Very disappointing visit. We had afternoon tea and despite two telephone calls before our visit notifying staff that my sister is celiac and therefore cannot eat gluten we were after waiting 30 minutes given two normal teas. My sister had also requested no fish on her sandwiches but when the second plate of food arrived it still had a crayfish sandwich and had to be returned for a second time. Whilst waiting for the correct food a cat came into the dinning room which is totally unhygienic. The sandwiches that i had were dry and one had a square of processed cheese which is unacceptable when paying £24 pp. The salad garnish was obviously old and inedible . My sister did not eat her scone as it was identical to mine and was not confident it was gluten free. No offer of different tea to the english breakfast tea we were served. We left feeling that it was not value for money and that no one was really bothered about the service or quality of food.

Lovely venue and very friendly staff but unfortunately the food is disappointing. The meat dishes are at harvester level and the vegetarian dishes include pizza and pasta (how original). There is nothing on the menu for gluten free vegetarians and the salads come with a cheap dressing from a jar. It's such a shame considering it's a lovely place.

Absolutely beautiful food yet again at this hotel restaurant!Huge compliments to the chef for such mouth watering food, literally spoilt for choice. The menu is full of glorious combinations and everything is served to the highest quality. Everything is cooked to excellency and literally your taste buds burst with every mouthful. Would definitely recommend the Staffordshire English breakfast.... Its devine. There's your traditional restaurant food like beer battered cod and chips, or you can have the chefs specials which I would highly recommend, and you have to sample the apple pie with clotted cream....... Its well worth the extra fitbit steps to burn it off ;-)Portions are very generous, but well worth the indulgence. If only we stayed long enough to sample the whole menu!Definitely coming back, thanks again for a beautiful weekend of glorious food, relaxation and the highest level of hospitality, see you all again very soon!

I cannot fault the food and service we had last night. I had booked my table online and had added the comment 'if it's nice could we sit outside' On arrival we were asked if the weather was nice enough for outside, if not we could sit inside, brilliant personal service. We had 3 courses and everything was spot on I cannot fault a thing. The sirloin steak was perfectly cooked and rested and full of flavour. Becky the restaurant supervisor had time for everyone whilst making sure everyone's needs were met and made it seem effortless. We had such a good time we booked another table as we left. Think this could be our new local. The views from the garden are pretty special too.

A pleasant afternoon tea, but not the best. There are other places nearby more worthy of a visit. No choices of tea, just a normal black tea, no extra sandwiches offered and a bit short on ambience. The weather wasn’t goo so we had to sit inside, a shame really as the gardens are lovely. It would be good to sit in the lounge for tea as the dining room can feel a little empty.Lovely China tea set, spoiled by a plain, basic, earthenware, white teapot. Wedgewood can do better

Of course the setting is beautiful but the afternoon tea is an absolute rip off. The presentation was not at all like the picture advertising it. £17:50 per person for a two rounds of bread with ordinary filling, a warm scone with a tablespoon of cream between two and a couple of small cakes. We had to ask for a pot of tea or we would have been left with the two soft drinks we asked for when we were seated. The Tiffin tea which is basically the same without the two small cakes at 11:95 per head would have been a bit more acceptable but we were not given this option over the phone This means that we paid £5:55 each for two tiny cakes. We were not asked if we would like anymore of the 'unlimited tea' and we left after 45 minutes. Very disappointing especially as it was meant to be a treat for a 60th birthday.

All round it was a lovely afternoon and a reasonable price. We weren’t hurried along and the tables are well spaced for privacy and a nice atmosphere.

I love the decor and style of this place. This was my second visit, and this time I did not do the full Afternoon Tea in their salon, just the Cream Tea and their Trio of Cakes at the cafe but both experiences were enjoyable as well as their tea. I just visited Bettys of Harrogate so I am quite sure I would be slightly critical but I really liked their tea. Their wanderlust tea are divine. Tasty home cooked food in a lovely setting . Staff are lovely and very professional. I had the chicken and leek pie which was very tasty. My only comment is the music in the dining room. It's quite loud and in my view not a suitable genre for such an elegant place - in my view some classical /jazz or piano type music would be more appropriate and at background volume levels . They kindly turned it down when i mentioned it. It's a similar thing at breakfast where they play local radio including adverts again at raised volume levels . If they just fixed this then all would be perfect.

The food was extremely well cooked, pleasantly presented, flavoursome and excellent. Breakfast, similarly, plenty of choice and cooked to order. Simply the tastiest breakfast I've ever had. Not huge portions of any one item, but plenty of items in a "full house" breakfast. Fruit, cereals, savouries, kippers, pretty much anything available for healthy eating as well. Faultless!

