My wife and I called in one Saturday afternoon and it was really quiet. After being stood at the bar for 10 minutes without seeing any member of staff I can understand why. We ended up walking out and going somewhere where they wanted our custom, personally I will not think about returning.

We are just not long back from the Vine we stayed for 4 nights and it was Excellent, all the staff were very friendly and welcoming and made our stay most enjoyable, the breakfasts were lovely and the evening food was great too, the hotel itself is steeped in history and still had that feel with all the oak beams old pictures and memorabilia, The rooms were clean tho a bit dated but i know that they have asked Marstons for a fresh lick of paint and some upgrades which i hope they get as they deserve it for the first class way they run it, if you are looking for supernatural activity then your in the right place with the cellar dating back to the 14th century and the bar and hotel to the 15th century, we had our own experience which we embraced with open arms nothing bad but exciting, We Cant wait to return to this wonderful establishment and all the great Staff would highly recommend to anyone 'G' & Debz Nairn Scotland.

Firstly I want to say how friendly, helpful and professional the staff are - they made booking in so much better and when I asked for an extra pillow it was done immediately. The room has everything you could need although maybe a small fridge/freezer might be helpful during summer months to help keep items chilled, the bed was amazing so comfortable and spacious even with my partner beside me. We ate at the hotel and the food was delicious and very reasonably priced especially when compared to other restaurants. The food was served in good time and more importantly was hot and cooked to order (I had steak), the desserts were lovely and for the price more than I was expecting. The only downside for other visitors could be the stairs and winding corridors to the rooms, but it's an historic building so there's only so much you can do but I think it's a lovely place and will definitely be back someday

This was our 3rd visit to the Vine as we were attending an event at the Staffordshire Showground. The hotel is well placed near center of town and handy for the road link to the Showground. Homely rooms, pleasant staff and Olde Worlde feel. Nice selection of breakfasts. There is parking on first come basis. Handy for the local shops too. Breakfast room could do with a bit of a makeover rather dull. Our only complaint was that a speaker in the bar was under our room and the bass come up up out room till 11pm. So we kept the TV on !!!

We come here regularly as a family for dinner. Tables can be booked online and they accommodate all tastes and requirements. The staff here are friendly and attentive. Nothing is too much trouble. We love this place because of its relaxed atmosphere and the historical vibe that they've captured so well with old photos and original features. The food tonight was exceptional and we were well looked after by Yvette, and Rob the chef cooked us an amazing meal. Great value for money too when dining with 3 teenage boys! Thank you and we will see you again soon .

Went for dinner Friday evening 24 november. Very quiet in the pub but both the service and the food were abysmal. My partner's steak was cremated, dry and tasteless. My burger was dry and tough . Even the garlic bread was burnt. Had to be returned. Got a refund but no apology. For a professional kitchen the quality was appaling. Won't be returning anytime soon.

