Great tasting and portion size chips.

Visited The Village Fish and Chip shop yesterday about 2.30 pm. I walked in the shop, I was the only customer there and I noticed just sitting above the chip fryer were loads of pre-cooked chips not covered and I made a comment about having masses of pre-cooked chips. The man who served me said this was normal. The fish was made to order but not the chips and by the time we got home the chips were cold, nasty and soggy so I don’t know how long they had been sitting there and the fish was overcooked because the batter was hard, and the fish was very dry. What I don’t understand is why would they pre-cook a massive batch of chips when the shop was empty. I won’t be visiting again. Cost £25 which was a waste of money because I ended up throwing the meal away.

I ordered 3 fish bites with chips Fish bites were greasie & I'd say you get more fish in a fish finger. Chips were so chewie..stale! I only tasted both & threw it away Disgusting,worst I've ever had

Really disappointed. I really used to rate this chippy but this is 2nd time I’ve tried recently and it wasn’t great :( the batter was soggy and wet and so much water was coming out when cut into the fish. The chips were barely cooked as well. Not putting this out here to be horrid as I want to support locally but in the hope the establishment can know and make a change?

Was the best chip shop around but have to say, over the last couple of years it's changed. Gradually not only the portion size has got smaller but the quality is not good. The last straw was tonight, as I had the most biggest lump of gristle I have ever seen it was the size of a two pence!! Huge! completely put off for good now

FANTASTIC!!!!! This has been one of the best. The waiters were soooooo helpful and kind. The food was amazing. I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! Crispy thin batter and yummy curry sauce. I will definitely come back.

After really fancying chip shop chips and our regular place being closed we thought we would give this place a try. Sadly we were really disappointed. The chips were super dry, really really sharp and crispy and there were loads of tiny little potato bits that were cooked beyond oblivion so completely inedible. Guessing we got the last portion from that batch of cooked chips. We won't be ordering from here again!

I ordered two large chips and it was small to medium at best. A shame as its my closest chip shop but I will be going elsewhere now.

The chips was fine but the shawarma was not great at all, it was chewy and tough, no sauce so it was very dry. Will not be ordering this again. I didn’t enjoy it all.

We used The Village for a large corporate order. They were accommodating and went the extra mile for us which we really appreciated. Attention to detail was excellent and our large order was received with no missing items. The food tasted delicious and everyone was happy. Thank you so much for catering for our event. We will definitely use again.

First time ordering from here and unfortunately, the food was very oily; none of us finished our meal. Was a shame as we were looking forward to it.

I went to get something to eat and I can't believe they do not take cards. It's very expensive at £6+ for sausage and chips. Then I became perplexed when I saw them add raw frozen chicken wings to the chips they were cooking. This is unacceptable suppose I was a vegan vegetarian even allergic to chicken or its coating. I don't believe they need to be investigated by the local council for food hygiene. I will NEVER EAT OR RECOMMEND THEM.

Hi I wish to complain about the order of fish and chips from The Village Fish and chips. I was looking on the update for my delivery and it said due? I was actually outside of the house for the delivery at 136 Croydon Road,the driver called me from his mobile as he seemed to be somewhere else? Eventually when he arrived with my order he mentioned about an issue with his app? His App(driver) directed him somewhere different? I explained that if my food wasn't hot that I would be complaining, suffice to say that the food wasn't hot when I got it? Please confirm accordingly what you can do about this matter?? I want a refund please?

The chips were under cooked the sausage in batter was oily and the saveloy tasted fishy. The best part of the dinner was the curry sauce and cans of drink. I would never eat here again awful experience and food.

The chips were hard and NOT edible, Had to Chuck them away. Other parts of the food was ok but chips were horrible. This is a restaurant my family have ordered from On multiple occasions and after raising an issue with JustEat they refuse to help with the situation. Extremely unhappy about this which will result in us never ordering from here again!

Ordered a delivery. The chips were dark in colour and were very dry. Very unappealing and didn’t taste any better. The fish had a weird after taste. Would not order from here again. Only ordered as my usual shop is closed. Awful. How can they think it is acceptable to send food out like that.

After reading others reviews I thought it would be safe to order from here how wrong I was, the Rotisserie chicken was obviously cooked and warmed up in the fryer and was rock hard not even my dog ate it the chips were also reheated it was really the worst meal the rock was slightly better but I would definitely never recommend this place to anyone only used as moved back into the area never again complete waste of money and ended up in the bin and cooking instead.

