It was going through a revamp so I wasn't able to see it in its full glory and taste any food but the pub is much to my liking. I am going to be visiting again as my best friend lives in the village and we may watch a few sport matches which it has on show with the large screens. A nice little looking pub with the usually salts of the earth having a few jars. Pubs are a main stay of UK culture and often its where men are able to meet and catchup and solve the worlds problems and their own. This is one of them and is an essential for the villages community. I hope it remains open in these tough times.

I will admit to a little bias as this is my local but the Volunteer Inn is as good as it's possible to be in the current environment. Good, well kept ales, very good Guinness and a selection of ciders but it is the food that deserves special mention. The pub built up a good reputation during lock down through its takeaway menu and this has been enhanced since reopening. Fish and chips, steaks and Sunday roasts are all freshly prepared but it is the pies, that perhaps take pride of place. Homemade proper pies (not a bit of stew with a bit of pastry on top). The steak and kidney, beef and ale and a variety of chicken pies are all highly recommended.

The food, ale, and the hosts are fabulous. All local pubs at this moment in time need our support and I think we all need a break from home and telly. Social distancing in the lounge/ restaurant feels really safe, so go and have a couple of drinks and a meal and I guarantee you will feel better and you will help support a great Devon local pub.

We had a most enjoyable experience at this Inn. The food was excellent as was the wine and beer. The staff were charming, attentive and provided an excellent service with a smile. very reasonably priced. While the menu for main courses was varied and with something likely to please all tastes the desert menu was a little disappointing. There was a lack of seasonal desert, July and no strawberry, or other summer fruit flan, meringue, fruit salad or summer pudding. What they did have was very nice but rather small and what would be ideal in the winter.

Under new ownership recently so went with a group to check out the food and atmosphere. For a local with limited parking outside it did well for the food and feel of the place. Cosy and quiet with food offers depending on the chef's daily special. We felt welcome and nothing was too much trouble. The fish dish was tasty and well priced. I have been assured that the hunters chicken with salad was excellent. The menu wasn't long but balanced and should cater for most 'pub grub' tastes. Limited puddings were definitely homemade and not over priced. No good for wheel chair access as there are steps up into the premises and to the toilets. Other than that it was clean, friendly and worth another visit. Bar with games one side, restaurant tables and quiet drinking on the other.

The pub does need some refurbishment, but don’t let that put you off. The cider was great and the food even better. Three of us had the Volly burger, ham and eggs and fish and chips. All perfect. We pop in quite often for drinks but this is the first time we decided to have some food. My goodness! My other half had the Volunteer Burger and myself the Chicken and Leek Pie (I very nearly had the Desperate Dan pie which sounds delightful). My pie was full to the brim with so much shredded chicken (not cubes!) and leek I was astounded. It was absolutely stunning. The better half’s burger however, was the star of the show. Home made REAL beef and big enough for him to think he wouldn’t eat it all (obviously I had a nibble!!). He managed to eat every single bite. This burger surpassed every burger he (and myself) had ever tried. I kid you not, even writing this, my mouth is watering.

I loved this pub. We walked from Salcombe and it was well worth it (don't worry, you can drive there too). It had the feel of a genuine pub with some good beers that happened to do great food also. I had possibly the best burger I have had in a long time and my wife had a fantastic steak sandwich. Both were freshly prepared scratch. They have vegan options too. I notice some negative reviews, mostly due to poor service. We arrived at 12 noon on a weekday in October. Even so, the place was full by the time we left, so it is clearly a popular place. The service we experienced was without fault. I hope our experience is the norm.

Great late lunch with family, biggest haddock I have ever seen. Had that locally caught ling, calamri and my wife just cheesy chips. All with crispy fresh batter, chips golden but soft inside. Even cheesy chips were top, 1/2 chips, then cheese, more chips and topping of more cheese. All top quality, even the ice cream and with nice pints of Otter, bitter & ale on tap. Great way to end off long walk on the beach. You won’t be disappointed..
