Seeing as my review was removed I will try again! Stay away. I went to the so called “quiz night” and it was awful. You would have found a better atmosphere in a morgue. Hardly any there, no music, vile smell and it was dirty. I use to frequent the pub before lockdown and it was fantastic. It has apparently changed hands since and not for the better. I will definitely not be going back. The smell and filth were enough to put me off my beer let alone dreary feel to the place. Very sad to say that I will not be recommending a once lovely pub

Terrible hygiene, sticky unclean table, animal hair everywhere and a disgusting smell of cat wee and cigarette smoke. The food was ok at best. Would never recommend this pub again, which is sad to say as we frequented the pub when the last owner was there. The good reviews are most definitely due to the last landlord. AVOID

Arrived to find an almost empty pub. The pleasant young lady serving turned out to be the only good feature of the day. Started off with a flat pint of butter which did not bode well. My starter of calamari was so over cooked, sorry deep fried, that it was barely edible. For main course I had gammon which was bland and only just off being raw in places. My partner had the”Meatless Roast” which was basically a plateful of vegetables! Brocolli undercooked, carrot overcooked, mash potato awful and a few roast potatoes. Both of us left half the food on our plates. In summary the worst meal that I have had in a long, long time.

Called in here for a couple of drinks as I used to come here many years ago after I had been horse riding next door... the place was Quiet not many in and the bar man was laughing and joking with a couple of regulars sitting at the bar the mile high club was mentioned ( smutty ) I waited for a Hello or a Hi but no nothing... my partner ordered a pint and I asked if they did a house double vodka? The reply was No! We're not that sort of a pub?? What on earth does that mean? If you want a double vodka then that's what you order he stated... how rude and obnoxious not to mention expensive £10.20 but let us off with the 20p... in this day and age with most businesses struggling to survive you would think a simple Hello and a welcoming smile would be the least one could offer. We had intended to stay for two drinks but I just couldn't wait to get out of the place... My partner was going to ask for a packet of crisps but thought better of it just incase he was told no! We're not that sort of a pub! I rest my case.

We are still waiting for the owner to get back to us with an explanation and / or and apology !! We have tried to make contact several times but to no avail. we booked here for two nights and stated in one of two rooms situated behind the pub in the car park. I'm the first night the fire alarm woke us up at 3am! We panicked and proceeded out in to the car park in the darkness and it was raining and at no point were we met by anyone from the Vane Arms. We had no contact details or any procedures in our room of who to contact in an emergency which we found strange. We were left for approximately 15 minutes in the rain, cold and dark and then they alarm stopped. Thankfully! The following evening upon our return we popped into the pub to find out what had happened and a young lady behind the bar advised us that there had been a problem with the pub fire alarm but assured us it had been sorted and everything's fine. She did at that point apologise. we went to sleep on our 2nd night and yet again around 1.15am the fire alarm went off. This is a loud screaming noise which you cannot just ignore. This time another couple were staying in the room next four and we met them in the car park. The alarm eventually stopped after about 20 minutes. We went back to bed and approximately 30 minutes later the alarm went off again!!! The couple in the other room stayed in their room but decent outside again and fi r over 30 minutes no-one came to see us and the alarm was still going iff. We believe noone was staying in the pub. We were by this point angry frustrated and wide awake so decided to pack up and leave. And when we left the fire alarm was still going off!! We have heard nothing from the owners no explanation no apology no nithing. They have totally ignored our messages and our emails which we find absolutely appalling. What's more appalling is that there are no fire or emergency procedures or contact details in the rooms which is a very scary situation to be in when it actually happens. This really is unacceptable.

We had booked a table for four for 2pm here after a visit to NT Lyveden New Bield. Our order was taken very promptly in plenty of time before the kitchen closed at 2.30 as I had been told but we then had to wait nearly an hour for the food to arrive. It was good when it did come but again when we requested the dessert menu, it did not arrive and my husband had to fetch it himself. All in all a decent meal but spoiled by the appalling service. A good job we hadn't seen our friends in a while and had plenty to talk about!

22 of us, aged 3 months to 89 years, descended on The Vane Arms yesterday to celebrate our matriachs birthday. We all had a wonderful time. The wide variety of pre-selected food choices we had (including children's meals and gluten free) were, without exception, absolutely delicious and the staff could not have been more friendly, efficient and helpful, group photos requested! A lovely gem of a place and very good value too.

