Brown Sugar in South Lakeland

The main meal was fantastic, but the service was awful. We were never got asked if we wanted a receipt, and right when we entered the restaurant, it didn’t feel welcoming at all.

I visited brown sugar twice on our trip to the lakes. Both times the building was busy with a nice atmosphere. Very quirky and the staff members are friendly, as it was over the Christmas period it was very busy both occasions but food came quickly and was to a really great standard

Just drinks for us (it happens). Great pint of Mahou and a large (obviously) Provence Rose for GF helped us move on to excellent margaritas and even better espresso martinis. As well as fantastic and friendly service from my fellow. North-Easterner it was great to see how well he worked with his Manager. Both very welcoming to everybody who came. Prices a bit above average. Dog-friendly even for young pooches like our own who sleep, bark and demand attention, usually in the same minute! They are allowed downstairs and on the outdoor patio but not upstairs and the terrace.

The staff were very welcoming, the cafe was beautifully decorated and created a wonderful atmosphere. We were there for coffee & cake. The coffee was delicious, and the cakes were very tasty. Would definitely recommend.

We arrived New Year’s Eve with no reservation as a group of 5 very wet people and a dog to be greeted with no problem at all. We were seated upstairs and the food we ordered was fabulous. They happily swapped chips for an amazing salad to accompany 2 of the meals. The sauce came in little jam jars which the girls loved. The music play list was excellent. Would definitely return

After a wasted time in Ambleside (busy weekend, pouring rain), my wife, dog, and I decided to try Windermere (to get something to eat). We found Brown Sugar, where we could sit with our dog (ground floor only, which wasn't an issue). The menu had few vegetarian options (not all marked so slightly confusing). The food was tasty, and the portions were much bigger than expected. The music wasn't too loud, the toilets were acceptable, and the bartender was extremely friendly. Thank you; we wasted too much time trying to find a dog-friendly place in Ambleside.

We had 2 drinks there.They were so rude and unfriendly with those people,whom didn't want any food.It wasn't a busy hour,we didn't hold the table back for a long time... The waiter didn't even know how to say hi or thank you... We had to wait a lot till we got our drinks. It was our first and last visit.

Coffee was cold. Food was nice but missing a little something. I had flatbread and it needed balsamic. And garlic butter was used on chip butty. Would have been better with normal butter. . Place looked great and bar staff very friendly. Cakes looked incredible.

The soure dough bread sandwiches were nice and filling. Good portion of chips. Just let down by the 1/2 hr for food to arrive.

We went this place for a Christmas lunch, and we had a very good experience and tasty food. We tried the duck, the soup, and a salad, all very good. They had Christmas decorations and music, the waiter was kind and we felt very good.

We had such a lovely dinner here today! The food was absolutely delicious, and every bite felt like it was made with love. The atmosphere was cozy, but what made our experience truly special was our waiter – so friendly, lovely, and full of energy! Their warm personality and cheerful service made our evening even more delightful. Highly recommend this place for a wonderful dining experience!

Sorry to say but the food was dreadful . Much of the food was greasy or cold . My wife’s Terriaci chicken had totally cold garlic pitta bread on the plate . My seafood pizza was very poor and unseasoned . The calamari starter was very greasy . The venue was lovely and beautifully seasonal . The service was good and barman was perfect and very polite . Our only issue was the chef . The calamari was battered and greasy not breaded . The fish added to the pizza was dry and tasteless. Sorry to be so negative.

Me and my wife went in tonight with our 2 dogs, the food & service was great and the fillet steak was the best washed down with a few pints of Stout. Highly recommend. Thanks.

Nice view of Windermere. Recommend to chillax at the terrace on a sunny day. I ordered cheese fondue with mussles and white wine sauce! The food was great but it was a little bit too slow not sure it was because I visited on the weekday. The cocktail and juice were lovely and refreshing. Overall it’s worth spending

Great place for pint and some grub

We stumbled in here after not anticipating that a lot of the other restaurants in Windermere would be shut on a Monday- and we’re so glad we did!!! Staff were friendly and food was delicious. Really generous portions of moules mariniere and a seafood pizza with mountains of cheese. Would definitely recommend.

