Lovely Sunday lunch, had the beef which was so tender. The presentation was impressive and the service was excellent. Apple crumble was a lovely and the white chocolate cheesecake was to die for. Nice and cosy and dog friendly. You won’t be disappointed.

Under new management. Good selection of cold beers on draft. The food was delicious and served in a timely manner. My chicken parmigana was very soft and had a generous amount of chips and salad It's a lovely cosy pub with a friendly team, I will be back

Absolutely terrible. The limited menu printed on a scrap of paper was only the start. The serving staff tried to explain away their absolute incompetence as being due to a management transition. The mixed grill was barely edible. We asked for mustard and were offered one single ‘service station’ sachet to share between four of us - apologies they said but we are going through a management transition… The menu said salmon would be served with green vegetables but appeared with only carrots. Obviously they are colour blind as well as incompetent. The gammon said on the menu it would be served with fried eggs and pineapple. No pineapple arrived and when we questioned why we we told the menu was changing tomorrow so obviously there wouldn’t be any !!! As for the fried eggs, they looked like they were cooked by someone who had never seen a kitchen let alone a frying pan. Absolute disgrace ! This place used to be a good pub, so it’s really sad it has fallen into such poor management. We were offered 10% off the bill to compensate but you can get that by quoting Facebook to them. Insulting ! Avoid this pub at all costs.

We’ve had good experiences here in the past so chose it for a special occasion! Big mistake!!! Only 6 options (3 of which are burger) Felt sorry for serving team but God it was dire. I think they dropped my fried eggs on the floor and stamped on them a few times before putting it on top my gammon. I have had better meals in motorway service stations. I had read the reviews before but thought, ‘I’m sure it will be fine’ - it wasn’t!!! Shame

Not sure what’s gone wrong with this place as always had a decent meal. Went for family birthday (mentioned on the booking) but arrived and just told to choose a table. Sat down and no one came over. Eventually went to bar to get drinks. Draught beers always used to be good here (Rebellion Brewery) but nothing apart from generic lagers on draught? Eventually got the very limited menu. Basically salmon or burgers. No pizzas , chicken or any variety. When food arrived the calamari just had a wedge of lemon, no tartare sauce or mayonnaise. Was as dry as old boots and £10!! 4 had burgers which just with dry chips. No salad or sides. Burgers dry and limited salad too. Mixed grill was a large gammon steak which was ok, but then 4 overcooked sausages and mushrooms and over cooked steak (asked for medium rare). We didn’t bother with desserts and just paid and left. Staff seemed to be doing their best but didn’t real seem too bothered and certainly no one of any authority to actually run the place. We heard someone mention the menu was changing but needs a good overhaul otherwise it will just be another place closing when we desperately need decent pubs with food in the area. Hopefully they turn it around.

Very disappointed as first visit to pub for a works lunch. Menu very small and looked rushed. Three items on what was a very small menu not available. Most of us had burgers as not much else to choose from!! Came out with chips, no salad and awful presentation for £18 joke. Toppings on burger were tasteless not even a onion!!! Bland Also menu not marked up correctly for gluten free and had no gf rolls (sainsburys 1 minute drive away) so had a greasy burger on plate, I also stated no tomatoes and it came out with tomatoes but i got bit of salad probably because it looks so sad especiallyfor £18!!! We are a company only 1 minute drive away it's a shame as could of been a regular visitor. Desert was not offered but we probably would of declined as going by mains it would of been a disappointment.

This place used to be so good and attentive. Last couple of times you order and it’s like everyone stands around and doesn’t want to serve you, so awkward standing there people walk off and you don’t even know if you are getting your order. We ordered a children’s pizza which was good and the crudities looked dry and old. The cucumber was missing so I asked for it and after 20 minutes nothing arrived so I went and asked for it, the guy shrugged his shoulders and walked off so I asked again is there no cucumber and he said no. Low and behold my friend ordered Pimms with a tonne of it in there. I said so you have cucumber and the lady said yes. We had to send back the salad and nachos twice it was like a child made it even the server said it was bad. We asked for Aperol and were told it was out of stock. Fine, until one of the staff members said to the next ‘we do have one though the ones that’s for us’. Which clearly they were not meant to say. Got told there was chocolate ice cream and there wasn’t. It was a comedy show. I don’t know who the owners are but they are being taken for a fool with the people working there. I did speak to the lady in charge and expressed how bad it al was and kitchen staff were not happy about my complaint and could be overheard loudly moaning - guys the doors are open and people walk past. Painful experience.