We happened upon Vane Arms on a Monday evening when other pubs in the area weren’t serving meals. What a nice surprise to discover good service, good ales and even better burgers. No children’s menu but they were happy to provide smaller portions or an extra plate for sharing. We noted that new mums were made to feel welcome in the dining room.

This is a regular and convenient meet-up place with friends who live in different parts of the country. Landlord is always friendly and welcoming. I shared starters and a main meal with a friend as we did not feel like a large meal that evening and this was not a problem. The food was served promptly, well presented and tasted good. The lightest choice on the menu had actually sold out so perhaps need to add a few more choices that would provide more options for people? Would still recommend a visit.

Aaron the landlord is very welcoming as are the locals and the pub is very cosy and the decor is tasteful and all very clean. The beers are well kept and they have good selection of gins and wine! The food we had was very good and plentiful we all had different meals and we all enjoyed it. The food was cooked to perfection. The young waitress did get mixed up with our dessert we asked for a lemon meringue dish and got the zesty lemon tart. She said it was correct! We knew it wasn’t but never mind we enjoyed it. The person behind us that asked for the lemon meringue dessert and got the correct one. She was busy so we didn’t make a fuss overall a lovely meal. Service food and value good

Fresh water was provided free of charge (including a bowl for Nobby the lab!). The food was top notch, fresh, well presented and plenty of it. The barman & locals were friendly & welcoming and the pub overall had a warm atmosphere which oozed history including the numerous old coins knocked into the wood over the fireplace from WW2 bomber crews who had not returned from their missions, very thought provoking but a nice way to remember those brave souls. We chatted with the barman before we left and he told us of the various speciality nights that he arranges including a Cromer crab night in a few weeks which sounds great!

Well we had done the working and our hosts decided that we were so good, that we deserved a treat. Not having been in the area of Northampton much we were treated to the Vane Arms Sudborough a pub that my brother in law had not visited in a long time. We were not disappointed although the place was quieter, than my brother in law remembers, I did mention that there was a good rugby match on the TV so many would be in doors watching. A hint that went unnoticed or just plain ignored. The meal was worth missing the match. Simple fish and chips but none of your frozen chips bought in by the ton freshly peeled and hand cut chips cooked to perfection along with the fish in a crispy delicious batter. They have a really snug snug with arm chairs rows of bookshelves filled with books and comfy atmosphere. The landlady was good for a laugh and the place itself was very clean and tidy.I would highly recommend this pub to anyone in the area locals or visitors alike.

We went to this lovely establishment for my mum in laws birthday. We walked in and immediately felt warmly welcomed. We had a quick drink and were shown to our rooms. The rooms were lovely we had one of the downstairs rooms and the others on our party had the other 2 rooms. Our room had a massive bathroom which had a tiny bit of a slope to get into but the landlord assured us that the more we drank the straighter the floor got we had dinner there which was lovely pub grub but with a bit more of a refined look. The food tasted amazing so hats off to the chef we couldn't fit in pudding as we were so full but the puddings sounded amazing. We ended up staying up till about 3 in the morning drinking and chatting to the landlord who had a wealth of knowledge about the drinks he was selling. His stories were amazing the bad 'dad' jokes slightly cringe worthy but all in all he definitely makes the place a success. Can't wait to visit the other establishment he's opening in Kettering if it's anything like this place it will probably be one of the most popular places to go after a few months. I hope that Aaron never leaves that place because it won't be the same.

A very friendly welcome at the Vane Arms in Sudborough. We were shown directly to our room which was on the ground floor of a converted barn, looks from the outside were promising. As we entered the room was pleasantly decorated but I detected a smell of dampness and put this down to the fact that it was a warm day and the room may have needed airing a bit. The sheets and towels were clean as was the room in general, but what was upsetting was the black mold around the skirting boards and bath. There were signs of water damage and damp on all of the exterior walls. We decided not to let our initial impression of disappointment cloud our evening and went on to have a very enjoyable evening in the pub. Our host could not have been more obliging and the locals were super friendly too. The food was reasonably priced and of a good standard. We opted for the boxed continental breakfast which was delivered to our room at 8:30 am. When we arrived back at our room despite having opened the window the damp smell remained, but as the general standard of cleanliness was ok we chose to ignore it. I'm the morning we showered in the very dated and poorly ventilated bathroom( snails in the vent), and checked out the breakfast box. Oh dear! Small box with a small orange juice, instant porridge, wafer biscuit, tiny apple and a pain chocolat. At £10 we decided to decline.I strongly believe that the landlord is on the right track and has the best intentions for his BnB. However the whole building is in need updating in a structural way and we won't be staying again. I would definitely call in for a drink and meal though as the pub itself was great.