We visited here recently whilst on a night out in Windermere. I'd say it was totally average. The drinks were expensive and I think they got a bit confused with the decor. None of it makes sense. There are art deco features, circus themed lights and industrial features but none of it gels. I think they just threw up all the things they liked and hoped for the best. The food was also really expensive (£6.95 for a bowl of chips. Didn't eat so can't comment) and all the Xmas decorations around the place at the moment are cheap tat. It's just another one of those pretentious bars but their vision hasn't been realised.

Decided to dine at Brown Sugar after checking out their menu on their website. When we arrived we were escorted to our table and given the food and drink menu's. The food menu was nothing like the menu advertised on their website. The prices were inflated and most of the choices were totally different. So we ended up paying far more than we budgeted for and didn't get to eat the food we anticipating ordering

Props to our server Michael, top man and made us both feel very welcome. Food was spot on and the best we have had whilst staying in Windermere. Would recommend to anybody! Couldn’t thank them enough for their hospitality!

We went to this restaurant for dinner and brought a takeout soup with us. After sitting upstairs, no one informed us we couldn’t consume it there, and the waitstaff were all friendly—until a tall, slim white male server (I’m unsure if he’s a manager) came upstairs to serve drinks. He very rudely told us we couldn’t have the soup and continued to remind us each time he passed our table. At one point, he even stood at the stairs, staring at us, and directly said, “Stop drinking the soup!” He instructed a female server to keep an eye on us as well. I was baffled and angry by his behavior, especially since he warmly greeted every other customer, all of whom happened to be white, while pointedly ignoring us and avoiding eye contact when we left. The food was great, and the other servers, especially a particular female server, were very kind. However, this man’s attitude ruined our evening.

Absolutely brilliant place. My partner and I went in on a whim for dinner while we were in windermere for just the weekend. It was our only meal out while we were there and we couldn't have chosen a better place. The food was delicious and the staff were outstanding. We were taken to our table by a very enthusiastic vampire who even pulled out a seat for me and the rest of the evening we were looked after by a lovely zombie who entertained us with some singing and jokes as he was working. All the staff were very lovely and it was a brilliant overall experience will definitely visit again if we're ever back in windermere.

Ridiculously expensive and weird staff drinking alcohol on shift? Do not recommend.

I’ve been in the local area for a few days and came across Brown Sugar, initially went in for a coffee and had one of their scones, they’re massive. I saw the food coming out to others and it all looked great so called back in a few days after to have a late lunch. We had the fish finger on sour dough and the pigs in blankets on sour dough. These came with chips in a wire basket. It was delicious. Took a coffee and cake to take away. The portions are generous, our takeaway cake was Rocky Road, we actually cut it into 4 it was that big. Worth a visit if you’re in the area.

The place stunk and could do with a good clean when we arrived the waiter couldn’t be bothered to show us to our table he just pointed at the CCTV monitor and said that’s your table there. When we sat down the plates on the table were dirty and the menus were filthy so we decided to leave before ordering anything. If you can’t even do the basics of wiping your menus and making sure the cutlery and plates are clean then alarm bells are ringing. It’s basic hygiene. And as for there reaction to this comment Its not fabricated I was there last night the place is filthy.

Wonderful atmosphere and fab staff. So happy with the selection of food. We only had hot drinks and cake but everything was delicious and better than we were expecting.

Just spent a delightful hour in Brown Sugar in Windermere. Wonderful lemon meringue pie and rocky road cakes, lovely coffees and the best Earl Grey tea ever. Great atmosphere and super staff.The perfect end to our holiday. We will be back one day!

Very friendly staff and quick service

We ate yesterday I had the beef burger which was lovely and quite the task to eat. My friend has the carbonara which looked brilliant and was told it tasted great.

