The Village Fish and Chips in Teignbridge

Visited here with my family for the 2nd time today and so pleased we did. The quality of the cod is perfect 👌 and the chips tasty 😋 my son loved the battered sausage with cheesy chips and he's hard to please! The service is great too. My little girl has taken a liking to the owner! It made our visit to Shaldon even more special than it usually is. Thank you for being open! We'll be back again soon xxx

We’ve been coming to Shaldon on holiday for around 10 years now and we always get food from here at least once during our stay. The food is always spot on and the service is friendly and chatty even when they are really busy. We love the fish and chips but my daughter swears by the mozzarella sticks 😀 Couldn’t recommend them enough and given how busy they always are it seems other people feel the same.

Well rounded place to pick up fish and chips. Excellent food served promptly with excellent service. Serves everything you'd expect from a chippy and run by a local family who clearly take pride in the food. Having visited twice during our stay, the food is consitent and good.

I’m sorry to say but the fish and chips were the worse we have had in a long time, with service below par. We haven’t used this Chippy in the last few years on Water Carnival Day but this is my feedback. One -on this water carnival day they didn’t open until 5.30pm which years ago they would have opened from 2.00pm to support the day that the water carnival committee work so hard to make a success. Two- I was about 7th in the queue when it opened and the chips were so soft, however there where also some chips that were hard meaning they hadn’t been cooked enough. They were all horrible! Are chips not suppose to be crispy? Well these definitely were Not. I was so looking forward to my F&C but will not be buying from here again. Such a shame!

Fish and chips at their best! We don't go to many fish and chips shops, but went to this one last in year. It's the only time I don't mind waiting ina queue, everything cooked to order, fabulous fish lovely chips, and the people brilliant. You seriously couldn't get better. Word of warning though their portion sizes have gone up! But prices still it bad. Would definitely recommend!

Great food! Came here last week with a friend. We both had Cod and chips - chips were amazing. Lovely customer service, had a joke with the owner and his wife about their eager customer "Sidney" the seagull whilst we waited for our food to be cooked fresh. If we're back on holiday around here again we'll certainly pay another visit.

Absolute diamonds of hosts and chips..

It was absolutely pouring down, and we were more than a bit disappointed with the weather dictating what we could do- certainly no drinks outside overlooking the estuary. So we decided to have a seaside fish and chip supper - excellent choice ! Substanual meals, more than enough chips in my portion to feed four, and the cod was huge, all beautifully cooked. Nice meal, and interesting people cooking it.

I can’t fault the Cod and Chips I had this evening. Everything cooked to order, as a Scotsman it’s just a pity there never had Haddock.

Lovely friendly service great quality food

Called in the evening for a few items. Had 4 x fishcakes, chips and curry sauce. Food was all very tasty. A bit of feedback: Shop looked a little untidy with cardboard boxes on the counter. I would also prefer to see the menu contain prices for individual items, rather than everything with chips (or list both). Shame they don't offer baked beans as our kids will only eat these.

Was a little worried as the reviews weren't encouraging. However have to say this was lovely the cod was fantastic and the chips what you'd expect. A large portion for the cost and would recommend trying this chip shop.

Chips was really badly cooked they tasted like they had been reheated they was chewy and probably been out of fryer for a while

Very busy but worth the wait, great chips and battered burger

I came here twice whilst visiting in Devon and was extremely disappointed both times. On the first occasion, the chips were clearly old and had been reheated as they had that shrivelled brown look, as well as tasting like cardboard. On the second occasion I came into the shop when there was no one there and ordered a large portion of chips, hoping that they would be better this time. Three local girls came in after me but somehow got served before me. Their chips looked very nice and as you would expect. Once they left, the only started talking to me about my appearance as clearly, I do not look English. The chips I got served seem to come more from the right side from where he served the girls and again I got chips that were rank and tasted like cardboard. I’ve got the impression that the son wasn’t keen on me as over the years you get to understand peoples facial expressions for what they are. Anyway I got into the car me and looked at the chips tried a couple and then dumped them in the bin at the Tesco petrol station when I went to fill up. We then searched on Google and found a fish shop that was open latish a few miles away and went there. You can see that one in my reviews and I gave it a positive review as the chips were excellent and the staff lovely to talk to. This particular fish and chip shop though I would not recommend to anyone. It might be good for the locals but he clearly keeps the old ones to one side and those get handed out to people that aren’t local. These days are hat with reviews and the rest you would think that an owner would just throw away the old dried out chips. NOT save them to give out to people who won’t come back. That should be the case anyway regardless of reviews but some people are just like that I suppose. If your not a local steer we’ll clear of this place as the chips you get will be old and rank. In fact cardboard would probably be more tender.

