Lovely atmosphere and great service even though we were muddy from our walk.

Lovely place by the canal ...good food too

I am local to the Duke but generally don't use it. There was a pop up restaurant 2 chefs on the car park, so we tried it out. It was very nice even though they had ran out of most things. " our fault for leaving it late"We sat in the beer garden had a drink from the Duke and had an enjoyable couple of hours. I like what they're doing with the pop ups they've had a few now and at the same time encourage people to use the pub. Will definitely return

We called but it has changed hands and is undergoing some work. They said hoped to open in a few weeks. Will give it a try.

Great Pub, friendly staff and good food and drinks.

Booked a table for Mothers Day with a party of 7 adults and 2 children. Food was nice and Staff were very attentive. Glazed parsnips were gorgeous and would definitely visit again

We took the 4K walk from our house to try out this local pub as we hadn’t been for years. Great tasty food. Would recommend and we will be back again.

We visited today family of four, me and my husband had the Sunday dinner, it was so lovely, portion was good and it tasted all fresh. The kids enjoyed their meals and puddings. This is our 2nd time here since the new owners have taken over and both times have been fantastic.

Food was delicious. Steak cooked as requested, lovely chunky chips, mushrooms, tomatoes and peas. Staff were very friendly and service was attentive. Good selection of drinks and the lounge was homely and warm. All three of us enjoyed our visit and will certainly be returning.

Fantastic food and lovely staff. Service was quick and the food came out quick too so we werent waiting ages. Food portions were great and the price was worth it. Not too expensive either. Definitely get what you pay for. I had the hunters chicken which came out great. No complaints and they are happy to make any changes to your meal if asked. Definitely worth a visit.

This used to be one of our favourite haunts before the previous landlord gave up as mentioned in a previous post. We were aware that it's recently reopened under new management and have to say that our experience was excellent and nothing like some of the other recent reviews. The rooms have been refreshed so a nice atmosphere, our food was excellent and the service was just right. We're aware that breakfasts are now available so may give that a try in the near future.

Reasonably priced, warm and friendly atmosphere, and great food! The Sunday dinner was lovely. This place is definitely worth a visit.

Absolutely shocking! Bear in mind if you have been before November 2023 they have recently had new owners. To start the food is not the best but edible in some proportion. We ordered food at 5:25 and they decided to come to us at 6 to tell us that what we ordered wasn’t was not on the menu. Then once our food had arrived which we had a double beef and chicken burger, the beef burger was burnt and cooked from frozen, bear in mind it is ALL home cooked food! I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL , bear in mind the prices are also far from reasonable. £18 for the burger we had and if I am honest McDonald’s could have put on a better show than these with an £8 Big Mac meal!.

Unfortunately, this was one of the worst dining out experiences we have had! The woman who was serving eventually came over to us and complained that she wasn’t even meant to have started her shift yet. Then eventually a younger waitress came and took our order, but had to come back 3 times to tell us various items we had ordered were no longer available. We re-selected and then waited a surprisingly long time for relatively simple dishes. We had eventually ordered the Mac n Cheese, some of the tapas style items from the menu and some nachos. The Mac n Cheese was a disaster! Tiny portion in a massive bowl, overcooked pasta with a strange, gloopy almost orange coloured sauce. It was disgusting. Definitely microwaved, and possibly a packet sauce. It was served with totally raw garlic bread which was inedible. There were never any staff around so didn’t get to complain and send it back, just left it all. The nachos were equally disappointing. A tiny bowl of cheap tortillas with the equivalent of jarred salsa and soured cream. Really rubbish yet highly priced for a tiny portion to ‘share’! The tapas type dishes were also bad. In particular what was ordered as honey and mustard chipolatas, but what was sent was three giant cheap Cumberland style fat sausages. Not great for a picking and sharing dish! Overall the experience was really disappointing. We were excited to have the other pub in the village back open, but unfortunately we definitely will not be returning. So sad that the new owners don’t seem to have bothered with following through in the kitchen with what looked to be a good menu.