Good central location. Room ok. Comfy bed with nice clean bedding. We were on 2nd floor and the room was warm even though window needs some repair work. Short staffed. One person doing check ins and running the bar on arrival. Breakfast reminded me of Fawlty Towers. My partner went to McDonald’s to get some supplies in whilst we waited. Not ideal with a hangover. When the drinks finally turned up after a reminder it wasn’t what we ordered and was only half the order. If you are staying for just bed and no breakfast then great. Unless you get the idiot guest who has a very loud telephone conversation outside your door at 5.00 in the morning. Feedback for hotel. Have a breakfast bar with hot drinks, juice and maybe some fruit or bread to keep guests happy whilst waiting for breakfast. It’s a shame. Lovely building and very friendly staff.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We stayed for two nights (Fri/Sat and Sat/Sun) in the Hotel part and also had our breakfasts there each morning, AND an evening meal (Saturday). 1. a) The house itself: Undoubtedly a very old building which provides a great ambience, full of character. This includes the wonderful low ceilings with wooden beams. The house lived up to our expectations from the six hundred (?) year old building, as did the rooms. b) The room we stayed in: We stayed in room 22 and it was a much quieter room than any that we had in many more modern hotels. Whilst neither ceiling, walls nor floor was "square" and "level" purely due to the age of the building, a superb shower and very comfortable bed with clean linen more than made up for it. We had a good sleep at night and great shower in the morning. 2) Food: a) Breakfasts: There is no laid out buffet, instead orders are taken individually which is perfectly fine. But here is where it was slightly tricky to rate: On Saturday morning, it took well over 1 hour (if not 1.5 hours) for the two cooked breakfasts to arrive, despite only one table of four having ordered ahead of us. Saying that, the host was very apologetic and when the breakfast finally did arrive, it was superb! On Sunday morning (breakfast only starts at 0900hrs), the breakfast still took about 45 minutes to arrive, but when it did, it was the wrong order. The member of staff, again, was very apologetic and after another 15 minutes, the correct order arrived. It tasted somewhat more greasy, having been differently cooked (not part grilled) to the one from Saturday (both mornings, I made the same order). This was a slight pity, but we were hungry. Dinner: The dinner (on Saturday 1700hrs), in contrast to breakfast, was both efficiently served and tasted excellent. The availability of grilled options added to the excellent taste. We were a party of three and the manager was kind enough to reserve a table for us. Definitely recommend dinner: Great taste and reasonably priced. 3. Staff: Great. Very friendly and helpful; they all tried their best to make up for any shortfall at both breakfasts. Could not do enough to make the stay pleasant. 4. Conclusion: I think, the Vine should definitely be advertised as "The oldest Inn in Stafford", "providing good accommodation and hearty meals to the traveller. It has great ambience; indeed a privilege to stay in such an old building. We would definitely wish to return but would not wish to wait so long for breakfast. Overall, a great place, centrally located and, again, providing good accommodation and hearty meals. Still got 5 stars as we did enjoy our stay.

Greeted very warmly on arrival..the room was lovely and clean with kettle, coffee and tea, choice of biscuits etc. A good view of the street, eateries and shops. We came down for an evening meal..the choices were varied and reasonably priced. I selected the small macaroni cheese with chips and my partner selected the chicken tikka masala with naan bread. All delicious and well presented. The beds were very comfy and we went down for breakfast to a wide range of options. We opted for fresh apple juice and then I had cereal with oatmilk and my partner opted for a bacon sandwich. We both had a lovely cup of coffee after. We are intending to visit again later in the summer. Highly recommended.

Called in for breakfast. Pancakes illustrated with berries and cream in a stack. The reality was there were no berries in the building and three dry lumps of dough side by side were deemed pancakes. Had to ask for syrup. Golden Syrup is not maple. Fruit was unavailable as all was in the deep freeze. Had to remind the "waiter", who called everyone "mate" that a croissant was part of the selection. A small steaming lump was eventually delivered with butter but no jam.

The location was perfect, just a three minute walk from the town centre. Free car parking included in the booking cost - however the car park was 'guarded' with a barrier, the code for which was on clear display on the reception desk in full view of anyone looking through the rear door. The bed was comfortable and the room a good size, but the shower had black mould at the bottom in the grouting and the sealant. Breakfast was tasty, and plenty of it, but the dining area was so hot it was uncomfortable to sit there and eat. The carpets in the communal areas were grubby and the tables in the bar were sticky. We wouldn't stay here again but it was a cheap hotel and maybe we shouldn't have had a high expectation in the first place.

We visited as part of a large group for a retirement event.Your staff were very welcoming, and the initial look of the premises is an old coaching house, but I'm sorry that's all very quaint but nothing beyond that. Very dated decor and in need of a scrub up. I needed to use the gents as we arrived...it was awful and had a very strong odour of urine, which was commented on by a number of our party. Cleaning is one of the easiest things to maintain. The beer my colleague had "Bomber" was not the best, having a slight vinegar taste.Once our food was served, burgers and chips it wasn't until many of us had visited that condiments such as mayo and mustard were bought to tables. The actual burger was okay, but served with minimal effort of about 15 to 20 chips, no salad and no real taste.Sorry folks but the needs to be a big improvement in the hygiene (toilets) and the quality of food and drinks.

