The Walnut Tree Inn in Wiltshire

We stopped here by chance on route to somewhere else. Although the dining area was packed we were offered a table in a new conservatory area in the bar and we were glad to be there. We had a warm welcome and our drinks order was taken. Food was ordered a little while later and arrived quickly despite the kitchen being extremely busy with Christmas dinner orders. The food was excellent well cooked and presented and good portions. A very enjoyable lunch.

A bit disappointing. Chicken was very tough, so took it for my dog! Service very slow and not very attentive, despite phoning in orders in advance for our larger group.

My wife and I had the carvery which we wouldn't normally have however it was really very good, everything was fresh, hot and well cooked. The vegetables weren't over cooked and the place was very busy,our teen daughters had fish and chips which were standard but also well cooked. It would of been excellent but we took our dog and so had to sit in a lean-to out the back on cheap garden furniture and views of the car park. I will go back and would recommend.

We needed somewhere to eat en route to Glastonbury and this place popped up in our search. Looks like a standard family pub but the food exceeded our expectations. Whitebait starter was crispy and tasty. Pork belly main was delicious with generous portions. Finished with white chocolate cheesecake which was great. Just what we needed to fill our tummies for the rest of our journey. You won’t be disappointed if you stop here for a good meal. Would highly recommend.

Not a good experience. Did not book and should have seen they were simple too busy to accommodate us. It's was chaos carvery at its best. Ordered two teas , burger and chips and nachos. Seems straightforward. Both the soya and oak milk was off ..so no tea. Nachos had been under the hot plate too long so the cheese had conjealed..no guacamole, poor salsa. Burger was ok. Served various parts by 5 different people, forgot my milk, forgot my tea , didn't bring the bill. Sometimes it's just best to say No we are too busy!

Dropped into the Walnut Tree on the off chance. We didn't know the area or the pubs. I must say, we were not disappointed. The pub has character and is very family orientated. We found the staff extremely friendly and more than helpful and I hasten to add, most efficient. The food was the bonus. plentiful and extremely tasty! A good range on the menu and a desirable choice at the bar. Overall, it's a thumbs up from me. If you are passing through Mere, then check the Walnut out.

Good reliable place to eat especially if you're really hungry and not after gastro style cuisine. Hearty, British food keeping it safe - steak, fish and chips, but also with a distinctive retro feel - Chicken Diane, Banana splits, cheesecake etc. It's definitely popular with the locals but slightly lacks atmostphere. No cosy candles on the tables or nice lighting and it's a big space. The waiting staff are young and lack any knowledge about the menu. A description on the dessert menu was actually incorrect - raspberry and white chocolate cheeseake for example was delicious but was in fact a syrupy concotion of winter berries on a vanilla cheesecake. I didn't mind because it was so good but why it wasn't described as such I don't know. Some better training on the staff and a few tweaks and this place could be a much better version of what it is now.

Food was OK, but the front of house service was poor. Greeted with a cold welcome and seated, waited several minutes for a server to visit to ask if we wanted any drinks…….we first had to ask then for a drinks menu, no apology & server returned with a single sheet. We waited more minutes for her return to make our order……we then asked for food menus. Again no apology and same return with a single sheet menu between 3 of us to share; and walked away. A further server, now our third, did notice and brought over 2 more menus so we had 1 each. 20 minutes in and we were now able to order, first we asked what was ‘the veg’ as labelled on the menu being served with the majority of the dishes……answered something orange and green, maybe carrots and green beans; a little disappointing reply. Now on our fourth server, not asked if we had any allergies when taking our order. Fast forward 70 more minutes our food has finally arrived, no notice of any delay from any of the servers, but not worth the wait I’m afraid as the dauphinoise potatoes were completely dry and tasteless, the carrots were very hard and the curry was just bland. No check backs to our table to ask how our meals were, so probably for the better. Now about 2 hours in and we decided against ordering any dessert to save our time, nor part with any more money, we brought a very nice trifle at the local co-op on the way home instead. It was noticeable from the tables around us others were having to ask for menus, similar unfriendly service experience and long waiting times. The pub itself was a lovely venue inside with a nice outside seating area, our food was just OK but the poor service, lack of a warm welcome, customer service, basic hospitality training and menu knowledge was disappointing.

Came in on Tuesday evening, lovely lady came straight over asked us how many people and showed us to our seats straight away and gave us menus, plenty of choice on the menu both starter and main meals were excellent and filling so much that I couldn’t manage dessert. The staff are Amazing and very polite, lovely pub and we’ve been told the Sunday carvery is Brilliant so will be booking in for that soon.

We stopped for lunch on route to our Devon holiday! We throughly enjoyed our visit. The sun was shining the seating area outside was lovely. The food was great and the staff very polite and welcoming! Would definitely go back!

What a genuine pleasure to have lunch at this wonderful pub/restaurant in the beautiful village of Mere. Service was great and food was excellent.👍

Delicious food, good portions, the staff were very friendly and efficient. Mixture of olde worlde and modern the pub is light and airy and beautifully furnished. Went whilst on holiday with my husband and our friends and we all really enjoyed our meals. The desserts were nice too. Top marks to the gardener too! The flowers were beautiful.

We came here for a family meal for one of my granddaughters 21st birthday. It was the 1st time that I had ever been here and it was fabulous. I went for the Carvery option, I choose the Roast Beef and it was delicious, just a bit pink and very tender, the roast potatoes were lovely and crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, loads of fresh vegetables and to top it off a huge Yorkshire pudding plus the gravy was very tasty. Sadly I forgot to take a picture as I was too keen to get stuck in 😃 . I went all out and also had a pudding , fruit crumble and ice cream, I’m not sure how I fitted it all in but I sum how managed it. The young lady that served us was very polite and had a lovely smile 😊. I would definitely revisit here at some point .