Brilliant landlord, very friendly. Rooms not as expected, in desperate need of updating, damp. Room was supposed to be deluxe double but was only really average. No shower gel or shampoo samples available, towels were not changed despite hand towel having make up on from day before. Had ordered breakfast but as expecting many people to watch rugby was offered bacon sandwich and pot of tea. Declined eventually given cooked breakfast. Evening meal of duck was at best luke warm as were the potatoes, dessert of carrot cake was dry, tasted like it had been uncovered most of day. Early hours of Sunday morning woken by noisy upstair residents, landlord totally unconcerned. Beautiful building, beautiful surroundings just very disappointing in every other aspect.

We stayed at the vane arms overnight. Looks very nice from the outside with the Cotswold stone and the thatched roof. The landlord was very welcoming and showed us to our room although it was not in the main building but in a separate cottage just a few yards away OK if the weather is not too bad but probably not so good if raining heavily or if there should be ice about ,on the other hand there won't be any noise from the bar downstairs. The menu is varied with a good selection however for us although we enjoy a good salad we would have liked it better if we were given the option of weather to have a salad dressing or not as we don't like mustard ,and it was mustard based. The room was clean and tidy with coffee and tea on hand with some cookies as well. Clean fresh towels were also provided ,the bathroom was a decent size with overhead shower ,however I think it would benefit from a new shower head how ever with the price we paid it was good value for money. The breakfast was OK however considering that they have a good restaurant it would have been nicer if a cooked breakfast was available rather than a do it yourself one brought to your room .I'd happily pay extra for the option. We also ate in the restaurant in the evening and will give top marks for that .my wife and I both had steak it was beautiful plenty of peppercorn sauce with fat chips and vegetables no concerns there and we had ice cream to finish off all put on a bill which we settled the following morning and a nice check out time of 11am .all in all very good for the price. Would I stay here again Yes I would .

A family group, we went this week for a birthday meal, which was very good. The rustic bread balsamic vinegar/olive oil and olives were lovely. The 8oz rump steak was served exactly as requested. The house burger and chicken with pancetta looked very appealing. The pub was fairly quiet and the restaurant was not too busy, with only 3 occupied tables, but considering it was early on a Monday, this would possibly be the norm.Attentive waiting staff made us welcome. The only down side, which could have spoiled the evening if we had let it, was a rather rude customer, who made inappropriate comments. This was not the fault of the staff though and we would definitely consider returning.

My husband and I were taking his parents out to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. We had never been here before, but having heard good things thought we would give it a try. I'm so pleased we did. from the moment we walked in we were made to feel really welcome. The inside of the pub is really nicely laid out as a traditional country pub, it had a lovely little snug where we sat with our drinks whilst we looked at the menu, and then after ordering we were shown through to the dining room. The whole meal was fantastic, freshly cooked and extremely tasty. So good in fact that we all had 3 courses, and we rarely do. The menu was varied, and there was plenty of choice. I think it must've been the landlord who served us and he was really friendly and interesting to talk to. Just a nice genuine guy. We will definitely be back, I have now found my new pub of choice for something a little bit special but still homely. Next time i'm definitely going to try a burger, because they looked delicious. cant wait to return.

Stayed here mid week as had a job interview nearby and didn't want to spend out on an expensive hotel. The Vane Arms is a little gem! Rooms are within a small cottage in the car park area. Our room was a small double. With a little damp it did smell a little musty when we got into bed however it was cosy.A good shower and constant hot water its simply missing some home comforts like a hairdryer, full length mirror and same size towels, we had a bath sheet and bath towel for a couple not the end of the world but the attention to detail was missing. Decor was nice and overall stay great, would recommend.Food was delicious, and plentyful. I had duck and my boyfriend had veal sausages which were polished off quickly! Landlord friendly and price very good valueSome great gins behind the bar which the landlord could talk us through confidently.

Our experience here was tops in every way. The food was simply delicious, and my husband absolutely devoured his gammon steak. My lamb in a packet dish (sadly I did not write down the name) was creative and so tasty. We dined at a cozy table next to an old fireplace with large pennies stuck in the wood. They were placed there by American airmen stationed at a joint RAF/USAF base nearby during World War II before flying off on bombing missions. If the airmen returned, they retrieved their pennies, but if not....Obviously there were many who did not return :(. We very much enjoyed our chat with Anne, the proprietor, and we shared book titles with her. She made us feel so welcomed, and we left feeling like we had made a new friend. This is definitely an establishment worth a venture off the beaten path.