Terribly disappointing. This used to be a safe place for a good meal but not now. Booked a table for 7 in advance. The table was sticky, cutlery wasn't very clean. We were with guests on their first visit to the UK. The food was bland. A Tuna Nicoise Salad was ordered and was missing the egg. 2 Steak, aubergine & feta salads were ordered, consisting of lettuce, dry steak, aubergine and feta - very bland tasting and the steak was chewy and flavourless. Finally, we ordered some panna cottas for dessert. Whatever was bought to the table was tastesless, had split and was curdling. The waitress presented to bill without asking if everything was ok with our order. We pointed out the dessert wasn't good and the price of the desert was removed from the bill. Deeply disappointing and we will not be returning. It was an embarrassment to bring our foreign colleagues to this place. The restaurant wasn't even busy, from where we were we were the only people eating. One of our colleague was even sick after leaving the pub.

I’d not been to the WA for years, when it used to be excellent. We arrived with a pre-booked reservation but it took staff far too long to acknowledge our arrival whilst they chatted, and even then it was not the welcome we would have expected. Ignoring the fact that we had to ask to change table because we were squeezed in a corner, we ordered our food … My prawn starter was ok at best, my friend’s squid was dry, unappealing to look at and pretty tasteless. It was my main that finished it for us; chicken and mushroom tagliatelle (with some peas thrown in for good measure) “served with a sumptuous white sauce”. The whole dish was totally unseasoned, the chicken bland and the sauce thin and watery. Adding salt and pepper was not enough so I asked for some Parmesan but it was still inedible. I left most of it, explained why to the waitress who cleared our table whose attitude was simply “oh, ok”. Service was poor, atmosphere noisy and overall experience a dreadful waste of money. It may have been several years since I’d been, but I won’t be trying again.

Abysmal service, never had worse and won’t be back. Got put on a table and ignored for more than 20 minutes, my friend had to go ask to be served. Took over an hour to get our main course. Drinks when they came weren’t right. Staff seemed to be constantly wandering around with food and no idea what table they were serving. My main came and had no beans in the “bean cassoulet”. Gave up on the idea of dessert. Bill came and staff had to be told twice that it wasn’t correct to audible huffs from the server that they had to go away and change it. Never again!!

He took ages to sort out taking the book - didnt have any paper, then didnt have a pen, Took many minutes only to find out this evening that we had no booking at couldnt fit us in. The manager wasnt having any of it being his staff fault. He took much offence at me calling this guy useless. Clearly new manager isnt very customer friendly. no idea if food is any good as we didnt get in. just left with a sour taste from both the manager and his useless staff. #avoid.

We had such a lovely evening at this place!! We went prepared with rugs and coats but the undercover courtyard and heaters were more than enough to keep warm! The menu was a temporary one due to the outside eating restrictions but pizzas were delicious and I had a gorgeous crab salad! A special mention to Laura who looked after us when we arrived, who was lovely!! And then to Tom who had to put up with our banter as the drinks were flowing, he was super!!! We loved the fact that the manager came and chatted with us and really cared about us all having a good time! We are looking forward to sampling the full menu once it is available but in the meantime, we will be back again very soon for another great evening!!

