The Upton Tavern in Halton

We went to the Tavern at lunchtime Golden Oldies afternoon. We had the turkey roast, delicious! The carrot cake with cream was delicious too - would recommend! The singer Danny King could make that guitar of his sing too, great afternoon enjoyed by all twelve of us.

Never been dissapointed with food in the Tavern but we went on Easter Sunday and have got to say I was very dissapointed I chose the lamb roast which I have had before and it was always lovely but mythos time it was just tasteless and couldn't eat the lamb it was so tough I brought it home for the dog also the service was very slow so 5hink I will wait a while before I go again

My daughter purchased afternoon tea with Prosecco as a Christmas present through Groupon. We visited today well what a lovely experience well worth the money. Variety of fresh sandwiches,warm sausage rolls, warm fruit scones with jam/cream then the best selection of cakes/fruit I have ever seen on afternoon tea. We will definitely be back

Bottomless brunch booked for hubby's birthday, absolutely brilliant value, food was delicious , cocktails were gorgeous, freshly made to order, staff were very attentive even though the restaurant was very busy, waited no more than a couple of minutes for our drinks to be replenished, can't fault anything about our afternoon. Thank you for a lovely experience!

Had a lovely lunch today I went with friends for a belated Christmas meal.. we all had sea bass which was absolutely delicious, followed by lemon meringue pie… couldn’t fault the food or the service the staff where very attentive and friendly Great place to eat

Once again another wonderful lunch time spent in this wonderful friendly place food as ever amazing will be back many times such a GEM what a find keep it up all you wonderful staff nothing is to much trouble and made to feel so welcome home from home

Lovely afternoon tea at The Tavern. Everything was presented with a festive twist and there were more than enough sandwiches and cakes for 2. Sausage roll, mince pie and macaroons were also added. Nice staff and good atmosphere. Thank you

Had an afternoon tea with groupon and it was delicious. There were plenty of sandwiches and the lemon sponge was incredible light and airy - very filling. They topped up the tea when we ran out. The restaurant food looked delicious and was reasonably priced.

Very disappointed with our visit. We ordered 5 large English breakfast and 1 small. We had to send 3 of them back as they were cold, the other 3 were cold but they still ate them. The ones we sent back were 2 large and a small one we got 3 small ones to replace them, but we still paid for large. We will not be returing any day soon.

Walked in this morning for a full breakfast nice and quite got served straight away didn’t wait long before full breakfast arrived hot fresh up of tea excellent service would visit again soon thank you for the service

Booked the tavern for my daughters 18th birthday for 15 of us and can't rate the experience highly enough.The girls looked after us and nothing was any trouble.The food was delicious and all brought out at the same time.Thanks to the chef and all the girls who looked after us and making it a memorable afternoon

Tried the Upton Tavern for mums birthday. Food stunning, atmosphere great and service fantastic. Bit pricey but suppose you pay for what you get!! Will be returning soon.

Arrived just after midday and place almost empty ... Despite that, had to wait ages for our order to be taken and then an equally long wait for food to arrive! Two of our party ordered the "pie of the day" which turned out to be a soggy pastry pie, swimming in watery gravy, accompanied by chips which seemed to have been warmed up from the previous day. The other meals were acceptable (just about okay but not great). What's happened to this place? The meals used to be lovely but this is our second visit recently where the food has been disgusting and, frankly, a waste of money. Won't be going there again.

Excellent staff let down by the food. Chicken was tough and overcooked and the carbonarar was gr easy. Even the ice cream felt as though it had ice in it. Would not go again.

Me and my friend went here the other night for food and drinks. The food was really really good, the menu was top notch. The food arrived in a timely fashion and the girls who were serving were all brilliant ! After our meal we took part in the quiz which was really fun. Definitely the best pub in widnes by a clear clear mile. We will definitely be coming back.

We had a roast dinner in December which was nice tasted but almost cold. The prawn cocktail starter was way too peppery too which was weird. In January our large party ate there on the Winter Menu and all enjoyed our food. So I'm averaging the score as 4*. Hope to go back and try it again.

Been to the tavern before and it was exceptional this time not many people in waited ages for food and was so looking forward to the fish and chips as its normal beautiful . It wasn't hot and nowhere near its normal standard . I was so hungry otherwise I would have sent it back . Will try again in the future as the tavern is a lovely place

We wanted a relaxing lunch with my elderly father in law at short notice and he booked the 3 of us a table. We had a pretty perfect experience. The service was friendly and efficient. We didn't feel rushed nor like we had to wait too long on what was a very busy day. The food was a revelation: well presented, tasty starters all round, very good fish and chips and excellent home made proper pie. We didn't have room for pudding but the coffee was good and served with a mint chocolate. Thank you very much to all involved for an excellent experience. We look forward to our next visit.

