during what must have been a very distressing time for them. They were very willing to amend the items on the menu to suit our preferences. Our food seemed freshly prepared. The portions were large. The menu choice was a good mix of traditional and unusual choices. Both our meals were delicious. There were a good number of choices for vegetarians. The toilets are on a lvevel with the bar and restaurant and there was a wheelchair accessible entrance from the car park. This seems to be a good place for those with mobility problems. At no time did anyone ask if our meal was satisfactory as I had to ask a waitress when she eventually passed by for another drink. We noticed at the end of the restaurant where the food comes out there were three staff just talking and not looking after the customers.I hope this was a one off as we did not know any of the staff on that night. There are some mixed reviews for this pub but we can only speak as we find. We have eaten here a number of times, lately yesterday for Sunday lunch and it’s always been lovely.Firstly we love that they have a separate bar for drinkers, it’s not fair on people who just want a pint to be surrounded by diners, equally it unsettling if you are ordering food and locals are glaring at you so the separate bar if fabulous. The service particularly on a Sunday is very slick and the pad is ready with your name on it. Service was friendly enough albeit inexperienced youngsters who don’t always spot everything but they were mostly on the ball. And so to the food. Portions are large and the meat and Yorkshire’s lovely. We were offered any sauces we wanted with our roast dinners. Both plates came piping hot and I love that. We liked the good selection of veggies, particularly cauliflower cheese. Will definitely be back for Sunday lunch

We've been here twice fairly recently when visiting family in the vicinity and have enjoyed our meals and visits both times so we will no doubt go there again. We all enjoyed our meals (both times). It also suits my elderly mother well because so many of their main meals are available as a small portion which doesn't overwhelm her and also means not paying for something there's no chance that she can eat.

Even though the pub was busy and there were only two willing waitresses on duty we had an excellent meal without being harried to "eat up & go". Other guests were friendly and chatty which made for a relaxed evening. The sticky toffee pudding was beyond delicious ....

The Welby Arms is well worth a visit and a good idea to book, we visited on a Saturday evening and it was busy in the bar and the restaurant, excellent food, can recommend the Curry and the baked mushroom starter, good service.

Called in on our journey to Norfolk needing a quick meal as we still had another 2 hours travelling and didn’t want to arrive too late at our bed and breakfast in Norfolk. Perfect choice - friendly staff, tasty meal with good sized portions and a quick professional service. Pub homely and welcoming. Spot on for us!

Hearty food, done well and super quick. Very busy pub. Staff working hard, welcoming landlord ... plenty of choice of real ales; standard beers and gin! 😁

Called in upon passing (not planned), very warm welcome, great lunch menu with smaller options on most meals. Food was delicious. Lovely garden with benches at front also. Only slight issue was lack of parking but nothing that would put me off going again.

Called in not knowing whether this pub would be open or not, but luckily it was. Had a lovely lunch, and was happy that they are able to serve small portions. Service excellent. Will definitely call again.

Visited as a couple recently after recommendation for evening meal. Pub had been busy due to a fete. We booked a table for 7pm, ordered our meals but waited 65 minutes to be served. Other diners arrived after us and were served starters and mains before us. We enquired about our service and were told was coming “soon” but waited a further 25 minutes. The meals themselves were poor - my fish & chips were tasteless, the batter being unflavoured (despite being advertised as beer batter) and unsalted. My wife’s chicken & bacon with a Brie sauce was a tough chicken breast served in what looked like soup. On paying the bill I mentioned the long wait to be told”we have been very busy today, you know!” and no apology.

On a stopover at the Travelodge on the A1 whilst going on the long trek from the NW to Suffolk, we chose to eat at this nearby pub. Good, honest , wholesome food. Most enjoyable.

We often pop in here rather than going in a service station. Much, much better and the food is excellent. I had a baguette with mushrooms in a Stilton and garlic sauce. Brilliant. My wife had bacon with salad and black pudding. Very good. Sticky toffee pudding to finish with which was good.

We have friends who live in the south of England about an hour 15 mins and we live in the north of England about the same travelling time. We discovered the restaurant at the Welby arms about 12 years ago. We now attempt to have annual meet here. Today we returned and as always the food was fantastic and reasonably priced, the staff are friendly, accommodating and helpful nothing is any trouble. Once again thank you for a fabulous meal and allowing us to catch up with our friends.

Stopped at this place for dinner as we were staying close by and wanted to support somehwere local. The food was average, beware- I was looking forward to my pie but when it came it was just some meat on a plate with a round of puff pastry on top, no sides, it tasted alright, a bit dry but it was not a pie and I wouldn't have ordered it had I known, it went cold very quickly. Allington is a beautiful beautiful village and it was nice to walk around after the meal.

My fiancée & I ate here recently when we had a midweek break in the area & we thoroughly enjoyed our meal here. Friendly, attentive staff, relaxed atmosphere & probably the best curry we’ve had in quite some time. I’d recommend this pub to anyone looking to eat out in the area & will definitely return if we’re ever passing by

Tucked away from the A52 is the Welby Arms, in a quiet village called Allington, its a classic British pub with a large restaurant, the specials are almost as much as the main menu. Lots of choices, good range of alcohol and the lambs liver was awesome, the Key lime pie almost as good as Hooters. Great place for food & drink in a pleasant atmosphere.

Our family party of 20 visited the Welby Arms to celebrate a 70th Birthday with a surprise Sunday lunch . The roasts served were generous and tasty but let down by the vegetables . They were served with only 2 small roast potatoes and the selection of vegetables was vast quantities of mash with a small amount of cabbage and very salty carrots. A separate portion of cauliflower cheese only allowed for a spoonful each . The salmon chosen by two guests was well cooked but despite requesting extra cabbage for the non potato eating guests only the selection dominated by mashed potato appeared . As for desserts the cheesecake was well liked but we were disappointed with the creme brûlée’s demerara sugar top that was not brûléed at all ! The cheese and biscuits was mean on cheese and had a poor biscuit selection tired grapes and no celery as it had run out. The pub was busy and on the whole the service was good however having seen the great reviews I was a little disappointed

We found The Welby Arms via a TA search in the Grantham area and it proved to be a great find. Even on a Monday, it was busy. My husband chose the haddock and chips and enjoyed it. I ordered from the Specials board: the homemade fish pie. It was packed with fish and was delicious.

Seems very quiet and uninviting since the Assistant Manager left to run her own pub. I would travel to her new pub but its 80 miles away! There's no conversation or interaction from staff, no engagement, just a very quiet sterile atmosphere in the bar area. Sure food is great but I visit for a pub experience not restaurant.

Love this place, we usually visit weekends, afternoon/early evening. Friendly atmosphere. Traditional old English boozer in the historic area of the town, with real fires in the winter. Sports on the telly but not "in your face", there's plenty of nooks and crannies for chatting with mates. Usually about 3 real ales to choose from, plus the expected lagers etc.

Sadly, The Rose has closed down, and is now all boarded up. There had been a "For Sale" notice last month, but even this has gone. From a local resident.

Stayed here when visiting friends. As you will see from the photographs, it is very poorly kept. There was a very large spider when we arrived and the person who booked us in was less than friendly. Food was okay although no breakfast was provided. Would not recommend this place at all. Heating also went on the blink so we were brought an electric heater until they could fix the boiler. Money needs to be spent here urgently.