Four of us visited here for afternoon tea the day before Mothering Sunday.Overall, we very much enjoyed the experience. The house is beautiful and the grounds /views are stunning. The food was delicious, particularly the scones! Beautiful and light served with jam and clotted cream. Best scones I've had in a long time.Attentive service from very polite staff. The reason I can't give this 5/5 is because as quite often with these afternoon teas, we were served bagged tea. I know loose leaf is messy, but really, that's what should be served. This might sound incredibly pedantic, but loose leaf tea would have done the beautiful Wedgwood china far more justice. That being said, an extremely pleasant experience.

Have just come back from afternoon tea with family and am really disappointed. I've had other afternoon teas which have been much more value for money and food quality was much better. After declaring some allergies in advance, there was no mention of anything being considered when the food came so I checked about my nut allergy, the response "well we don't make anything here so whilst none of the cakes have nuts in them, we can't guarantee they weren't manufactured on a line with nuts". I don't eat cream and was told it's ok it's buttercream that's not the same! The sandwiches were fine, moist, just enough filling (4 soldiers per person). The cakes however were dry and far too sweet (1 mini Victoria sponge, 1 Viennese whirl and 1 "profiteroles" shaped Eccles cake). The scones were the treat though (only one per person) plenty of jam though and one small bowl of clotted cream (for 8 of us). We had to ask for more tea on a few occasions and weren't asked if we wanted anything else extra at all. Won't be going back here, will definitely try others next time. Sorry

This is a classy restaurant, therefore portion sizes are quite small but the food is incredibly good and very rich so you will not leave feeling hungry. Prices are pretty high but you get what you pay for. It is a lovely building built for the Wedgwood family back in the height of the pottery industry in Stoke and now converted into a hotel and restaurant but it retains its character; the interior is lavished with Wedgwood pieces. Our large group of 11 had its own room so it is ideal for large groups but of course booking ahead is essential. Our room had lovely views across the Staffordshire countryside. This is a top class restaurant that is ideal for special occasions and I would recommend it.

We booked a family meal for my 50th Birthday at the Upper House. We reserved the table in the bay window, and the sun shone brightly through the windows on a late Friday evening. On our way into the restaurant, we met the Head Chef Paul, who greeted us warmly and said he looked forward to hearing our comments after the meal.We all ordered different starters, and we were advised that there would be a slight delay as they were holding a prom there that night. We were given a basket of different breads and balsamic vinegar to tide us over. The breads were found were different flavours, and very tasty, and finished quickly, we were offered another basket, but we say no, as we didn’t want to ruin our main meals. The starters arrived and we all happily tucked in. We each had selected a different started and they all were extremely delicious and very filling, the flavour seems to spring into your mouth, and we all waiting in anticipation for our main meal. After about a 10 min wait the main meals arrived. We had selected three different mains from the menu between us. I remember my fiance and myself selected the pork, which we found to be succulent and perfectly cooked. The mash potatoes just melted in the mouth and were a perfect complement to the pork. My mum tried the chicken, as she wasn’t too sure what to have, and she thought she would with the safe option. The chicken just fell apart when she went to cut it, if was so tender and moist, with flavours that mum said were out of this world. My sister and brother in-law went with the Beef, which fell off the bone for them. The sauce went extremely well, and the seasonal vegetables were cooked to perfection. We all cleared our plates and sat there belly very full. The dessert menu was then bought round, and we all selected the trio of mousses. They were all lovely, but my favorite was the lemon, it was something special, I just wish the pots has been bigger. My fiance loved the chocolate, so we ended up swooping our pots so I had 2 lemon and he had 2 chocolate. We ended the evening with coffee, and earl grey tea. The waiting staff were very attentive and kept checking that we were ok, and even Paul the Head Chef popped out a few times from the kitchen to make sure that everything was ok.The perfect end to a perfect day.My fiance and I couldn’t wait till the next day, as were getting married at the Upper House as well, but that’s going to be another review….

Took my Maiden Aunt here, with my wife, to celebrate her 83rd birthday! She has been known as a fussy eater in the past, no difficulty in this establishment! The food was locally produced, perfectly cooked and presented in fine dining style. Parking is easy and the ambiance superb. There was a wedding going on at the same time but you would have thought it was miles away. The staff were friendly and alert, explained the dishes as the arrived at the table, great selection of wines to compliment the meal and reasonable priced to suit any budget. This is a definite recommendation!