Walked in to be greeted by the landlord who immediately made us feel welcome. A selection of hand pulled ales were available including some that I have not tried before. Having a starter and a main each my colleague and I enjoyed our meals, especially the starters. My colleagues steak was a little chewy but my meal was perfect. I would highly recommend the vane arms and will definitely be going back.

Went for Sunday lunch based on previous reviews. Had phoned in advance to check menu as not available via the website and was told that vegetarian options are cooked fresh on the day. These turned out to be lasagne and chips or a salad! Not very inventive! Vegetarians do enjoy a nice roast on a Sunday too! The rest of the party opted for the roast beef which was ok, but nothing special. Very limited choice of starters, including more Yorkshire pudding! We didn't have starters. Also poor choice of dessert and very much geared up for winter.....rice pudding, steamed pudding, rhubarb lattice etc.

We went with friends to the Lobster night at the Sudborough Vane Arms restaurant and had a magnificent dinner. Once a month, I am told, they have a "lobster or crab" evening where they prepare a dinner complete with starter, sorbet to cleanse the pallet and the main course. I absolutely love lobster and this month was their lobster feast. It was truly wonderful! You can select a half or a whole lobster and I recommend the whole lobster as it is absolutely delicious! I am definitely looking forward to going back to their seafood evenings!

The Vane Arms in one word,,,, fabulous. The sunday lunch was fantastic, lovely roast beef, large proper yorkshire puddings, fresh veg cooked correctly and not all mushed up. In my opinion this roast dinner is hard to beat, quality of meat, fresh veg, gravy and also the portion size is very good. The whole experience for me was brilliant, lovely ales, great family atmosphere, with friendly locals at the bar chatting. Its how a pub should be, it has all of those things that the "chain pubs' get so wrong.I live an hours drive from there, Bury St Edmunds, i'm going back there at the end of the June. There is the Lyveden National Trust Lodge and moated garden near by (near Oundle, Northamptonshire, PE8 5AT)Book yourself a table, you will not be disappointed. To the staff at the Vane Arms, Thank you.See you SoonCooper

We go out to eat every night so we drive around looking for country pubs that offer good food. We fell upon this place and it's deceiving large inside, the service was friendly and although limited the menu had plenty to chose from. We ordered our food and proceeded to wait, apparently it was busy for a Monday even though it didn't seem it, the food took nearly an hour to arrive which is ok if we had been made aware of the wait before we ordered! However the food was really good so they were let off a little. My only other complaint was that it was quite cold so wished I had taken a coat!

Stayed here the night before a course so needed a good meal and a good nights sleep. I had phoned in advance and advised i would be arriving around the time the restaurant closed and had 'pre ordered' my food. I was greeted enthusiasticaly by Aaron the landlord who greeted me by name and advised my food would be ready in 5 minutes. We spoke for a while and he was genuinely interested in why I was staying and who I was. I was shown my room and he made sure everything was satisfactory. On my return a table was already laid out and my food was on the table in the promised 5 minutes - and the food was excellent! Also not expensive! The room was clean, and a good size with a very comfortable bed and soft linen. The shower was great and you get a bath.In short a fantastic little gem in a sleepy village i would highly recommend!

Booked having looked for establishment close to A14, en route to A1. Lovely sleepy village and The Vane Arms is a very pretty thatched property - very nice altogether. Was greeted by Aaron, I presume the owner, who was absolutely excellent in every way. Aaron was both attentive and enthusiastic at all times and being on my own, always had a word in the passing - a top bloke! Room in the cottage was to my liking, clean, good size as was bathroom - brilliant shower in bath and comfy bed.Nice selection of beers and a really good menu - I could have had anything on offer. Food was fantastic and Aaron's enthusiasm made it all the more enjoyable. I very much enjoyed the evening. I would have given 5 stars but for the light construction in the cottage. A couple were above me and the gentleman was restless, waking me up 3 separate times that night and I am not a light sleeper, however would not put me off staying again, as there may be other rooms or I shall take earplugs - shame, otherwise faultless. Breakfast box in the morning, which was to my liking.Highly recommended, especially for a lovely pub and brilliant food.