Disappointed we had a lovely meal last year this year it was disappointing. The place was cold ok it had just opened but still chilly . Food just not that good . Beef gravy on a turkey dinner . No sprout hardly any carrots a pile of red cabbage . Staff not great very young could do with some fine tuning had to ask all the time for everything.

Came here with a large group for a Xmas night out, the quality of the food was excellent and the service was great. The only thing that could have been improved was more staff on at the bar.

Had a belated birthday lunch with my friend yesterday , the whole experience was just wonderful from the moment we walked in Louise and Taylor welcomed us and were so attentive and friendly nothing was too munch trouble for them And they both really engaged in conversation with us and this really stood out from other places we have eaten Our food was delicious , we shared a starter of halumi fries , and we chose sweet chilli chicken and a chicken and mushroom pie , both were served with salad and fries , the pie was home made and it was packed full of chicken and the pastry was light and crispy , we both chose the sticky toffee pudding and it was one of the best I’ve ever tasted the chefs at the pubs do such a great job , there was no rush between courses so we had plenty of time for a catch up I e mailed the pub last night to say how delighted I was with the whole experience, and Lee the manager took the time to reply right away to thank me for taking the time to share my thoughts I would recommend eating at the Tavern and my family and I will,be going back there in the next few days Thanks so much to the team at the tavern See you soon Barb Robson

Very good meal in the restaurant section of this bustling local pub. Sirloin steak was really excellent quality and cooked perfectly. Good wine choice and pleasant service.

Interbally pub is good and has a pleasant enviornmnet. Had a family meal. Unimpressed with the quality and presentation. No tomato/ mushroom with gammon, veg was a pot of garden peas, chips looked like someone had stood on them before serving. Would not visit again.

Ordered the Tavern Full English. This has got to be the best breakfast ever. Cooked to perfection and not at all greasy. Free coffee too which was really good quality. Top marks to the chef. Only downside to this supposedly COVID-19 secure visit was when I paid by card the waitress took my card from me to insert it, I entered my pin and again she handled my card. This is completely unnecessary and there is no need for anyone to touch my card. I’m still giving 5 stars though as the breakfast was perfect. (Staff just need a bit of training).

Chose the tavern today for lunch to support a local business. We had a lovely meal and a young man and lady served us who were friendly and helpful. However when it was time to leave I got up to ask for the bill. A young girl brought over the bill without speaking. She then stood by the table with the card machine still not speaking to us. We paid contactless and then she walked away - again not speaking or giving us a receipt! As we left she was at the bar so we politely asked if we could have the card receipt, she turned away got a receipt and passed it over. We couldn't believe that she hadn't spoken a word to us..no apology/how was your meal /thank you etc. (name on receipt was Emily)A disappointing end to an otherwise lovely lunch

Absolutely ashamed to say I live in the same town as this pub. My food was cold and disgusting, I went the toilet and there were 3 lads taking drugs without a care in the world, I told the doorlad who was a lad he looked as though he'd come straight from school and he wasn't interested one bit he even let on to the lads as they came out of the toilets. The whole place has gone down hill since I last went at Christmas

This is a great pub to drink or eat in, its nicely decorated and the food and drink is spot on.Earlier in the year we had a family party here and it went so well we booked my mothers weddinging reception! The food was all tasty and well presented, the staff did everything they could to make the day run smoothly and the the room was lovely.Very happy all round.

Dined here with the Eat Out offer so knew it would be busy and didn’t have high expectations. More than pleasantly surprised, food was amazing but the service was excellent. Staff so attentive especially with our son, made our evening, thank you!