I visited the Walters Arms for dinner on Friday 18th (the last day of being in tier 2 in this area). I'd booked an outside table with heaters for 4 people for my friends and I as I'd seen their Facebook advertisement claiming wonderful outside seating with heating available (photo attached). When we first arrived we were taken to our table - the tables and chairs were soaking wet but the waitress was too quick to walk away for us to ask for something to wipe the water off so we sat on our coats. The waitress who was looking after us that evening came over shortly after and offered to wipe the table down when she noticed how wet it was but we'd all already got our coats soaking. We asked for the heater we were sat next to to be turned on (as I'd booked a table with heaters and also we were sat on our coats) but were told the heater was too wet to turn on. There were 3 tables available with heathers that were on and were empty the whole time we were sat at the Walters Arms but not once were we offered one of these tables (even though I booked a table with heaters). The table next to us complained to the waitress saying they were cold and were quickly moved to one of the available tables with heaters which were on despite not booking a table with heaters (which was made clear to the waitress). This was very disappointing. The food and drinks however were exceptional - but we were disappointed with the service we received. In addition to this, when clearing the plates from our dinner, we asked for a second round of drinks but was told we were not allowed to order any more drinks (alcoholic) unless there was still food on the table. This rule doesn't comply with any government guidelines so we were left very confused, if this is the Walters Arms rules then these should have been outlined when I made the booking or when we arrived. Besides, we were never checked on and offered more drinks when we were eating our main course. I think considering the current circumstances most places are doing all they can to make customers feel comfortable but we were left very disappointed with this service.

We chose the Walters arms as they advertised outside covered area with heating. We booked online and the booking confirmed. We arrived and we were given a table for 6 under a canvas brolly with no heat in the beer garden. Thus was not as described on their website. We had an elderly couple with us and no effort was made to improve the situation when I complained. Only flippant remarks from the landlord. Food was good as was service, but don't go without speaking to them and reserve a table under the heaters.

I was looking for somewhere to do work away from my home office in order to minimise distractions when my wife recommended the Walter Arms. I'm currently sat near their fire with calm music in the background and my third coffee. Including a sandwich for lunch it's a bargain for £10.Given the current circumstances (y'know, that pesky pandemic) I couldn't feel safer. Everyone is spaced apart nicely and able to move freely without getting too close to each other. Friendly staff too!A wonderful idea, well executed and lovely to be able to support a local business in these trying times. I'll definitely be back.

Having finished off another chocolate brownie after several visits during the Government eat out scheme, I'm reading through here and genuinely surprised at some of the reviews being left. Living a short walk down the lane, I've seen this pub change hands more times than I care to remember including the fish called Walter days... It feels that in John they finally have a manager who does care. He understands it's not going to be perfect everytime, but most importantly he wants it to be that way. The first two times we came in we sat out in the large beer Garden and were served by Max who couldn't do enough to help and was a real credit to the team. With my wife being heavily pregnant we decided that we would come Mon - Weds for the remaining weeks. Each time we were served promptly and our food always arrived efficiently. Our two daughters were with us and they especially loved the amount of halloumi on offer. The menu was slightly more limited than previous experience, however given how busy they were because of the scheme it was perfectly understandable and we know it is going to be expanded as things settle down.On most occasions we were sat between the courtyard and the Barn and struck up conversation with Laura and Clarissa every time who were always accommodating.I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with the Courtyard for the autumn/winter months and if the barn remains open as the one thing I've always found over the years is the bar space in the pub limited. It would be great to know we can wonder up more frequently for a drink and there will be space to sit.All in all we look forward to returning with our new baby for everyone to meet, once she arrives in the immediate few days. Well done everyone for all your hard work in getting this place going again.

We have eaten and had drinks at the Walters at least 7 or 8 times over the last couple months since coming out of full lockdown. Compared to everywhere else in the area the Walters is far the best. Fabulous staff, great food, super atmosphere and a real feeling of safety. Yes some nights it’s been busy and we went on a night when it was cold and wet, but let’s not blame the weather on the staff. For those at criticise suggest you go and find somewhere better, good luck on that as you won’t. For those who haven’t tried the Walters your love it.

Booked last week for last night. When we arrived we were seated at an outside table which I did not request. It was cold and we had t shirts on. When you book a table in a restaurant you expect to be inside. Very helpful staff member seated us inside. However, it was in the barn area and the double patio doors were wide open so we may as well have been outside (I understand keeping fresh air flowing at the moment, but this was not necessary). It was very cold. We got two of our starters which were ok and had to ask for the third. Over an hour after we had sat down we asked about our mains. The manager said that he had pushed our order to the front of the queue, it had obviously been overlooked. When the mains arrived it was obvious it had been rushed out, pale fries, pale pizza and husband’s piece of fish was nearly all batter. We got home very cold and not feeling like we’d had a pleasant family evening out. The staff were lovely and the manager took the cost of some drinks off the bill for the wait which was appreciated. However, they really need to take a few less bookings if they can’t deliver a good service. I’ve eaten here many times in the past with no problems but I won’t be rushing back

