My son and finance had their wedding reception at The Townhouse Alresford. Communication with Elle was excellent and the team were very accommodating. They placed the cake, photos, flowers and name plaques out on the tables, so everything was ready when we arrived. We were met by Elle and Seb with welcome drinks and guests were able to mingle in the gorgeous garden before sitting down to a three course meal. The atmosphere was relaxed and the food was excellent. I would definitely recommend The Townhouse for a wedding reception.

What a fantastic space! We spent the morning using the coworking facilities upstairs - really lovely decor, comfy but practical seating, and very fast internet. The coffees were great; the service even moreso - so friendly and welcoming. We then had lunch - the restaurant area past the bar is a beautiful, light-filled room (very tempting to settle in for an afternoon of delicious cocktails). The food was cracking - burger and steak both cooked perfectly - and again the service was outstanding. Will definitely be returning.

Had another fabulous experience at Alresford shining light of a venue. What a treat it is to have unbelievable top end food from a family who know how hospitality should be. Dissapointing. The food was OK, but the restaurant was dirty, with crumbs all over the table and squished food from a previous diner on the floor. The place lacked atmosphere and the staff just seemed to be going through the motions.

Such a shame this place is not better. 7pm meal on a Friday and only 3 other tables occupied. By the time we left, just one other table for food and a couple of miserable looking people at the bar. The meal was actually really good and an amazing espresso martini to finish. The service was not up to standard. Seating not super comfy and layout does not add anything to the intimacy. Needs some big pot plants or screens to break the space up a little and some moderate live music would help. Prices are high. Pizza over 15 pounds. Meal for two, two course with wine and a cocktail nearly £200. Price things more reasonably, fill more seats, get more atmosphere and you'll make more money...simples

I would strongly advise against eating here if you have allergies. I recently had a birthday meal here and two coeliac members of the group were extremely ill after their meal. The severity of their reaction clearly indicates that they both consumed a significant amount of gluten, rather than trace amounts caused by cross contamination (which cannot always be avoided). Throughout the evening there were multiple communication issues surrounding allergens, including dishes on the menu being incorrectly labelled as gluten-free. When we wrote to the restaurant afterwards to explain what had happened (with the hope that they would change some of their procedures in the future), they denied serving gluten to the coeliac guests and claimed that it could only have been caused by cross contamination, which we had already made clear was absolutely not the case. Since writing back to explain the severity of the situation for a second time, they have completely ignored us. I have never experienced such poor customer service, and I have never seen such a rude and dismissive response from a restaurant who have - quite literally - poisoned their guests. I am writing this review to warn others of The Townhouse's attitude and approach to allergens, in the hope that it will prevent others from suffering a similar experience.

site_logo

Catherine Garry . 2024-04-02

MORE AT Google

Sadly I cannot recommend The Townhouse for guests with dietary requirements. I have coeliac disease and was made very ill by a meal at The Townhouse. This was despite submitting a pre-order and being assured that they could cater for my requirement (gluten free) - they even offered to make me an off-menu dish to cater for me. Despite this, there were some red flags once at the restaurant including being told of the dessert marked as gluten free on the menu “the chef made it with regular flour today”. This in itself is a quite frankly dangerous approach to handling allergies. I was served a dessert described as an “entirely gluten free brownie” (although not marked as gluten free on the menu), however I am confident from my reaction that this is what made me sick (due to the timing and severity of my reaction - having had this condition diagnosed for 10 years I know my reaction well). Upon letting the restaurant know, so that they could look into and improve allergen handling and procedures, the response from the ‘owner and creative director’ was incredibly rude and dismissive - stating that they can’t have possibly made me sick (despite this being the only place that had fed me!) and offering no apology. Since then, they have not replied to mine or a friend’s emails. Sadly this response leaves me feeling that there is a serious lack of respect for dietary requirements and the serious impacts that mishandling these has on people. I am writing this review to warn other people with dietary requirements. I personally would not feel confident eating here again unless I can be shown that appropriate measures have been put in place. Further, the customer service in general that I received was shockingly bad and unlike anything I have experienced before.

