I will still give this hotel a 5 star rating as the staff were friendly and helpful and the room was lovely. Wholehearted congratulations! To the group of circa 15 foul mouthed, rowdy, shouting, shreiking and squealing males and females that arrived at the Talbot Hotel in Malton this last Sat evening 2nd March 2024. This hotels dining room was clearly never meant to cater for a gathering of such despicably behaved and wholly selfish animals like you. My sympathies went out to the small team of dedicated staff for whom you caused a horrid display of disrespect, but also to the several tables of residential diners that these same staff had to pacify and then relocate to another dining area because of your mob handed disgraceful behavior. I can say, "All to their own" for a great night out! However your organiser must have known what sort of beer monsters they were assembling and should have sought a suitable venue rather than blatantly ruin many others. I guess in a 25-40 age bracket, you know who you are.....SHAME ON EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU!

We used to live near Oundle 25 years ago, and were looking around to find a restaurant where we could meet friends just before the Christmas break who were travelling from Northampton. When we arrived we were shown to our table, and from the almost hostile dismissive 'welcome" should have walked out there and then. In short the service was incredibly slow and poor, I ordered the blade of beef on horseradish mash with red cabbage. When it arrived I thought they had forgotten to place the beef, but on investigation I found some. It was so small I thought I had become a vegetarian without asking! My wife's was just the same. The mash was tepid, and hardly flavoursome. In all disgraceful. Our friends meal was similarly poor. Our friend ordered the cheese board. I have never seen such a rediculously small amount of chees and heavily over priced. I could go on but hope you have got the message........avoid like the plague unless you are happy to get totally ripped off for a very poor meal. To add insult to injury they even added a service charge into the bill. Honestly i have had far better meals in both quality and quantity in my mother's care home.

Terrible food. Hardly any selection. £25 for a chicken burger? I don't think so. There's more to Vegan life than Linda McCartney sausages, (£16 for the vegan meal sausage & mash!!) also would have been nice if they were cooked properly. Waiting staff failed to offer us information on the food had to get management involved. Wont be coming back to this place. Breakfast was not cooked properly and I was ill afterwards.

I’ve been frequenting the Talbot for over 12 years and the building is stunning. The location is beautiful but there are more flaws than positives of late. Staffing levels have fallen so poorly they cannot offer the service the destination requires. Went for Sunday lunch with friends yesterday. Was told there would be a 45 min wait as we had not booked, we could have a couple of drinks first, no problem. The actual wait was over 2 hours whilst the place wasn’t that busy. When the food actually arrived, my beef was so tough. It’s snapped in half and that’s not exaggeration. The owners either have to sell up or invest some money in staff numbers and training. This is the first time I’ve ever been compelled to come onto Tripadvisor, and leave a review in any shape or form. The fact this meal and drinks cost four adults and three children over £400 is a disgrace and I shouldn’t really have paid my bill for the food. This place deserves better than the current owners who should hang their heads in shame.

This hotel dates from 1626 I recall and its appeal is just that. Old and charming this is quite a grand hotel, and sits proudly in the middle of Oundle. Plenty of parking to the rear of the hotel, with good access back I to the hotel. I had a room located in an annexe and it was very nicely appointed. Breakfast was excellent in the morning.

We were staying at the hotel so decided to eat in. It is a nice room with a wonderful troupe l’oeil on the wall. It was quite busy with lots of business guys who were staying at the hotel, so there was a nice atmosphere. The food is solid 3 star hotel affair - perfect acceptable but not top class! My wife liked her pear starter and trout main. My main of a chicken pie was slightly tasteless but all sorted by adding a slug of white wine! My only suggestion is that the kitchen stick to the description - my starter of smoked mackerel pate was delicious and came with Melba toast, except it didn’t. It was served with 4 nachos. There’s no bread in nachos! I question it and was fobbed off with “I can bring you some bread if you want” - really! Anyway, minor point (although irritating) and overall we had a nice meal. With a bottle of decent white wine and a glass of red, it was under £100 which I though was good value.

We hadn't been to the Talbot for many years, so were pleasantly surprised at the changes they have made. We had a table overlooking the small garden area, which was very nice. We both had steak, which came with a good variety of accompaniments, including a lovely coleslaw. The staff were polite. The downside is that we were there for an hour and a half for a one course meal. We did look at the dessert menu, but as we had to be somewhere else, we decided nothing was tempting enough for another long wait.