Made a booking on 16/08 for 25/08 for2 people at 7:30pm. Booking confirmed on 17/08.Arrived on time and was shown to a table directly in front of open doors. It was a very wet, windy and cold evening. The waitress (whoI assumed was some sort of manager) stated before we even sat down. ‘These are your seats but I’ll see if I can seat you elsewhere’. I could see why.. We sat down and ordered drinks and soon decided it was just too cold to accept the table. Table was clearly an after thought. There was no QR code on the table (all others had them). It was was literally in the hallway. (Pictures attached).A waitress approached soon after for our food order. I explained that we would not want to eat here and would prefer a table that was set out for diners and not explorers... Appeared a male waiter (manager??!) His suggestion was we could turn our chairs away from the wind of the doors or eat outside under the umbrella so we wouldn’t get wet. I’m not sure if this was his attempt at having a sense of humour but wasn’t really acceptable. We were then told a couple in the corner were finishing their mains so we could have their place once they had finished. Still a bit miffed we were not placed in a actual table we agreed.I then saw said couple place their cutlery on plates and no sooner they were pounced on by waitress asking if they would swap seats with us as we were ‘unhappy’ with where we were sat?????Disgusted and not wanting to ruin two couples evenings I intervened. The young couple were very nice and would have accepted but not the point. They shouldn’t have had to. I get with the current Government scheme places are busy. I however booked well in advance. We were sat in a totally unacceptable place and were provided despicable customer service. Avoid at all costs. Please contact me management to discuss as I couldn’t find you following the incident. I guess you were busy elsewhere.

Very friendly staff, but the food was really disappointing. They are clearly very busy as a result of the government discount scheme, but quality seems to be suffering as a result. The prawn starter was no more than defrosted supermarket prawns with no dressing and 2 and a half slices of avocado. Main course menu is uninspiring and the quality was just about OK - but compared to what the restaurant here used to be like, it is not worth going out of your way to eat here at the moment - even with a £10 discount.

Booked online a week ago for a 7:45 table on Wednesday. Arrived at 7:10, the pub was really busy inside and out, and we were seated within a few minutes. Good start! Once at the table, they had QR codes at the table to get menus on your phones and avoid touching paper menus. Great. This is where things started to go wrong - it took half an hour to place an order, twenty for our drinks to arrive, another half an hour for our starters and then we gave up waiting after another hour for our mains. At the point at which we left we were one of only a few tables sat inside - other diners appeared to be eating happily outside when we left, but the team just seemed overwhelmed by demand and, I suspect, started to run out of food (our starters were missing elements, including salad dressing, and short on others - a very small portion of avocado with the prawn and avocado salad). On one hand i’m really happy they were so busy, on another a bit disappointed that we went out to help out, but didn’t manage to eat a full meal. We were comp’d our drinks and thank the team for that - and they apologised that COVID restrictions meant that the two staff allowed in the kitchen couldn’t keep up. I think they just missed out on the communication aspect of service - if they’d told us about the wait at the beginning - we’d have been more willing to wait it out.I would like to go back outside of the government scheme because the menu looked nice and the restaurant had a nice vibe when it was busier. But I’d be inclined to give it a miss through august while they sort their booking issues. We could just have been very unlucky, but the other tables in our section of the restaurant were also kept waiting similar times and sent food back.I wish them luck with the rest of August and hope that taking less bookings overcomes the problems they have with staff restrictions in the kitchen.

Superb Sunny Sunday LunchWe had a fantastic lunch at The Walter Arms. The first family lunch out since lockdown. We booked on the day and we were late after camping but they managed to still accommodate us, even as the kitchen was closing. We sat outside as was in two family bubbles but they sat our two tables next to each other in the court yard. A beautiful setting. The roast beef with all the trimming was delicious and my partner enjoyed fish & chips. The waiter Laura was lovely and very professional and made a fuss of my four year old. Would go back if in the area. Excellent service and food. Thanks.