A really friendly chippy. The owners are lovely people. The fish is always cooked well.

I can honestly say it’s the worst chippy tea we’ve ever had. Thought we’d give it the benefit of the doubt but it was greasy and not many full size chips and I think it was doubtful that it was actually cod as it didn’t flake beautifully as it normally does. Such a shame as we wanted it as a holiday treat

The fish was OK. But the chips were over cooked and dry. No taste to them and they didn't even remove the bad bits awful chips would eat here again wouldn't recommend either.

Went here a few years ago when owners had just relocated and bought the shop went back with some trepidation last week due to some bad reviews, the owners were so friendly the fish and sausages were very good, not so keen on the chips but I think some very harsh and unfair reviews

Probably brilliant fish and chips if you can find it open. In our five days in Shaldon we never managed to reconcile the opening hours on the door with the hours on Google and the actual opening hours of the shop, but I’m sure persistence pays.

We went to the most friendly chip shop we have ever been too. To top that off we had one portion of fish and chips, they were sooo good that we had another. Fish so fresh as well as the chips. You wait whilst your order is cooked, and boy it's worth the wait!! Fantastic.

Currently in the area on a little family get away and I spied this little gem of a fish and chip shop. Although not imposing on the outside, let that not beguile you into your opinions, looks can be deceiving. The food was wonderful and of a decent portion size, the chips were cooked to perfection and they were not overly greasy and the fish was phenomenal. It is a shame I am not a local, otherwise you'd have a customer for life, but alas I shall make due with as many visits as I can before the car journey home! Keep up the good work!

Lovely village chippy,staff were very helpful and accommodating and food was very tasty reasonably priced as well.

Been coming to this chip shop for years when visiting family. Chips and batter always crispy, Good portion sizes and fish moist and tasty and Food cooked to order.Decided to try the donner meat which can (understandably) be a bit hit or miss at chippys. I was happy with it, not too crisp or fatty like some can be. Benefit of as much chili sauce as you can tolerate on it too which is great. Do highly recommend.

On the good side of average. This tiny, cluttered chippy is found on the left as you go out of Shaldon towards the beach. The fish was cooked fresh and was adequate if not generous in size. The chips were generous in quantity and good if not great. Service consisted of finishing a long chat with a regular before turning to the only customer waiting. The shop could do with a declutter of cardboard box piles in the serving area, a clean and spruce up, but the food is OK. Great if you are hungry and the nearest pub on the beach is awful.

after a 3 hour drive to shaldon fish and chips were the order of the day , so we thought. fish was so dry and chips were running with grease our bag we carried it in was full of it. Sorry i was so disappointed.

Visited last Saturday (24:9:22) and very pleased we did, family of 4 staying in the holiday park nearby all fed for less than £30! Wonderfully friendly and helpful staff who were rushed off their feet (unsurprisingly) with the huge demand! Donner meat and Chips to die for!! Will be back next year when we stay in Shaldon again 👍👍 10/10 (11 if I could!)

All food cooked to a good standard, lovely fish and chips by the sea, would thoroughly recommend.

Evidence that being close to the sea is absolutely no guarantee of good fish and chips. Nine of us to serve. On the positive side, the steak & kidney pie, and sausage were OK. As were the onion rings, curry sauce and mushy peas. Unfortunately, the fish was tastless and the batter too thick to be enjoyable. Nothing in the way of main meal vegetarian options. The chips were very poor indeed. Greasy and without any kind of 'chippy crunch'. The chips were glued together in a mass, a sure sign of poor cooking skills. We had high hopes. Shame really.

Had sausage and chips were absolutely delicious. Will be visiting again

Over priced. Batter is always soggy. Chips often under-cooked. Very limited menu. I am glad they are not open a lot. Disgrace to the village.

my wife and I called for fishcake,chips and peas one evening. the fishcake and peas were fine but the chips,were terrible.

Excellent fresh, moist cod in a delicious, crisp batter. The chips were fluffy and crispy. Top marks guys! We’ll definitely be back when we’re next in the village.

