The Victoria at Cattal in Harrogate

This place was a real find for me. A lovely old fashioned pub sitting in a small country village. It has ample parking and a wonderful welcome from the owner and staff. Not surprisingly busy but nothing too icy trouble. Great Sunday roasts plus many other good options. Cannot fault anything about this place.. It’s a 10 from me!

Having not been for some time decided to go for Sunday lunch and now wish we had gone more often! Excellent meal from start to finish and well worth the money. We had starter, main and desert; each dish was cooked and presented to perfection. My wife and daughter are lactose intolerant but we were given a folder with all the ingredients of each dish they could choose which made it so easy and stress free. The choice of the menu was excellent and made it very hard to select. The service was excellent without being pushy and we were made to feel welcome, any queries were answered promptly. Hope to return very soon.

Couldn’t fault the food it was delicious! Only issue we had was is wasn’t very child friendly. Our 2 1/2 year old got told he couldn’t play with his toy cause it was too noisy for when other people come in to eat. Although we were sat close to the bar where there was people in drinking talking loudly and swearing .

Had a great dinner here with my wife on 28/9/23. Great foodie pub. All staff were incredibly friendly and efficient Food was very, very good. I had delicious liver pate and the pork three ways, it was wonderful, particularly the black pudding. My wife had smoked salmon and goats cheese and the incredible steak and mushroom pie with Guinness. Highly recommended

Food great - went with 6 people, had a variety of dishes, everyone enjoyed them all. Front of house staff generally great, with the exception of the manager, who was one of the most sour-faced and grumpy people I've ever been served by. Everything was a grumpy huffed "OK" or "Right." - weird, and tainted the rest of the experience a bit.

When you enter you may wonder if the last time this place had a facelift was in Victorian times. It’s very 1960s with dark furniture, awful lighting and some equally dreary artwork. If you’re missing anaglypta….it’s here. The welcome, food and service is top drawer. Absolutely excellent in every area.

Always a pleasure to go to the Victoria, good food, good service and with dear friends -absolute winner on a lovely spring evening, The chicken Caesar salad was just right, light Pinot Grigio wine complimented it and the affogato pudding delicious. Great night out

great pub restaurant we have been several times over the years and mostly been pleased every time however it is definitely a special occasion event these days as the prices have escalated but I can not fault the atmosphere nor the friendliness overall still very good

Absolutely amazing food. I had the 6 ounce fillet steak and it was absolutely fantastic. The presentation was also beautiful and it Also had a very spacious interior. Having dinner here with my family was great and my sister also thoroughly enjoyed her colossal sized fish and chips. There is also a wide range of luxurious desserts. It's not easy running a pub and making a living out of it. But if you want to see an example of a team that just gets everything right, visit the Victoria Pub in Cattal, North Yorkshire. Situated next door to the station, and therefore within easy access by train from both York and Leeds, we booked the Victoria for an evening family meal to celebrate our daughter's 21st birthday. The staff made sure the occasion was just perfect. The friendly and efficient service started as soon as we booked. Patricia is highly organised and took orders in advance for 15 people. Owner Steve has run several pubs very successfully and has been at the Victoria for 20 years. On the night, Steve was a constant friendly and welcoming face behind the bar. We were a large group, and the Victoria had found a good-sized room for us and decorated the table with some birthday balloons. Our meals were served quickly and efficiently by friendly, young, well-presented and helpful staff who are a credit to the pub and had clearly been well trained. The food itself was outstanding. The menu has a great selection of meat, fish, vegetarian and vegan options - thai crab cakes, mushroom stroganoff, fish pie and steaks were particularly popular among our group. The quality of the ingredients, cooking and presentation were a notch above what you would expect, even from a more expensive upmarket "gastropub". This place has no pretensions, but the chef clearly sets really high standards. I hear that the Victoria's Sunday roasts are legendary, and our parents returned a week or so later to confirm this. I had been hoping for a wider selection of Yorkshire bitters, but in the end I really enjoyed the locally brewed bitter. Steve clearly takes pride in how his cask ales are kept and poured. After several pints, nature took a call, and the local (resident?) artist's pencil drawings in the Gents provided an additional bonus... Thank you to Steve, Patricia, everyone behind the bar, the table staff and the kitchen staff for making our evening so special. If we didn't live 200 miles away, we'd be at the Victoria more than would be good for us.

Wonderful food choices on the small but beautifully crafted menu. Excellent presentation of both our starters and mains. Spoiled for choice. Superb selection. Friendly and attentive service throughout. Never fails to please after many visits.

Excellent choices for gluten free although not obviously on the menu. Very good gf pizza bases and delicious pasta dishes. I had the stroganoff pasta which was particularly tasty. Great Italian draft beer too!