Had a very pleasant late afternoon lunch. Have visited this establishment before but never been that impressed by the food or staff, but this new management and new team have certainly made a difference. We had a very warm and friendly welcome and the food was lovely. A big thank you to Micheal and Laura a huge asset to the company.

My partner and I came here for a Sunday lunch and the team had really hyped up the roast dinner beforehand to him. He went for the beef roast with cauliflower cheese and was left very disappointed! The Camembert was overcooked and the cheese on the bottom was extremely watery. The beef was tough and chewy, luckily my boyfriend has his chop saw in his van to lend some help with it! My chicken burger meal was not great at all either. The burger bun was burnt and my chips were cold. We are in no rush to return!

This was our first time venturing out after lockdown so we were a little nervous, but had a lovely time! Delicious lunch in the sunshine in the courtyard, and felt very safe with all the measures now in place. Easy to access the menu using the new QR codes on the table, and easy to pay contactless at the end. I had the fish and chips and my partner had the halloumi and both were very tasty. I also enjoyed the pimms! Big thanks to our waiter Michael who was great and really put us at ease. We’ll be back very soon!

Myself and my wife came down from up north to visit for lunch with my daughter and son in law and felt throughly looked after. Tom welcomed us to the pub fantastically to take us to our table where Harrison and Max looked after us. Service was efficient and food was spot on. Huge compliments to Chef Sam and the team. The building was clean and the whole family felt safe. We will be back!

Came here the week after lockdown ended and sat outside in the courtyard. They had QR codes for the menus which you just point your phone at and read on your handset from their website. Took a while to get served after we sat but there were only three members of staff serving food to a full restaurant and the rest of the service after we had our drinks was fantastic. Tom was a great guy who sorted everything and once the drinks finally arrived like I say the rest of the team were great and given the new set up/ social distancing etc they really worked their socks off. I think the other two working that night names were Taylor & Harrison. The food we ordered was fantastic - kids size portion fish and chips and pepperoni pizza. They don’t have kids menus but happy to do half size portions and the quality for kids food was excellent. The fish was moist and batter crispy. Very good. My wife had the seabass which was also wonderfully presented and cooked. I ordered the peri peri chicken chicken which was cooked perfectly and had a kick. The profiterole dessert was really lovely and the chocolate brownie dessert very good too. The french rose they sell is excellent although we were not too impressed with the white wine we ordered and sent that back. Overall a great evening out and very impressed with the measures in place re hygiene and social distancing. Look forward to coming back.

I was down on a visit from the Far North and visited this lovely pub on my own at first, then with my daughter and partner twice during my stay. It’s what I expected from a Home Counties pub in an affluent area, not what I’m used to in Northumberland. What I didn’t expect was the unbelievable level of service and friendly attitude of the magnificent team the manager has built and trained for the challenges of lockdown exit. The beers wouldn’t have been my first choice, but it was worth accepting what they had for the joy of being served by such a superb staff team, led by an obviously driven manager and who’s staff took time to talk to the customers. I’ve never had such a great welcome in such a pub in the south of England, if anywhere in the country. Good job, and well done!

After a relatively stressful day at work, my friend and i took the decision to pay the Walters Arms establishment a visit for a gentle unwind with a couple of refreshing beverages. As i arrived i was greeted by Laura who kindly directed myself to an available table. Laura was most welcoming and friendly and we soon established a genuine rapport. As the evening progressed, a couple of drinks unexpectedly developed into an abundance as we soaked up the evening sun, the gaiety atmosphere of the courtyard and merriment conversation. I would like to thank Laura for her attentivness during our stay. She represents a fine role model of the waitress community!