Went for Afternoon Tea on the 5th March. We chose the Wedgewood Afternoon Tea which came with 8 finger sandwiches between the two of us with 4 flavours, ham, coronation chicken, savoury cheese and tuna. Then came the lemon drizzle cake, profiterole and mini Victoria sponge all garnished with fresh strawberries, blackberries and red currants. To top this feast off was a large, light as a feather, fresh baked scone accompanied by strawberry or raspberry jam and fresh cream. There was a choice of teas and coffees in with the price. I had Earl Grey tea( 4 cups full in the pot) and my friend had a cappuccino coffee. She also had a small bottle of rose Prosecco for £6.95 (2 glasses full). We sat in the conservatory which gave beautiful views over the terrace, gardens and surrounding countryside. With the sun full on it can get quite hot in there so there is the option to request a table just inside in the main restaurant if preferred. The Décor is beautiful and the Hotel is in a lovely setting.

Dined here with friends for a post Christmas catch up last week. I felt that on the whole, the service and food really let the beautiful venue down. The menu consisted of a choice of 3 starters, mains and desserts which was quite limited. The menu was also a photocopied A4 paper handout, rather than a quality printed menu or wallet, which when sitting in a beautiful dining room, felt a bit cheap. Staff seemed very inexperienced eg: serving soup without soup spoons, not knowing whether cabernet sauvignon was red or white wine, or they were over attentive eg: asking if our meal was ok before we had even had our first mouthful, or asking if we were ready to order desserts 5 times in less than 10 minutes. There was no manager presence either, as the restaurant seemed to be run by the waiting on staff. Food was ok, but nothing memorable or outstanding and the presentation was pretty basic. My wife said her soup was lovely, but everything else was ok. My meal was nothing more than ok. Considering that the set menu price was £28 for three courses, I expected to be impressed, which sadly was not the case. Better food quality and value is not that far away at The Wayfarer or David's at Trentham Gardens. On the plus side, the lounge was a lovely area for pre-dinner and post-dinner drinks and the log fire was very cosy. Wouldn't hurry back unless I hear of a dramatic improvement.

Can I say Phil and the team have been fantastic. The attention to detail and support provided for afternoon tea for a lady that is poorly has been incredible, rearranging tables and chairs to fit her needs was so kind. Nothing was too much trouble. I would like to say a personal thank you and I will be visiting with my family. The food, and cakes were beautiful and they certainly had enough top up of tea and coffee. The setting is beautiful very relaxing. I would recommend this to any of my friends and family.

Upon arrival we were ushered into a lovely oak paneled lounge where our pre-meal drinks were served. From there we were taken to the gorgeous dining room where tables were beautifully set. When we booked we asked for a table for two by a window. This was a delightful position looking out on luscious green Staffordshire countryside. High ceilings, beautiful chandeliers and fine decor made this a great environment for an enjoyable meal. For starters I had soup, which was excellent, and brie on beetroot, which my wife enjoyed. We both had Staffordshire Maple Pork, which although good, we couldn't taste the maple! 2 courses for £16 each (lunch menu) was not bad value for such a lovely setting. Service was good but not fast. Allow plenty of time to enjoy the ambiance while you wait for your food. Highly recommended.

Awful afternoon tea in delightful surroundings. The gentility and general ambiance of the place is not reflected in the food. When dining at a restaurant that carries the Wedgwood name one can (or should) expect a certain standard. The sandwiches consisted of corned beef, egg with some sort of salad cream (or it might have been sandwich-spread - who knows) and the ubiquitous ham, all served on sliced white bread. Scones were OK'ish, likewise the small cakes. We were a party of 14 who had pre-booked. When we complained, we were told that they had run out of the usual sandwich fillings, such as smoked salmon. We were given a discount. My issue is that had we not said anything, then nor would they have. A professional establishment that takes pride in itself and the quality of what it provides should have told us upon arrival that there was a problem. I can only assume that it works on the principle of the low expectations of its clientele. Disappointing indeed.

Visited this gem of a Hotel on business and had the pleasure of eating at the Hotel restaurant; The Wedgwood.I'm not a big eater, so I didn't have a starter or dessert, and went straight for the main. While making my selection, I was served with warm onion bread with a balsamic and olive oil dip...a nice touch. After a difficult choice (there was a well balanced variety of options), I plumped for the shin of beef, which was served with garlic mash and asparagus. The beef was so tender, and the gravy full of flavour...all in fact was delicious, a good portion size and beautifully presented.Looking forward to going back and trying the rest of the menu (will try to have space for starter and dessert next time). The service was also excellent, attentive but not intrusive. The Hotel is beautifully positioned and has some breathtaking views.Highly recommended

We spent a fortune on a special occasion only for the bad attitude of the Bar manager to spoil it.Food was good. The waiting on staff were very polite but lacking basic serving skills eg we all should eat together, open the expensive wine, let us taste it, and do not spill it over the guests. We had a terrible bar manager with very bad people skills and it spoiled our night. Any request or comment was met with either a scowl or rebuff. I would never return or recommend following his rude behaviour.