Spent 2 weeks in Windermere recently with my wife and daughter (and a well behaved Dachshund, sometimes!). Fair to say that Brown Sugar was the place to be because of David and Alan. So hard working and friendly (as all the staff were to be fair). Such a big asset to the place and they should be recognised as such. Caps off to the chef also. Food was fab. Special mention to David who made our visit such a laugh and so enjoyable. Was rather sad to leave to go home. A few hugs with David were in order. Thank you.

I recently visited Brown Sugar bar restaurant while on a trip to the Lake District with my girlfriend. The venue itself is stylish, offering a great selection of drinks, including our favorite gin, Monkey 47. The atmosphere was pleasant, and my girlfriend especially enjoyed the food, particularly the truffle chips. However, the service left much to be desired. On our first visit, the manager (or head waiter, it's unclear) was not very friendly or accommodating. We asked if he could turn on the outdoor heaters, but he gave an odd excuse as to why it wasn’t possible, despite having heaters available. This meant we had to sit outside in the cold. we returned the next day because my girlfriend loved the food. This time, the manager seated us in an isolated corner on the top floor, even though there were many available tables. It felt uncomfortable and gave me the sense that we were being treated differently, possibly due to our accents or appearance. The attitude was unprofessional and made us feel unwelcome. At the end of the evening, we ordered some chips to take away. When I asked for a takeaway bag, the manager rudely refused, claiming that they don’t keep bags, without any apology or politeness. Overall, while the place is great in terms of drinks, food, and ambiance, the attitude and lack of professionalism from the manager significantly affected our experience. Unfortunately, it’s not a place I’d be eager to return to.

Not very friendly welcome on arrival. We ordered a gin tonic and a martini and a baked potato with parmesan and truffle. The martini was ok but the gin tonic was missing the gin (it was there but didn't taste like the usual) The chips came with emental cheese instead of parmesan and tasted like a cheese ball. In the middle of our meal the waitress arrived with the credit card terminal which I thought was not very elegant, we felt like we didn't want to pay. The place is beautiful and clean and you can't complain about that, but the kitchen (we only ordered one thing which was basic and if it wasn't done properly you can't really expect the rest of the food to be perfect) the service could do with some improvement.

We only had a coffee, around lunchtime. The fa t they were still collecting cocktail glasses from the night before dissuaded us from ordering anything else. Probably buzzes at night.

Good food. The sausage barm was particularly good. The male toilets; however, didn’t have a seat. Not very demure.

A 5 star experience! We visited Lake District and wanted some place casual. Brown sugar popped up so we went for it. We ordered drinks and loaded chips and it was *chefs kiss 🤌🏽 they know what they’re doing with those chips. Shoutout to Dave for making our experience top quality - he was really attentive throughout our time there and just made our experience so warm and inviting! The atmosphere is nice too - not too loud or noisy. Not sure if they like to decorate seasonally but the whole restaurant was decorated with an autumn theme - was a nice touch. Overall, we recommend this place if you’re visiting Lake District 😌

I'd like to rate the service however I didn't actually get served, despite going to the bar to order as we were sat outside. Got ignored for a few minutes, then another customer turned up and the barman got asked to "serve the pretty lady", barman was rude to her. After that I continued to get ignored for a few more minutes before I went down the road to another coffee shop.

Been to Windermere so many times brown sugar is by far the best bar. David the waiter makes the experience even better, so friendly and nothing is too much bother, we can’t wait to return

The server was rude before we even sat down. Walked in and upstairs as the balcony seating looked nice, was asked "if we're just walking around", I said we're looking for a table to sit at and he said "usually people would ask". Made us feel very unwelcome. Didn't think we needed to ask for permission to sit down as the couple in front didnt, many tables were free, and there were no signs indicating to wait to be seated. Great place to go if you want snarky comments from a "quirky" waiter or if you're clairvoyant and can understand the unwritten rules. I'll happily take a joke, but for someone to make that comment then walk off, why would I want to spend any money there? Their responses to other reviews highlights their attitude. Save your time and try somewhere else first.