Good food and despite being near the road it's very peaceful outside. The outstanding thing is the service. We took our mum who is mid-cancer treatment out for a treat - we've been looked after this afternoon by a young lady called Laura and her care and attention she's displayed to looking after a vulnerable person is exceptional. On top of that she's extremely personable and has a great sense of humour. She's a star and an asset to what is generally a very good pub

Popped in tentatively for an afternoon pint during a dog walk, as we have done many times before pre-lockdown. With plenty of outside tables, and available seating we were given a table in the charming courtyard. Smartphone needed to scan QR Codes for registering your visit and for pub menus. Paper menu was offered. The Walters has always been a favourite of ours, dog friendly, people friendly, great food and beer and great service. But what made me feel so glad that we dared to take our first post-lockdown visit was how the Walters team have naturally adapted to the ‘new normal’ measures and made us feel safe, comfortable, and welcome.A quick dog walk pint turned into a pint and a snack from their starter menu. Those who know the Walters Arms do not need reminding of the great food, good beer, and quality service – but if you are worried about returning, please reconsider. As with all businesses reopening post-lockdown, the Walters has had to adapt, but they have done so in a way that feels normal, not awkward.I need to call out Laura who looked after us (and our cockapoo!) and explained all that the Walters team were doing to keep visitors and themselves as safe as possible. And the measures that they will willingly take for those who are Covid-19 vulnerable and may need or request service by someone wearing PPE.Laura and the other Walters team that we met today were so attentive and welcoming, I am so glad that we dared to revisit and we will most definitely be back soon with our family ‘bubble’!

I had booked the Walter Arms for a big birthday party, 40 guests in the barn area. From the point of booking the staff could not have been more helpful. Customising the menu and catering for any dietary restrictions was no problem at all.The barn itself looked beautiful with a lit open fire place. Putting up balloons and hiding the birthday cake all completed earlier in the day with help from the team! The service was incredibly attentive with a dedicated bar team and Claudio and Neil overseeing everything ran smoothly which it did (getting everyone’s dinners out at the same time is no mean feat when there are 40 of you but they managed!).The food - wow! I had the seabass which was perfectly cooked, crispy skin and delicate flesh. Absolutely some of the best group catering I have ever experienced. Thank you everybody at the WA for making my husband’s day such a memorable one.

Menu lacking for vegetarians, visited on a Sunday for an early dinner... 3 vegetarian options... pizza or burger or vegetarian wellington .... which they did not have.... asked what the chef could rustle up .... a plate of vegetables £13.50 it would take some doing for that to be value for money.... asked if the chef could muster a cheese sauce for them ... chef couldn’t...so decided to have a cheese board.... nicely presented chutney, selection of crackers, garnish with dressing, celery, but the main ingredient- cheese was lacking sadly two wedges of cheddar and a small piece of Brie asked again if the chef had any blue cheese... you’ve got it sadly not..... to sum up clearly not a chef just a food warmer that can’t improvise... a restaurant with no blue cheese and a limited vegetarian menu!!!

Recently went in just for a drink, having used this pub/restaurant extensively in the past. We were charged £6.60 for a pint of ordinary beer and a half pint of soda water. Given that a pint of beer should cost no more than £4, let's say they charged an extortionate £4.40, that makes a half pint of soda water (without ice) £2.20!! A word to the management - most bars provide soda water free of charge. Still, if your customers are willing to pay for it, why wouldn't you rip them off as much as possible? #laughingallthewaytothebank

Having booked a table for a birthday celebration and made the pub/restaurant aware, even met the manager, our party was very disappointed with our visit. Service started out well but declined during meal, we had to ask for table to be cleared of empty glasses and plates, food overpriced for quantity/quality provided, desserts inedible although they were deducted from the bill, and although early evening, some specials were not available, we were only told when trying to order from that menu so needed to choose again. Seated in an area very close to a large group and noise was an issue. We live locally, knew it had new management so thought it was worth a try as it had declined under previous team, however sadly we will not be returning nor will we recommend to others.

This was my fourth time visiting a Gails bakery. The previous 3 times I had reservations about the bakery but put it down to short staff or a busy period. Today however I have come to the conclusion that Gails is highly overrated. The staff are pretty rude aside from the mediocre and bland food on offer which is overpriced as well. We had the scones and a spinach and feta pastry. The scones were dry, ice cold and flavourless, the spinach and feta pie was bland and greasy. Improvement in flavour, presentation and most importantly taste needs a major overhaul. Happy to pay high prices for high quality products. I will give this place a miss whilst it gets to improving its standards and quality. There are countless of great coffee shops opening up so why not keep up the pace. .