The facilities varied according to your room and I had three over the four nights I was there. First room was 25. Comfy bed, reasonably spacious, good wifi. Trouble was the bathroom flooded as shower heads had just been cleaned and direction caused the problem. So after laying towels down to prevent damage to the bedroom carpet, I notified them and they moved me to room 26. This was a much better room with bedside tables, a light and airy bathroom (which didn't flood) and a really good layout. Trouble was that the wifi did not work! To cut this tragic tale short, I was moved to a third room which was really not good. Room 11. Comfy bed but that was all. Poky bathroom, noisy, sloping floor and limited space. I don't think this hotel should be used for accommodation. Yes it is the oldest hotel in Stafford but keep it as a drinking venue. The food wasn't acceptable either. I ate only one meal there and the glaze on the sauce showed it was microwaved. I ate all my other meals at the Swan and what a contrast! Super food, fabulous service, pay the extra for an acceptable standard.

I then ordered fish and chips and my husband ordered steak.. I think the steak was cooked and left on the plate while I ate my soup as it was tepid, the peas were cold and the onion rings non existent. We were asked if everything was ok with the meal and of course said no as it was cold. My husband is diabetic and having regular meals is important. We were very disappointed and the refund of the price of the meal did nothing to pacify. Had to make up for it with biscuits in the room.

Go to bar order meals and drinks ask what table, sorry no table no's on. Meals bought to us a while later no cutlery, again help yourself it appeared. No napkins asked for some oh there in the draw. Chips dropped off plate when bought to us was left on the floor. Now I know why there were no other diners in the restaurant. Never been to a self service restaurant in a hotel before. Gammon was obviously cooked from frozen which made it watery and quite chewy. Eggs just tasted of grease and and the yolks were solid. Chips were frozen and were tasteless even with salt and loads of vinegar. Peas were frozen peas which hadn't been microwaved properly. I had a mozzarella slice with salsa. We had selected the Vine hotel as it had a reputation for good food. Well, how wrong were we. I myself, had ordered the sirloin steak with a side salad instead of chips with Diane sauce, (for the steak, not the salad). What I received was steak and chips with a very small salad, one mushroom and half a tomato. The steak had no flavour and was incredibly fatty, the Diane sauce was watery with no trace of brandy, the poor excuse of a salad was limp and drowned in some vile vinaigrette dressing whilst the tomato was nearly black. Oh and did I mention that I wanted a salad and NOT chips! After 3 mouthfuls I sent it back stating the above and when offered something else, I refused.

Firstly, the good bits : the staff were very friendly. The location is central and just round the corner from the museum. There is a small car park onsite, which would not be big enough if all 27 rooms were booked and everyone had a car ! A small irritation was the extractor fan in the breakfast room. It was very noisy and the room seemed a little draughty, however, the waitres said it was on because a diner had burnt the toast, so maybe it is not usually a feature. The bed itself was very comfortable. The not-so-good bits : there were no bedside tables as the bed ( which was nice and large ) was crammed into a small space - so nowhere to place night water or devices. The meal was hot and my husband said his was very nice but regretfully, I had to send mine back because although I asked for 'well done', it was bloody inside ( not just a bit pink ). When it came back it was virtually the same. The whole place was shabby and in need of decorating, although cleanliness was not an issue. The room was £67 plus the usual fee for breakfast, so cheap for a centrally located bed for the night.

We found our visit to this old hotel fairly bleak. It was reasonable value for money and perfectly clean but disappointingly down at heel now. Breakfast was definitely poor so we left without the uplift you get from somewhere that cares.

The Vine offers Pub Grub of generous portions. We both ordered Steaks - one Rump, one Rib Eye - both were grilled to perfection, the knife cutting through like butter. The accompanying vegetables were fine - nice Chips, Peas, Mushroom and a really great Beef Tomato. I had a pint od Marsden Pedigree and another of Banks Blazin' Fury = excellent choices ! Nice Staff who work hard to make the meal a delight.