Rightio, I've felt compelled to write another review for the Victoria because this year has been so difficult for hospitality. I must reiterate I'm not connected to anyone at the pub nor do I have any vested interest.I'm 36 years old and other than my local bar in Harrogate this is the only consistent in my adult life, I've been coming here for 17 years, in all that time not a single standard has dropped, the food is Rosette level (Trust me I worked at a Rosette restaurant) the service is superb and never waivers, The young lady in the restaurant with blonde hair and glasses and the more middle age lady (I'm sorry I always forget your names!)? They run run the dining room with an efficiency and service level a top London Maitre'd could only dream of. Then there is the main man Steve, always makes you feel like you're the only person in the restaurant, takes the time, asks how you are, no matter how infrequently you visit, he'll remember you.Places like this are lifeblood of our country, to see it so quiet the Sunday before Christmas was utterly heartbreaking, The Victoria has been my go to place for events, occasions and treats, since I was a know it all teenager, it's still far and way the finest place for those things, my life had cracked on but my love for this gaff hasn't, it's still the finest place to eat drink and be merry.Hopefully I'll be back soon

Walked in asked if I had to make a booking they said they were fully booked so I went and sat in the car and rang them to see if they were fully booked and they said no. I had just finished work and wanted something to eat.I think I was Turned away for being in my work clothes. Absolutely amazing meal. All the food was incredible. The steak was perfectly cooked and the black pepper sauce was one of the best things I've tasted. Portions were amazing for the price and the staff were absolutely fantastic.

What a splendid evening we had tonight, the food was excellent, social distancing being observed and what a brilliant job Pat & Steve have done during these testing times. This was our first venture out since March and we felt reassured that everything possible had been done to make our visit safe and pleasurable. Little lid off Sunday drive with Max the Scotty. Pre booked a table and planned the trip to get there on time. Pub all set up for Covid, plenty of signs and sanitiser and tables well spaced. Shown to table and drink order taken, no Shiraz but a pretty good Malbec, pint of Flummoxed Farmer for me.Shared a pate starter, nice as was the onion marmalade.Two mains of roast beef, wow what a lot of beef, tender too. Veg a bit limited, three slices of carrot, a couple of coli florets, garden peas and some roasties. Should have mentioned it, we'd have maybe got more ... but we're British.Altogether pretty satisfied.

Today is first day in a long while that we aren't getting ready to go for Sunday lunch at the Vic and a pint of Balky's. We were there for the Vic's opening and we will be there for its reopening, soon as you like, soon as you can.

This pub is really friendly and lovely place to eat for those special occasions really great steaks and a good seafood menu. It’s very popular and well worth a visit when we get back to a normal way of life after the corona virus has hopefully disappeared.

We celebrated our daughter’s 21st birthday along with 33 friends and family. The food, drinks and service were exceptional and the evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all. We would highly recommend using The Victoria for any celebration. We have been lucky enough to have eaten here on many occasions and have never been disappointed. We look forward to visiting again soon.

So so. Not brilliant in our view and not cheapest but very willing staff. There's a lot of competition out there yet it's well patronised.

Really impressed. We were staying in the area for my birthday and hadn't planned anything to eat as we had activities planned. We decided to call here not knowing what to expect. With storm Ciara and Dennis, most of our plans had been rained or flooded off so it hadn't been a great birthday so far. We got there not thinking we'd need to book and it was busy but they kindly fit us in and never felt it was a problem. They set a table for us straight away, the service by all staff was excellent and the food was the best we had had in a long time. Considering how busy it was the food arrived in good time and was delicious. The hospitality was excellent with very attentive staff. We both said that we would love to go back again. Thank you for fitting us in, it really made my birthday much better!

We used to go to The Duke of Wellington in East Keswick many years ago when Steve Balcombe was mine host (and the place used to buzz!), we were delighted to see Steve at the bar as we walked in for the first time tonight on recommendation for a great steak.A quick drink at the bar and a reminisce led us to the restaurant. We shared a starter - Moules marinière, delicious, followed by surf and turf (garlic king prawns and ribeye) and another ribeye. Both were accompanied with crisp veggies, chips and potato gratin, The steaks were cooked bang on and all the meal was 100%! We really enjoyed our meal and are only sorry it’s taken so long to discover a brilliant gem of a pub and restaurant.We will definitely be back - nice one Steve!

Party of x19 people. The Victoria has a welcoming atmosphere is clean and well presented, the staff were very attentive, food was very high quality and we all had a great evening.

Booked to have my parents 60th wedding anniversary here and had a lovely time. As there was 15 of us we had the Library room to ourselves which was nice. As there was 15 of us we were sent menus to choose from in advance and all my dealings with them were handled in an extremely polite and helpful way. We had some special dietary requirements which were also catered for. On the evening we were made to feel very welcome. The staff were very friendly and extremely efficient and the food was delicious. All in all this made my parents 60th anniversary party very special and one they will remember and treasure.

Siempre excelente comida, excelente carta de vinos, un par de cervezas de barril perfectamente conservadas y excelente ambiente. El propietario Steve Balcombe es el anfitrión perfecto y su personal brinda un excelente servicio.

Hemos comido en The Victoria varias veces a lo largo de los años, pero no tenía el menú de Navidad, ¡GUAU! El pavo estaba fuera de este mundo, así que tan sabroso y cortado como la mantequilla, las papas asadas eran absolutamente perfectas, al igual que el resto de las verduras, no se puede mejor la salsa de arándano casera.

