We found this pub by chance whilst visiting Ambleside and what a find! We were instantly provided with a warm welcome. A dog friendly pub with friendly, helpful staff, good selection of cider and tasty home cooked food. The staff were pleasant and made us feel very welcome despite it being our first visit. We were looking for a small bite to eat so opted for small plates. Delicious gravy with roasties and Yorkshire puddings, all home cooked and tasty, we would have certainly opted for the full roast dinner had we not had a big breakfast. Our arrival was welcoming which equally matched our departure. It felt as though their sentiments were genuine, which was touching. A great traditional pub, hope to return, thank you!

Really enjoyed the valentines menu, freshly prepared, not the usually "out of a bag or box stuff" you often get at pub chains. Friendly barman, happy in his work, good selection of beers. Reasonably priced menu for the quality on offer. Dog friendly, bonus.

We’re having a week in Ambleside and after discovering the Unicorn on Saturday night we’ve been back every day since. Each time we’ve had a warm welcome from all the staff including Mimi who has been so welcoming and friendly everyday. In fact after our walk everyday we really look forward to going to the Unicorn to see Mimi and the locals in there. After a few days we already feel like regulars here and part of the furniture. The locals are friendly here too and it’s just like a proper friendly local pub with good craic and banter every visit. Whenever we return to Ambleside we will definitely put the Unicorn at the top of our list to visit.

Pints, fires, dogs, pork scratching, every table full of happy folk, it’s just how a pub should be. Even a front door that doesn’t shut properly meaning there’s a draught no one inside likes, the ones who leave it open upon arrival are blissfully unaware and the poor sods at the table closest have the thankless task of shutting each time but take up the role with a selfless duty to others, smiling and laughing at their miss fortune.

Worst Sunday dinner ever. 50% of the beef was gristle and inedible, had to ask for steak knife to cut gristle off. Roast potatoes were rock hard. Waitress was lovely and apologised, and offered our drinks free. Website stated 2 courses for £18.95 we were never offered two courses and had to pay £17.95 each for one course which was disgusting for what we were served. Apparently the previous owners have not given them the rights to the website so the details on the website are absolute. Also we were never given a menu detailing prices. Very very disappointing and I would NEVER visit this pub again.

Visited the Unicorn on a Sunday evening, after pre booking. Mimi very nice and helpful but not only was it decided to close at 8.00 but only Sunday lunch was offered- one course and no price list. Please note any information regarding pricing on website relates to previous owners and is well out of date. One course is in fact £17.95, not the £18.95 for two courses quoted on the website. The actual meal was the worst Sunday lunch we have ever had and it was only possible to eat much of it with the aid of a steak knife, normal knives failing to get through the fat and gristle. Roast potatoes were so hard they must have been held over from lunch time. We were given a round of drinks to compensate us for the poor meal but this did not really compensate us fairly for a very substandard meal which spoilt our first night in Ambleside. We will not be back

Liked it in here and the beer was lovely. Helles on tap. The only thing I didn't like was dog mess on the floor as we walked in. There was a young lass serving on her own and was struggling to keep up. We picked up the dog mess and moved it before someone trod on it and stank the place out. I think it was the dog that belonged to the pub. The only reason I dropped a star. Other than this, all was good

Unicorn really needs to get involved with the parking pass system. Many hotels and even restaurants provide parking passes to their guests. So it was quite expensive to spend 2 days here. We were given the smallest room and told 'we didn't pay enough' for a larger room. When we booked on booking.com there was no choice, we just booked A room! The wine provided was nice and there was a kettle with some beverage selections. The separate bathroom was perfect. The unicorn is in a great location, easy walking to anywhere in town. It would be great if they could find how to incorporate breakfast for the guests as well like most places in England. A grab-and-go or a continental breakfast is not difficult. Photos are from nearby. Ambleside is beautiful but very crowded. Loved Bea, the little dog at the hotel!

Very happy I took a chance and asked whether they had a room for the night. The landlady, Camille, was lovely and offered me a more than fair rate. Comfy room and a good shower, also quiet given it’s a pub. Speaking of which, the cider (Weston’s) was excellent, and although I can’t speak for the beer, all those drinking it seemed more than happy with it. Sadly the kitchen was closed that night, and no doubt I missed out - but I’m sure that would be good value for money too. All in all, a great option if you’re passing through Ambleside and want solid accommodation at fair prices above a good old fashioned pub.

We used the upstairs cafe. Although it was busy the service was good and the soup was excellent. Gluten free options available if you're Coeliac.