We were warmly welcomed and shown to an ideal table having requested a quiet one. The hotel was busy with many eating in the bar areas. The restaurant was quite busy. The menu has a good range of dishes to suite most tastes and all at reasonable prices. We ordered 2 starters. The smoked mackerel pâté was exquisitely presented. It was very tasty and served nice and cool. The salt and pepper squid was nicely coated with a crisp batter over broad pieces of squid, very tender, tasty and a good portion size with a nice chilli oil sauce. This encouraged the comment….'best squid I’ve had in ages!' I had the pan roasted duck breast. This was beautifully presented. It was served at a correct temperature, with attractive accompanying garnish of golden beetroot and crisply fried black cabbage which complemented the duck perfectly. The breast was perfectly cooked, just rosé. I would have liked more of the redcurrant jus to give more moisture to eating the of breast. My guest had the chicken breast stuffedl with black truffle mousseline. Again, another dish demonstrating the artistic skills of the culinary team. It was declared lovely to eat but marginally over cooked and again not quite enough sauce. The food service staff were first class in all respects.

We intended to stay in Stamford to visit the famous Friday market but when we looked at hotels on Trip advisor, stumbled across the Talbot which was a little way out in Oundle. It had such excellent reviews on Trip Advisor we decided to give it a go. Even on a rainy, dark day in November, the Talbot looked impressive inside and out. Our large suite was beautiful. Situated near the historic staircase, it was tastefully decorated with a huge comfortable bed and a well lit en suite with loads of shelves and ledges for personal items a large shower/bath, soft towels and generous sized bathrobes. We had already booked an evening meal elsewhere so didn’t have a chance to sample from the dinner menu but we stayed for breakfast which was very good despite the fact all the hotel guest seemed to turn up for breakfast at the same time. All credit to the two members of staff serving on who worked incredibly hard to ensure everything ran smoothly for residents whilst servicing walk ins to the cafe. We were very pleased with our stay at the Talbot and very much look forward to staying again soon.

My husband had Mushroom Soup, very good, tasty. I had a toasted Tea Cake and Black-current jam with a pot of tea for one. What a joy when the tea came with a pretty blue and white cup and saucer, Willow Patterned Tea Pot and Milk Jug! It makes all the difference really it does. Thank you. I ordered the Tea Cake with trepidation as the last time I ordered one I was told it was the wrong time of day until a senior member of staff intervened and said it was ok.

Attended today for a birthday treat. It was mediocre at best. No choice of sandwiches as set menu, not asked about allergies, no choice of tea or coffee type just bog standard. It was nothing special and didn’t feel worth the money. Next time we would sooner patronise a local small business than a hotel that makes minimal effort. The staff were all lovely and pleasant but clearly very busy as we had to reask for our hot drinks, butter not cream, and refills of drinks. Incidentally, we did receive an apology for the chipped teapot (lid and spout) as they had run out of ‘our nice teapots’. However, chipped teapots shouldn’t be used, they should be binned!! It didn’t make us feel very valued as customers. We were clearly only worth the reject crockery.

We ate our evening meal in the well appointed restaurant, I had the Bresaola followed by the Hake and my better half the Beetroot Falafel then the mushroom Pethivier, all of which we enjoyed throroghly. We only had room to share a Ganache for dessert. Breakfast was superb too, we had some Granola followed by the Eggs Royale, with sumptuous Hollandaise sauce. We arrived and were quickly shown to our table. Soon after we were seated we were asked if we wanted tea or coffee. The hot drinks came out quickly, followed shortly after by the afternoon teas. We had pre booked our table of 7 for afternoon tea. One of those was booked as a vegetarian, her sandwiches were exactly the same as the non-vegetarians?! Nobody bothered to tell us what was on the plates, it was just plonked down and left. The coffee was the worst tasting coffee we have had in a long time, I don’t know what it was but it had a very strange weak taste. For a hotel like this we expected more unusual sandwich fillings than the usual cheese and pickle, ham and tomato, cream cheese and salmon and egg and Mayo.Another thing that is really annoying is when the crusts have been partially cut off the bread but some has been left on.....this is not an acceptable way of presenting them! The scones were nice and warm, but the little cakes were clearly bought in. Again, for a hotel like this you’d expect decent homemade cakes! We also had different cakes on some of the stands and one group of three only had 4 little cakes each not 5?! Overall it came to £112 and then they had the cheek to add 10% service charge - they hadn’t really provided a service?! So we had it removed. It’s such a shame because it’s such a lovely setting in a gorgeous town but this place really lets itself down. They had a lot of staff on but once our food came out no one asked if the food was okay or if we wanted more drinks or anything. Come on Talbot sort yourselves out.Overall a very disappointing visit and there are much better places to visit for afternoon tea/lunch/coffee/tea.

The glass on the cake display also dirty glass - sadly the attention to detail is clearly absent. The garden furniture grassed courtyard is well past its sell by date and should be replaced with some urgency umbrellas wouldn’t go amiss.