The restaurant was busy when we arrived, and our table was ready for us. Plenty of hand sanitisers around the rooms. However there were cards on the table saying who would be using it throughout the day, it was natural to pick them up, which could help spread the virus if an infected person had touched them before you.The food was mainly fine, although my granddaughter couldn’t eat her popcorn chicken, too tough. Me and my wife have been visiting the tavern for many years , every time time we have eaten there the food and the service have been first class,the choice of menu is varied and something for everyone , we had the Chinese sharing platter to start with and I had chicken hanging skewer for my main course and my wife had the tai green curry , really tasty and piping hot , thank you for a lovely night

Visited with family and decided to have the sweet chilli chicken. Family said before pandemic it was a lovely meal, however now it’s not great, posh McDonald’s french fries and a salty chicken. Ok we did have our meal late, but shouldn’t meals be as good no matter what time. So I took it as if you book a later table, your meal won’t be to the same standard

Four of us went to the Upton Tavern for tea on Thursday night, 3 out of 4 meals were nice however the steak was overcooked. The pub was really busy, busier than we expected for a Thursday. Our biggest issue was that NONE of the staff wore face shields or masks and didn’t keep their distance from the tables at all. Also once we were finished some of the cutlery on our table hadn’t been used, instead of taking it into the kitchen to be washed it got out straight back into the cutlery draw. To say the hygiene measures were worrying in these current times is an understatement. We have been loads to the Upton Tavern and have always enjoyed our visits, however I don’t currently feel that their safety measures or lack off our upto standard and are putting their diners and staff at risk. We will not be returning.

The staff were all attentive and friendly enough. However, we chose the special 'Eat Out to Help Out' scheme menu. The main meals on this seemed like pretty small portion sizes compared to standard menu options that others around ordered, so I would recommend choosing things from the standard menu if visiting soon.We were also a bit surprised about how close the staff (all without masks or visors) got compared to other restaurants and bars we had been to recently.

We came for a family meal tonight and I was blown away by the quality of the food. Four adults and a toddler visited and we had starters and mains. Fishcakes, halloumi bites and chicken satay skewers to start, all hot, well presented and tasty. Mains were chicken hanging skewers, beef skewers, children's spaghetti carbonara and fillet steak. We were all in agreement that the meals were excellent. My dad who ordered steak is a butcher of 40 years and has very high standards when it comes to meat and he said it is the best steak he has ever had in a restaurant. For me the skewers were so tasty and plentiful that i didnt even need the chips and tortilla that it was served with. We will be back again and again. Highly recommended.

Really impressed with the measures Lee, Sean and the team have put into place since reopening making for a great night celebrating my daughter’s 18th. Food and drinks were excellent. We had the sirloin steak, seabass and chicken skewers - all delicious 😋

First night out after “ lockdown “. Tea time meal with the wife and we couldn’t of been happier. I’m not usually a red meat person but we Both got the fillet steak, what a decision. Cooked to perfection and quite simply delicious, well worth the money and 10/10 for their efforts at social distance, cleanliness and overall efforts. Will definitely be back

Lovely restaurant, very friendly restaurant staff, food is very nice and atmosphere is good. My only complaint would be to switch some of the TVs off, especially in the middle of the day when the pub is sometimes half empty. Luckily in most of the (small) restaurant part TVs are not visible unless you are nearer the pub end. It’s such a shame that, with so much land, the restaurant can’t be extended.

New to area and called in it was very busy but got a table for 4 straight away. Staff were attentive and food was delicious not what we were expecting. We all felt quite at home and have decided it will now be our local well done guys xx

Amazing food and service. This is one of the best pubs around. Definitely worth a visit. The management of this establishment are doing a fantastic job, if only other pubs in the area were half as good.

Visited here for my friends 18th, the buffet was amazing I mean not all the food was to my liking but I throughly enjoyed it! Only negatives are that the drinks are quite expensive and the £10 minimum card payment is a bit ridiculous for such a modern upmarket pub. Also the use of paper straws I don’t see why they can’t get the biodegradable ones made from plant starch like The Observatory and The Dandelion Tavern do Excellent bar service from Alex and Amelia as usual will definitely be returning and would recommend.

Treated my mum to afternoon tea here last week and was blown away.. I didn’t even know this place existed, such a great find! I purchased a voucher off groupon but would happily pay full price, I emailed them beforehand as I’m vegetarian and they had no problems with that. Gorgeous place, very friendly and helpful staff and most importantly the food was AMAZING!!

I can not fault this place! We have been here as a family for a meal and it was lovely the food was the best I've had for a while and the staff are lovely they couldn't do enough for you. I have also been a number of times over the Christmas period. Visited on the off chance and also had booths hired. The prices of the booths are brilliant for what you get there is always a good presence in there and always seems to be busy. Well done to all that work there!!

Myself and my mum love to eating out here, we visited over Christmas, and loved the set Christmas menu, but like to book in as often as we can. The meals are delicious, good value and the atmosphere is great. We don’t live in the area so make a special journey to eat here. A hidden gem well worth a visit.