A group of eight of us booked in over the weekend to go on a day boat. The price we secured for the rooms was excellent and I can say we got more than expected for our money. The rooms were clean, fresh, with large comfortable beds, a good size tv, tea making facilities, a well stocked bathroom with lots of hot water and a suprisingly powerful shower. Each room was slightly differently set out because of the history, our room had an unusal step up to the bathroom. Yes there was a bit of noise as people settled down for the night like water running and the odd creaky floorboard from above but i found it suprisingly quiet to say we were over a pub. A good nights sleep was had.The staff at the Vine are second to none and go out of their way to make you feel welcome and comfortable. Nothing was too much trouble. We had to leave on the first day before breakfast but they very kindly sorted us a cold breakfast. The meals we eat there were good. Yes there were a few mix ups but they were quickly sorted. This is not a five star restaurant it is good honest pub grub. I particularly enjoyed the choice of menu. The bar is well staffed and the drinks not too pricey. We actually never left the place. Overall we enjoyed our stay at this beautiful quirky old place. The staff there make it even more enjoyable. We had a fantastic weekend. And I would go as far to say that we couldn't have chosen a better place for our jaunt and if we are ever back in the area I would definitely book again.

As you can see from my previous review on this establishment, it's not supposed to be 4 stars. I awarded three because of the intervention of the duty manager Matt and his customer service. Because of this, we went again a few weeks later in July but the outcome was still the same if not worse. This time I ordered sweet chilli halloumi with flatbread, onion rings chips and Asian coleslaw. When it arrived as you can see from the picture, it was just flatbread and halloumi with a small bit of lettuce and tomato. Hubby ordered the steak and chips with a side of onion rings. The steak was chewey and like rubber being overdone. (Supposed to be medium!!) the onion rings also were burnt and looked like they had been precooked earlier and just warmed/fried again. Obviously complained and after showing the waitress the menu about the chips and onion rings etc she apologised and went away to sort out. We then called her back to say that we had no cutlery etc to eat with! Hubby carried on with his meal while I waited for the rest of mine. A few minutes later a waiter returned with the chips etc. This is where you can see that Hubbys onion rings are refried when you compare the pictures. This time no one asked how we were enjoying or was there anymore they could do for us, so we finished our meal and left. We will definately not be going back here and after 2 very disappointing visits we cannot recommend this establishment

Really a pub with rooms not a hotel. My room was in the eaves with a small window (with broken sash cord) to the front and a further window (with the window catch long since broken and painted over) in the en-suite. Hence the room was like an oven. The double bed and fittings were nice enough but the carpet had not seen the hoover recently. The en-suite with shower over bath was OK but only if you were no taller than 6 foot as you would be brushing your head against the ceiling. The breakfast was acceptable but there was no sign of the continental option and the buffet station was untidy with empty cereal cartons and used tea bags in several containers as the original one was full. Also, at these prices you would have thought that they could run to a pot of tea instead of a diy thermos of hot water. All in all my impression was that the breakfast staff need to be more proactive and the manager needs to do regular house checks to improve standards.I paid £85 for singles occupancy for one night and have stayed at better for around the £50 mark.

I chose this hotel for the history of the building. It's over 400 years old. And I'm sure it has the original floorboards. There is no creeping back to your room here! The staff were lovely. The amenities were that good, we stayed another night. The bed was comfortable although the room quite warm. We had to sleep with the window ajar... (as that's as far as it would open.)The towels were plush. The breakfast was greasy, but edible. I had a chap offer to take my 30kg bag to my room, which was incredibly kind as there aren't any lifts. As a centra hotel for the history of stafford, you can't go wrong. There is on-sight parking.