Furthermore, EACH STAGE had to be specially requested after being continuously ignored. Thus, after a long wait, we had to request service for drinks which took ages to come. Then we had to request please could we have menus which came again after a long delay. Further delays at each stage of ordering and arrival of main courses, and ordering and arrival of desserts. Each stage required stopping a passing waiter and requesting service....and then waiting and waiting.....!It was so disappointing and felt like quite hard work to obtain anything. I visit here every now and again with my family for drinks and the odd snack .The hotel is clean and the staff are very friendly and helpful my only gripe is the food menu is very strange , if you are looking for proper pub food then this isn’t the place to visit .They only do two kinds of sandwiches ham and cheese and the share menu is just a bit to minimal.whats wrong with mixed grills, bangers and mash ,and a large selection of rolls .Also when you order drinks on the Talbot App if you want a splash of soda the app says it’s free but they charge you 60p at the end or 90p for a splash of lemonade which is daylight robbery! So in all it’s not to bad but they just need to iron out a few issues to be a five star .

We ate in the dining room on our first night at the hotel. We were pleasantlysurprised at the quality and presentation of the food. We both had the sea trout served in a lovely white sauce. My wife does not like kale that was part of the meal - no problem - the chef kindly replaced it with peas. For dessert I had the rice pudding - lovely flavour and sprinkles on the top.

We stopped for a bite to eat as we've stopped here before because the hot food is very good but on this occasion we were to early for hot food (4pm) so we opted for sandwiches, we asked for the ham and mustard and cheese and chutney and 2 portions of fries, the ham didnt come with mustard but salad ???? The ham was a bit disappointing a small pre sliced piece of ham, the cheese sandwich was simply lacking in filling. 2 sandwiches plus two portions £24:50. Dont let this put you off the hot food which is very good, the service is good, and it is a lovey place to dine, but not for sandwiches, this is only our oppion.

We visited last sunday for the first time and loved it. Its the best sunday lunch we have had out since moving to northamptonshire over 2 years ago and we have tried many places. The level of customer service from the waiting staff was brilliant and the food was delicious. The bar area with open fire is really inviting. Looking forward to another visit.

I would have no hesitation recommending The Talbot to anyone planning a wedding. We just had our ceremony and celebration there and were blown away by how brilliant all the staff were. They couldn’t have been more friendly and helpful and made us feel like special guests all weekend. Add to this the excellent, efficient support from the event team during the build up and the beautifully romantic, historic setting of the building, it made for a perfect wedding!

We had been gifted a voucher to dine here We checked the menu beforehand to see if we wanted a meal or afternoon tea? Our feelings were that the prices were a tad expensive but we would wait for our visit before we formed a real opinion as perhaps the quality of the food soybean worth it.We decided on the Afternoon Cream Tea. You will need to book if you want this between 12noon-2pmThe Eatery was not very busy only two other customers. We ordered our tea and having booked earlier the sandwiches were already made despite being told we could choose when we arrive. However the fillings were acceptable but of poor quality with some crusts still remaining on the sandwichesThe selection of cakes were not special and shortage of jam and cream to accompany the sconesOur verdict was that it was not really good value for moneyOur service and waitress was attentive. The decoration of the room was lovely and wall mural interesting

Just come back from 3 nights at this lovely hotel. We were luck enough to be upgraded to one of their suites which was a real treat. Breakfast was delicious; plentiful and good quality ingredients. The dinner menu had something for everyone and the cosy bar with its log fire was a lovely place to spend an evening.

This was the third time I have stayed here. I feel like the staff always seem bothered when asked questions, give drink orders, food orders, etc. Not exactly the right attitude in my opinion. Good coffee though and the breakfast is delicious. It’s a beautiful hotel with a lot of history. First time I stayed was in the Queen of Scots room which was spacious and charming. Second stay was in a tiny little room on the ground floor, which wasn’t bad, just a little small. My third stay was in a second floor room toward the back of the hotel which was standard sized with a comfortable bed. Will stay again, it’s a good place with a couple of restaurants within walking distance.

We chose this hotel because of its location, in a delightful village and close to where our son lives. We had a two day stay and the hotel was lovely. Parts of the hotel date back to 1626, our room was spacious and immaculate. The staff were very helpful and attentive. The bar is great, with open fires, very cosy. The breakfast on both mornings was brilliant, the selection and quality were first class and again the staff could not be more helpful.

The main reason for choosing the The Talbot Hotel in Oundle ( Northamptonshire) , was that it was near both Peterborough ( Cambridgeshire) and Stamford ( Lincolnshire) , also the Nene Valley Railway - which was a great few hours of pure nostalgia, for those of us at a certain age and an adventure for the younger generation.

A landmark 17th century building in this historic town, built in part from the stones of nearby Fotheringay Castle, where Mary Queen of Scots and imprisoned and executed. Rambling extensions built over the centuries. Very well maintained. Restaurants and bars are staffed with very cordial people, interior decor is attractive, restaurants are satisfactory if not memorable. A very popular place to stay for visitors to the children boarding at Oundle School.