I was with a party of five dining at the Upper House yesterday (15 May 2014). The other four persons seemed happy with their meals; so I should state that my one star rating is only my own evaluation. Also I want to say that the waiters and reception staff were pleasant and mostly efficient. Starter: The “vegetable” soup starter was the most edible item – similar to something you make at home by popping in various leftover veg into a food processor then adding stock – I would describe it as “non-descript”. Main course:The main course was “The Upper House homity tarte”. Online websites describe homity as a “traditional British open vegetable pie. The pastry case contains a filling of potatoes and an onion and leek mixture, which is then covered with cheese.” So what did I get? - a small pastry case with about 3 tablespoons of smooth cheese sauce (it may have been cheese sauce, but couldn’t taste any cheese) covered by what seemed 3 tablespoons of chutney (which could explain my not tasting any cheese!). I should add that the menu description included veloute sauce (which is a white sauce made with chicken, pork or veal stock) but the meal was vegetarian so the “veloute” I guess was just some French added to make it sound posh. Dessert:For dessert I ordered “Whole cherry cheese cake. With chocolate crumb and vanilla cream made by our own Head Chef”. What I got was a slice of plain cheese cake (ordinary biscuit crumb – no chocolate crumb), the appearance and solid-ish consistency of a cheap supermarket cheesecake. There was a small dollop of ordinary cream on it and three cherries (from a tin) decorating the plate. Summary:The food was somewhat disappointing, but the major factor leading to the one star was the misleading menu descriptions. I call it “misrepresentation of goods”, and certainly do not expect this at an expensive restaurant. And also irritating is the fact that I didn’t want to complain to the restaurant at the time and probably spoil the celebratory atmosphere of the diners. Perhaps they count on the fact that many middle-class English people don’t like to make a fuss. A friend and I go for lunch weekly to a wide selection of pubs in our town – and the great majority has food more than twice as good as at The Upper House, at less than half the price.

Afternoon tea was very overpriced. It was mediocre at best, and cost us £80 for 5 people. Insipid jam, runny cream, stale cakes. We arrived and had to wait half an hour (they weren't even busy) before we were shown to our table. Considering how much we paid per head, there was hardly enough decent food for the table. The sandwiches were very low in numbers, and the platter was overstuffed with cheap stale pieces of what I think was trying to be chocolate brownies? Would absolutely not recommend - save your money and go elsewhere!

Booked a Veggie coeliac lunch for my Wife's birthday two weeks in advance and double checked the day before that it was all ok (veg nut roast), and I was told it was all in hand. Unfortunately and to my dismay there was nothing prepared, "they had not got the ingredients to make it with". After numerous phone calls, resulting in nothing being resolved we certainly will not be going again, as dietary requirements are not met.

Good food, poor portions, service by foreign waitress was the slowest I have ever had. My wife had eaten her meal before mine arrived. 15 persons had I bowl of mixed veg between us. 2 out of 4 desert options were not available. Menu was completely different to the one on line. Off my list for ever!!!

A great afternoon tea experience set in beautiful Staffordshire countryside. My partner and I were lucky enough to have scheduled tea on a sunny winter's day, and so the view out of the bay window (in which we were seated) was remarkable. The food itself was well-prepared and arrived fairly quickly. The price for the amount of food and service was fair. A great way to experience a traditional English institution.

I was amazed that I hadn't come across this place after living here for all this time but delighted that I have now. This wonderful establishment is a delight to behold, from the lounge where you sit and have pre-meal drinks next to a crackling fire, to the beautiful restaurant itself with its three paintings depicting the life of Francis Wedgwood and beautiful views. The staff were extremely courteous and professional and the food did not disappoint. We found the menu incredibly good value for two courses as the quality was excellent. The portions were large, particularly with the vegetables to accompany our main dishes, but we enjoyed every bit of it. After our meal, we were invited to look around the building afterwards. Everywhere had such a homely and cosy feel, it really was an exceptional experience.

Boxing Day lunchtime, travelling back home after Christmas with family. Determined to avoid motorway services. Came off the M6 at Junction 15 (Stoke), picked up the A34 and discovered this delight. No booking? No problem. We don't have any tables free in the restaurant, but you're welcome to eat in the lounge if that's OK. Drinks in front of a glorious log fire; views over Barlaston Common; and freshly prepared food, well presented without fuss on what was obviously a busy day at the office. What a delight to come across such welcoming and accommodating hospitality in this country and how different from the frequent response, "Sorry. We're fully booked". Well worth another visit and possibly a stay to visit the Wedgewood Museum or Trentham Gardens.