I triedd to email these guys before I took to writing a review online as although we didn’t feel it appropriate to comment at the time (partly as we weren’t quite sure who was in charge and we didn’t want to create a fuss in front of my Grandmother who isn’t always sure what’s going on) I feel, as a fellow hospitality manager, it would only be fair to write directly beforehand. I have seen no reply to this email and therefore don’t feel I owe any loyalties. After a lovely recent visit to their sister venue, the Three Horseshoes, we had high hopes. I booked and provided details of the party, making note that there was an elderly member of the party and that a ‘comfortable and quieter corner would be fantastic’. I can only assume that this request was not noted as we were sat in the main area of the restaurant, between the bar and the pass. I appreciate that table request can sometimes be awkward within a busy restaurant, however this didn’t seem to be the case this lunchtime, with tables available out of the way/by windows ect. The elderly member in question has mobility issues and therefore we didn’t feel appropriate to make comment and be required to move her again. Our praises do, however, go to the food, which was was tasty and well enjoyed (albeit expensive) although the request to the female waiter for a small roast pork for my Grandmother (she tends to get overwhelmed with a full plate and doesn’t enjoy eating it) seemed a little awkward due to pre-prepared pork loin, understandably not her fault but a little weird in not being possible when catering for elderly and children. We requested fewer potatoes and veg, which was provided for, but still charged at full price. This could have been looked over, however, on delivery of the food, there was no offer of apple sauce, any extra drinks etc, both of which we would of had but the energy we were served with, left us feeling that it would have been more of a chore for the male waiter than anything else. We ate, without anyone coming over to ask if everything was okay (we were hoping we could have tried to order another drink again here, but alas, no). I can understand if things like this are forgotten about during a busy service, but as proved by the female waiter, who was sat upon the bar changing the light bulbs of lamps as we walked past leaving, I didn’t get the gist they were rushed off their feet. We finished up, politely returning the dessert menus that I feel were forced in front of our faces a little (we would have said no had we’d been asked if we wanted them) and paid, with the bills having a confusing note that read ‘12.5% service charge for parties of 1 or more’ - I can only assume this meant all parties? Throughout the whole time there, service felt cold and performed to the basic satisfactory level of delivering our plates and taking them away again, and not at the level you’d expect for a fairly high end place, with matched prices. The uniforms of the staff were confusing - the male waiter was wearing a green bodywarmer, and the chef (visible through the open pass we were sat by) was wearing a white underarmour gym top rather than chef whites or even a plain top. We felt this visit fell below standard of what we have previously seen from staff at The Three Horseshouse and hopefully this will provide opportunity for improvement at your newer venue.

Disappointed they were out of foccaccio already, and though the olives etc arrived without too long a wait, it was 2.30 before our main courses arrived. First visit and very underwhelmed. No signage in reception to tell you where to go when you first arrive. We visited on a Friday night and there was only one other occupied table for our entire meal. Completely lacked atmosphere. Friends ordered cocktails and I ordered a G&T, sadly this was served in a small glass, same as were being used for serving water on the table. The biggest issue of the evening was the restaurant area was freezing. We asked waiter if he could turn some heat on and he advised there was a heater we could switch on under the table. This didn’t touch the sides. Sitting eating with your coat on is just not enjoyable and not what I expected. We asked multiple times if the bar area was available for us to move but after finishing food we rescheduled our taxi home and left. Waiter was unable to describe cocktails, didn’t refresh water and was only interested in getting order through. Disappointing experience.

If you want to choke whilst eating breakfast/brunch this is the place to go! Several things were wrong with this place. Firstly one of us ordered a bacon sandwich, one of the owners specifically asked if we wanted egg and we said no, they still bought it with the egg, heaven forbid we were allergic to it. No acknowledgement. No apology. Secondly two of us found hairs in our breakfast, and I advised the server of this when he collected our plates off the table. We couldn’t do this during the meal as they did not care to ask us how everything was. We even showed the survey the hairs and where they were. Again no acknowledgement, no apology. Thirdly the owners have a dog that is allowed to roam free throughout the place. I very much am an animal person but when you are trying to eat breakfast and the dog is under the table resting its head on your knees begging this is not acceptable. Again no acknowledgment and no apology. All of the above I expressed to the server and again no apology just the plates taken away. We where then not even asked if there was anything else we wanted needed or the bill was not bought to us. One of us went to the toilet and asked for the bill on the way through, when asking for the bill the women huffed and reluctantly said yes, when she bought the bill over there was no conversation, she just slammed it on the table. After waiting an extremely long time we decided to go up to the bar and pay, at which point I asked the severer how to make a complaint and he just said I will go and get the manager. When the manager arrived who was the same person who originally served us, he was unapologetically angry and made me out to be a liar. When I mentioned about the lady he just said right, when I mentioned about the hair he advised that they are a bit miffed about it because both their chefs are ‘bald’ when I explained I showed the waiter and you can clearly see that they are pet hairs, and that they have a dog roaming around the restaurant freely, he said nothing and just expected me to pay the bill which was extortionate considering the issues we had and the fact that only 1 of us ate our meal. There was no acknowledgement or apology throughout the whole of this process which just goes to show the kind of people they are.

I genuinely can’t remember the last time that a restaurant I’ve visited has had such a policy apply during lunch service. It’s a shame. This a beautiful pub in a very picturesque town. We heard great reviews from the locals and were very excited to have dinner there on a Saturday night. However we had a very disappointing experience. There was one table of three apart from my partner and I and no one else came in all evening. Food was bland. Butternut squash Dahl was comically bad. Mash potatoes consistency and zero flavor. Fish on the fish and chips was huge but tasted so blad. Chips portion was average for 20 pound main course and only just cooked through due to their "chunkiness". Floor is the toilet floor were soaking wet and frankly a slip hazard. Staff were pleasant and the venue is beautiful. I like to think we caught them on a bad night but we won't be back to test that theory.

Got to be one of the worst Indian meals in a long time, half tandoori chicken was so dry and aged looking. People were nice enough, I didn’t complain as don’t want to get into it, I was only visiting the area but definitely won’t be going back. Shane as nice little square…