This is a very old back street pub which is also a hotel. A Marstons pub now, which has an extensive pub grub menu and some good deals. Hubby had the steak and ale pie which he said was very nice, tasty and filling. Unfortunately, I went for the tikka marinated chicken salad with a side of yoghurt and mint dip. When it arrived, it was on a hot plate which meant the salad lettuce was already wilting. The chicken was pieces of chicken with a congealed curry sauce poured over the top. I tried a couple of pieces of chicken with the curry sauce but could not eat anymore. There was no side dip either. The sauce burnt my lips and mouth and I can eat hot curry. Obviously we complained and the manager came to the table. He was very accommodating and offered me an alternative which I declined. He even offered some milk to cool my mouth down. I eventually had some ice cream and we were given a free drink each. It's because if the managers actions that I have awarded 3 stars or it would have been lower.

Stayed in the Vine Hotel for an overnight stay. Location was fantastic and central to walking around the shops. Room was clean and nicely decorated with the comfiest of beds. Facilities in the room were good. Hot water plentiful, tea and coffee making facilities available and bottled water which was very welcome as the weather was very warm. There was a ceiling hatch that was slightly open which wasn't great with someone with an over active imagination. Ate in the hotel at night, food was lovely. Waiting staff were pleasant though not many of them. When I forgot to order my daughter chips kindly brought us some which was a nice touch. The reception staff were lovely and welcoming. Only downside was though breakfast was delicious there were not enough tables cleared and ready for new people to sit at. The bar staff though pleasant were having a very inappropriate conversation between themselves easily heard by customers - not very professional. Would definitely stay again if I return to the area.

Chose to eat here as it is near to the theatre. The food is based on home cooking so it isn't fancy & trying to be something else. It was good quality & most enjoyable at a reasonable price. The staff were attentive & made sure everything was ok even bringing more drinks to our table. The pub has lots of character & various areas so you can sit near the bar or in a more private area which would be good for families or groups of friends. The staff were all friendly and helping to help.

The cleanliness of the toilet / shower room room is disgraceful, absolutely filthy. See pictures. Clean sheets and towels and the room was ok. VERY small gap both sides of a ginormous queen size bed, far too big for the room, a normal double would allow you to get down the sides then. The 4 meals we had were terrible, 2 didn't get eaten and 2 only got half eaten. The waitress was very accommodating and offered 20% off the bill and a complimentary sweet, which thankfully were nice. £89 for the room was way, way overpriced, it was a £40 a night room max. Recommendations:Sack the chef, replace with someone who knows how to cook. Sack the room cleaners or at least instruct them how to clean.

Haven’t been here for years but called in on Friday night. We’d looked a recent reviews and some didn’t sound great, but we decided to try it. We didn’t have the set two course offer as they looked abit too basic, but opted for £15ish main courses. Thai chicken curry, sea bass, beef bourgineon, and the pan fried chicken were all decent portion and well presented. Decent quality food. Staff were pleasant enough too. Our only minus was the upholstery which was ripped and had taped repairs. I know management is newish so hopefully repairs are being planned, but this lets the place down. Otherwise decor is nice. We will call again.

I have been to Wolseley Garden centre many many times. The restaurant is lovely, food is always nice and the carvery is always excellent. The staff are friendly and professional and the stock is good quality with a large selection..HOWEVER the toilets absolutely reek!!!!! This isn't a one off, I've actively avoided the toilets here for years however I did have to use them today and as soon as I opened the door the pungent stench of stagnant urine punched me in the face and made my eyes water. The staff have tried to cover this up by using numerous Reed diffusers, I have to say, to absolutely no avail. This needs to be rectified wether it's a sewage problem I don't know but they could do with all new toileting facilities desperately. 🤢 I really can't tell you how ill that smell made me feel. I URGE BGS to send a member of head office to this establishment to experience this. I have also emailed an enquiry about this on their website and suggested it is forwarded to head office.

We celebrated my parents 60th wedding anniversary here last night and I was very impressed with the service we received. We had a side room to ourselves for 20 people, we all had a main meal, which was brought out quickly and was piping hot and very good. The steak pie was delicious). The staff were friendly and attentive and the whole evening ran smoothly due to this. Thank you to the staff for making it so special.