I have been visiting The Village Fish & Chip shop in Shaldon for many years. Dee and her family have really made it theirs. Just wish they were open more. The Fish is fresh and the batter crispy and tasty. The chips are even better. Best chippy on the coast.

Updated: In response to the owner's response. Sorry, but if you sold a good product in the first place then you would not receive poor reviews. And why should I waste more of my valuable holiday time returning your poor substandard product - what would that gain me? A mouthful of abuse in person for daring to suggest that your product was not of a good enough standard? Almost certainly judging from your petulant responses. If your fish and chips were fabulous, then I would have left a fabulous review. But they weren't. Sorry, but that's the truth, and sometimes the truth hurts I guess. It matters not one jot if I am a visitor or local - I would not buy fish and chips from here ever again. And reading other reviews (wish I'd done so before I'd bothered to visit and waste £20), I'm not the only disappointed customer. Sadly very disappointing. Two portions of fish and chips. Chips were cold and unappetising. Fish hardly any better. Quantity of chips was very generous but quality would better than quantity. Sadly, we will not return, there are plenty of other eating options in Shaldon.

We were very much looking forward to enjoying super fresh fish and chips tonight but sadly we were left very disappointed. Both our chip portions were almost cold and quite tough (our holiday home was only a minute from the shop). The size of portion was generous, but sadly most of it went in the bin. . Both portions of fish were also not hot and did not taste freshly cooked. Sadly, we will not return.

Fish and chips were lovely excellent value for money lots and lots of chips too just a shame they were only open Fri and Sat night otherwise I would of eaten there every night of my 4 night stay highly recommend

Although we had eaten earlier in the evening my wife had a craving for some chips. She found the staff friendly. She asked for the smallest prtion available and when she came out of the shop I thought she had bought enough for the village. Joking aside a very generous portion meaning that I had to help her out. I'm glad I did. They were really good.

Sadly this was not a positive experience. Bought two cod and chips last night; one piece of cod was cooked order the other was already in the hot cabinet. My fish was inedible very dry certainly not fresh; this was in complete contrast to my husbands; his was moist and tasted completely different to mine. The chips I have to say were very poor. I was looking forward to having fish and chips by the seaside but it was a disappointing experience as they ended up in the bin!

Had fish and chips here last night. Very prompt response from the young lady cooking who took our order. One piece of fish was definitely cooked to order the other piece of fish was already in the hot cabinet was not fresh. My fish was dry and inedible my husbands in contrast was moist. The chips were pretty poor for both of us very soggy not well cooked at all. We were very disappointed

We bought fish and chips to eat overlooking Shaldon beach. We all enjoyed our fish and chips and thought it was good value and big portions. Don’t follow the sat nav down to the postcode though as we ended up in a very narrow street! We eventually parked at he Shaldon pay and display car park and walked down and along the beach to the chip shop.

Absolutely top notch grub. Lovely owners. We look forward to our occasional Thursday fish and chips from here. Cooked to order. Generous portions. Fab location to eat on the bench looking at the sea.

The Village Fish and Chips. Are just great. A very busy local business that offers a great range of food and our favourite Friday night treat. Friendly staff for whom nothing is to much trouble and always jolly even when working under pressure. You won't be disappointed. Just be prepared for a short wait as there's often a lot of people at peak times. I've never had a portion of food from there that I've not enjoyed..

Well I have to say this was the greasiest fish and chips I have ever had in my life. Queued for about 45 mins, which I don’t mind once the food is nice but it was terrible. I agree with previous reviews that said the paper was stuck to everything, can’t believe I queued to buy this for the whole family. I wouldn’t eat there again. I don’t leaving bad reviews but it was very disappointing to say the least.

I've seen a few reviews here, and I've got to say that I'm also a victim of their greasy chips. Literally drove up the road to have fish and chips on the beach and the paper wrap had almost split as the chips were that greasy. Never known anything like it to be honest!Fish was alright and the price was good, but the chips man, how can you mess up chips like that? Gave it to the seagulls in the end

Friday night Fish, Chips, Mushy Peas & Curry, yummy yummy. Went down a treat.

Had scampi and chips. The chips were OK but the scampi was anything but scampi - maybe monk fish at best. You can always tell real scampi by the pink line and this was not scampi. Other than that they were doing a good job with covid distancing.