Their cod and chips are glorious (and they have a loyalty card) but today I needed something a little lighter. I ordered fish cakes (they told me with some pride that they make their own in-house) and chips with a side salad. Two large fish cakes were served - light crunchy battered cakes stuffed with fresh mash, fish and fresh chopped spring onions and basil. Delicious. Also the side salad was very finely chopped tomato, iceberg, cucumber, celery and fresh parsley. So refreshing. I’m so lucky I pass this eatery on my way home. These guys really take pride in the food they fed.

I orders a steak and kidney pie and chips and received a chicken pie. The chips were really hard, greasy and over cooked.

Lovely fish and chips and arrived quick

Cod and chips now £10. I was a "walk in" as I live near by. Tried to pay by credit card but was asked for cash. Nicely cooked fish but chips were hard and under cooked.The food here used to be good and well priced. I understand prices have increased but I expect properly cooked food and not to be asked for cash rather than card.

Thought we would give this place a try as we usually go to Waterloo or Brixton for decent fish and chips as nothing nice in Sydenham. What a find - skinless cod that held its shape and chips were tasty and nice crispy batter - one of the tastiest I've had outside of Yorkshire- we will be back !

Lovely food and well worth the money. We have tried plenty of fish and chip shops, both takeaway and east on within the penge and beckenham area and this is the best.

Gross food - old chicken, old chips and cod swimming in oil. We couldn’t eat any of it.

Never had a bad meal from here!

I have given a one star for restaurant service because we had a delivery but you can’t leave a review without ticking something I have mentioned this before to Just Eats but nothing changes. I ordered extra large chips and a piece of cod, the cod was really nice so were the chips but I question the portion size of the chips I thought it was more a medium to large size.

I'm old enough to remember what decent fish and chips actually tastes like, and was surprised to see negative reviews for this little place, I visited in the early afternoon recently and the fish and chips were some of the best I have had anywhere for some time. The fish (cod) was beautifully fresh - which frankly is unusual for London, and beautifully cooked. So were the chips. The food here really was much better than the disappointing stuff offered in certain trendy restaurants in central London. I plan to make a return visit to "the Village", even though Clockhouse is well off my beaten track. In general, I hope standards of fish will improve in this country now we are out of Europe. Since the seventies all the best fresh fish has been going abroad and we have been palmed off with frozen muck.

Place is close to me so thought I’d give them a second chance, last time was bad this time it was pretty much inedible! Fish was oily soggy and bland, chips were crusty small and recooked maybe like 3 times. The place used to be nice and simple but the new management has managed to ruin the place with this awful wooden tacky diy awning type thing out front with awful giant fish stickers all over the place that no one ever sits in, chavy! They have managed to really run down the place. The place used to be busy now it’s empty most of the time. Shame! They should take a leaf out of the classy Spanish tapas place elmalino just down the road, always busy trendy and classy. Should rebrand and rebuild.

Awful food and the service was just as bad. The chips had clearly been recooked a couple of times, they were horrid. The fish was not nice. We could barely eat it. Missing items in the order. When my wife phoned to state didnt get all the food they just hung up on her! We will not be returning customers.

The resturant looked lovely. Very clean and aesthetically pleasing. However after leaving with our food and travelling 10 mins to get home we found we were missing an item. I phoned the restaurant who argued with me that they had provided all items ordered, but this was not the case. They eventually said I could come and collect the item but my children had already started eating so I couldn't leave with them for a 20 minute round trip. It was at this point they hung the phone up on me. Unfortunately, the chips were also over cooked to the point they were crispy and the mushy peas were heated so much they hD turned completely to liquid. A very unpleasant experience and I shall not be buying from there again, I would recommend others source another restaurant also.

Ordered 2 cod and large chips. Absolutely terrible fish, I don't believe it was cod, it had a funny taste smell and texture. I don't believe their oil is fresh and the chips wasn't proper chip shop chips, over cooked. If you want a decent fish and chips check out nemos on Croydon road, much better.

If you want the best fish chips, perfect batter, not greasy, perfect chips again, not greasy. I asked for onion vinegar and normal vinegar on one of the chips out of my order… they gave me 2 family sized bottles! The delivery was 20 mins after I placed my order… admittedly I do not live far. But this place is a must! 5 Star!! Merry Xmas to you all and thank you : )