Are amazing (see pic). Far better than any chippy around. Don’t hesitate if you’re a local. Fish was huge and succulent and curry was top/notch. Also try takeaway curry but be prepared to be beaten by it!

Have wanted to dine here for a while as this pub is on our doorstep. We had a fabulous family meal here last night, we weren’t disappointed and shall be returning very soon.

Over the last 6 months I've dined at the Victoria on a number of occasions, each of these was most enjoyable. The Landlord and his staff are all very friendly and efficient and the food outstanding. Highly recommended.

This was without a doubt the best traditional Sunday roast lunch I’ve had in a restaurant in many a long year. The service is friendly and efficient. The portion sizes are very generous-my advice would be to forgo a starter. The food quality was excellent. I couldn’t decide between the roast beef and pork. The waitress suggested I have a bit of both - what a result. The surroundings are more traditional pub rather than fancy high end restaurant, but it’s comfortable and spacious. I really can’t recommend it highly enough. You need to book it’s obviously busy. Oh and the roast potatoes were the best I think I’ve ever had

We had heard about this pub from friends, and finally organized a visit on a Sunday afternoon in October. Although it was incredibly busy, we were quickly seated in the bar and our drinks soon served.

There were seven of us, plus my tiny granddaughter. Nothing was too much trouble and the food was perfect. The beef was some of the best I've ever had anywhere and I'm told the roast pork was pretty good too. Thank you to everyone for making it such a special occasion for us.

This was my first visit to the Victoria in many years and I couldn’t fault it. We were there for a family Sunday lunch and sat in the back near the garden which was perfect, lots of atmosphere but not too noisy. The staff were warm and friendly from the moment we walked in, we had crab for starter which was delicious, roast pork for main (loads of veg and potatoes) and dessert. I can honestly say the best Sunday lunch I’ve had out in a while. I would highly recommend and will definitely be back again.

Whilst on a short visit to York we were recommended to eat at the Victoria Pub. It is a short distance from York, where we were staying, but in Cattal very near the A59 on a major route out of York. The food is excellent and well worth a visit if you are passing.

It’s a pleasure to visit this pub with an outstanding restaurant. The highest accolade that I can give is that having visited this pub several times over the years I’ve never had a bad meal nor below par service. A big thank you to all of the team at The Victoria.

We were staying nearby, had passed it on the train and read the overwhelmingly positive reviews so decided to give it a go. My wife suffers from coeliac disease but fortunately they had fairly extensive gluten free choices which made for a good start although we found the dining room a bit dark with all the wood panelling but this didn't take away the enjoyment of the food. My wife ordered the melon expecting it to be small fan slices but it ended up being considerably more - larger appetites in Yorkshire perhaps? She followed this up with fillets of sea bass and finally creme brulee. I had the button mushrooms, followed by a fillet steak, one of the best I've ever had, and finally the Eton Mess. To finish off the evening we both had a floater coffee. The cars in the car park indicate some of the people who use the pub have deep pockets and this is reflected in the prices but as a one off visit (we live in Devon) it was very enjoyable.

We were having a fantastic late Sunday lunch at The Victoria, snatching updates from the Landlord, Steve Balcombe, who was watching the game on his iPad behind the bar. The rumour was that he had £1,000 at 33-1 on an England win. If true, his sporting pedigree ensured sang froid that few could match as the cricket reached its climax... Great excitement and food all round!

Sorry but found the place dark and dingy. Nice pint but the food is in my opinion nothing to write home about. Tried the chicken curry but it really was not as good as you can make yourself with hard chicken and tasteless sauce. You get an eggcup of rice,corner shop Poppadoms and tiny nann bread. Other members of our party also not impressed by their meals. We expected much better food for the price and will not be going back.

We visited at the weekend for Sunday Lunch are we’re really impressed.

We booked this venue on the recommendation of our daughter and were not disappointed. The table for our party was in a private section of the premises and was just right for a family gathering as it allowed for good conversations between all.

A group of us ate at the Victoria last night and it was excellent in every way. They cater for all tastes and appetites, friendly staff and they have a decent wine list. I thought there was something wrong with the sauce on my main course but it turned out I didn't like the flavours. They happily offered me another choice but I had the same one without the sauce and it was delicious. 10/10 for helpfulness.

We stopped off here enroute north/south, looking for something other than the usual service area stop off. What a find!

The Victoria never fails to disappoint. We’ve been visiting this pub for many years now and once again have enjoyed a fantastic meal. A friendly welcome, large & varied menu, quick service and delicious food. Well done to all the staff for your continued hard work and always making visits so enjoyable!

Fantastic service from friendly and efficient staff, had panko halloumi fries, fish pie followed by ice cream in a brandy snap basket, all of which were delicious and very well balanced. Lovely lunch.would reccomend.

We were staying in the area and walked down, what a great find! Staff super friendly and the meals were wonderful, especially the crab and the lamb shank, plenty of gluten free choices, very accommodating. We had a great evening. Thanks to all the staff.