Meal for 10 we arrived at 6pm got our starters at 745 from the first one being sent out there was a 10-15min gap so we all didn't eat at the same time. As for the mains it was the same one of us had finished and one of us hadn't even had our meal. Ordered sauce for the steak that came when we had eaten the meal only after asking. They didn't even have enough sirloin, had to come out after we had ordered and say you will have to have rump. I don't mind waiting a while for food as it's a table of 10 but not as long as we did. The customer service was none existent The service was disgusting They even tried to overcharge when we had the bill. What a complete & utter shambles no apologies nothing. If you want a disaster avoid the place. It doesn't even deserve 1 star let alone 5

Just been the here for a meal tonight, l had Chicken Tika Curry because my first choice was not available, It was disgusting it was like water no taste just a lot of small square chicken pieces in a tasteless watery sauce,, I couldn’t eat it!! This place use to be so good,, We won’t be going again total waste of money!!

Ordered the Philly Cheesesteak Baguette. The steak was inedible as it was full of gristle. The staff were notified but nothing was done or offered to rectify the problem. My partner ordered the Chicken Tikka Curry - the chicken was diced into tiny chunks; it looked awful. Apart from the pub being empty, the atmosphere was pleasant.

Three of us called here for lunch, but unfortunately it was a bit of a disappointment. It’s a lovely, traditional pub and the staff are great, but they need to work on the food side of things. We ordered starters, which came out fine, but the main meals were our issue. One meal came first and it was warm at best, typical microwave stuff,we didn’t send back as we knew the other meals would come straight away, but we were wrong! 10 minutes later our second meal came out, but the meat was dry, so not impressed. Our third meal came 15 minutes later!!!, with the side order from the first meal!!! After overhearing other people send orders back, I think the new owners should have a real look at their chef. Nice place, but the food needs massive improvement.

Okay since my last review the place has changed hands Ant has left and his steaks were the best cannot comment on new owners yet. Not tried the food yet went in other day thou for a beer only had the 1 and it was flat quite dissapointing so went elsewhere in the village for a pint. Going to give it a 2* but will revisit and try the food see if get that mark up higher. Okay went for a meal 1 week ago end of November considering someone posted week before gave 5* got there bearing in mind advertised food too be told food will be on soon we took it seeing we arrived at 5.30pm it would be say 6pm no problems hmm no we were informed we dont have a chef/cook will be a couple of weeks until someone sorted what a joke and unsblr give a zero rating so went elsewhere in Barlaston had a cracking meal and decent drink

With this being local to ourselves we had to try the food on the night they launch their main menu, it did not disappoint, I had the steak and ale pie, my husband had the deli platter and my daughter had the mac & cheese, all dishes were enjoyed and plates polished off! We will be returning very soon.

First night of the main menu since the pub was taken over, I can honestly say we’ve thoroughly enjoyed it. I always try the steak and ale pie whenever we first go to a place and I am not disappointed. Cannot wait to come back and sample some more dishes!

The Duke of York is our local pub and recently reopened. We went with family and friends for sunday lunch and it was excellent. i had the chicken and gammon with all the trimmings. Reasonable price, food was excellent. The desert bread and butter pudding was good . Good luck to the new owners we will be returning

Visited for drinks from the canal. Good locals pub. Did not eat but looking at the menu it's one worth considering next time we are passing.

Had the mixed grill and the food was just average. It was so dry and poorly cooked. The portion sizes were massive though so you weren't left feeling hungry.

Superb food. It was a kind of retro experience which we all enjoyed. Feeling just a little faded inside though. But we enjoyed good service and a good night.

My Dad had the steak and ale pie (which he has tried in many pubs over the years) and he gave this one a 10 out of 10 (high praise indeed), my Mom had the mushroom starter (as a main) which she thoroughly enjoyed and my Partner and I had the steaks, cooked with sauces (Steak Dianne & Drunken Bullock), the steaks came with chips (hand cut - delicious), fresh minted peas, mushrooms & onion rings. The steak meals were outstanding! We shall definitely come back again! Dog friendly in the bar area and they also have a (non-dog) restaurant area. There's good parking and are set in a great location (right next to the Wedgwood Estate).

