The Usk Vale in Newport

Went here for wedding reception. Buffet was ok. Mainly consisted of cold meats, salad n chips. Tables n chairs were dressed nice.

Visited 6/2, for lunch choosing Cheese & Onion Panini with salad, Cumberland Sausage Mash Peas & Gravy & Brunch. Food was very good, all 3 meals for under £28 with pints of Diet Coke @ £1 95. No desserts for us as we were full (maybe next time). One of our party walks with the aid of a arm/elbow support & staff offered the use of the side door so she did not have to use the steps. Very grateful for that but there was no disabled toilet on the premises.

1st time here in years. Staff were very friendly,polite and helpful Food was absolutely fantastic,all of my group said the same food was superb,fresh,hot and very tasty, We will be eating here again. Top notch guys great evening

Had a lovely Sunday lunch here yesterday, the food was delicious and the service good, it was quite busy the time we went but think the new owners and staff handled it brilliantly, and couldnt do enough for us. We will definitely look forward to going back for another meal soon. Looks like the Usk Vale is back on the up 👏

Had a fabulous evening celebrating my 60th birthday with family and friends . There were 35 of us and everything was excellent. Service was amazing and the food was delicious. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed . Many thanks to the staff for helping to make my birthday special x

Sunday lunch was nice. Plenty on plate.cooked nicely although veg wasnt seasoned so needed the salt and pepper. Gravy was tasty though

Food ok but not a great choice. Service was fine, they seemed like nice friendly people here but a bit more effort on appearance would be good for waiting staff. The atmosphere was poor. Not cosy and a mixed bag of tables and chairs. Could do with a few pictures on the walls a tidy up on the bar and proper menus. Also accessibility is bad, had to carry a pram up stairs to get in and elderly relative struggled a bit.

We had a very lovely meal here, food quality was spot on and the portions were huge! Prices were very reasonable. Only scored slightly lower for atmosphere, but there was only 2 tables in whilst we visited, and I think they are renovating.

Great to see the Usk Vale back open again. We had a fab meal and the staff were really welcoming Very reasonably priced too and we will definitely be going back!

Disappointing 60th Birthday (18 people). 21/07/23 Booked 2wks in advance, offered to pre order this was declined by the venue. Upon arrival, when ordering drinks at the bar we were questioned if the table booked was for a teenagers party? When ordering the majority of the party opted for starters, great price, £15 for 2 courses. The starter came out quickly and was presented well. It all went a bit downhill from there… The table was cleared and replacement cutlery was ‘dumped’ in the middle of the table. It was approx. 40mins for a few of the main courses to come out. The last member of our party received theirs 50mins after the first main was given. No member of staff asked at any point during the evening ‘if everything is ok’ surely a standard practice in the hospitality industry? We finished up with a home made Birthday cake, kindly brought out by the staff that was then presented to the wrong person. When questioned the server replied ‘no one told me who it was’. I suppose the point to make is, sadly, this venue was way out of its depth with a large party. As the only table booked eating in the venue the expectation for even average service was expected, was this too much to ask? My mother in law approached the server to express our disappointment (she was upset as she had arranged the booking) and was told ‘we had to do 18 covers’. We don’t get together as a family as often as we should, it’s such a shame our evening was tainted by poor service which most definitely could have been avoided. Edit, 23/07/23 after response from owner. I actually paid for both 2 courses me and my partner had. I think you might be getting me confused with my sister in law who did speak with you. I have not complained about your food, please re-read above. Considering 2 courses were £15 I believe what I received was satisfactory for the price. My review was simply pointing out the lack of service and attention the only party eating in your venue, on clearly a special occasion received. You should learn from conservative feedback and stop with the defensive if you wish to grown your business and support the community/Newport.

I am sitting on the fence here. Booked a table 3 weeks back and turned up 25/05 to find the restaurant in darkness, no tables set up and a distinct lack of atmosphere. On arrival I was told the kitchen was not open. The member of staff then went to speak to someone else who checked the booking and apologized for the lack of service. The chef was out dropping another MOS off and was told he would be back soon. Was offered tea/ coffee twice whilst waiting, which raised a concern. Asked if they were serving alcohol to which they said yes. We put an order in and was brought out a menu to peruse. It was a breakfast menu. Asked for the main menu that could not be found. The chef turned up and also apologised. No menu, only what was in his head. Not a lot of choice but we stuck with it. The food was tasty when served but not well presented. The chips came in a large container that we had to serve ourselves. My friend had sausage and mash and the mash came in a separate container. Only 2 items on the dessert menu. It transpires that the Usk Vale has recently been taken over, about the time of my booking. Chef said Sunday dinners are a big hit but if the presentation is anything like our meal, I would be surprised. He offered up only meat dishes, which did not capture my imagination. When I asked if he had any fish, he said No but he would source for me, which he did. I have to give him credit where it is due. I don't think they had my booking and were thinking on their feet to keep our custom. Hopefully things will get better there.