Convenient location close to Stourhead. We called at around 8pm as we were travelling and were able to get a table just before the kitchen closed. The menu wasn’t huge but there were lots of tasty sounding options including 2 or 3 vegetarian options. The food was really good and the portions were very generous which made the prices quite reasonable.

Had a family meal at the Walnut Inn in Mere just a stones throw from the A 303 the food was good so was the service would visit again

First class Sunday Roast … being a coeliac nothing was too much trouble to prepare gluten free… first class service and staff exceptionally friendly and welcoming… certainly recommend this venue

The Walnut Tree was prepared for Xmas parties and looked both festive and welcoming though perhaps more in the style of a restaurant rather than a pub, with a huge sign just inside the door instructing visitors to wait to be seated. The food presentation was excellent and the staff pleasant, but the food itself was sadly very badly cooked. In particular the Chicken Diane was very disappointing. The chicken was tough and the sauté potatoes soft on the outside but hard within. The sauce was very low on flavour and somewhat thin in texture. My wife went for the Breaded Whole tail Scampi which she was unable to finish. The tiny prawns or shrimps were almost tasteless under the hard breaded exterior and the accompanying chips were hard. Normally, we would have mentioned our disappointment but the staff were clearly extremely busy with a sudden influx of booked groups.,

We booked the Festive Feast lunch for our family of seven. We were given our favourite round table which was decorated beautifully with green and Red Napkins, Christmas Crackers and right beside a beautiful Christmas tree. The meal was delicious and enjoyed by all; amazing Menu which also catered for all our dietary needs. A feed back from the family was 'The meal was wonderful and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, thank you'. The Inn was warm and comfortable and had an wonderful homely/friendly atmosphere. Good Table in newish glass extension in sunshine, my wife had Lasagne & chips, very good & I had slow cooked braised beef on cream potatoes & fresh vegetables washed down with a pint of Gem beer, excellent size portions ( you do not go hungry here ), presentation was very good. we will be back

Lovely clean and comfortable accommodation, fantastic pub with great food and friendly service, what more could you ask for! We really enjoyed our 3 night stay here, the owners Mark & Sam along with all other staff made us feel really welcome. The room was clean, modern and comfortable, the cook to order breakfast was great, the Sunday carvery and evening meals were marvellous and the location was perfect for exploring Wiltshire, Somerset and Dorset. Excellent value for money all round and hope to return again on our next visit to this part of beautiful Wiltshire. Thanks guys, keep up the great work!!

On a sunny Sunday afternoon, we took a leisurely half hour drive down to Mere so we could visit this pub. It is an absolute gem of a place with great ambience, friendly staff & exceptional food. Can't remember what we had but I do know we commented on how much we liked the place. We would not hesitate to visit this place again.

We turned up without a booking and they found space for 9 of us, and warned us it might be a wait but they’d do their very best. Drinks were served really quickly, food was also in good time. Service was absolutely impeccable, lots of smiling and helpful staff. A really enjoyable afternoon, delicious food and great staff

What a delightful discovery. We stayed overnight on our journey to the West Country. Our bedroom was very comfortable and had everything you needed, including a coffee making machine. The bathroom had both a large bath and a walk in shower. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Taking the time to have a chat with us. Dinner was really good, there was a good selection on the menu. Again, even though it was busy, the staff were friendly and attentive. Would definitely stay again on our way West, the Inn is not far from the A303. Also less than a ten minute drive to the National Trust Stourhead House and Gardens.

Staying nearby in Chicklade and this place was recommended. So glad it was as it didnt dissapoint. A warm friendly welcome awaited us even tho it was busy and quite late. Our drinks were brought promptly. We had to wait awhile for our food but we didnt mind as it was such a lovely atmosphere. We had mains and desserts, both yummy and well presented. Had no qualms booking for the following evening which just happened to be the Sunday Carvery which was excellent. Would highly recommend a visit if you are in the area.

Unfortunately we did not have a very good experience at the walnut tree in mere, Firstly we ordered drinks which never arrived, secondly we ordered food which arrived pretty promptly I have to say, but with hair in the main course, which I can assure wasn’t mine, as I’m bold! and my partner isn’t a red head! I informed the floor manager, and he responded immediately. My problem is that, we didn’t make a issue of hair in our food, and spoke to the manager very discretely in the corner not to give concern to other guest whilst eating. At time of payment, we wasn’t given the option of any gesture or small discount and was expected to pay the full amount. Very disappointing. I guess we were the unlucky ones, keep your eyes open! Wouldn’t go again unfortunately

Lovely place plenty of character in a small village, parking can be a challenge, particularly if busy, food good we had the Sunday roast but will return to eat of the ala carte menu.

A great hotel and restaurant with welcoming, friendly and fantastic staff with excellent service. The restaurant had a great and varied menu which tasted superb and catered for our gluten free requirements without any problems. The rooms were very comfortable, had everything that you could need and were lovely and clean. Ian and Marc were fantastique hosts and we would highly recommend a visit.

Our second stay at the Walnut Tree and even better than last time. Our room - Sycamore - was so well equipped. Best of all we both had a comfortable chair to relax in.The roast beef on the Sunday carvery was the best I have ever eaten together with enormous Yorkshires and wide choice of veg. Excellent breakfast rounded off our too short a stay.

One word! Amazing! Excellent food, fantastic service, great atmosphere, staff so friendly, very clean environment. Can’t recommend highly enough!