Brilliant Fish and Chip shop, parking can be a hassle as it's the centre of Shaldon and very popular

A really disappointing takeaway.. The covid awareness is spot on, taken seriously and they only let a few in and a time..which is great.However.. the chips were the greasiest we have ever had in our life. We had to wipe them with kitchen roll to try & remove the oil, the cod was beautiful, however the batter so dry that it was crunchy!... £20 thrown away as we couldn't eat it..plus the grease ran through the paper and onto our coats, whilst carrying them home..Such a shame as we like to support local.

I was a little hesitant after reading some trip advisor reviews but we had large fish and chips on our first night in Shaldon - cooked fresh to order, it was delicious and both dishes were eaten up! Very nice and would recommend.

Well , totally worth the wait for the best chips in the uk . Amazing beautiful soggy greasy chips . A visit to shaldon would not be the same without them , cannot recommend enough friendly service and best chips ever , thanks so much -vinegar girl x

Had some lovely fish and chips from Shaldon fish and chip shop you will not be disappointed. They had excellent covid 19 social distancing in place, felt safe with these in place.

We decided on our first night in Shaldon to have fish and chips in the seafront - big mistake , I know that we are in a difficult situation at the moment and didn’t mind social distance queuing , but this was awful service , the queue only had 4 in front of me but I was in the queue for 15 mins which was plush but that was only to place my order then I had to go oh side again and join another queue to pick up my order ! 45 mins later I entered the chip shop to be asked what I wanted !!!! I said well what was the point of pre ordering ! They said we cook to order which is ridiculous because the could easily estimate if they were going to be busy ! I would not recommend this place

The cod we were served was stale definitely not fresh. chips were ok. Disappointed

Came in with a friend this evening. Your fish and chips are incredible! I will be returning for definite! The chips were to die for, and the batter on the flaky white cod was divine! From a black country girl who likes her bright orange chips, you may have converted me to your normal chip shop ones 😂🍟 Ta ra a bit 😂😉

I had Scampi & Chips with Curry Sauce last night. It was fantastic. At the present time you call to place your order then collect at the time arranged, I picked a good time it was ready in 10 mins. Great food, great service, highly recommended

Been there dozens of times for fish and chips no problem lovely food but the last time we visited early one Saturday evening the fish and chips were disgusting, we suspect the food was reheated to order not freshly cooked to order, put us off going back for more.

A real pleasure to visit. Situated right in the banks of the river Teign in Shaldon with great views.

Not had fish n chips on the beach for ages but this was a pure delight. Had to make sure the seagulls didn't get their chance to steal but definitely wasn't sharing them. Amazingly fresh, beautifully succulent cod and yummy soggy chips - a delight. What's not to like - you've gotta try them which by the constant stream of people into the Village Fish n Chip shop shows that they have a good customer base. Thanks :)

Early evening walk and fish and chips out the paper....what’s there not to like? Only issue we had was the young lad was wearing a ‘baggies’ shirt and we’re Villa fans. Despite us beating them in the play off, we got still got served. Lol.

This was our 4th year back to shaldon and each year we dare each other to go to the local chippie and each year we can not understand why we bother, I dread to think of the general standard of some peoples regular chippie back home is if they rate this one as good, tasteless fish and the most greasy chips I have ever eaten, I kid you not... nearly half the portion was stuck fast to the bag they came in.i just do not understand how such a beautiful village by the sea can be home to such a bad chippie.

My chips were lovely, staff very friendly. Best chips in the uk beautiful! Highly recommend. Amazing year after year , those who disagree are very strange people, love the sign saying they don’t split portions - if you want to share these chips you don’t belong here x

Friendly service, fresh fish cooked to order and generous portions

Very disappointed. I went in today with my 4 grandchildren. I asked for 4 portions of chicken nuggets & 2 portions of chips. I was given 4 portions of nuggets & 4 portions of chips. I politely pointed out that the order was slightly wrong. I was then abruptly told this was what I had ordered & told I was being very rude! Even after the rudeness from the young girl, I offered to pay for what was served & once again I was told I was being rude & told to leave with my 4 v upset grandchildren. I have lived in the village since 1975 & have never been confronted with such rudeness. I feel that should someone be left in charge of the shop, they should be trained to a suitable level to understand the basics of customer service and politeness.I will be sharing my experience with my fellow Shaldon residents and sadly will no longer be frequent this chip shop.