2nd time visiting the gem during mid week firstly let's talk about the pub, it has everything good sports bar a decent sized restaurant and a private function room. The new owners have set the right standards from the off and can only be on route to a prestigious pub/restaurant in the area. The food was excellent portions we're that of a typical pub gurb...large and value for money you will not be disappointed by the standards either, im a bit of a foodie and the burger delivered 10 fold.... attached a few photos good luck guys and look forward to a regular visit 👌

I love it. I've been there for the first time for a charity night and I love it. My friend organised very well. It was Murder Mistery night, was great fun and laughter. Food was ok but don't expect to much. I had a curry and fairly I can say it was ok. Generally speaking I would go again.

Dreadful experience of The Usk Vale for Sunday lunch this afternoon. We waited an hour before the mains were presented even though the starters had not even appeared before the mains arrived. The lamb was nice but let down for the slow service provided. The door leading to the smoking area was left open leaving the smell of cigarettes hitting our noses, before we could smell the food infront of us. Waitresses were polite and friendly but perhaps more training is needed from management. We will not be returning anytime soon.

Service was excellent for starters, ok for mains, but then nonexistent for desserts. Vegetarian sausages as the option for a veggie Sunday lunch were bland and disappointing.

Lovely staff but food was a big disappointment. Packet meet not what was on the menu roasted potatoes was so burnt couldn't cut them. Yorkshire pudding was over cooked & dry uneditable 😟

Absolutely lovely little place and it's gets a rare 5 STARS from myself and I'm sure from my family too. The food was excellent, all homecooked and not a microwave in sight, the staff were all super friendly and the service was great. The food took around 10-15 mins to arrive after ordering. My family went for the roast dinner with different meats, (which they all said was delicious and well cooked, I however went against the grain and went for the scampi and chips which, I have to say I don't normally do on a Sunday but I'm glad I did as it was one of the best I've had, the chips were also homemade, NOT frozen, hallelujah, a chef that can be bothered to peel a few spuds. You might say it's only a chip but that's a hard thing to get right. As a chef myself, I know what I'm looking for and It's simple food but that's often the best when done really well, as it was here. The price was more than fair too, considering how much meat we all had. Then there was the desert, we all went (6 of us) with the exception of 1, for the flake cheesecake which again, was to die for, the odd one out went for chocolate cake a custard which she said was one of the best. I have to say though, super well done to the care, love and and attention this chef and his team put into that food, what a guy. If it wasn't for my Great Uncle saying about this place we'd never have known it was there as its off the beaten path, but I'd highly recommend this place although I want to be a little selfish and save it just for myself, lol. It's a long review as it deserves it and it's not often I give 5 STARS! Well done, we'll definitely be back for years to come. Unfortunately, I was too busy eating this lovely food to take photos but I will the next time were there, which'll be very soon I'm sure.

Good wholesome food prepared in their own kitchens at really affordable prices - plenty of parking space - they still have a working mens bar, a family bar and a function room! Keen to please and have always left as a satisfied customer!

The restaurant is a bit plain but the food was excellent two courses £10.95 three£14.90. good quality, good portion sizes I had 4 lamb cutlets in minted gravy fantastic. We are going back.

Oooh I love this place. Has a good sized function room where we hold our annual WI Christmas party. Food is amazing...procecco is even better.

Wonderful food and fabulous service X used the function room for large parties which was Cold when we went in but soon warmed up with 3 large parties in there. Food was piping hot and lots of it and the waitresses came around to ask if we needed to anything else. Would highly recommend.

This is a gem in Malpas. The place is very ordinary but the food over the past year has been great. We usually eat there Monday or Tuesday and early from the specials menu. The soups are some of the best I have tasted and the presentation is good. Warm bread roll with butter and croûtons in the soup. One of my favourite dishes is chicken curry half and half which is usually more than I can eat. Other specials include fish, chicken, pork and Lasagne. There is also beef and beer pie which is the best I have ever had☺ Booking is a good idea but leave room for us! They also have a function room which is ideal for weddings etc in fact our reception was there 24 years ago! There is a quiz night on Mondays