Had given up going to Brown Sugar as the staff were unhelpful and unfriendly. Decided to try it again today and what a difference! Great guy behind the bar who lifted the atmosphere of the whole place!! It had a major renovation a while ago and the place looks great, but without good staff it was a bit of a waste of time - the atmosphere is now transformed, so if you've had the same experience and given up on it, give it another go!!

Delicious food. We came here for breakfast and had a lovely time. What made it even better were the friendly and quirky staff working. Great bunch of guys. Highly recommend a visit.

We stayed in windermere over the weekend, and have to say Allan behind the bar is an absolute assert to the place. I've never seen a bar man move so quick. Drinks were ordered and made quickly, and he always had a smile on his face. I will definitely visit again when I'm back down.

More of a basic place to eat in my opinion but it was great for the price and the food I had was very tasty. I’m not sure if he’s the owner but there was a man in a suit and he was very friendly, seems like a sweet man. I think he works very hard, he looked busy the whole time we were there. I’d definitely recommend to come here for some breakfast. Nice cosy atmosphere! Great escape from the British rain. Thanks for having us~

Couldn’t review the food as we didn’t get that far. Extremely poor mannered workers here. Literally had to walk out because of the rudeness we experienced. Avoid at all costs!

The table was sticky and dirty. The vegan breakfast was not good at all, especially the warm smashed avocado. I almost did not touch my food. I hope this negative experience is an isolated incident as the waiters there were nice.

5 stars all round for food service and atmosphere. We had the best evening food was the nicest we have ever tasted 😋 a big shout out to David for completing the evening with his outstanding personality making us laugh from start to finish and ensuring we had everything we needed.We definitely will be returning and would highly recommend. As the stars say... It's ok. It looks really fancy and is in a good location, ideal for people watching or seeing the world pass by. Service was very slow, nearly 30 minutes to bring out a coffee and orange juice! The food was ok but it definitely isn't anything special. It was fairly reasonably priced for the area, but it definitely doesn't deserve the hype it gets.

Stopped here for refreshments whilst in Windermere. Didn't have that comfortable feel, had to wait quite a while for coffee, cake. I would not recommend it.

Very friendly and helpful staff. We on hoils. We wanted somewhere to eat. Bar manager was very helpful got us a table upstairs. My friend had wasn't feeling 100% He had a look see if he had paracetamol tablets but he didn't he told where nearest shop was. Food was lovely I had the three pigs lovely amazing. Very disappointed We visited at the weekend we had booked a table outside as the weather was good on arrival our table had been given to someone else We sat inside where it was quite warm the air conditioning was not on even though staff members were complaining I spoke to the manager Alan who I found to be rude and not interested in my complaints I honestly believe hospitality is not for him his attitude was shocking The only good thing about our experience was one member of staff who actually tried his best to ease the situation David went out of his way checking we were happy with our food and drink he definitely is a people person and a credit to the restaurant Would we return not if Adam is still running the restaurant and it’s a shame as we own a holiday home in Windermere and spend most weekends there

Went here twice for breakfast while we were in Windermere. Great food. Had full English, bacon and egg on sourdough, sausage on sourdough. All very tasty and filling, just what you need for breakfast.

Just popped in for a drink, Prosecco was great as was the Camden IPA. Checked out the menu and could not resist the baked Camembert - perfect. The service was spot on - even turned the volume down!

Coffee was nice when it eventually arrived but some items were missed and took ages for them to be brought out, had to go inside to get them myself, they really need to sort out the service!!

Food was fine, good sized portion. However, the manager (Monday 19th), spoke to his staff in a poor and disrespectful manner. Use of foul language etc. We ordered are drinks within 2 minutes of sitting down, they did not arrive until we had finished our meal.. approx half an hour! Trying to get someone’s attention to ask where our drinks were was impossible. Overall, I would not come back due to the service and overall atmosphere in the establishment.