Five of us visited on Sunday 10/04/16; it started quietly, and although we were not booked in until two pm we were the only 'party' in the restaurant. We feared the worst, but the bar staff said it was just 'quiet'. Our fears were not realised. The waiting staff were eager and attentive, but not to the point of encroachment. The restaurant surroundings were to a pleasant and well maintained standard of décor, the only minus were some particularly pungent spring flowers arranged on the windowsill close by. No matter, they could be moved. As it was, others joined the restaurant soon after we had sat, so there was a convivial atmosphere, some locals in the bar added their hubbub to give a good pub feel. The food was a choice of five or 6 starters, and the same number of mains. The Vane Arms has a set menu for Sundays, so going online to view the 'usual' menu is not representative. Four of the five of us opted for the Sunday Roast beef, the other going for The Vane Arms Cheeseburger! Guess what? It was all smashing, after beautifully presented starters (garlic mushrooms, soup of the day, pate) the mains were fully up to the same high standard. To be fair we were all a bit stuffed, but we split a couple of puddings between us and they were both good - sticky toffee pudding, and a fabulous rum-n-raisin cheesecake. There was a minor wrinkle with the bill; we could see we'd been undercharged for drinks so we owned up and paid up. All in all, it was all good food; we had no complaints, and we enjoyed ourselves. Recommended.

We needed a place close to Peterborough to stay the night before my sisters wedding and found this place on booking.com and what a find it was. So well priced and the customer service is to such high standards. We arrived late, I didn't book breakfast. Was no problem the owner said he would bring us bacon sandwich's and filter coffee to our room at 9.30! What a service. The room was to high standards and homely and the staff so welcoming, chatting to us at the bar and making us feel like one of the locals. I recommend this place to anyone everyone looking to stay in the area!

We ate at the hotel and the food was delicious. Rum and raisin cheesecake to die for! Very friendly staff. We stayed overnight in the cottage annex. Clean and comfortable room, but very cold even though the weather was mild. Once we had the heater on for a few hours it warmed up somewhat. Basic room, no hairdryer, only one bedside lamp, no chairs, but adequate for one night and did contain toiletries and a good range of beverages. The walls were very thin amd we could hear everything the couple in the next room were saying, including the loud burp made by the man when they came in!! The upstairs room had very creaky floorboards too. We liked the breakfast box, which we were given the night before and which contained a continental breakfast.

We stayed for one night on Easter Sunday. The room was warm, spacious and nicely decorated, very clean and lots of hot water but the welcome in the pub was just lovely.Genuinely friendly and helpful staff who know what they are doing and obviously enjoy their job. The food was excellent - huge portions, first class ingredients cooked with sense and style,We enjoyed lunch so much we decided to spend the evening in the bar playing cards and drinking - no food on a Sunday night but the landlord was entertaining a group of locals with jambon Iberico and cheese. That's the kind of place it is - relaxed, welcoming and the ideal village local.Aaron, the landlord, couldn't have been nicer: he is a genuinely interesting man, intelligent and articulate with a real interest in food and flavour, hospitality and giving his customers the best experience possible.I get the impression he doesn't suffer fools gladly but that's the joy of running your own business and running it extremely well - you can tell the moaning fussbudgets of this world to take a hike.He recommended a local Indian restaurant to us, though I have a feeling if we'd wanted to stay for the viewing of the final episode of The Night Manager and the Spanish ham, we'd have been more than welcome.AND he got out of bed on Easter Monday to make us a full cooked breakfast although we were expecting a continental breakfast box in our room AND he was extremely forgiving when we arrived for it half and hour late AND it was one of the best cooked breakfasts I have ever had; as Aaron goes to the trouble of sourcing the best possible local ingredients in an area not known for its local produce.Plus we got to have good chat about the ups and downs of running your own business an the misery of people glued to electronic devices when they could be communicating - or playing cards. We are unlikely to be going through Northampton again anytime soon but when we do we will be visiting The Vane Arms .

Bought a flat white, usually £3.50 but they charged me £4.10!!! I checked the price and they said the reason for this was for my oat milk. So I paid 0.70p just for having oat milk. Outrageous.

We were staying down the road at the Queens head, walked down the village and popped in here for a drink, what a great friendly little pub, Brian the landlord and his mum Linda, made us very welcome, we felt like part of the local community, we enjoyed so much we went back several times during our 2 night stay, and much preferred it to the Queens head. Thank you Brian and Linda for you hospitality. Julie G Shepperton.

Most probably the best food I’ve ever had. If you are looking for a cosy pub with great food next to an open fire then you have found it. Make sure you book though as it gets very busy. Ask for Jamie and say jack sent you.