Always enjoy a trip to the Duke of York. Steaks that never let you down with incredible rustic chips to accompany. Highly recommended

We've been coming here for many years dating back to the previous landlord's tenure. The bar food has always been excellent and the main menu also really good if just a bit pricey . We called in for an impromptu early bar lunch yesterday (Saturday) to be told that the chef would not be available until 1pm. No problem - we nipped down the road and returned accordingly ordering drinks to go with our meals. When the menus arrived these were for the full blown restaurant and not the bar food we usually enjoy. Seems that the bar menu is no longer available and the main menu is all that's on offer and too pricey for us at that time of day . Whilst I appreciate the economics perhaps don't work any longer for The Duke to offer bar food it's a shame really as the smaller portions, hot sandwiches etc were ideal when we'd been for a walk over the Downs and will be sadly missed.

Had a beautiful meal here saturday food was amazing unfortunutly the staff wernt silly mistake bill was £18 and they took £81 i thought this would of be fixed asap but no it wasnt i rang and was promised it would be sorted ...so monday came and still no baNk transfer the staff were very apolagetic but no action was happening or ther shift s wer busy and other things came first which as a customer and one that made a couple of journey s to and from the place to ressolve was a waste of my time ... i think u need to work on your customer service thankyou

I have been trying to visit the pub for food for a while but only just managed to go today. I hadn't booked and it was an early Saturday evening but we managed to get a table. The bar staff are friendly and helpful, got our drinks then ordered. Myself I had a New York strip sirloin steak and my friend had steak and egg with a pot of peppercorn sauce. The waitress explained the sauce was spicy. When the food arrived it was nice to have it on warmed plates, the steaks were cooked how we wanted and my friend said "it was the best steak she's had!" Great home made chips and not greasy and they were plentiful, The food was excellent. Well full after the meal didn't have desserts. No room. The owner and chef Ant has been cooking this menu as a younger fella where he learned his trade many years ago in a pub I used a lot. Well done as it took me back to my visits to the Plough. If you in the area and a meat eater go and eat at the pub.

Family meal just after Xmas excellent food ,just one small problem they ran out of the lamb shanks but the steaks were very well cooked

Absolutely fabulous food. We went New year's eve day.the Fillet steak was gorgeous. With Drunken Bullock Sauce. My Hubby had the Ribeye steak with Onions and Stillon. Also Delicious. The Pudding was Apple Crumble. Also very nice. We would Definitely Recommend this pub.

We chose this pub as it’s a halfway point between our home and our daughter’s. We were seated in the bar area as we had our dog with us, and this suited us as we were able to watch the football at the same time as the World Cup was on at the time. Food was excellent, the portion size generous and the price was good too. Staff were friendly and attentive. There are good walks nearby too which was an added bonus. I’m so happy we found this pub as it’s an excellent mid wat meeting point for a Sunday roast and a walk. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.

Gutted took my American friend in and they weren't doing food that night. But he has been in since on his own, I've yet to eat there.

Visited the establishment with friends for what I thought good food and great evening. Oh how wrong I was it turned out to be the worst meal and the worst management I’ve ever experienced I didn’t get a replacement meal for a fillet steak that was cooked incorrectly and no effort was made to replace it they were quite happy for me to go hungry. Poor food and even worse management!!!

What a nice and relaxing place . The food i.e. steak was the best I've had for a long time , enjoyed it that much that I'll have to go back for another.. Well I said I'd go back and thus I have for Sunday Dinner and what a delicious beef dinner it was . The staff are soo helpful and do not rush you . All I can say is its even better & taster than before. If you do want a Sunday Dinner then please book to avoid disappointment .