It's difficult to put into words how much the Talbot contributed to making our wedding the best day ever. From the very start, we were delighted with the service. The building/s and the grounds make it a great venue, lots of character and great architecture, as well as being really quirky and quaint. The food is amazing, really tasty, well presented and quite classy - not only during our wedding reception, but also whenever we've eaten at the restaurant. The rooms are good sized, with very comfortable beds - I'm not a fan of memory foam mattresses but these really were awesome! Dan and the team were great, nothing was too much, they were always there when you needed anything and they were very helpful and accomodating. Aga was great in the restaurant, she even organised a birthday cake at breakfast for my nephew, candles and all, and brought it across and sang happy birthday. We can't finish this review without mentioning Dorota... Where shall we start? Firstly, what a wonderful person, Dorota made our day so special. The care she put into every little detail ensured that everything went to plan. She coordinated the whole weekend, she knew our guests by name and greeted them on check-in. We couldn't have wished for anyone better, Dorota was really superb. We're very very impressed with the Talbot in Oundle and highly recommend it!

We only used the restaurant here so cannot really comment on the hotel but it looked very pleasant indeed including a pretty courtyard. You can sit in many different areas to eat here and there is a nice glass conservatory. We were early - 6pm -and the restaurant was not busy at that time. My husband had the fish and chips which he described as adequate but not memorable. I chose scallops with pear, watercress, pancetta and maple syrup which I topped up with some chips on the side. Only 2 medium size scallops provided for £11 which I thought expensive. However having eaten the first scallop I realised that the pancetta was missing! Only 5 incredients to remember! The waitress did take the dish back to the kitchen and pancetta was added but by the time it was cooked and returned the rest of the meal wasn't hot and the chips ditto. Also I thought the scallops were slightly undercooked as though the whole dish had been rushed, even though it was only 6pm! Bit of a disappointment.

This hotel is lovely. But this time we we’re unlucky and we’re put in a room where everybody met up for a few drinks. 2 nights out of 3 we’re bad on the Friday night there was a hen night and lots of women sat outside our bedroom window and we’re very loud until about 1 o’clock. I’m not one to spoil fun but sometimes gets a bit much when trying to sleep. That wasn’t it the following night a group of lads it started about 12 and singing football songs swearing shouting in room below then they went outside right outside bedroom window and even when windows we’re closed they were really load. This went on until 3 o’clock in the morning. They should have been moved away from other guests bedrooms by the night Porter this didn’t happen probably wasn’t his fault I would not like to move a group of drunken youths but really unfair on the other guests. I did complain the following morning and dutie manager was very nice and apologetic and knocked a night off so they couldn’t have been better it’s a pitty the people who caused the noise didn’t have any respect for anyone else at the hotel.

Stunning grade 1 listed building, sympathetically converted into a hotel. Excellent first impression, check in was very friendly and efficient, nice bar area but no TV so do not expect to be able to watch any sporting events, not that this was a problem on our visit. Downside was the overall cleanliness of the public areas which suffered from sticky tables and uncleared debris (apart from the bar which was well attended to). Staff overall were very friendly, Sunday night booking which was excellent value.

Wedding was on hottest day of year so keeping cool inside was a problem but plenty of outside areas to sit .

I met a friend for lunch at The Talbot Hotel in Oundle. I used their car park which meant a walk to the hotel reception to get a small piece of paper to put on the dashboard. I did notice two other cars that had no such parking permit however. I sat outside as it was nice and ordered a coffee. No problem. My friend arrived and we were shown to a table for two in the bar. We were given menu’s and we asked for a jug of water. From that moment on we never saw another member of staff except for a very grumpy looking bar man who kept filling a basket with bottles which was noisy and which made it difficult for us to hold a conversation. To his credit though he did ask if we were being attended to and at the time we thought we were. After 25 minutes I made my way to the kitchen door to attract attention. We gave our order finally. I ordered a ciabatta with cheese and cranberry. It was cold when it arrived and the cheese, no idea what it was but it was melted and cold. Had someone been available I would have complained, but in the end we paid, left and found somewhere much nicer for coffee. Finally, if eating on the Marie Celeste is your thing, the Talbot should suit you very well. Especially if cold melted cheese is your thing. Enjoy!!

Great service and delicious food for a mid-week supper. We ordered the pumpkin and goat cheese tart and the cassoulet-inspired chicken dish, both of which were very nice. Our children ordered items from the sharing and starters menus, which was ideal in the absence of a children’s menu. Although pricier than other meals we’ve had in the area, the setting was lovely and the servers made us feel very welcome.