Sunday lunch at The Duke of York, Barlaston was an amazing experience. The pub itself had so much beautiful character. The staff were attentive and more than pleasant. We booked a table for 4 and were seated immediately on arrival. The food we ordered was of excellent quality, fresh and cooked to perfection. I would highly recommend The Duke of York to anyone. Can't wait for another visit. 5*****

Had the most amazing Sunday Lunch. All cooked to perfection and served piping hot with very generous portion sizes. Staff were friendly and attentive at all times. Lovely comfortable pub with character and good range of beers. Very reasonable prices as well. Will certainly be returning.

We went here as a birthday treat for me , as it had been recommended, there’s a good selection of starters , the mains again great selection, I had the tornado Rossini and it was delicious, the filet steak was cooked to perfection, we didn’t have a dessert as we were all full , it’s nice to also find somewhere that does homemade chips , we will be back

We are very regular visitors to The Duke of York in Barlaston especially as we live in the village. Their food is superb!! We have never had any reason to complain and all through the pandemic they served fantastic takeaway meals to collect, supporting the local community as well as staying in business. Cannot understand why anyone should want to write such a poor review. Staff, service and ambience is always of a very high standard.

Just had a birthday meal there today for 10 people the service was quite good starters are awful main course was okay sweet was worse than the starters I had chicken goujons starter chicken was like rubber Dry as a bone just not really fit for consumption everyone else struggled with their starter too. The main course to be fair was edible and I quite enjoyed it then the sweet came I have a Baileys cheesecake which was absolutely disgusting it was like spray cream on top of a digestive biscuit it has made me ill. 4 out of 10 for the overall experience told them it was a secret party for my wife’s birthday no mention of it no fuss made disappointing really.

Very good value for money, will go again.

Whilst there was nothing that we would complain about, unfortunately on this visit it just lacked the spark and quality we have previously enjoyed here. On arrival (the restaurant was less than half full) we were greeted and sat at our table. Drinks order was taken and delivered quickly, but then a long wait to get our order taken. An apology came with it, as the one lady didn’t realise the other lady hadn’t taken our order. The staff are lovely, but there is clearly no management or organisation as there was no real logic to how they were working together. The service was quite poor, because they were just all over the place. The Sunday lunch was average. I appreciate the costs must have risen, and maybe they are trying to keep the menu prices the same. I’d have rather paid more to get a nicer meal. The beef was over cooked, chicken was ok and gammon quite fatty. Roast potatoes, usually lovely and fluffy, seemed like they had switched to frozen variety. Veg OK. Cauliflower cheese was the best part of the meal. Accidentally over charged us for another meal, but apologised and quickly removed it. We chose this place today as somewhere we would ‘go to’ for Sunday lunch. We will unfortunately now be considering other places. It’s a huge shame.

We booked a table for 3 at 12.15 but really it was quite quiet and we probably will just call in next time. It was very open and pleasant where we sat and the staff friendly and attentive. With it being lunch time there were two menus available. My wife opted for the 4oz steak on the lunchtime menu, I chose the same off the main menu and our grandson the New Yorker sandwich. All the meals were served up quite quickly and cooked perfectly. I must admit there was ample food on my wife's lunchtime menu steak and I would opt for that next time and probably put the extra cost onto a starter or dessert. Both the the starter and dessert menus had enough to tempt the taste buds as well. We'll definitely be going back again. Properly cooked very tasty food, great service and when went at lunch time parking at the rear was fine and you stepped straight into the dining area. Definitely a must go to eat out place.

Absolutely fantastic food. Best fillet steak I've ever eaten. Excellent service. I wish this was our local as its a perfect traditional British pub with top quality food. We where looked after very well. Highly recommend.

Amazing quality of food, we ordered 2 steaks and a Sunday dinner. No complaints at all. Meals were really good and well portioned. Staff were all super friendly as well. Lovely atmosphere they split the food and the drinks only areas so it wasn't too loud when having a meal. Overall will definitely come again in future
